Jesse Singletary Sr., 79
HARRINGTON - Jesse Singletary Sr. of Harrington died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Singeltary was born in Kingstree, S.C., son of the late Janie Hynes.
He later moved to Delaware. He worked all his life until his illness.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Mae Riddick-Singletary; a daughter, Bernadine Singletary; and a brother, Junior Singletary.
He is survived by five sons and five daughters-in-law, Avery and Diane of Frederica, Jesse Jr. and Jeannette of Dover, Jerry and Vonda of Harrington, Joe and Patricia of Star Hill and Nelson and Santea of Greenwood; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Gloria Sease of Lakewood, N.J., Diane Singletary of Frederica, Twistann and Darnell Hollaman and Nelfine and Anthony Hodge, all of Dover, and Willieann and James Stanley and Jewelray and Dennis Pierce, all of Harrington; four sisters, Emma Singletary-Williams, Mae Singletary-Thomas, Dolly Singletary and Lyla Singletary, all of South Carolina; 47 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in First Love Church Inc., 181 Palmer Park, Star Hill, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Siloam AME Church Cemetery in Lincoln.

Patricia Ann Stevenson, 49
DOVER - Patricia Ann Stevenson of Dover died, after a lengthy illness, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in the Christiana Hospital, Christiana. She was 49.
Mrs. Stevenson was born March 9, 1953, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late George and Mary Ellen Monts.
Mrs. Stevenson worked at Kraft General Foods for 23 years prior to becoming ill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gregory L. Stevenson.
She is survived by her children, Anita P. Stevenson Walker and Melinda D. Stevenson, both of Dover; an adopted son, Terrence Reed of Dover; her grandchildren, Roger C. Doleman and Raheim R. Doleman, both of Dover; her siblings, Joyce Monts, Mary Monts, George Monts, Jr., Donald Monts, Sandra Monts, Darlene Monts, Jacquelyn Monts and Lisa Monts, all of Philadelphia; son-in-law, Tyrone R. Walker of Chester, Pa.; father-in-law, Clarence Stevenson of Dover; brothers-in-law, Robert, Joseph and Richard Stevenson, all of Dover; sister-in-law, Pearl Stevenson of Dover; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and several specials friends, Hannah Brown, Rebecca Norwood, Cynthia Stevens and Charles Banks.
Funeral services will be noon Saturday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Julian B. Woodall, 77
SMYRNA - Julian B. Woodall of Smyrna died Tuesday Oct. 22, 2002, in his home. He was 77.
Mr. Woodall was born in Crumpton, Md., son of the late George and Grace Biddle Woodall. He moved to Delaware as a child.
He was a 1942 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna.
Mr. Woodall was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific Theater on the USS Pondera as an Electrician's Mate 2nd Class.
He was self-employed as an electrician for many years, retiring several years ago.
He was a member of the VFW Post 8801, Clayton, and of the American Legion Post 14, Smyrna.
Mr. Woodall enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, and gardening.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Woodall and a brother, George Woodall, both in 1997.
He is survived by two sons, Julian G. Woodall and his wife, Gail of Camden and William F. Woodall of Frederica; a daughter, Patricia L. Mood of Smyrna; two brothers, Jesse Woodall of Farmington and Franklin Woodall of Rehoboth; a sister, Virginia Hebb of Baltimore; and eight grandchildren, Daniel, Alison, Mark, Jeremy, Jason, and Chris Woodall and Abbie and Christopher Mood.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Beatrice Deputy Wroten, 92
WILMINGTON - Beatrice Deputy Wroten of Wilmington, and formerly of Frederica, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in her home. She was 92.
Mrs. Wroten and her late husband, Jennings C. (J.C.) Wroten owned and operated Wroten's Hardware Store in Newport for 55 years before retiring in 1998. Previously, they owned and operated Wroten's Household Goods in Wilmington.
She enjoyed reading, and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. Mrs. Wroten loved animals, especially Boston Terriers.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Frier; her foster brother, William; and recently, by one of her best friends, Marie Grant.
She is survived by her cousins, Naomi Troutman of Florida and Harold Davis, of Milford; her adopted granddaughter and her husband, Nancy and Gino Rizzi; their children, David Merrill, his wife, Vanessa, and their daughter, Kaila, Deena Rizzi, William Merrill, and Paul Rizzi; her longtime friend and caregiver, Mary E. Merrill; and her Boston Terrier, Penny.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Nichols-Oilmore Funeral Home, 212 E, Justis St., Newport.
Services will be 11:45 a.m. Monday, in the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, North Dupont Highway, New Castle, where friends may call at 11 a.m.

DOVER - Bernice M. Berkovitz of Dover died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in her home.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dr. Roslyn Berkovitz of Buffalo, N.Y., and Helen Schlesinger and Dr. Stephen Schlesinger of Dover.

Sheryl Braxton, 39
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - Sheryl Braxton of College Park died of heart failure Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Northside Hospital, Atlanta. She was 39.
Mrs. Braxton was born Aug. 2, 1963, in Seaford, Del.
She was a day-care provider.
Mrs. Braxton was a member of the Word of Reconciliation Church in Riverdale, and the secretary of the church and a prayer intercessor.
She is survived by her husband, Victor Braxton of College Park; her mother, Marguerite White of Seaford; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Lowell and Tamu White of Jonesboro and Phillip and Monique Robinson of New York City; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Gwendolyn White of College Park, Carla and Terry Dupont of New Castle, Del., and Patricia White and Alzeda White, both of Seaford; four foster sisters; two foster brothers; nine uncles and four aunts by marriage, Bradford White, Henry Palmer and Calvin and Rachel Abbott, all of Seaford, Joe Palmer and Golden and Bishop Catherine Camper, all of Laurel, Del., Samuel Palmer of Salisbury, Md., Namon Palmer of Federalsburg, Md., George and Judy Mann of Middletown, Del., and Rodney and Betty Boyd of Cambridge, Mass.; five aunts and an uncle by marriage, Hattie West and Inez Palmer, both of Seaford, Marie Palmer and the Rev. Robert W. Cohee, 64
HOUSTON - Robert W. Cohee of Houston died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 64.
Mr. Cohee was born in Sandtown, son of the late Elijah and Pauline Dill Cohee.
He was a mechanic for J.Z. Exec. for 16 years, retiring in 1996.
Mr. Cohee loved playing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, drag racing at Delmar and hunting.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Cohee, Harold Cohee and James Cohee.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Kevin McBride of Dover; two brothers, Harlan Cohee of Houston and Charles Cohee of Felton; three sisters, Ruth Ann Rutledge of Harrington, Louise Messick of Houston and Joyce Guessfierd of Felton; and two grandchildren, James McBride and Shannon McBride.

Elizabeth E. Collins, 95
REHOBOTH BEACH - Elizabeth E. Collins of Rehoboth Beach died of heart failure Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Genesis ElderCare in Seaford. She was 95.
Mrs. Collins was born near Rehoboth Beach, daughter of the late Harry Baynum and Virgie Palmer Baynum, who lived in Lewes.
She was a homemaker and, with her husband, operated the Collins Service Station and Grocery at Midway for 40 years.
Mrs. Collins enjoyed gardening, word puzzles, cooking and crocheting. She always tried to respond to her family's needs with help, love and concern.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, George Washington Hill in 1929 and Alfred Collins in 1976; a brother, Harry "Pete" Baynum in 1986; and a sister, Alice Steele, in 2000.
She is survived by two sons, Fred C. Hill of Selbyville and Alfred L. Collins of Georgetown; two daughters, Elsie M. Kenton of Seaford and Mary E. Holloway of Nanticoke, Md.; two sisters, Clara Fox of Georgetown and Gertrude Smith of Greenwood; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road and Del. 24, Long Neck, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Gary Ross will officiate.
Burial will be in the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Midway.

Ruth Ellen Oeckel, 93
YORK COUNTY, Va. - Ruth Ellen Oeckel of York County died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Regency Healthcare Center in Yorktown. She was 93.
Mrs. Oeckel was a native of Lewes, Del., and had been a resident of the Virginia Peninsula for six years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick William Oeckel.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William A. and Helen Carpenter of Williamsburg; two grandchildren, Ginger Louke of Williamsburg and Ann Summerford of Newport News; three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Louke, Christina Abbott and Scott Summerford; two nephews, John Murray of New Jersey and Robert Murray of Pennsylvania; and a great-great-grandson, Wyatt Louke.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewes.

Dorothy Mae Purdy, 91
LEWES - Dorothy Mae Purdy of Lewes, and formerly of Rehoboth Beach, died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Lewes Convalescent Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Purdy was born in Rehoboth Beach, daughter of the late Harvey and Hettie Murray Greene.
She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Rehoboth Beach.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest E. Purdy, in 1981.
She is survived by a son, Forrest H. Purdy of Rehoboth Beach; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1999 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Paul E. Zartman, 95
DOVER - Paul E. Zartman of Dover died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 95.
Mr. Zartman was born in 1905 in Dornsife, Pa., son of the late Charles F. and Martha T. (Lenker) Zartman.
Mr. Zartman started working for the F.W. Woolworth Co. in 1930. In 1936, he moved to Dover as manager of the Woolworth store formerly located on Loockerman Street. He worked there until 1953, when he went into the real-estate business. He later started the Paul E. Zartman Real Estate Co., which he ran until his retirement in 1984.
He served the Dover community as a Dover city councilman from 1954 to 1962, and was instrumental in securing a new electric power plant for Dover.
Mr. Zartman was a member of the People's United Church of Christ of Dover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie V. Zartman, in 1984.
He is survived by his second wife, Sara Hammond Zartman of Dover; a son, Eugene R. Zartman of Bethesda, Md.; and two grandsons, Charles E. Zartman of Durham, N. C., and Matthew L. Zartman of San Francisco.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the People's United Church of Christ, South Bradford and Reed streets, Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Ralph Eugene Biddle, 48
GLEN FALLS, N.Y. - Ralph Eugene Biddle of Glen Falls, formerly of Marydel, Md., died, after a long ill-ness, Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Glen Falls Hospital, Glen Falls. He was 48.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Evelyn Biddle.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Cahall) Biddle; their four children, Kathy Biddle, Theresa Biddle, Dawn Biddle and Holly Biddle; two other children, Brian Biddle and Samantha Biddle, both of Glen Falls; his longtime companion, Kathy Sims of Glen Falls; two brothers, John Biddle of Delaware and Mike Biddle of Henderson, Md.; and two sisters, Susan Melvin of Felton, Del., and Ruthi Marlow of Magnolia, Del.
Services and burial were private.

Harry L. Carino Jr., 61
DOVER - Harry L. Carino Jr. of Dover died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospi-tal, Dover. He was 61.
Mr. Carino was born Jan. 21, 1942, in Bronx, N.Y., son of Marian Carino and Harry L. Carino Sr. of Bay Shore, Long Island, N.Y.
He was an electrician for the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1980, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam.
After retiring from the service, Mr. Carino worked as an electrical planner in the civil-engineering squad-ron at Dover Air Force Base.
He was a NASCAR fan, especially of Car No. 43.
Mr. Carino was an avid bowler and belonged to the Tuesday Night Men's League at Brunswick Doverama, Rodney Village, for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Elaine Carino Nov. 24, 1998.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancée, Betty Barbara Truitt of Dover; a son, Harry L. Carino III and Harry III's fiancée, Donna Williams, both of Magnolia; two brothers, John Carino of Greensboro, N.C., and Charles Carino of Brentwood, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Shannon Heffelmire and Amber Carino, both of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be noon Saturday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Theodore 'Ted' Doblitz, 77
MARYDEL - Theodore "Ted" Doblitz of Marydel died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, in his home. He was 77.
Mr. Doblitz joined his extended foster family in 1996. While residing with the Powells, he talked of vari-ous different types of jobs he had performed over the years. His favorite was farming and gardening.
He was an avid painter, winning several ribbons and awards at the Delaware State Fair. He attended the Modern Maturity Day Care, where he had a lot of friends and enjoyed playing pool and doing arts and crafts. One of his pleasures was feeding and caring for his yellow Labrador Retriever, Max, who was there waiting for him upon his arrival in heaven.
He is survived by his foster parents, Sam and Sylvia Powell; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Buffy and Denise Madden, Sam Powell, Larry Quinn and Richard Sutherland, all of Marydel; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Francie and Ken Powell of North Port, Fla., Sue Ellen Powell and Mary Nechay, both of Marydel, and Christine Cumens of Wyoming; two special friends, his foster niece and nephew, Justin Madden and Casey Madden, both of Marydel; two wonderful aunts, Emilie Olechny of Marydel and Helen Dagg of Hartly; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.
Burial will be private.

Philip J. Downey Sr., 85
WILMINGTON - Philip J. Downey Sr. of Wilmington, formerly of Bethel Township, Pa., died of natural casues Wednesday, May 7, 2003, in the Masonic Home of Delaware, Wilmington. He was 85.
Mr. Downey retired from the Sun Oil Co. in 1973 after 38 years of service.
He and his wife, Anna Downey, who preceded him in death in 1994, resided in Fenwick Island and Sun City, Fla., after retirement.
Mr. Downey was a 50-year member of the Penn Lodge 709, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in Ches-ter, Pa.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Philip J. Downey Jr. and Maryjane Downey of Do-ver and Francis R. and Nancy Downey of Middletown; a sister, Virginia Roth of Boothwyn, Pa.; five grand-children; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Ridge Road, Linwood, Pa.

Ernest N. 'Buddy' Fletcher, 76
FELTON - Ernest N. "Buddy" Fletcher of Felton died Monday, May 26, 2003, in Silver Lake Center, Do-ver. He was 76.
Mr. Fletcher was born in Harrington, son of the late Wilford Fletcher and Eva Mae Fletcher.
He spent nearly all his life as a resident of Kent County.
Mr. Fletcher served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1944, he married Olive Sherwood.
He worked with ILC of Dover for 16 years, during which time he worked directly with Alan Shepard, fit-ting Cmdr. Shepard with the suit that he eventually wore into space. He and his wife started the Fletcher's Nursing Home in Felton in 1954, eventually selling the business in 1979. They also owned and operated Fletcher's Package Store on U.S. 13 in Dover for nearly 25 years during the 1960s through the 1980s. In 1978, he went to work for People's Life Insurance Co. with his son, Rodney, and eventually ended his 15-year career in the insurance business with Monumental Life Insurance Co.
His only ambition in his retirement was to be a happy old man. He spent his time interacting with his buddies, and reading, primarily non-fiction. He was a sports enthusiast and would talk one's ear off about politics and politicians. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. To all who knew him well, he will be sorely missed.
Mr. Fletcher had played numerous years with the Felton Fire Co.'s fast-pitch softball team in the Moose League of Harrington. He also was an avid bowler in the HMF League at Milford Lanes, where he bowled with his father, who preceded him in death in 1962.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his mother in 1986; and his only brother, Francis Fletcher, in 1993.
In addition to his former wife, now Olive James of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and his son, of Smyrna, he is sur-vived by another son, Kevin Fletcher of Felton; and five grandchildren, Chris Fletcher, Amy Denham and Jason Fletcher, all of Felton, Nicole Dixon of Kenton and Hayley Fletcher of Smyrna.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. Du Pont Highway, Harrington.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
