Mildred F. West Shelton, 86
MILLSBORO - Mildred F. West Shelton of Millsboro died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 86.
Mrs. Shelton was born Oct. 25, 1915, in Laurel, daughter of the late Eubie and Katie West.
She had been a resident of Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro.
She retired from King Cole Co. Store, Milton, around 1990.
Mrs. Shelton was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Shelton.
She is survived by two sons, Gary W. Shelton of Millsboro and Wilmer Wolford of Hartford, Conn.; two daughters, Jean W. Jackson of Philadelphia and Ross Fiddiman of Frankford; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Harmony U.M. Church, John Williams Highway (Del. 24), Millsboro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church. The Rev. Claudia D. Waters will officiate.
Burial will be in Harmony Church Cemetery.
Virginia Lee Stare, 79
INGLESIDE, Md. - Virginia Lee Stare of Ingleside died of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in the Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville. She was 79.
Mrs. Stare was born July 3, 1923, in Easton, daughter of the late Charles and Esther Hignutt Andrews. She had been a lifetime resident of the area.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Stare Sr., June 30, 1995; and a grandson, Patrick Ogle.
She is survived by a son, Carl Stare Jr. of Ingleside; three daughters, Joan Brooks Tinsley of Kissimmee, Fla., Mary Shepherd of Lakeland, Fla., and Charleen Phillips of Easton; two brothers, Thurman Andrews of Bridgeville, Del., and Ray Andrews of Easton; three sisters, Marie Lomax of Easton, Charlotte Bartlett of Laurel, Del., and Shirley Andrews of Greenwood, Del.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Ridgely Cemetery, Ridgely.
Ruth Marie Sterling, 81
PRESTON, Md. - Ruth Marie Sterling of Preston died of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in William Hill Manor in Easton. She was 81.
Mrs. Sterling was born March 5, 1921, in Boston, daughter of the late Daniel and Anne Greene Hagan.
For years, she worked at Harris Seafood in Kent Narrows before joining the Queen Anne's County Department of Social Services and Upper Shore Aging, from which she retired nine years ago.
Mrs. Sterling attended the Chapel of the Holy Child Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Wesley Sterling, in 1981; a son, Richard Sterling, Feb. 16, 2001; one brother; and one sister.
She is survived by two sons, William Carroll Sterling and Donald Joseph Sterling, both of Preston; a sister, Gertrude McMullen, of Hartford, Conn.; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Beulah, near Hurlock.
Burial will be in the Veterans Cemetery.
Ruth E. Brooke, 73
DOVER - Ruth E. Brooke of Dover died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in her home with family. She was 73.
Mrs. Brooke was born April 13, 1929, in Abbeyville, Ala., daughter of the late Thomas and Nettie (Hall) Palmer.
She received her education from the local Alabama school system.
She worked with the National Cup Co. and Dover Air Force Base cafeteria.
Mrs. Brooke enjoyed working with her yard and garden, cooking and canning for others and regaling them with her culinary delights. She enjoyed fishing with her husband. She will be remembered as a loving and caring person.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose and Sarah; five brothers, Thomas, James T., Jack, Robert and Charles; and a grandchild, Melanie.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roger N. Brooke of Dover; three sons and two daughters-in-law, William R. and Rita Price of Brookhaven, Miss., Neil I. Brooke of Seaford and Robert S. and Leslie Brooke of Dover; and 14 grandchildren, Rachel, Justin, Todd, Erika and Gregory Brooke, all of Seaford, and Robert, Daniel, Shelley, Samuel, Roger, Jacob, Olivia, Jeffrey and Ryan Brooke, all of Dover.
Friends may call from 7-9 tonight in Trader Funeral Home, Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
Francis 'Pat' Cahill, 52
PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Francis "Pat" Cahill of Port Richey died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, in his home. He was 52.
Mr. Cahill was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Francis P. Cahill Jr. and Jennifer Cahill of Newark, Joseph S. Cahill of New Castle, Del., and Daniel L. Cahill of Asheville, N.C.; a daughter, Angel Murphy of New Castle; his parents, Joseph and Alice Cahill of Middletown, Del.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Marie and Michael and Elizabeth, all of Newark, Del., and Timothy and Justine of Townsend, Del.; three sisters, Alice K. Lams and her husband, Michael, of Newark, Barbara L. Hahn and her husband, William, of Wilmington, Del., and Bertha Aiken of Edgewood, Md.; five grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

L. Marvin Chance Sr., 49
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - L. Marvin Chance Sr. of Federalsburg died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in University of Maryland Medical Hospital, Baltimore. He was 49.
Mr. Chance was born Aug. 16, 1953, in Easton, son of Betty Willey Chance of Federalsburg and the late Charles Edward "Hot Dog" Chance.
He was a graduate of Col. Richardson High School in 1971.
Mr. Chance was director of fleet maintenance for Tri-Gas & Oil Co. and had worked for the company for 33 years.
He loved to hunt and fish. He loved NASCAR racing and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Mr. Chance was a member of Federalsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5246.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Valerie D. Breuil Chance; three sons and three daughters-in-law, L. Marvin Chance Jr. and Kelley Chance of Stafford, Va., John E. and Cynthia Chance of Owings Mills and David W. and Diana Chance of Beaufort, S.C.; six grandchildren, Jacob C. Chance, Kelcy R. Chance, A. Brennen Chance, Cameron V. Chance, Lilian P. Chance and Chase A. Chance; a sister, Della M. Sinclair of Preston; three brothers, Ernie R. Chance of Hurlock, Edward L. Chance of Moss Point, Miss., and Vernon D. Chance of Denton; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Union United Methodist Church, Federalsburg, where friends may call 11/2 hours earlier. Dr. David Charles Salmons of New Bern (N.C.) Church of God will officiate.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Paul Elmer Floyd, 73
DOVER - Paul Elmer Floyd of Dover died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 73.
Mr. Floyd was born April 25, 1929 in Middlebury, Ind., son of the late Heber and Mildred (Thompson) Floyd.
He was a technical sergeant for the U.S. Air Force, serving 20 years and retiring in 1971.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Floyd; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul and JoAnn Floyd of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark and Sherry Floyd of Phoenix and David Floyd of Columbus, Ohio; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Winifred and Robert Talemal of Wyoming and Gwen and Pat Farris of Pittsburgh; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Wayne and Eva Dixon of Little Creek; a sister, Mary Bill of Orlando, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Brice Sidney Harris, 44
BRIDGEVILLE - Brice Sidney Harris of Bridgeville died from complications of an infection Saturday, May 6, 2000, in the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. He was 44.
Mr. Harris worked as a farm equipment operator for Steve Yenling Farms in Bridgeville.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy V. Harris; a daughter, Angel Lee Harris of Delmar; a stepson, Michael Truitt of Hebron, Md.; his father, William N. Harris Sr. of Bridgeville; five brothers, William N. Jr. of Pocomoke City, Md. Michael C. of Salisbury, Bd., Keith A. of Seaford, Mark W. of Dover and Charles Horner of Felton; two sisters, Linda r. Zollars of Felton and Gloria J. Maynard of Albermarle, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in Blades Cemetery.
George Lee Nock, 81
MILLSBORO - George Lee Nock of Millsboro died Friday, May 5, 2000, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Pocomoke City, Md., the son of the late George and Rebecca Nock.
He formerly was employed as a truck driver for Green's Furnace & Gas Co. in Princess Anne, Md.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Dennis Nock, in 1980.
He is survived by three sons, George L. Nock of Washington, D.C., Galway L. Nock, and his wife, Jeanette, of Millsboro, Linwood O. Nock of Frankford; a daughter, Yolanda Nock of Millsboro; two stepsons, Terry Nock of Frankford and Rodney Nock of Millsboro; stepdaughter, Pandora Nock of Georgetown, a daughter-in-law, with whom he lived for the past 10 years, Mary Nock; 31 grandchildren; and 64 great-grandchildren.
Service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to service. The Rev. Annie Jane Custis will officiate.
Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Baptist Church, Millsboro.
Phyllis M. Saxton, 88
DOVER - Phyllis M. Saxton of Dover died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Country Rest Home in Greenwood. She was 88.
She was born on March 14, 1912, in Nashua, N.H., to Eugene and Edith Petts.
She was one of the three organizing woman who started the Modern Maturity Center on the corner of South Bradford and Division Streets in Dover.
She loved helping people in their time of need. She enjoyed oil painting, sewing and making custom gowns. She looked forward to growing and picking strawberries.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Saxton, in 1979; two brothers, Raymond and Clayton Petts; and a grandson, John Saxton.
She is survived by two sons, Walter Saxton of Dover and Irving Saxton of Bridgeville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Thursday at Trader Funeral Home Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service. The Rev. Mark Yoder Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be at Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover.

John Preston Reed Sr., 86
MILTON - John Preston Reed Sr. of Milton died Monday, May 8, 2000, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 86.
Mr. Reed was born in Milton the son of the late John Phillip Reed and Laura Smith Reed.
He served in the U.S. Army, a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Reed worked as a manager for Waples Lumber Co. in Milton, retiring many years ago.
He enjoyed gardening and being with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary S. Reed, in 1993.
He is survived by a son, J. Preston Reed of Milton; a daughter, Ann R. Clendaniel of McCormick, S.C.; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Mary Leigh, 89
DOVER - Mary Leigh of Dover died Friday, May 5, 2000, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 89.
Mrs. Leigh was born on May 23, 1910, in Waterbury, Conn. the daughter of the late Mary Lamantang and Adalard Ouimet.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Leigh lived in Dover with her son. She previously lived in Holiday City, N.J., since 1973, and earlier in Jersey City, N.J.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Leigh; and a daughter, Audrey Leigh.
She is survived by four sons, Frank Leigh of Dover, David Leigh of Rahway, N.J., Thomas Leigh of Sparta, N.J., and John Leigh of Plainfield, N.J.; a daughter, Rosalie McLeod of Florida; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service will be at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Whiting, N.J.

Ule Kenton Jr., 71
MAGNOLIA - Ule Kenton Jr. of Magnolia died of cancer Monday, May 8, 2000, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 71.
Mr. Kenton was born on Dec. 21, 1928, in Milford, the son of the late Ule and Florence Smith Kenton, Sr.
He was a sales representative for Suburban Propane of Dover, retiring in 1990 after 31 years of service. He also was a clerk at C.T. Scuse & Sons for 25 years.
Mr. Kenton enjoyed spending time at the Wilson & Scuse farms. He also was an avid hunter and gun collector, and enjoyed all sports.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Kenton, in 1972; and a sister, Elizabeth Mauger, in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte C. Kenton of Magnolia; two daughters and their husbands, Patricia K. and David Scott Luke of Magnolia and Denise K. and Michael T. Stypinski of Clayton; three grandchildren, Darren Luke of Magnolia, Ryan M. and Jason D. Stypinski, both of Clayton.
Service will be 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, where friends may call 6-8 p.m.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Barrett's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

Carl Willie Lewis, 83
ROXANA - Carl Willie Lewis of rural Roxana died of a pulmonary embolism Sunday, May 7, 2000, in his home. He was 83.
Mr. Lewis was born in Frankford, the son of the late Willie G. and Ray Godfrey Lewis.
He was a graduate of the Mount Airy School for the Deaf in Pennsylvania.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy P. Cherry Lewis, in 1994.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Leona Harmon and Jan Harmon Jr. of Frankford; two brothers, Orlando Lewis of Roxana and Garrison Lewis of Dagsboro; three sisters, Catherine Northam of Selbyville and Gladys LeKites and Harriet Rayne, both of Millsboro; and three grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Roxana Cemetery, with the Rev. Atwood Berry officiating.

Clarence 'Les' Lester Benfer, 37
RIDGELY, Md. - Clarence "Les" Lester Benfer of Ridgely died of natural causes Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in Memorial Hospital of Easton. He was 37.
Mr. Benfer was born on Dec. 6, 1962, in Easton, the son of John E. DeFord and Beverly Ann Ackridge of Ridgely.
He was an avid wrestling fan.
Mr. Benfer worked for Michael Redden as a painter.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Annie Elizabeth Schmitt of Ridgely; a brother, John Henry Butler of Denton; a sister, Angela M. Collins of Centreville; an aunt, Betty Jane Nichols of Ridgely; a cousin, Kevin Schmitt of Tilghman Island; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.
Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fleegle & Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
