DOVER - Ricky Calvin Bowser of Dover died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in his home. He was 41.
Mr. Bowser was born March 25, 1961, in North Carolina, son of Raymond and Mary Ellen Bowser.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in 1980.
He worked as a public record search branch manager for Hylind Search Co. Inc.
Mr. Bowser enjoyed gospel, jazz and R&B music.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two close friends, Charlene Rainer of Dover and Jim Hylind of Baltimore.
Services will be 8 tonight in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, near Millsboro.

Bertha J. Conaway, 106
SEAFORD - Bertha J. Conaway of Seaford died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in Life Care of Lofland, Seaford. She was 106.
Mrs. Conaway was born June 6, 1896.

Helen J. Scott Merrick, 60
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Helen J. Scott Merrick of Federalsburg died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, Del. She was 60.
Mrs. Merrick was born May 13, 1942, in Milford, Del., daughter of the late James Franklin Scott and Bessie Mae Lare Scott.
She was a graduate of Greenwood (Del.) High School, class of 1960.
Mrs. Merrick retired from E.I. DuPont after 27 years of service in 1993.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Eugene Merrick, Oct. 15, 1972.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, whom she married Nov. 21, 1970, Wendell E. Merrick; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wendell Eugene "Gene" Merrick II and Michelle Merrick, and Glenn E. Merrick, all of Federalsburg; two grandchildren, Savanah G. Merrick and Kevin R. Merrick, both of Federalsburg; two sisters, Joan Willin and Betty Bowne, both of Seaford; a sister-in-law and her husband, DeeAnn and Mark Meredith of Federalsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A., Federalsburg.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home, where friends may also call one hour earlier. The Rev. Glenn Lyburn will officiate.

Mary L. Williams, 98
MILLSBORO - Mary L. Williams of Millsboro died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in her home. She was 98.
Mrs. Williams was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late Charles E. and Manie Jones Moore.
She was a secretary for Townsends Inc. in Millsboro for 77 years, retiring on May 31, 1999.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Carey's United Methodist Church, Millsboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Williams, in 1977; and two brothers, William Moore and Oliver Moore.
She is survived by a nephew, Gerald O. Moore, and Mr. Moore's wife, Marion, of Frankford; and a grand-nephew, Gerald O. Moore Jr. of Frankford.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Ted Elser will officiate.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.

James R. 'Jim' Atkinson, 63
CLAYTON - James R. "Jim" Atkinson of Clayton died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, in his home. He was 63.
Mr. Atkinson was born Nov. 23, 1938, son of the late Thomas Hills Atkinson and Ica McGee Atkinson of Stumps Corner near Townsend.
He was a 1959 graduate of Middletown High School. He also attended the Pittsburgh Art Institute in Pittsburgh for two years. He was an accomplished artist and was well known for his wood carvings and paintings of rural landscapes, wildlife and various sketches on restaurant placemats around the MOT area.
Mr. Atkinson served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.
He volunteered at the Corbit Calloway Memorial Library in Odessa, teaching art classes. He retired in 2000 after 30 years with VPI Mirrex in Delaware City.
Mr. Atkinson was a quiet man and a talented artist who enjoyed gardening and watching nature and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by three brothers, Herbert T., and his wife, Janet, of Middletown, Thomas H. of Clayton and Richard H., and his wife, Elaine, of Townsend; a sister, Elizabeth A. 'Betsy' Segars, and her husband, R. Steven, of Clayton; an aunt, Charity McNatt of Middletown; four nephews, Herbert T. Jr. and William T. Atkinson and Steven and Daniel Segars; a niece, Stephanie A. Segars; two grand-nephews; and four grand-nieces.
Services will be noon Thursday in Grace Presbyterian Church, 13 Pennington St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Townsend Cemetery.

F. Barbara (Ainsworth) Bateman, 72
REHOBOTH BEACH - F. Barbara (Ainsworth) Bateman of Rehoboth Beach died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002. She was 72.
Mrs. Bateman was born in Wilmington, daughter of the late Arthur Wallace and Myrtle Kathrine Wilkinson Ainsworth.
She had been employed for 34 years by Diamond State Telephone Co. and held the position of senior field clerk at the time of her retirement in 1982.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, was a past president of the Telephone Pioneers, and had served as a volunteer at Beebe Medical Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Wallace Ainsworth Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, George J. Bateman Jr. of Rehoboth Beach; a son, Charles Wesley Bradford III of Rehoboth Beach; three daughters, Victoria B. Pragg of Chesapeake City, Md., Rebecca L. Crouse, and her husband, Jerry, of Millsboro, and Janice M. Ward of Lewes; a sister, Janice C. Ireland of Wilmington; a brother, Ralph David Wilkinson of Wilmington; and six grandchildren, Jennifer L. Bradford, Charles W. Bradford IV, William Keith Pragg, Gary W. Pragg, Joseph P. Bradford and Adam M. Bradford.

Shirley T. Cheesman, 70
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Shirley T. Cheesman of Federalsburg died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, in memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 70.
Mrs. Cheesman was born Nov. 7, 1931, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Frank Towers and the late Lloyd James, who raised her, and Mabel Todd James Kelly.
She graduated from Cambridge High School, class of 1949.
Mrs. Cheesman worked in the accounting department of the former Con Agra Poultry in Hurlock, retiring in 1991 after 15 years of service. She was secretary and treasurer of District 6 Little League for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert R. Cheesman, on May 11, 1973; and a sister, Jean Willis.
She is survived by a daughter, Sherrie Howard of Federalsburg; three sons, Martin E. 'Marty' Cheesman of Federalsburg, Richard A. Cheesman of Seaford, Del., and Terry B. Cheesman of Federalsburg; seven grandchildren, Robert Howard, Mark Howard, Garver Cheesman, Travis Cheesman, Ashley Cheesman, all of Federalsburg, and Blaine Cheesman and Brady Cheesman, both of Seaford; two stepsisters, Nettie Belle Stevens of Cambridge and Mary Lou Lambardi of Florida; three stepbrothers, Lee James of Federalsburg, Cody James of Hebron and William James of Cambridge; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie Audrey Hicks, 61
DOVER - Marie Audrey Hicks of Dover, formerly of Millington, Md., died suddenly Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in her home. She was 61.
Ms. Hicks was born in Chestertown, Md., the daughter of the late Emery and Myrtle (Camile) Martin. She was raised by Marie Harris.
She spent her formative years in the Millington-Kent County area.
She attended Kennard High School, Centreville, Md. She worked for Playtex Apparel Co. in Dover, retiring in 1997.
Ms. Hicks was extremely active in First Baptist Church, having held such offices as treasurer and secretary. She served on a number of other church commit-tees and boards.
She was very family-oriented, loved to cook, and particularly loved being with her children and grandchildren. She was also concerned with the welfare of peo-ple in her community, as she was always lending a helping hand to those who were in need.
She is survived by two daughters, Norarene E. Hicks of Millington and Audrey D. Camile of Golts, Md.; two sons, Julius L. Hicks, and his wife, Shaneeda, of Dover, and Albert D. Camile of Cheswold; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Cheswold, where friends may call two hours prior to service.
Burial will be in John Wesley Cemetery in Millington.

William H. Buchter Jr., 79
LONG NECK - William H. Buchter Jr. of Long Neck, formerly of Reading, Pa., died of heart failure Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Buchter was born in Lancaster County, Pa., the son of the late William H. and Minnie N. Hertzog Butcher.
He worked as a self-employed Barber for 30 years in Sinking Spring, Pa., and owned Oasis Tavern in Reading, Pa., prior to retiring to Long Neck.
Mr. Buchter was a member of the Masonic Chandlers Lodge 227 and was past commander of the Legion of Honor of the Rajah Temple, both in Reading. He also was a member of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard-Riverdale, Mason Dixon VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View, Elks BPOE Lodge 2540 of Lewes, Sinking Springs Fire Co., Hamburg Moose Lodge, Hamburg, Pa., Goodwill Fire Co., Reading, Robisonia Fire Co., Berks County Fireman's Association, Pike Township Sportsman's Club and Womelsdorf Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Daisey J. Buchter; a son, Ted M. Buchter of Moorestown, N.J.; two daughters, Barbara Bonnie Haas of Mohton, Pa., and Pattie L. Mason of Arlington, Texas; three stepsons, Randall Blimline of Mooresville, N.C., William Blimline of Murrray, Ky., and Gene Blimline of Reading; a brother, Earl Buchter; and four sisters, Kathryn Brossman, M. Ruth Steffy, Betty Zimmerman and Dolly Vozella, all of Reading.
Masonic service will be noon Sunday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours prior to service.

Henry Edison Figgatt, 71
MARYDEL- Henry Edison Figgatt of Marydel died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in his home. He was 71.
Mr. Figgatt was born on April 2, 1929, in Charleston, W. Va.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947.
Mr. Figgatt retired in 1987 from Nanticoke Homes in Greenwood, where he had worked as a self-employed drywall contractor.
He enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Figgatt was a member of First Baptist Church in Marydel.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Violet Virginia Figgatt; two sons, Harold Wayne Figgatt of Kenbridge, Va., and Charles E. "Chuck" Figgatt of Townsend; three daughters, Marilyn Pickett of Amelia, Va., Deborah Griffith of Greenwood and Cheryl Reedy of Greenwood; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be noon Tuesday at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown.

Isadore Bell Young, 96
LINCOLN - Isadore Bell Young of Lincoln died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, in Milford Center Genesis Elder Care. She was 96.
Mrs. Young was born in Ira, Ohio, the daughter of the late Richard and Cora Underwood Howe.
She and her husband began farming in the Milton and Lincoln areas in 1929.
She was an avid gardener who enjoyed growing strawberries and flowers, until she became disabled in 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard R. Young Sr., in 1982, a granddaughter, Diane R. Young, in 1991, and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Young ,in 1999.
She is survived by five sons, and their wives, Robert L. and Barbara, of Lincoln, Charles, of Miami, Richard E. and Joan, of Lincoln, James H. and Joyce, of Laurel, and Howard R. Jr., of Lincoln; a sister, Nina Stanford, of Ira; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call two hours prior to service.
Burial will be private.

Clinton Washington Dixon, 80
DOVER - Clinton Washington Dixon, of Dover, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Capital Health Care Services Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, in Dover, after a long illness. He was 80.
Mr. Dixon was born Dec. 7, 1919, the son of the late Joshua James Dixon and Mary Hester Hayman.
He received early education in the Sussex County School District (Farmington, Greenwood and Phyllis Wheatley schools) in Georgetown.
Mr. Dixon was a World War II veteran and received a Good Conduct Medal.
He was self-employed and farmed his own property.
Mr. Dixon was a loving father and grandfather. He was a very outgoing, caring and helpful person who would help anyone in the time of need.
He is survived by three sons, Harold James Dixon, of Bridgeville, and his wife, Carolyn Dixon, Larry Eugene Dixon, of Philadelphia, and Craig Bruce Dixon, of Las Vegas, and his wife, Lisa Dixon; three daughters, Ellen Marie Quail, of Dover and her husband, Barrett Quail, Janet Elaine Purnell, of Berlin, Md., and her husband, Owens Purnell, Judy Diane Roach, of Bridgeville, and her husband, Charles Roach; two brothers, Robert Dixon and George Dixon, both of Bridgeville; two sisters, Dorothy Gayle, of Greenwood, and Helen Pritchett, of Harrington; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dorothy Pearson, 76
MILFORD - Dorothy Pearson of Milford died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, in her home. She was 76.
Mrs. Pearson was born in Harrington, the daughter of the late Albert and Edna Pearson.
She worked at DuPont earlier in her life and also at the Powder Plant in Milford, starting in 1943.
Mrs. Pearson's favorite pastime involved yard sale shopping, of which she thoroughly enjoyed.
She is survived by a brother, Daniel R. Pearson, of Angola; a sister-in-law, Lillian Pearson, of Harrington; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hollywood Cemetery in Harrington, where the Rev. Ted Wood of Calvary Wesleyan Church will officiate.

Cyrus Savarese, 58
MILLSBORO - Cyrus Savarese, of Pinewater Farms, near Millsboro, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, in his home. He was 58.
Mr. Savarese was the son of Adelaide Cambria Savarese, of Ridge, N.Y., and the late Edward Savarese.
He retired in 1986 from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 3 in New York.
Mr. Savarese enjoyed rebuilding old cars, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and fishing with his neighbors in Pinewater Farms.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Jane Savarese; three daughters, Christine Barral and Karen Savarese, both of Huntington, N.Y., Patricia Scalise, of Commack, N.Y.; a son, Edward Savarese, of Harbeson; a sister, Mary Lou Glazer, of Northport, N.Y.; and a grandson, Justin Tyler Scalise, of Commack.
Service will be private.

Alberta Lillian Sterling Tilghman, 69
ROCK HALL, Md. - Alberta Lillian Sterling Tilghman, of Rock Hall (Edesville), died Friday, May 12, 2000, in Easton Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 69.
Mrs. Tilghman was born Jan. 4, 1931, the daughter of the late Weldon and Annie Sterling, of Crisfield, Md.
She attended school in Kent County. On Dec. 20, 1981, she married John W. Tilghman.
She was employed for several years at Rock Hall Seafood, in Rock Hall.
Mrs. Tilghman was a faithful member of Aaron Chapel Church until her illness.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas, James and Charles Sterling, and a grandson, Ronda Wickes.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Ernest H. Wickes, of Rock Hall; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary Wickes, of Rock Hall; a stepson, Pastor Charles Tilghman Sr., of Newark, Del.; six stepdaughters, Rosalie Ringgold, of Chestertown, Dorothy Cooper, of Rock Hall, Thelma Tilghman, of Pondtown, Maude Jones, of Coleman, Lucille Rochester, of Elkton, and Tina Hackett, of Worton; three grandchildren, Letonia Wickes, of Rock Hall, Ernest L. Wickes Jr., of Millington, and Lakesha Wickes, of Smyrna, Del.; four great-grandchildren; a sister who raised her, Lillian Reed, of Easton; a sister-in-law, Mamie Kyle, of Alexandria, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

DENTON, Md. - Vermie Lee Dean, of Denton, died Friday, May 12, 2000, in University of Maryland Shock Trauma, Baltimore. She was 52.
