Charles Richard Kappel, 73
SEAFORD - Charles Richard Kappel, of Seaford, died of heart failure Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 73.
Mr. Kappel was born in Gloucester, Mass., the son of Charles and Julia Bray Kappel.
He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Kappel worked in the sales department for Contenental Can in Baltimore, retiring in 1984 after 33 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Knuutila Kappel; a son, Steven Kappel, of Minneapolis; a grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be private.

George L. Klingman, 81
MILLINGTON, Md. - George L. Klingman, of Millington, died of heart failure Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, in the Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville. He was 81.
Mr. Klingman was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Cleveland, the son of the late Louis and Mamie Brown Klingman.
He worked for the Chrysler Corp. in Newark on the production line, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Klingman was a World War II veteran.
In his spare time and retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and could be found throughout upper Kent and Queen Anne's counties collecting aluminum cans from neighbors and friends.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Hinckley, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret E. Klingman; a daughter, Lanora J. Wilhelm, of Westminster; a son and daughter-in-law, Elliot L. and Barbara Klingman, of Chester; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville.

Robert Beachem Lange, 73
MIDDLETOWN - Robert Beachem Lange, of Middletown, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Newark Manor Nursing Home after a long illness. He was 73.
Mr. Lange was born in Evanston, Ill., and raised in Delaware, the son of the late Edward and Florence Beachem Lange.
Mr. Lange was a World War II veteran, serving in Germany.
He was a master machinist with DuPont Co. for 40 years. He retired in 1985 and moved from his home in Elkton, Md., to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Due to illness, he moved to Middletown in 1997 to be closer to family.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Virginia Johnson Lange; a stepson, Thomas O. Johnson and his wife, Lynn, of Ruffin, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Betty J. Shallcross and her husband, Thomas, of Middletown; a brother, Thomas Lange, of Wilmington, and two step-grandsons, Christopher N. Shallcross, of Wilmington, and Michael J. Shallcross, of Middletown.
The family will receive visitors from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at his late residence, 107 East Park Place, Middletown.
Service and burial will be private.

Helen Faye Lewicki, 62
GEORGETOWN - Helen Faye Lewicki, of Georgetown, died Tuesday Jan. 16, 2001, in her home. She was 62.
Mrs. Lewicki was born in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of the late Clarence and Eunice Gribbs Foster.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lewicki enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by a husband of 34 years, Robert S. Lewicki; a daughter, Debra J. Puckett, of Georgetown; a stepdaughter, Teri Rains, of Felton; two stepsons, Michael Lewicki, of Pittsburgh, and Robert Lewicki, of Cleveland; and 10 grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Shorts Funeral Home, 609 E. Market St., Milton, where friends may call two hours prior to service.
Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.

Martin E. 'Eddie' Newsome, 79
CENTREVILLE, Md. - Martin E. "Eddie" Newsome, of Centreville, died of cancer Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Newsome was born Dec. 3, 1921, near Chestertown, the son of the late Lewis and Margaret Walker Newsome.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
Mr. Newsome was a PBX Installer and repairman for the C&P Telephone Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1983.
He loved to shoot pool. He was an avid bowler with the phone company and an avid NASCAR fan and loved to see Jeff Gordon drive. He also enjoyed hunting and playing ball in his younger years.
Mr. Newsome was a member of Jeff Davis American Legion Post 18, Centreville, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Doris Elizabeth Thompson Newsome; a son, William Edward "Eddie"' Newsome, of Crumpton; two brothers, Earl Newsome, of Chestertown, and Frank S. Newsome Sr. of Worton; a sister, Marian E. "Sis" Nicholson, of Chestertown; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Jewell Newsome, of Crumpton.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.

Genevieve Rugh Palmer, 81
DENTON, Md. - Genevieve Rugh Palmer, of Denton, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, in Easton. She was 81.
Mrs. Palmer was born March 30, 1919, in Greensburg, Pa., the daughter of the late Harry Rugh and Agnes Paul Rugh.
She attended school in Hempfield Township, Pa., and graduated from Greensburg-Salem High School in 1937. She received a bachelor's degree from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania) in 1941, and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1949.
Mrs. Palmer taught chorus and general music in the public schools in the Greensburg area until 1947, when she moved to Denton to teach chorus, general music and English in the Caroline County school system. She taught full-time in that system until 1953, and served as a substitute teacher until 1966.
On July 15, 1950, she married Walter B. Palmer Jr., who died March 22, 1983. They had two sons, both of whom survive her: Paul E. Palmer, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Walter B. Palmer III of Denton.
In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Palmer served as accompanist for the Caroline Choral Society. She sang in the adult choir at First Methodist Church in Denton (now part of St. Luke's United Methodist Church) and later was the organist and adult choir director at St. Luke's from the early 1960s until 1976. She continued to serve as a substitute organist there until 1999.
Her other activities included membership on the Peninsula Conference Music Committee and memberships in the Denton Women's Club and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 62, and membership in the Caroline County American Association of Retired Persons Chapter 915 in Denton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Paul Rugh, in 1955.
In addition to her sons, she is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Connie Rugh, of Greensburg; a sister-in-law (Samuel Paul Rugh's widow), Hazel Rugh, of Mount Pleasant, Pa.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, John C. Palmer and Margaret Palmer and R. Dale Palmer Sr. and Ruth Palmer, all of Denton; and 10 nieces and nephews and their families.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Fifth and Franklin streets, Denton.
Order of the Eastern Star service will be 8 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Elizabeth Madelene Pond, 79b
GEORGETOWN - Elizabeth Madelene Pond, of Georgetown, formerly of Lewes, died of heart failure Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 79.
Mrs. Pond was born May 13, 1921, in West Virginia.
She was a retired nurse's aide and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Edward Lowe; a daughter, Frances Marie Ritter; and a stepson, Richard Pond.
She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Pond Jr.; a son, Donald Eugene Vaughn; a daughter, Roberta Faith Lituski; two stepsons, Jerry Pond and Ralph Pond; two stepdaughters, Linda Thurman and Jeanette Newcomb; four brothers, Beryl, Clyde, Robert and Cecil; five sisters, Mildred Skelton, Eva Thompson, Frances Brewer, Ruth Steele, and Clara Hadox; 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Del. 24 and Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in the Whites Chapel Cemetery, Milton.

Gertrude Baker O'Day, 84
SEAFORD - Gertrude Baker O'Day of Seaford died of congestive heart failure, Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 84.
Mrs. O'Day was born in Concord, daughter of the late Charlie Thomas and Grace Lavena Ellingsworth Baker.
She worked as a packer at the DuPont Co., Seaford, retiring in 1977 after 34 years of service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor O'Day in 1960.
She is survived by two sisters, Charlotte McCutchen and Barbara E. Boyce, both of Laurel.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Romie H. Payne will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

Richard G. Tiedgen, 62
HARRINGTON - Richard G. Tiedgen of Harrington died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Delaware Veterans Hospital, Elsmere. He was 62.
Mr. Tiedgen served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
His love of cooking was noticeable as he worked as a restaurant manager.
He was very proficient on computers and he loved to research different things. He will be remembered as someone who loved his family and grandchildren very deeply.
Mr. Tiedgen attended the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Camden, which he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Howard and Mary Etta Tiedgen
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Myrna Tiedgen of Harrington; four sons, Chris Mertz of Raleigh, N.C., Ricky Mertz of Rolind, N.C., Mike Tiedgen of Dover and Donald Tiedgen; five daughters, Roxann Parker of Dover, Selena Fry and Starla Plummer, both of Milford, Cindy Tiedgen of Greenwood, and Brittany Tiedgen; and 12 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Georgetown. The Rev. Roland Coon of the Calvary Assembly of God, Camden, will officiate.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Georgetown.

Capt. Charles W. Schertle
MILLSBORO - Capt. Charles W. Schertle of the U.S. Maritime Service died Friday, March 30, 2001, in his home.
Capt. Schertle was born in Baltimore.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Vera E. Shifler Schertle; a son, Charles W. Schertle Jr.; a daughter, Diana K. Schertle; a brother, Joseph H. Schertle of Newport News, Va.; and a sister, Marie Kelly of Newport News.
Service will be private.

Blanca I. Caban, 45
DOVER - Blanca I. Caban, of Dover, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 45.
Mrs. Caban was barn Oct. 1, 1937, in Puerto Rico.
She owned and operated LaFamilia Pizza in Dover until her disability in 2001, when she sold her business.
Mrs. Caban was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Milagros Maria Antongiorgi in 1996.
She is survived by her mother, Josephine Roman, and her stepfather, Ismael Roman, both of Orlando, Fla.; her father, Felix Betancourt of Puerto Rico; a son, Ismael M. Caban of Dover; two daughters, Josephine Ann Caban and Margarita Valle, both of Dover; a brother, Juan Betancourt of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Staats of Dover; grandchildren Mallarie Klooster of Dover and Kevon (Chiripa) Hayslett; a godson, Christian Martinez, of Dover; a niece, Erica Betancourt, and a nephew, Matthew Rios, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Charles Southwick Davidson, 92
SEAFORD - Charles Southwick Davidson, of Seaford, died of heart failure Monday, March 31, 2003, in Green Valley Terrace Nursing Home, Millsboro. He was 92.
Mr. Davidson was born in New Castle, son of the late Howard and Sarah Craig Davidson.
He was a state agent for the Home Fire and Casualty Insurance Co. for 39 years, working in Delaware, Georgia and Virginia.
He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1933, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Mr. Davidson was also an avid gardener and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Venable Davidson; a daughter and son-in-law, Noel D. and Steve Boraski, of Richmond, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, C. Bruce and Mary Jane Davidson, of Roanoke, Va.; and two grandsons, Derek D. Klock and Michael S. Boraski.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Front Street, Seaford. The Rev. Jeanne W. Kirby will officiate.

Richard H. Dickerson, 73
MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. - Richard H. Dickerson of Mardela Springs died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a three year-battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. He was 73.
Mr. Dickerson was born in Sharptown, son of the late Minus Henry and Carrie Hastings Dickerson.
He was a graduate of Mardela High School in 1947.
Mr. Dickerson served in the U.S Army, serving some time in Germany.
He joined E.I. DuPont Co. in Seaford, Del., in 1948, retiring in April of 1985.
Mr. Dickerson enjoyed playing softball in the DuPont League in Seaford and the Wicomico County Men's League and coached a Sharptown team for a couple of years. He also enjoyed gardening and life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Milton Dickerson; and three sisters, Myrtle Solloway, Mary Hitchens and Katherine Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Ellen Dickerson, of Delmar; two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia and James Lee Goslee, of Sharptown, and Teresa Dickerson, of Mardela Springs; five grandchildren, Julie and Steven Dickerson, of Delmar, and Travis, Vince and Amanda Goslee of Sharptown; a godson, David M. Adkins, of Sharptown; three sisters, Martha Bryan, Grace Beiley and Ruth Murray; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Short Funeral Home, 13 East Grove St., Delmar, Del., where friends may call two hours earlier. Pastor Steve Willing will officiate.
Burial will be in Fireman's Cemetery, Sharptown.

Bertha V. Gears, 82
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Bertha V. Gears, of Chestertown, died April 1, 2003, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. She was 82.
Mrs. Gears was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Rock Hall, daughter of the late Harry and Annie (nee Gadd) Carter.
After her marriage in 1945 she moved to Chestertown, working for the Defense Plant and Vita Foods.
Her greatest enjoyment came from baby-sitting children for the past 40 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Franklin, Harry and Ervin Carter; and two sisters, Leona Bennett and Thelma Taylor.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Perry Gears; devoted friends Dorene Larrimore and Mary Ellen Unruh and their families, all of Chestertown; a niece, Betty Lou Taylor; and four godchildren, Bill Sutton, Faron Taylor, Gail Brannock and Laura Reardon.
Services will be private in Chester Cemetery.

Dorothy M. Lyle, 91
DENTON, Md. - Dorothy M. Lyle, of Denton, formerly of Silver Spring and Annapolis, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. She was 91.
Mrs. Lyle was born in Golconda, Nev., daughter of the late Stewart Gustav Mollin and Hazel Stillman Mollin.
She had lived in Denton since 1998, coming from Silver Spring. For many years, she lived in the Annapolis area, where she served as hostess at the Naval Academy Alumni House.
Mrs. Lyle was an accomplished artist and a member of the Maryland Federation of Art.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, U.S. Navy Capt. William W. Brown, who died in Annapolis in 1957 while commanding the U.S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station; her second husband, George A. Lyle, who had been a mathematics professor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, in 1989; and a sister, Elizabeth Collins.
She is survived by two sons, William W. Brown Jr. of Lewes, Del., and Michael G. Brown, of Cambridge; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.

Herman O. McGinnis, 93
WYOMING - Herman O. McGinnis, of Wyoming, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, in Silver Lake Center, Dover. He was 93.
Mr. McGinnis was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Wyoming, son of the late Harry and Hilda (Zuelke) McGinnis.
He was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School.
Mr. McGinnis worked at Playtex Corp., for the Ironworkers Union Local 451, at Carl King Inc. and at General Foods, Kraft Division.
His hobbies were traveling, camping and ceramics.
Mr. McGinnis was an original member since 1927 of Kent County 4-H Links Club, a member of Natural Campers and Hikers Association New Jersey Chapter, a member of Kentucky Colonels and a member of Woodside Diners Club. He was past president of CB Radio Club, a past member of the Camden-Wyoming Fire Co., and past president of Natural Campers and Hikers Association, Delaware Chapter (Bald Eagles).
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Sarah McGinnis, on March 15, 1988.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles H. and Ruth Anne McGinnis, of Felton; a sister, Mary Thomas, of Marydel; a granddaughter and her husband, Sandra E. and Ronald Remus, of Milford; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Joshua Remus; and a wonderful friend, Doris Blake.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, near Frederica.
