Paul C. Harrison, 76
GALENA, Md. - Paul C. Harrison of Galena died, after a short illness, Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in Union Hospital, Elkton. He was 76.
Mr. Harrison was born Jan. 20, 1926, in Asheville, N.C., son of the late Paul R. and Anna Louise Carey Harrison.
In 1939, he and his family moved to Perryville.
Mr. Harrison served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a sergeant in radio communications in Lisbon, Portugal.
Upon graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in mechanical engineering, he worked for RCA in Moorestown, N.J., on a defense contract. He retired in 1988 from DuPont as a financial adviser after 23 years of service.
Mr. Harrison was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and was past treasurer, and of the Galena Lions Club, serving two terms as president and once as zone chairman.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey Thompson Harrison; a son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Joanna Harrison of Cumberland; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and James Lacey of Bel Air; five grandchildren, Brooke Lacey, Alison Lacey, Luke Harrison, Geri Pase and Paul-Michael Pase; and a great-grandson, Isaac Harrison Pace.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Earleville.
Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery, Perryville.

Albert E. Powers Jr., 42
CAMDEN - Albert E. Powers Jr. of Camden, and a former longtime resident of Claymont, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes, after a long illness, Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in his home. He died with his best friend, Lady Penelope "Penny" Powers, an 8-year-old yellow Labrador retriever who was able to warn him of an upcoming seizure, present. He was 42.
Mr. Powers retired from the Daimler-Chrysler plant in Newark due to his illness, and was a longtime resident of Camden.
During his illness, he devoted his life to helping other people that surrounded him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Powers Sr. and Mary Powers; and a sister, Mary Ellen Duhadaway.
He is survived by two sisters, Alice Russo of Jacksonville, Fla., and Deb Powers Guldin of Smyrna; his close friends with whom he lived, Randy J. Krouse, Angelia "Missi" Moffet, Karen Nelson, Ashley Krouse and Amber Krouse, all of Camden; and his dog.
Memorial services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Faries Funeral Home, 1250 S. Governors Ave., Dover, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m.
Burial will be private.

Vincent A. Vari, 77
TOWNSEND - Vincent A. Vari of Townsend died of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 77.
Mr. Vari had owned and operated Vari's Landscaping Co. during the 1950s and '60s, and he also owned the Townsend Sub Shop from 1973 to 1978.
He enjoyed playing bingo, the Dover Slots and horse racing
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane G. Vari, in 1992; a son, Lloyd J., in 1986; and a daughter, Gladys Guiswite, in 1995.
He is survived by two sons, Paul W. of Smyrna and Joseph V. of Middletown; two daughters, Vincetta J. Jones of Smyrna and Joanne L. Klingler of Townsend; a sister, Ann L. Haigh of Rehoboth Beach; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Townsend Cemetery.

Loretta (Costello) Pyne, 77
LEWES - Loretta (Costello) Pyne of Lewes died, after a long illness, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in the Lewes Convalescent Center. She was 77.
Mrs. Pyne was a native of Washington, D.C.
She was a graduate of St. Cecilia's High School in 1942, and retired from a career as an office manager in real estate.
She loved to travel. She enjoyed the beach and was an avid reader.
Mrs. Pyne resided in Lewes for the past 19 years, where she was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church and the Lewes Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Pyne, in 1973.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda J. (Pyne) Rains of Arvada, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Rains of Providence, R.I., Deborah Silva of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Daniel Rains of Arvada.

Hilda McCabe Adams, 71
BRIDGEVILLE - Hilda McCabe Adams of Bridgeville died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in her home, surrounded by her family. She was 71.
Mrs. Adams was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Millville, daughter of the late Amos F. and Mary Marguerite West McCabe.
She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1953 with a degree in elementary education. After graduation, she taught fourth grade in Laurel for two years, and then, stayed home to raise her children.
Mrs. Adams enjoyed spending time in the summer at Bethany Beach. She loved her grandchildren and especially enjoyed watching them play sports.
After the death of her son, Mrs. Adams became instrumental in the passage of the organ donor bill in Delaware. She spoke at the Council of State Governments Eastern Region Conference, encouraging all states to pass the organ donor bill. As the result of her effort, numerous states have adopted similar bills.
Mrs. Adams was a member of Union United Methodist Church, Bridgeville, and attended St. Matthew's By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, Fenwick Island. She also was a member of the Bridgeville Lioness club and the Seaford Golf and Country Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Brent Adams Sr.; and a grandson.
She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Sen. Thurman G. Adams Jr.; two daughters, Lynn Kokjohn of Greenville and Polly Mervine of Bridgeville; three sisters, Pauline Higgins of Seaford, Ruth Boyle of Millville and Frances Stroud of Seaford; seven grandsons, Brent Jr., Chris and Matt Adams, Drew and Brad Slater, Kyle Kokjohn and Stephen Mervine; two step-grandsons, Trevor and Jeremy Kokjohn; a great-grandson, Brent Adams III; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Katie Adams; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Union United Methodist Church, Bridgeville, where friends may call four hours earlier.
Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Harold F. Breeding, 76
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Harold F. Breeding of Federalsburg died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in his home. He was 76.
Mr. Breeding was born July 14, 1926, in Hickman, son of the late Fred and Hazel Breeding.
He retired in 1993 from Crest Hill Industry, Denton. He was a poultry grower.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam E. Breeding, July 11, 2001.
He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Absher of Georgetown, Del; two sons, Joseph Murphy of Denton and Robert Murphy of Harrington, Del.; five brothers, Raymond Breeding, Philip Breeding and Leroy Breeding, all of Federalsburg, Gilbert Breeding of Seaford, Del., and John Breeding of Laurel, Del.; two sisters, Esther Cluley and Louise Meredith, both of Federalsburg; five grandchildren, Michelle Murphy, Wade Murphy, Heather Murphy, Jason Horsman and Karly Horsman; and a great-granddaughter, Kaila Horsman.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Moore Funeral Home PA, 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Robert O. Conklin, 75
LONG NECK - Robert O. Conklin of Long Neck died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 75.
Mr. Conklin was born in Washington, D.C., son of the late Orland Conklin and Mildred Kress Conklin.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He was an exhibit contractor for the U.S. government in Washington.
Mr. Conklin was a member of American Legion Post 177, Fairfax, Va., and American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale, Millsboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosaleen Williams Conklin, in 1972.
He is survived by two sons, Timothy L. Conklin and Dennis M. Conklin, both of Fairfax; a daughter, Barbara Conklin Teter of Newark; and three grandchildren, Matt, Kathryn and William Andrew.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road.

Robert B. Pruett, 72
GREENSBORO, Md. - Robert B. Pruett of Greensboro died of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in his home. He was 72.
Mr. Pruett was born in Sayersville, Va., the son of the late Earl McMinn Pearson Pruett and Amelia Ann Zarilda Shrader Pruett.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Home, 309 North St., Milford.World War II.
For many years, he worked for Gale Electric in Denton, until 1974. In 1976 he went to work for General Foods in Dover, Del., until retiring in 1988.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, B. Elinor Pruett, Sept. 20, 1977; and a daughter, Donna Smith, March 2, 1996.
He is survived by a son, Robert J. Pruett of Greensboro; two daughters, Jeannie Ober of Greensboro and Carol Clendaniel of Denton; three brothers, Harold Pruett of Gainesville, Fla., Kent Pruett of Mechanicsville, Va., and the Rev. Dale Pruett of Dover; four grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren.
Service will be 3 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Mary K. Hart, 69
FELTON - Mary K. Hart of Felton died of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in her home. She was 69.
Mrs. Hart was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Newport, Tenn., the daughter of Earnestine Kyle of Newport and the late William Henry Kyle Sr.
Her early education was at Tanner Training and High School in Newport. Later she attended junior college at Swift Memorial College in Rodgersville, Tenn., and completed her education at Knoxville College, graduating as class valedictorian.
Mrs. Hart's teaching career started at Mound Bayou High School, Mound Bayou, Miss., where she met and married Hutchinson Hart Jr. As a new teacher, she displayed enthusiasm and dedication which earned her the title of "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" for 1953-1954. After a seven-year stay and leaving a lasting impression on their students, the Harts moved to Dover. In 1961, Mrs. Hart began teaching English at William Henry Comprehensive High School. It was there that both Harts' legacy of mentoring and inspiring of students had its impact on the Kent County community.
In 1967 she accepted a position at Central Middle School as an eighth-grade humanities teacher. Her devotion to her students made her an overwhelming choice for the Capitol School District's "Teacher of the Year" for 1973-74.
After a brief illness, Mrs. Hart retired to enjoy two loves of her life: reading and movies.
As a fervent believer in Christ, she was an active affiliated member of Mount Plymouth AME Church of Felton. She also maintained membership in her home church, New Zion Methodist of Newport.
Throughout all her involvements, Mrs. Hart continued to be a devoted wife, mother and "Na-Na." Her family will always remember her as one who encouraged them to work not at today's level, but at the higher level demanded by the great forces affecting their lives.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband; and a brother, William Henry Kyle Jr.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Terry Hart of Millville, N.J.; a sister and brother-in-law, Madella "Lucy" and Craig Belton of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters-in-law, two grandsons, Kyle Hart of Riverdale, Md., and Brandon Hart of Millville; a devoted aunt, Helen Price of Springfield, Mass.; her Mount Plymouth Church family; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and generations of students who were privileged to have entered her classroom, as she was to have entered their lives.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion AME Church, corner of Queen and Fulton streets, Dover.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Michael A. Hill, 64
LEWES - Michael A. Hill of Lewes died of heart failure Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in his home. He was 64.
Mr. Hill was born in Lewes, the son of the late Habrick and Elizabeth Marshall Hill.
He served with the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the lightship "Overfalls."
As a young man, Mr. Hill managed the Arco gasoline station in Lewes. He built and was the co-owner of the Cape Henlopen Motel in Lewes. He served on the Board of Public Works for the City of Lewes from 1967-1972, and from 1986 until the time of his death, he was a substitute teacher for the Cape Henlopen School District.
He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and of Jefferson Masonic Lodge 15, both in Lewes.
Mr. Hill was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth H. Hill; three daughters, Diana Jane Hill of Millsboro, Cynthia H. Baumer of Lewes and Michelle H. Souder of Milton; two sisters, Patricia Chopp of Harwood, Md., and Elizabeth H. Messick of Milford; and a granddaughter, Whitney Elizabeth Baumer of Lewes.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road and Del. 24, Long Neck, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Lorraine B. Malphrus, 82
DENTON, Md. - Lorraine B. Malphrus of Denton died of heart failure Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in her home. She was 82.
Mrs. Malphrus was born in Seattle, the daughter of the late John and Effel Magnuson.
She graduated from Seattle Pacific College, Seattle.
She was a career first-grade teacher and taught at Lake Forrest Park Elementary School, Seattle. In 1966 she moved to Annapolis. She taught at the Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School in Suitland, retiring in 1980 after 35 years of teaching. For the past year she lived near Denton with her son and daughter-in-law, Mark E. and Janet Malphrus.
Mrs. Malphrus was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Manley L. Malphrus, Dec. 26, 1986; and three brothers, John W. Magnuson, Wilbur Magnuson and Paul Magnuson.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, she is survived by a daughter, Marilee C. Simonds of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Mary Schulz of Edmonds, Wash.; and two granddaughters.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be 4 p.m. Thursday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Annapolis.
Terry J. Suenkel, 50
DOVER - Terry J. Suenkel of Dover of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 50.
Mr. Suenkel graduated summa cum laude from John Tyler College in Virginia in 1984.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and retired. He had played football for the Army.
Following military service, he worked 10 years for the state of Delaware in the Office of Information Services, where he was employed at the time of his death.
Mr. Suenkel had been working on obtaining his private pilot's license, and had only six hours of training left to complete. He enjoyed the arts, and loved to paint and draw. He also enjoyed carpentry and just making things. In addition, he enjoyed photography, golf, archery and watching his grandsons competing and winning in bicycle motocross Racing.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Suenkel of Dover; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tiffany and Matthew Kelty of Dover and Lisa Jakomas of Middletown; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Dorothy Suenkel and Tim and Sherry Suenkel, all of Wisconsins; a sister and brother-in law, Sandy and Bob Klabunbe of Wisconsin; and two grandchildren, Matthew John Kelty and Steven Michael Kelty, both of Dover.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Woodland 'Woody' Wilson, 77
DOVER - Woodland "Woody" Wilson of Dover died of cancer Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in his home. He was 77.
Mr. Wilson was born Dec. 6, 1921, to the late William Wilson and Addie Dize Wilson.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in northern France, Normandy, the Rhineland and Ardennes, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with six bronze battle stars.
He was a manager of J.F.W. Dorman in Baltimore for 36 years.
Mr. Wilson was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Dover.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Swift Wilson of Dover; a son, Woodland "Woody" Wilson of Columbia, Md.; a brother, Clarence Wilson of Crisfield, Md.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a niece, Vicky Hill of Salisbury, Md.
Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First Southern Baptist Church, Dover.
Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Charles A. Clifford, 83
DOVER - Charles A. Clifford of Dover died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. He was 83.
Mr. Clifford was born on Aug. 31, 1916, in Oxford, N.C., the son of the late S.W. and Annie Clifford.
He moved from North Carolina to New York to the South Seas and back again to New York, moving to Dover in 1965.
Mr. Clifford built hospitals and barracks during World War II.
He owned and operated his own business for 18 years on Long Island. He worked as a foreman for Joe Byler construction in Dover for 10 years, and built a few homes on his own, retiring in 1978.
Mr. Clifford was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Clifford, on Jan. 28, 1989; and five brothers, Malin, Randolph, Norman D., William T. and Clarence.
He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" Ann VanVessen of Sandtown and Joanie Stewart of Dover; a brother, John Clifford of Oxford, N.C.; five grandchildren, Meg Gravatt of Milford, Cara Grove of Harrington, Susan Kinnamon of Dover, Rob VanVessen of Sandtown and Kathy Scott of Charlestown, S.C.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Marydel.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where evening prayers will be held.

Josette Coverdale Fried
LEWES - Josette Coverdale Fried of Lewes and formerly of Seaford died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, in her home.
Mrs. Fried was born in Lewes, the daughter of the late Joseph and Alberta King Coverdale.
She was a homemaker, and worked in banking for Sussex Trust Company, Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, and at Seaford schools.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Lehne; and an aunt and uncle she lived with as a child, Hattie and Halton Schmierer.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Erwin H. "Buddy" Fried; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Shelly Grove Fried of St. Thomas, Pa.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri G. and Robert Benson of Salisbury, Md., and Janine F. and Dennis Nightingale of Ijamsville, Md.; a sister, Antonia Culver of Laurel; a brother, David Coverdale of Portland, Ore.; five granddaughters; and a cousin, Betty Schmierer of Lewes.
Service and burial will be private.
