James K. Dukes, 72
GEORGETOWN - James K. Dukes of Georgetown died, after an extended illness, Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, in Harrison House, Georgetown. He was 72.
Mr. Dukes was the son of the late Frances and James P. Dukes.
He was a native of Sussex County and attended Georgetown High School, where he was a member of the class of 1949.
After leaving Georgetown High School, Mr. Dukes served in the U.S. Air Force.
His father, and uncle David Dukes, were lifelong merchant seamen, and after leaving the Air Force, he followed in their footsteps, working for the Sun Oil Co. out of their Pennsylvania port facilities.
Long interested in Democratic politics and an active party worker, Mr. Dukes became interested in the U.S. Senate campaign during the 1972 race. He met the young attorney from Wilmington, Joe Biden, who was then serving on the New Castle County Council. He volunteered to work for Mr. Biden and became one of his principal supporters and campaign workers in Sussex County. Mr. Biden campaigned heavily in Sussex County and made the Dukes family home his headquarters and home away from home in Georgetown. After his successful election to the U.S. Senate, Sen. Biden rewarded Mr. Dukes with a position on his Washington, D.C., Senate staff, where he focused on constituent problems in Sussex County. He missed Sussex County and his family, and returned to Georgetown, where he continued to reside the rest of his life.
As a boy, he often showed his pony in local horse shows.
Mr. Dukes was a member of the Georgetown Return Day Committee, the Sussex County Democratic Club and the Sussex County Horse and Pony Club.
He is survived by a brother, Franklin, of Berlin, Md.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday in Short Funeral Services, Georgetown.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, near Millsboro.

Dr. Warren Hall, 99
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Dr. Warren Hall of Santa Clara died Oct. 6, 2002, in Santa Clara. He was 99.
Dr. Hall was born Dec. 23, 1902, in St. Davids, Pa., son of the late S. Warren Hall Jr. and Gertrude Scott Hall. He grew up in Dover, Del.
He attended Wesley Institute, now Wesley College, in Dover. After graduation from Swarthmore College in 1927, he earned a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and taught at Hollins and Earlham colleges.
In 1934, Dr. Hall married Natalye Colfelt, who preceded him in death in 1974.
As World War II approached, he went to Syracuse University Medical School and served as a U.S. Army doctor in the Philippines until the end of the war, and then, served in Japan's reconstruction government.
Dr. Hall then began a long medical career in several Western states until 1972.
After attending seminary, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1974, and volunteered his services at churches in the San Francisco Bay area for many years.
Dr. Hall was an avid hiker well into his 90s and a life member of the Sierra Club. In 1995, he became the first Delawarean to make a donation in perpetuity to the Delaware Agricultural Lands Preservation Foundation of the development rights on his farm near Frederica, Del., which has been in the family since the 1700s.
In 1976, he married Ruth Chaban, who died in 1986, survived by two daughters, Marlene Ross and Sherry Oppenheim, both of California and two granddaughters of California.
He is survived by a niece, Joan Wise of Chestertown, Md.; four nephews, Barry O'Brien of Deland, Fla., Douglas Hall of Nashville, Tenn., Gordon O'Brien of Chatham, N.J., and Thomas Hall of Victoria, B.C., Canada; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial services are to be held today in California.
Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, near Frederica.

James N. Harvey, 80
CECILTON, Md. - James N. Harvey of Cecilton died of heart failure Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in Union Hospital, Elkton. He was 80.
Mr. Harvey was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Virginia, son of the late Muster and Willa Boulder Harvey.
He had been a resident of Cecilton since 1951. He was employed through Laborers International Union Local 199 in Wilmington, Del., working for various companies in the Tri-State area, including DuPont and Getty Oil, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Harvey was a member of the Cecilton Gun & Rod Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Wright Harvey, in 2001; two sons, William Wright and Lawrence Wright; and a daughter, Eleanor Sewell.
He is survived by 11 children, Ruth Harvey and Margaret Hodges, both of Wilmington, Helen Green of Newark, Del., Carl Gail of Elkton, Pricilla McCall of Baltimore, Mary Thomas and Leonard Wright, both of Dover, Del., Orlando Wright of Camden, Del., Sylvania Gonzalas of Las Vegas, James Wright of San Antonio, Texas, and Alonzo Wright of Clayton, Del.; three sisters, Eleanor Johnson and Anna Watson, both of Newark, N.J., and Mary Walker of Virginia; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Tuesday in the Christ Unity Center, 1150 Singerly Road, Elkton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Bohemia Manor Cemetery in Chesapeake City.

Richard C. Hogan, 69
SMYRNA - Richard C. Hogan of Smyrna died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in his home. He was 69.
Mr. Hogan was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Chestertown, Md., son of the late Aubry and Evelyn Collier Hogan.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Hogan worked as a truck driver for Metal Masters Trucking in Smyrna for 12 years, retiring in 1994.
He was an avid fisherman.
Mr. Hogan was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Hogan.
He is survived by his wife, Page Bartlett Hogan; a stepson and his wife, Leslie R. and Shirley Bartlett of Clayton; a sister, Shirley Marshall of Chestertown; a stepbrother and his wife, Alvin and Pat Pardee of Lynch, Md.; three stepbrothers, Robert E. Pardee, David L. Pardee and James F. Pardee, all of Newark; a stepsister, Shirley Warrington of Newark; two granddaughters and their husbands, Crystal L. and Bruce Graham and Allison K. and Brian Timmons, all of Clayton; a grandson, Mark L. Bartlett of Clayton; and a great-grandson, Jacob A. Graham of Clayton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna.

Lamar James Malloy, infant
DOVER - Lamar James Malloy was born and died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was an infant.
He is survived by his parents, Shakeena Malloy and Lamar Scott of Dover; his brother, Olique Malloy of Dover; his grandfather, Joseph Malloy of Dover; his grandmother, Sylvia Baldwin of Dover; paternal grandmother, Diane Gregory; three aunts; two step-aunts; one uncle; two step-uncles; and a host of other relatives.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Jesus Love Temple, Milford.

Medford Palmer 'Uncle Med' 'Grapevine' Phillips, 77
WORTON, Md. - Medford Palmer "Uncle Med" "Grapevine" Phillips of Worton died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 77.
Mr. Phillips was born March 22, 1925, in Worton Point, son of the late Garrison and Pansy Phillips.
He received his education in the Worton Point School System.
Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army and received his honorable discharge in 1947.
He worked for Campbell's Soup Co. in Chestertown for many years; then, he was employed by Andelot Farm, Worton, from which he retired.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, mowing grass and talking. He had a huge heart and loved everyone, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would give his fish, wildlife and vegetables to everyone and anyone who wanted them. His favorite fishing and boating buddies were Garrison "Jabbo" Phillips, Arlington "Snooks" Phillips, James "Philbo" Phillips, Alton "Vest" Somerville, Bobby Goldsboro and "Little" Bobby Gears.
Mr. Phillips was a faithful member of St. George's United Methodist Church in Worton Point, where he served on the Trustee and Usher boards. He loved his church and his church family. He was a man of his word and he could be counted on to do whatever he said he would do. He worked diligently to the end. He was also proud to be a member of the Parker White Post 143 American Legion. His favorite hymns were "I Am So Grateful" and "The Battle Is Not Yours, It's the Lord's." His favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm, and his favorite saying was "God Bless the Child That's Got His Own."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude and Garrison Jr.; and two sisters, Lucy and Julia.
He is survived by a loving and devoted wife of 53 years, whom he married Sept. 5, 1949, Josephine Phillips; a son, Donald Phillips of Worton; five daughters, Cheryl Saunders of Big Woods, Phyllis Hynson and Darlene Fisher, both of Baltimore, Corlis Robinson of Georgetown and Diane Phillips of Worton; a goddaughter, Carol Phillips Thomas of Wilmington, Del.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 10 nephews; seven nieces; and a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, friends, church family, co-workers and associates.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in St. George United Methodist Church, Worton Point (St. James Newtown Road), Worton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Hattie Mae Townsend Schoolfield, 59
POCOMOKE CITY, Md. - Hattie Mae Townsend Schoolfield of Pocomoke City died, after a lengthy illness, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. She was 59.
Mrs. Schoolfield was born June 20, 1943, in Pocomoke City, daughter of the late John Townsend and Marie Lankford Townsend.
She received her early education in the public schools of Worcester County and attended the International Bible Institute and Seminary, receiving credentials as a home missionary. She also received various certificates from the Pocomoke Bible Institute on different books of the Bible.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Herbert Schoolfield in 1960. From this union, four children were born. She was a loving wife, mother and friend.
Mrs. Schoolfield accepted Christ at an early age, and later became a member of Miracle Deliverance Tabernacle, where she served as a faithful servant unto the Lord. She served as a member of the Helping Hands Outreach Missions and of the Adult Choir, a faithful prayer warrior and a devoted worker in many areas. After many years of service, she became the mother of the church, affectionately called "Mother."
She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Herbert Schoolfield; three sons, Kevin of Salisbury, Kenneth "Kenny" of Pocomoke City and Melvin of Philadelphia; a daughter, Joyce, of Pocomoke City; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Ronald Bryce of Philadelphia; two sisters-in-law, Marie Sturgis of Pocomoke City and Geneva Cave of Hastings, Fla.; three aunts, Virginia Cooper of Seaford, Del., Ethel Harmon of Millsboro, Del., and Celeste Hicks of Philadelphia; an uncle, William Lankford of Pocomoke City; four grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; and many other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Miracle Deliverance Tabernacle, Pocomoke City.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the tabernacle.

Milton H. Clendaniel, 81
POTTSTOWN, Pa. - Milton H. Clendaniel of Pottstown died Monday, May 10, 2004, in the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. He was 81.
Mr. Clendaniel was born in Dover, son of the late Harry and Blanche (Baker) Clendaniel. He was a longtime resident of Harrington, Del., before moving to Pottstown last year.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
During his lifetime, Mr. Clendaniel was employed by Bond Bread, Penn Supreme Ice Cream and the Lake Forest School District, from which he retired in 1986.
He enjoyed his family and working in his garden, raising strawberries and lima beans. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by his family.
Mr. Clendaniel attended the Independent Bible Fellowship Church in Harrington.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Benny Clendaniel; and a sister, Irene Leagar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia Clendaniel of Pottstown; a son and a daughter-in-law, Douglas and Susan Clendaniel of Englewood, Fla.; a daughter and a son-in-law, Debbie and Ed Montz of Pottstown; two granddaughters, whom he adored and spoiled, Heather Pearce of Pottstown and Taylor Clendaniel of Englewood; two sisters, Sarah Seward and Mildred Tribbitt, both of Dover; a brother, John Clendaniel of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. today in the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. Du Pont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Mark Clendaniel, Churches of Christ in Christian Union, Chillicothe, Ohio, assisted by the Rev. Guy Simpson, pastor of Independent Bible Fellowship Church in Harrington, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sharon Hills Memorial Gardens, Dover.
Vivian Elaine Barker, 77
MILLSBORO - Vivian Elaine Barker of Millsboro died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in the Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. She was 77.
Mrs. Barker was born in Spring City, Pa., daughter of the late William L. and Sadie F. Garber.
She was a veteran of Korea, serving in the U.S. Navy.
Mrs. Barker was a retired teacher for the mentally handicapped, formerly employed by the states of Delaware and Maryland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benny W. Barker, in 1982.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth Barker; and four grandchildren, Brittney, Chad, Blake and Ben.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road, Millsboro.

Larry Edward Dennis, 46
SALISBURY, Md. - Larry Edward Dennis of Salisbury died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, in Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He was 46.
Mr. Dennis was born in Salisbury, son of Beatrice L. Dennis of Newark and the late Herman Dennis Sr.
He was a 1977 graduate of Snow Hill High School and a member of the former Cedar Chapel Methodist Church.
Mr. Dennis was associated with the Go-Getters of Salisbury. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Corlas Dennis and Herman "Randy" Dennis Jr. of Newark; two sisters, Alfreda Dennis of Chestertown and Helen Stallings of Newark; four nieces; four nephews; three great nieces; two great nephews; and a host of aunts and uncles.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury.
Service will be noon Saturday in Calvary Pentecostal Church in Bishopville, where friends also may call one hour earlier.

Charles F. Gunkel, 72
DOVER - Charles F. Gunkel of Dover died of respiratory failure Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 72.
Mr. Gunkel was born Oct. 19, 1931, in Long Island City, N.Y., son of the late Charles William Gunkel and Helena Oeschsle.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He retired in 1990 after 36 years working for Newsday in Long Island. He recently worked at Sam's Club as a greeter.
Mr. Gunkel loved working with wood, especially pine. He was also an avid golfer and was a fan of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Eva Koptchak Gunkel; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Lana and Javier Luis of Browns Mills, N.J., Ann Desposito and Tim Harrington of Dover, Holly and Mike Lipko of Magnolia and Katrina and Don Hensley of Middle Island, N.Y.; a brother and sister-in-law, William A. and Ann Gunkel of Mobile, Ala.; a cousin and his wife, Konrad and Imogard Burget; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Leo Leonard Knoedler Sr., 80
ROCK HALL, Md. - Leo Leonard Knoedler Sr. of Rock Hall died Thursday, May 13, 2004, in Corsica Hill Center, Centreville. He was 80.
Mr. Knoedler was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Baltimore, son of the late Gerard and Beatrice O'Connor Knoedler.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre.
Mr. Knoedler was an electrician by trade, retiring from the Eaton Corp. as a maintenance supervisor in 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Agnes Osterling Knoedler; three children, Leo L. Knoedler Jr. of Baltimore, Robert J. Knoedler and his wife Margaret of Chestertown, and Angel Kinney and her husband Bob of Hohenwald, Tenn.; a brother, Frank Knoedler and his wife Rosemarie of White Hall; two sisters, Ruth Gaphardt of Baltimore and Lorretta Cecil and her husband Bill of Lewes; five grandchildren, Eric Thomas Knoedler and his wife Tina, Jennifer Torres and her husband Hugo, Damean Fairbank, Andrea Kinney and J.L. Kinney; and three great-grandchildren, Anne Marie and Norma Torres and Jaylin Fairbank.
Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. in St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Rock Hall.

Gloria Marie (Greaver) Pase, 70
ELLENDALE - Gloria Marie (Greaver) Pase of Ellendale died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 70.
Mrs. Pase was born Sept. 21, 1933, in West Virginia.
She resided in Baltimore before moving to Ellendale 31 years ago.
Mrs. Pase was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Pase Sr.
She is survived by two sons, George Allen Pase of Baltimore and Donald R. Pase Jr. of Ellendale; a daughter, Della Evans of Georgetown; several brothers and sisters, all of Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were private.
She will be laid to rest in West Virginia.
