Lydia Elizabeth Harman, 81
MILLVILLE - Lydia Elizabeth Harman of Millville, formerly of Linthicum, Md., died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro. She was 81.
Mrs. Harman was born Jan. 16, 1921, in Baltimore.
Mrs. Harman was employed by the Rogers Printing and Cartoon Co. in Baltimore, retiring in 1986.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy L. Harman Sr.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda D. and Bob Harman of Millsboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Leroy L. Harman Jr. and Sharon Harmon of Peoria, Ariz.; and two grandsons, Mark Harman and Michael Harman.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro.
Graveside services will be noon Thursday in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Gov. Ritchie Highway, Baltimore, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Dr. James Van Der Wall will officiate.
Vernon R. Jones, 89
CRUMPTON, Md. - Vernon R. Jones of Crumpton died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 89.
Mr. Jones was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Baltimore, son of the late Martha Ann and Charles Jones.
He had been a resident of Crumpton for 10 years.
He enjoyed spending time, and was active, in his local church.
Mr. Jones loved to travel. In his travels he lived in Arizona and California. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, and he loved grapes and fruit trees.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine E. Jones; and a son, Peter S. Jones.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Denner of Chestertown; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchlldren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Zion Cemetery, Freeland.

Rebekah (Stokes) Lamb, 78
REHOBOTH BEACH - Rebekah (Stokes) Lamb of Rehoboth Beach died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in her home. She was 78.
Mrs. Lamb was born in Salisbury, N.C., daughter of the late Dr. James Ernest and Rebekah Marsh Stokes.
She lived in Baltimore for many years and moved to the Rehoboth Beach area about five years ago.
She enjoyed gardening, politics and playing bridge, and she loved reading and telling stories.
Mrs. Lamb was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church, Rehoboth Beach, and served as a volunteer at the All Saints' Thrift Shop.
She is survived by her husband, Christopher Lamb of Rehoboth Beach; a daughter and son-in-law, Caroline MacRae Lamb and Richard S. Becker of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher Lamb Jr. and Beth Ann Kremer Lamb, and James Cotten Lamb, all of Baltimore; and three grandchildren, Nicholas Marion Stokes Becker, Christopher Philip Lamb Becker and John Kremer Lamb.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the All Saints' Episcopal Church, 15 Olive Ave., Rehoboth Beach. The Rev. Max Wolf will officiate.

John A. Sebastian, 71
FRANKFORD - John A. Sebastian of Frankford died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in his home, after a long illness. He was 71.
Mr. Sebastian served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was retired from American Cyanamid (Lederle Laboratory), Pearl River, N.Y., and from positions as building inspector of the Village of Haverstraw, N.Y., and of Frankford.
Mr. Sebastian was an active member of Knights of Columbus of Haverstraw and the VFW Post 7234 of Millville. After relocating to Delaware, he was a parishioner of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Joseph Sebastian; three sisters, Irene Palestro, Mary Buongiavanni and Margaret Fiore; and various nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Audrey Sebastian; two daughters, Joan Connolly of Cornwall, N.Y., and Claire Gannon of Nicholasville, Ky.; a son, William Willett Sebastian of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, Vincent Sebastian of New City, N.Y., a sister, Ann Haller of Spring Valley, N.Y,; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 6 p.m. today in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, on West Avenue in Ocean View.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, near Millsboro.

Russell A. Walls, 46
BETTERTON - Russell A. Walls of Betterton, formerly of Marcus Hook, Pa., died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 46.
Mr. Walls was born April 26, 1956, in Chester, Pa., son of Robert Walls Sr. and Hazel Reubeck Walls of Marcus Hook. He moved to Betterton 13 years ago.
He was a machine operator for Metal Masters in Clayton, Del.
In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Ellen Groover Walls; a daughter, Theresa M. Walls, and a son, Russell J. Walls, both at home; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Robert Walls Jr. and Nancy Walls of Wilmington, Del., and Rick Walls of Marcus Hook; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Susan and Mike Sninchak of Linwood, Pa., Sandra Sninchak and her friend, Mike Smith, of Marcus Hook and Sherry and Ken Bennett of Linwood, Pa.
Service will be noon Friday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech in Galena, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be private.

Naomi Reese Myers Wheat, 100
WORTON, Md. - Naomi Reese Myers Wheat of Worton died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in the Schuyler House, Church Hill. She was 100.
Mrs. Wheat was born Aug. 27, 1902, in Hanesville, daughter of the late Margaret Younger and Carl P. Myers.
She was a graduate of Maryland State Normal School at Towson in 1921.
Mrs. Wheat had given her life as a teacher, a wife and a friend. She had been teaching elementary education for 40 years. She taught at Chesterville School from 1931-1937, the Worton School from 1928-1931, and the primary grades in Galena from 1937, retiring in 1965.
She enjoyed reading, word puzzles, flowers and trees.
Mrs. Wheat was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Kent County, and the Retired National Teachers Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Wheat, on Aug. 11, 1988; three sisters, Sarah Whittaker, Ruth Cullis and Anna Welch; four brothers, John C. Myers, Milton C. Myers, Chas Leonard Myers and Paul W. Myers; and a niece, Marian Loughry.
She is survived by her many nieces and nephews, Samuel Leon Cullis Sr., Thomas Carlton Cullis, Herbert Myers Cullis, Frances Ruth Cullis Pennell, John Henry Myers, Anne Myers Virdin, Barbara Pauline Myers, Milton Richard Myers, Elizabeth Myers Usilton, Yvonne Whittaker Arrowood, William Leonard Myers, Kenneth Albert Myers Sr., Beverly Jane Myers Foreman, Brenda Jean Myers, Paula Christine Myers, Carroll Woodrow Myers, Thomas Reece Myers, Philip Wilson Myers, Carl Dale McMullen and Weldon Myers Welch.

Mary E. Chippie, 82
DOVER - Mary E. Chippie of Dover died of natural causes Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 82.
Mrs. Chippie was the daughter of the late William and Dora Edwards, who had lived in Simpson, Pa.
In high school, she was known as "Little Mary," an outstanding student, winning various awards, among them an award from the Palmer Method of Handwriting.
After high school, she began working for Western Union in New Jersey, where she met her future husband, who was also a manager of an office nearby. She married John G. Chippie, and the union produced five children. The family moved to Cheswold.
Mrs. Chippie often helped in the classrooms of her children and helped out with church suppers. Her creative side won her an award from the Del-Mar-Va Chicken Festival for her barbecued chicken. She found her pleasure in the natural beauty of the world as evidenced by the large and beautiful gardens she and her husband planted every year.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1989.
She is survived by a daughter, Doris A. Isele of Novi, Mich.; four sons, John D. Chippie, Joseph E. Chippie and Thomas W. Chippie, all of Dover, and Michael L. Chippie of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Deacon Hilton Baines, 91
LITTLE CREEK - Deacon Hilton Baines of Little Creek died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Va. He was 91.
Deacon Baines was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Painter, Va., one of 12 children of the late Robert and Olivia Harmon Baines.
He attended public school in Northampton County, Va. While he did not further his education, he en-sured that his children understood the value of an education.
As a young man, Deacon Baines was united in holy matrimony to the late Clarease Dillard, and from this union, five sons were born, two of whom preceded him in death, Hilton G.R. and Lowell V. In search of a better life for his family, he left Virginia and moved to Delaware, where he found employment during the winter months at Newcomb and Hands Oyster Co., Port Mahon, for more than 20 years. During the sum-mer months, he worked with John "Jack" Pleasanton as a crabber and deckhand for 15 years. The Inter-national Brotherhood of Teamsters employed Hilton for more than 25 years before his retirement. He also served as a foster parent for more than 40 years.
He also derived a great deal of pleasure from working in his garden, fishing and crabbing, and being "Mr. Fix-It" at home. He was an avid hunter, and was known far and wide for his outstanding rabbit dogs. His family and friends remember him as having a strong work ethic, as an advocate for education and for his altruism. He was devoted to the foster children that came into his home and developed a special bond with them. He was active and lucid to the very end of his life, and for this, his family and friends give all praise to God.
Deacon Baines became a Christian at an early age, was baptized and became a member of New Allen Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, Franktown, Va. When he moved his family to Delaware, he joined Union Baptist Church and remained there for many years before becoming a founding member of Second Baptist Church. He remained a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, always ready to serve, until his health began failing. His proudest moment was in 1996, when he was ordained a deacon. He en-joyed working around the church, helping with the many building projects. He could be often heard, around the church, humming one of the traditional spiritual songs he so loved.
He is survived by his wife, Leonia Francis Baines; three sons and three daughters-in law, Robert and Margaret Baines of Dover, Jaines and Eddie Baines of Chicago and Dr. Tyrone and Shereatha Baines of Durham, N.C.; two stepsons, Ross Wilson of New York City and Alonzo Collins of Las Vegas; two step-daughters and one stepson-in-law, Eleanor Wilson of New Providence, N.J., and Margaret Collins Leonard and Melton Leonard of Browns Mills, N.J.; an "adopted" daughter, Loretta Muntz of Dover; an "adopted" son, Deshon Blue of Cleveland; a sister, Leanna Ayers of Maryland; 24 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; a rich extended family including numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and foster chil-dren; and many friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Second Baptist Church, 407 W. Loockerman St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John E. Bagley Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be in Ebenezer AME Church Cemetery, Capeville, Va.

Alice M. Bruce, 69
MILLSBORO - Alice M. Bruce of Long Neck, near Millsboro, and formerly of Elmira, N.Y., died Friday, May 30, 2003, at the Lewes Convalescent Center. She was 69.
Mrs. Bruce was born in Elmira, daughter of the late Lloyd Hanmer and Harriet Denson Hanmer.
She was a dispatcher for the Sussex County Call Board.
Mrs. Bruce was a life member of and firefighter for the Indian River Volunteer Fire Co. and past secretary of the Delmarva Firemen's Association.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Harold M. Bruce; a son, Jeffery Bruce; and a sister, Eliza-beth "Betty" Messenger.
Memorial services will be at noon Wednesday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Long Neck.
Burial will be private.

Raymond W. 'Chic' Engram, 82
DOVER - Raymond W. "Chic" Engram of Dover died after a long illness, Friday May 30, 2003, at Bay-health-Kent General Hospital, Dover, surrounded by his family. He was 82.
Mr. Engram graduated from Greensboro (Md.) High School and entered the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1941.
He worked for Monumental Life from 1950 to 1956, Delaware Auto Sales from 1957 to 1967, the state of Delaware Auditor's Office from 1968 to 1971, the Division of Revenue in 1971 and the Office of the State Treasurer as chief of administration from July 1971 until retirement in June 1983.
He enjoyed horseshoes, nature, crabbing and family.
Mr. Engram was a member of American Legion Walter L. Fox Post 2, Dover; a lifetime member of the Be-nevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 1903, Dover; and a member of the Modern Maturity Cen-ter, Dover.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Renee Engram Currie, in December 2001.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Florence Engram of Dover; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Fred Knight of Camden; five grandchildren and the spouses of two, Matthew and Cary Knight and Jason Knight, all of Camden, Scott Currie and Jennifer Currie, both of Milford, and Kelly and Lance Chandler of Wyoming; and a great-grandson, Jake Chandler of Wyoming.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faries Funeral Home, 1250 S. Governors Ave., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
B. Hazel Gosch, 75
HARTLY - B. Hazel Gosch of Hartly died Thursday, May 29, 2003, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 75.
Mrs. Gosch was born Dec. 2, 1927, at home in the Templeville, Md., area, one of seven children of the late George Seward Sr. and Edna Hay Seward.
She worked for 37 years for Leeds Travelware, Clayton.
During World War II, she was involved in civil defense as an aircraft watcher.
Mrs. Gosch was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and a past member of the Hartly Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Louis J. Gosch Jr., in July 1999.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Susan Gosch of Hartly, a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda G. and Bryan Mills of Aiken, S.C.; a brother, Olin Seward of Hartly; a sister, Madeline Wooleyhan of Templeville; four grandchildren, Grant Gosch of Dover, Bradley Gosch and his wife, Tanya, of Hartly, Ryan Mills and Kylie Mills, both of Aiken; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Gosch and John Gosch, both of Hartly.

Anna Dorothy Inman, 76
HURLOCK, Md. - Anna Dorothy Inman of Hurlock died of natural causes Thursday, May 29, 2003, at The Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 76.
Mrs. Inman was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Boston, daughter of the late Lawrance and Elenor McCarthy Fargo.
She was employed by Citicorp as a secretary and moved to this area in 1990 from Baltimore.
Mrs. Inman was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Caroline County Memorial Post 7937, Greensboro, since 1990, and was past president, serving for five years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Inman, on June 22, 2002.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hall of Hurlock; a brother, Jack Fargo of Brockton, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Angela Inzodda, Donald Inzodda, Julie Inzodda and Christine Hall.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, near Hurlock.

George Kahne
LEWES - George Kahne of Lewes died after a long illness, Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Lewes.
Mr. Kahne attended George Washington University, majoring in journalism.
During World War II, he served in the U.S Navy aboard the USS Pasadena.
He retired from federal service with the Naval Service Weapons Center.
He had a passion for antiques and the restoration of them, having owned a shop for 20 years.
Mr. Kahne was involved in community theater, having authored scripts for numerous original musicals. He also was active in public affairs for Baystar Production.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Mikki Kahne; a sister, Mary Jane Petrie, and Ms. Petrie's family; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kathleen Kahne; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Robin and Calvin Martin, Kim and Rick Wimberly and Lisa and Kevin McTigue; nine grandchildren; and numer-ous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Second and Market streets, Lewes.
