Dorothy E. Nelson, 74
DOVER - Dorothy E. Nelson of Dover died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in her home. She was 74.
Ms. Nelson was born June 21, 1928, in Dover, daughter of the late Howard W. Sr. and Anna L. (Jensen) Moore.
She worked for General Foods/Kraft Foods, starting in the '60s and retiring in 1988.
She loved to bake and cook.
Ms. Nelson volunteered work at Luther Towers. She enjoyed the slots at Dover Downs.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara A. Stone of Dover and Deborah Brink of Lincoln; a brother, Howard W. Moore Jr. of Canterbury; five grandchildren, Vickie L. Ebaugh of Camden-Wyoming, Maria "Ria" Wiest of Viola, Gregory D. Polly and Anna C.W. Stone, both of Dover, and Erik C. Petty of Frederica; and three great-grandchild, Gabrielle and Felecia Petty and Bubbie Wiest.

Sister M. Ethelreda Privo, 94
RIDGELY, Md. - Sister M. Ethelreda Privo of Ridgely died of natural causes Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in St. Gertrude's Infirmary, Ridgely. She was 94.
Sister Privo was born June 30, 1908, in Wilmington, Del., daughter of the late Alexander and Pauline Zamkowska Privo.
She was a teacher.
Sister Privo entered the Benedictine Sisters Sept. 12, 1924. She pronounced her perpetual vows July 11, 1929, at St. Gertrude's Monastery, Ridgely, and celebrated her 75th Jubilee on Feb. 10, 2002.
She is survived by nieces and nephews; and by her Benedictine Sisters.
Mass of Christian burial will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Gertrude's Monastery, Ridgely, where friends may call one-half hour earlier, and also from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Burial will be Friday morning in St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Ridgely.

John Jackson Raley Sr., 83
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.- John Jackson Raley Sr. of Lawrenceville died, after a long illness, Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, in Duluth, Ga. He was 83.
Mr. Raley, formerly of Mechanicsville, Md., had lived for the last 16 years in Georgia.
Mr. Raley was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Morganza, Md., in St. Mary's County, son of the late George Lloyd Raley and Martha Russell Raley.
He graduated from Margaret Brent High School, Helen, Md., in 1936, and was awarded the Margaret Brent Scholarship Medal.
He served in the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps and attained the rank of technical sergeant during World War II and was the crew chief of a B-24 bomber in the European Theater while stationed in England, flying on many missions over Nazi-occupied Europe.
Mr. Raley had a lifelong career in building contracting and construction until his retirement, and built many notable landmarks and homes throughout Southern Maryland.
He enjoyed traveling, reading avidly, gardening and visiting his the farm of his nephew, Al Shugars, and Mr. Shugar's wife, Nora, in Gratis.
Mr. Raley was a member of American Legion Post 232, Snellville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph L. Raley, and a sister, Martha Lou Shugars.
He is survived by his loving companion and friend of the last 16 years, Grace Garrett of Lawrenceville; his children, Esther R. Redman of Annapolis, Md., John Jackson Raley Jr. of Valley Lee, Md., Charles B. Raley and Lawrence Ray Raley, both of Mechanicsville, Md., Elizabeth R. "Betsy" Norris of Annapolis, Md., Mary Irene "Mollie" Raley of Dover, Del., and Jackwelyn R. "Jackie" King of North East, Md.; his former wife of 45 years, Elizabeth B. Raley, of Mechanicsville; three brothers, George E. Raley, James M. Raley and Claude A. Raley; three sisters, Etoyle Sizemore, Agnes Cline and Doris Ann Downs; eight grandchildren, Carey Norris Donnelly, Jason Redman, Andrew Redman, Ryan Raley, Sarah Raley, Leanne Raley, David Raley and Thomas King; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Raley Redman.
Services were Saturday in Eternal Hills Funeral Home, Snellville, Ga.
Burial will be in the Cheltenham Veterans' Cemetery, Cheltenham, Md.

Robert Charles Ruth Jr., 31
MILFORD - Robert Charles Ruth Jr. of Milford died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Christiana Medical Center. He was 31.
Mr. Ruth was born in Wilmington, son of Robert C. Ruth Sr. of New Castle and Carlotta (Piunti) Stocks of Milford.
He was employed as an ironworker for Devon Construction Co. in North East, Md.
Mr. Ruth enjoyed drawing, fishing and crabbing.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, Ronald Stocks of Milford; a son, Matthew Ruth of New Castle; a sister, Betty Jo Ruth; and a stepbrother, Jason Stocks of Chesterfield, Va.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N. W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be held at the convenience to the family.
Steven D. Vincent, 41
MILFORD - Steven D. Vincent of Milford died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. He was 41.
Mr. Vincent was born in Milford, son of Albert L. and Betty M. Vincent of Harrington.
He worked for the Reichhold Chemical Co. for over 19 years, retiring this past June, as a chemical operator.
Mr. Vincent enjoyed the outdoors, and liked to hunt, fish and go crabbing. He also enjoyed NASCAR and cheered for his favorite driver, Terry Labonte. He was an avid trap shooter. In his youth, he was a two time junior champion representing the state of Delaware in the trap shooting nationals in Vandalia, Ohio. Mr. Vincent will be remembered as a loving father to his two daughters, and will be sadly missed by his family.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Albert H. and Cleora Vincent, and his maternal grandfather, Clarence Anthony.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah A. Vincent of Milford; two daughters, Stacie N. Vincent and Kelsey L. Vincent, both of Milford; a brother and sister-in-law, Ricky L. and Kimberly Vincent of Harrington; a niece, Emily Vincent of Harrington; a nephew, Collin Vincent of Harrington; his maternal grandmother, Phoebe Anthony of Harrington; his mother and father-in-law, Linda and Charles Lesser of Harrington; four aunts, Grace Jester of Harrington, Gayle Melvin of Sandtown, Sandra Wood of Felton, and Ellen Taylor of Farmington; and an uncle, Ronald Vincent of Harrington.

Jane Handy Ward, 79
PARSONSBURG, Md. - Jane Handy Ward of Parsonsburg died of multiple myeloma Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in her son's home. She was 79.
Mrs. Ward was born in Milford, daughter of the late Wallace Stuart and Frances Bowes Handy.
Mrs. Ward attended a Christian home fellowship in Pittsville. She was a devoted wife and mother and above all she was devoted to Jesus Christ. She has gone home to be with her Lord.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Marvel Ward, in 1997; a brother, Wallace Bowes Handy; and a sister, Frances West.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David V. and Anne Ward of Media, Pa. and Philip R. and Ann Ward of Parsonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Ward family home at 31775 Morris Leonard Road, Parsonsburg, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Velma M. Snowberger Graham, 98
MILFORD - Velma M. Snowberger Graham of Milford and formerly of Greenwood and Seaford, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. She was 98.
Mrs. Graham was born March 25, 1904, in Denton, Md., daughter of the late J. Thaddeus and Ida Mae Snowberger.
She graduated from Greenwood High School in 1923.
Mrs. Graham worked for the post office from 1923 to 1938. She also was a homemaker.
She lived in Greenwood for 65 years and was a resident of Seaford for 14 years. She most recently resided at Heritage at Milford, moving there in April 2002. She enjoyed crafts with friends.
Mrs. Graham was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Homemakers Club. She was also a member of the old Grace United Methodist Church, Greenwood, where she was active in the "Willing Workers Sunday school class," which was established in 1935. She served as president of the class in 1963. She attended the church until its closing. She then became a member of St. Johnstown U.M. Church, Greenwood.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Lawrence Graham in 1985; two sisters, Bessie Russell and Olive Goodley; and two brothers, Russell Snowberger and Ralph Snowberger.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ethel Graham of Milford; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mildred and Elmer Hamstead of Seaford and Betty Ann Berwick of Bear; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fleischauer Funeral Home, West Market Street, Greenwood, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery.

Robert 'Bob' Coppadge Jr., 69
GRIFFIN, Ga. - Robert "Bob" Coppadge Jr. of Griffin died after a lengthy illness Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 69.
Mr. Coppadge was born July 17, 1932, in Griffin, son of Robert Coppadge Sr. and the late MaryEmma Coppadge.
He graduated from Northeastern High School in Detroit and entered the U.S. Air Force at age 17. Later he continued his education at Delaware State College, where he majored in business administration and economics.
While in his first tour of duty in Ogden, Utah, he met his bride, Ruby Mae Lewis. They were united in holy matrimony on April 28, 1956. They would grow in love and raise four sons.
Mr. Coppadge served in the U.S. Air Force for more than two decades. He retired from the Air Force in 1971. He chose to retire in Dover, Del. He became active in the community through many organizations he belonged to, including Prince Hall Masonic Lodge No. 28, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Elks, VFW, American Legion and the Delaware Retirees Club.
In his spare time he enjoyed traveling with his family, cooking, sports, reading his Bible and being active with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and devoted wife of 45 years, he is survived by four sons, Daryl P. Coppadge of Voorhees, N.J., Joel V. Coppadge, and his wife, Arlene, of Wilmington, Del., Carl A. Coppadge, and his wife, Sonya, of Woodbridge, Va., and Paul A. Coppadge, and his wife, Charlene, of Coatesville, Pa.; his stepmother, Magaline Booker-Coppadge, of Detroit; sister Barbara Palmer and brother-in-law Dr. Joe Palmer of Detroit; a sister, Angie Thomas and family; two nephews, Joe Palmer Jr., and his wife, Deaitra, of Columbus, Ohio, and Robert "Pete" Palmer of Dover; two aunts, Ree of Detroit and Ruby of Chino Hills, Calif.; a cousin, Mary, and her sons, Mike, Gary and Steve, of Chino Hills, Otis Cauley Jr., who affectionately called him "Pop" Coppadge, and Leah Hemphill, to whom he was known as "Uncle Bob"; and seven grandchildren, twins Dejon and Aria Gee, Tammy Coppadge of Woodbridge, Va.; Alexandra and Joel V. Coppadge II of Wilmington and Sydney and Bryce Coppadge of Coatesville.
Services will be noon Friday at Mount Carmel Church of the Living God, Cecil and West streets, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial with military honor will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Betty Jane Datesman, 75
OCEAN VIEW - Betty Jane Datesman of Ocean View died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 75.
Mrs. Datesman was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Ocean City, Md., daughter of the late John Gibbs and Myra Birch Gibbs.
She retired in 1982 from the Medical Center of Delaware (now Christiana Medical Center) after 28 years as a registered nurse.
She was extremely devoted to her church.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert C. Datesman of Ocean View; a daughter, Linda Bakomenko, and her husband, Ray, of Hockessin; a sister, Myra Hairgrove of Dover; and two grandchildren, Amy and Michael Bakomenko of Hockessin.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1301 Philadelphia Avenue, Ocean City, Md.
Burial will be private.

George M. Ferguson, 74
WILMINGTON - George M. Ferguson of Wilmington died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 74.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Wilmington, son of the late Joseph O. and Norma (Woodward) Ferguson Sr.
He retired as a supervisor for the Historical Cultural Affairs.
He was an avid hunter and loved competitive shooting, traveling and his dogs.
Mr. Ferguson was a member of the American Legion, the Delaware Blues and VFW Post 5447, Hall-Burke.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Ferguson.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Joan M. (Whaley) Ferguson; a son, George C. Ferguson, and his wife, Debbie, of Newark; a daughter, Susan Ferguson Todd of Nottingham, England; a sister, Phyllis McMillan of Wilmington; a brother, Joseph G. Ferguson Jr. of Claymont; and two grandchildren.

John W. 'Jack' Henderson, 81
SEAFORD - John W. "Jack" Henderson of Seaford died peacefully early Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in the Seaford Center of Genesis Eldercare Retirement and Rehabilitation Center. His two daughters were with him. He was 81.
Mr. Henderson was born and reared in Wilmington.
He graduated from Wilmington High School.
Like many men of his generation, Mr. Henderson joined the U.S. Army in June 1943, and served as a pharmacy technician in the Pacific Theater. He also served in Germany during the Korean War.
Mr. Henderson worked for nearly 42 years for the DuPont Co., first in Wilmington and then in Seaford.
He met Marian Gwynn of Cambridge, Ohio, in 1946, and they married in 1947. In retirement they traveled all over the United States, and wintered in their Airstream trailer, first in Texas and later in Florida.
Mr. Henderson was a charter member of the Delmarva Unit of the Wally Byam Caravan Club, International, serving as president of the unit, and in the 1970s as chairman of the board that established Port Del-Mar-Va Inc. Airstream Trailer Park. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing and were members of Seaford's Let's Dance Club. He had a rich bass voice. While in Wilmington he sang in the DuPont Chorus, and in Seaford he was a member of the choir at St. John's United Methodist Church, and sang barbershop harmony with Seaford's Chorus of the Nanticoke. He became a Master Mason member of Lafayette Lodge No. 14, AF&AM, in Wilmington, in 1949.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, Marian G. Henderson, he is survived by two daughters, A. Gwynn Henderson of Lexington, Ky., and Jacki R. Henderson of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Frank B. Henderson Jr. of Wilmington; a niece, Linda Henderson Price of Wilmington; and a nephew, Paul F. Henderson of Wilmington.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church, Pine and Poplar streets in Seaford.

Edward E. Hurd, 78
CLAYTON - Edward E. Hurd of Clayton died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, in Country Rest Home, Greenwood. He was 78.
Mr. Hurd was born April 16, 1923, son of the late Fletcher C. and LuLu L. Hurd.
He was a 1941 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna.
Mr. Hurd was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.
He was manager of the Southern States Smyrna-Clayton Co-op for 44 years, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Hurd was a life member of VFW Post 8801, Clayton, a member and past president of the Clayton Lions Club and a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fletcher Hurd, Earl Hurd, Herbert Hurd and Roland Hurd; and seven sisters, Alda Robbins, Nellie Burke, Helen Solloway, Margaret Coyle, Lillian Ivory, Rosa Darrell and Agnes Warren.
He is survived by his wife, Betty B. Hurd of Clayton; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Kevin Wilson of Clayton; a sister, Lucille Horsey of Smyrna; and two granddaughters, Ashley Wilson and Alison Wilson, both of Clayton.

Harlan L. 'Chick' Jones Jr., 58
BRIDGEVILLE - Harlan L. "Chick" Jones Jr. died peacefully after a battle with cancer Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in the Harrison House of Georgetown. He was 58.
Mr. Jones was born in Bridgeville, son of the late Harlan L. Jones Sr. and S. Elizabeth Adams.
He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956.
Mr. Jones retired in 1995 after 30 years with the Delaware Department of Transportation in Georgetown, where he was a supervisor in the machine division.
He is survived by a son, Harlan L. Jones II of Salisbury, Md.; two stepsons, Robert L. Thomas and R. Richard Thomas, both of Bridgeville; and a dearly devoted friend, Sally Garris of Seaford.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today in Bridgeville Cemetery.
Glennis Quinteen Jones-Marcelin, 52
MILFORD - Glennis Quinteen Jones-Marcelin of Milford, formerly of Farmville, N.C., on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 52.
Mrs. Marcelin was born Jan. 1, 1949, daughter of the late Cleatrice Jones and James Barnes.
She attended elementary school in Ellendale. She graduated from William C. Jason High School, and furthered her education at Dover Cosmetology, where she received her cosmetology degree.
Mrs. Marcelin was a member of Temple of Faith Pentecostal Church, Ellendale, where she attended until her health failed. She rededicated her life back to Christ on June 24, holding on to the only thing she said she could, "When I See Jesus Amen."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Piper.
She is survived by her husband, Jean Marcelin; three daughters, Stephanie Jones of Milford, Tonya Jones of Dorchester, Mass., and Constance Keech of Farmville N.C.; a son, and daughter-in-law, Troy and Dawn Jones of Wilmington; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Victoria Brewington of Milford; a brother-in-law, Howard Piper of Milford; three uncles, William Barnes, Otis Barnes, both of Farmville, N.C., and Marion Barnes of New York; four aunts, Shirley Barnes, Hales Barnes, Annie Moye Barnes and Bernice Davis, all of Farmville; a beloved cousin, Carolyn Jean Barnes of Farmville; 10 grandchildren, Cordrin and Tyris Jones, both of Milford, Troy Jr. and Denzil of Wilmington, Jazzmen, Shontay, William "Man-Man", Precious and A-Yantas, all of Dorchester, Mass., and Arron of Farmville, N. Antoinette Marie Kovats 'Ann' Kemp, 70
HARRINGTON - Antoinette Marie Kovats "Ann" Kemp of Harrington died after a lengthy illness Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in her home. She was 70.
Mrs. Kemp was born in New York City.
She and her husband owned and operated a small grocery store near Killens Pond for three years, and she worked at the Harrington Journal office for several years. She was a den mother for Pack 76 for about eight years.
She enjoyed gardening and crafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis H. Kemp, in 1998.
She is survived by three sons, Louis W. Kemp of Oregon City, Ore., Michael J. Kemp of Milford and Timothy K. Kemp of Harrington; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services and burial will be private.

MILLSBORO - Gladys E. LeKites of Millsboro died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in Berlin Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Berlin, Md.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. LeKites, in 1975; and a brother, Carl Lewis.
She is survived by a two brothers, Minos Garrison Lewis of Dagsboro and Orlando Lewis of Roxanna; two sisters, Harriet Rayne of Millsboro and Catherine Northam of Selbyville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roxana Wesleyan Church, with Pastor Kenneth Figgs and the Rev. Atwood Berry officiating.
Burial will be in Roxana Cemetery.
