Fredy O. Mahnke, 70
SMYRNA - Fredy O. Mahnke of Smyrna died of complications of a stroke Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Christiana Hospital of Christiana Care, Newark. He was 70.
Mr. Mahnke was born July 10, 1932, in Berlin, Germany, son of the late Kurt and Martha Schattschneider Mahnke.
He worked as a licensed plumber and was the former owner of the Sudlersville (Md.) Frozen Meat Locker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Peter Mahnke.
He is survived by his companion, Clara Rogers; two sisters, Christel Mahnke and Erica Mikula, both of Germany; two nephews, Ralf and Bernd Mikula, both of Germany; a niece, Silke Plottke, also of Germany; a very special "Princess," Dajuna Rogers; and his friends, Pete, Charlie, Bob and Skip.
Services and burial will be at a later date.

David Lloyd McDonald, 70
DOVER - David Lloyd McDonald of Dover died of complications of cancer Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in the home of his caregiver, Linda Goodnight, with whom he lived, in Dover. He was 70.
Mr. McDonald was born May 19, 1932, in Lancaster, Pa.
He worked in construction.
Mr. McDonald was a dedicated volunteer at Silver Lake Center, and was a member of the Felton Community Fire Co.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Louise.
In addition to his caregiver, he is survived by a son, Mark McDonald of Clayton; two granddaughters, Sharon Burton of Hartly and Danielle McDonald of Smyrna; a lifelong friend, Mildred Steele of Felton; his "extended family," his caregiver's children, Jason Goodnight and Makenna Goodnight, and daughter-in-law, Jen Goodnight, all of Dover; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover.
Burial will be private.

Harris J. Smack, 77
MILFORD - Harris J. Smack of Milford died of natural causes Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Christiana Hospital of Christiana Care, Newark. He was 77.
Mr. Smack was born July 2, 1925, in Berlin, Md., son of the late James D. and Nora Shockley Smack.
He was employed with the state of Delaware as superintendent of Killens Pond State Park near Felton. The state purchased the land in 1966, and he was a major influence on its development and continued popularity. He retired in 1987.
He enjoyed gardening and travel.
Mr. Smack was a member of the Milford Church of the Nazarene, the Milford Ruritan Club and the AARP.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow Smack; and a sister, Regina Tingle.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gay N. Smack; two daughters; Connie J. Dernberger of Milford and Linda A. Caccamo of Middletown; and a granddaughter, Heather Dernberger.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford.
Services will be noon Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, North Walnut Street, Milford.

Diane States, 47
HENDERSON, Md. - Diane States of Henderson died of respiratory failure Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton. She was 47.
Ms. States was born in Dover, Del., daughter of J. Henry States Jr. of Henderson and the late Pearla Mae States.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Wayne States, in 1968.
In addition to her father, she is survived by a daughter, Crystal L. Porter of Henderson; a son, Kevin B. Porter of Greensboro; a brother, Jerry States of Henderson; a half-sister, Shirley Taylor of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; a granddaughter, Abigail Leigh Porter; her longtime companion, Charles Thompson of Henderson; and her dog, Brandy.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St. in Denton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Evangeline B. Truitt, 74
LAUREL - Evangeline B. Truitt of Laurel died of complications of cancer Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md. She was 74.
Mrs. Truitt was born in Mardela Springs, Md., daughter of the late Soron and Bertha Smith Bennett.
She owned and operated Truitt's Beauty Shop in Laurel for about 45 years, where she met many wonderful friends.
She loved to travel. She and her husband visited almost every state while traveling in their motor home that she loved. Her favorite destination was Skyline Drive. She will be remembered as a loving and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Mrs. Truitt was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel, where she was always very active with the United Methodist Women group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph C. Bennett; and a sister, Margaret Bell.
She is survived by her husband of almost 55 years, Hollis L. Truitt; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Bruce W. and Barbara Truitt of Wyoming and Terry L. and Wava Truitt of Laurel; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda T. and Larry Hardesty of Laurel; five grandchildren, Karen L. Watson, Brian L. Truitt, Stephanie M. Truitt, Brett M. Truitt and Brittanie L. Truitt; a great-grandson, Jared Lee Watson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Short Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.

Freda R. Vonville, 72
MILFORD - Freda R. Vonville of Milford died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 72.
Mrs. Vonville was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Minden, W.Va., daughter of the late Charles and Louvenia (Hamilton) Reece.
She was a waitress and cook for more than 30 years in the Wilmington and Dover areas. She retired in 1992. She then worked as a nurse's aide. She enjoyed working with the disabled.
Mrs. Vonville also enjoyed county music, bingo and soap operas.
She is survived by her husband, Philip L. Vonville Sr. of Milford; eight daughters, Sheila Tharp and Judy Lester, both of Lincoln, Margnet Needles of Felton, June Biddle, Paula Bollman and Donna Mitchell, all of Dover, Linda Vonville of McAllen, Texas, and Maureen Messina of Smyrna; four sons, Wayne Tompkins of Camden-Wyoming, Joseph Tompkins of Dover, Paul Tompkins of Felton and Philip Vonville Jr. of Harrington; 31 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.
Remembrance of life services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Garfield Robert Wilkinson, 82
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Garfield Robert Wilkinson of Springdale, and formerly of Hartly, Del., died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in his home. He was 82.
Mr. Wilkinson was born March 10, 1920, in Laurel, Del., son of the late Russell James and Sadie Elliott Wilkinson.
He was a World War II veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army. His contributions to the Allied campaign were numerous, and he was recognized with distinction for his participation in three major campaigns: Normandy, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge. As a staff sergeant in the 82nd Airborne, he received the highest combat infantry recognition, the Combat Infantry Badge. He also received the American Theater Service Medal, French and Belgian Service Ribbons, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Bronze Arrowhead Foraguerre and Degree of Knight 4th Class. He was in the active reserves and was recalled as an instructor during the Korean War.
As a civilian, he was also a developer and in land sales.
Mr. Wilkinson was an active member of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment Association, a life member of VFW Post 194, where he was post chaplain from 1994 to 1996, and a member of the American Land Developers Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley F. Martin Wilkinson, in 2001.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Garfield R. Wilkinson II, and his fiancée, Carolyn Sliger, both of Lake Ridge, Va., and Gary and Lori Wilkinson of Sanford, N.C.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Warren and Martha Breeden of Syria, Va.; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Sandra and Aubrey Tarman of Springfield, Va., Theresa Harward of Rolesville, N.C., and Dana and Dwayne Pearson of Springdale; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Burial with full military honors will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Circle of Life Hospice, 610 E. Emma, Springdale, AR 72764; or to Camp Blanding Museum and Historical Associates, Route 1, Box 465, Camp Blanding, Starke, FL 32091-9703.

Wilmer Fell Davis Jr., 67
FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Wilmer Fell Davis Jr. of Federalsburg died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 67.
Mr. Davis was born June 15, 1936, in Baltimore, son of the late Wilmer Fell and Maud Ford Davis.
He received his elementary education at Federalsburg Elementary School and graduated from St. Andrew's School, Townsend, Del., in 1954, and from Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pa., in 1958.
In December 1959, he joined the U.S Army Reserves Battery "A" 7th Holister Battilion 6th Artillery 79th Infantry Division of Seaford, Del., and served on active duty from Feb. 29, 1960, to Aug. 29, 1960, at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
He returned to Federalsburg to work for his father at W. Fell Davis Egg & Feed Co. until June 1964, when he joined Prudential Insurance Co., where he retired with 32 years of service in June 1996. Since his retirement he was a courier for Provident State Bank. While at Prudential he was a LUTCF and was a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, the Delmarva Life Underwriters Association, for which he was president from 1974 to 1975. Prior to moving back to Federalsburg in 1977, he and his family had made their homes in Dover, Del., and in Salisbury, where he was actively involved in many community affairs.
Mr. Davis was a member of Union United Methodist Church, Federalsburg, and a member and past president of Idlewild Ruritan Club, a member of Nanticoke Lodge 172 A.F. & A.M. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Men's Auxiliary of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5246, and a former member and past president of the Caroline Country Club. He was a member and past president of Hillcrest Cemetery, President of the L.D. Club, and a member and treasurer of the Black Water Honga Game Dinner.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Kay (Pusey) Davis, whom he married Nov. 17, 1962; a son, Wilmer Fell "Chip" Davis III of Federalsburg; two daughters, Renee Davis Smith and her husband Dean of Federalsburg, and Laura Davis Walters and her husband Craig of Preston; three grandchildren, Mitchell Davis Smith, Mallory Renee' Smith of Federalsburg and Chandler Alan Walters of Preston; a sister, Alice Jane Davis Jenkins and her husband Paul of Pittsburgh; and three nephews, Paul Davis Jenkins of Chicago, Edward Rieber Jenkins of Andover, Mass., and Walter Ford Jenkins of Pittsburgh.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Union United Methodist Church, 301 N. Main St., Federalsburg. The Rev. David Heistand and the Rev. Reginald Jackson will officiate.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Federalsburg.

Joseph A. Fournier Jr., 68
VIOLA - Joseph A. Fournier Jr. of Viola died Friday, June 4, 2004, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 68.
Mr. Fournier was born June 5, 1935, in Franklin, N.H., son of the late Isabelle I. Bolduc Fournier and Joseph A. Fournier Sr.
He was a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1973. He had a great love for the Air Force, which he continued to share with his dedication to the Air Mobility Command Museum at the Dover Air Force Base.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the Price Organization of Dover, beginning with Diamond Motor Sports and later with Price Honda as a mechanic technician, and later as a parts technician when he retired in 1997.
Besides his dedication to the Air Museum, his hobbies included auto and home repair. He also enjoyed collecting HO model trains.
Mr. Fournier will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, enjoying good times spent with family and his many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years and eight months, Barbara Fournier; two daughters, Kathy Lane and her husband Steve of Middletown, and Lori Green and her husband David of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Joseph A. Fournier III of Dover; a brother, Ronald Fournier of South Windsor, Conn.; and five grandchildren, Branden Steeves of Viola, Stephen Lane and Daniel Lane, both of Middletown, Megan Steeves of Tucson and Tyler Fournier of Dover.
Services will be noon Wednesday in Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South,100 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Helen W. Givens, 89
MILFORD - Helen W. Givens of Milford died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Harrison House, Georgetown. She was 89.
Mrs. Givens was born May 28, 1915, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Walter and Elsie (Watson) Biggs.
She was a longtime resident of Milford.
Mrs. Givens was a member of Milford Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Givens, in 1990; and her brother, Walter Biggs.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Theda Biggs of Milford; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Milford Church of God, 500 N. Walnut St., Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford.

Allen L. Kapp, 83
DOVER - Allen L. Kapp of Dover died Friday, June 4, 2004, in his home. He was 83.
Mr. Kapp was born in Palmyra, Pa., son of Levi Kapp and the late Myrtle Deeter Kapp.
He was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He had served as a jet engine mechanic and had retired from duty as a chief master sergeant in 1970.
Upon his retirement from the military, he had been employed with the Delaware Historical and Cultural Affairs Department until his full retirement in 1986.
A dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he spent his quieter times involving himself with gardening, stamp collecting and auto mechanics.
Mr. Kapp was active in community affairs. He had served as a Republican committeeman in the 5th and 27th District, and was a long-term member of Masonry, the Air Force Sergeants Association, and the Dover Modern Maturity Center.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Wilson Kapp, in 2002; and a brother, Arthur Budd Kapp.
In addition to his father, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Mark Keister of Dover; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Charles and Mary Wells of Tiller, Ark., Allen and Sue Kapp of Lake-in-the-Hills, Ill., Arthur and Judi Kapp of Glendale, Ariz., and Robert Kapp of Dover; three sisters, Doris Hiepler of Manheim, Pa., Lucille Showers of New Cumberland, Pa., and Jean Baker of Palmyra; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be private in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, 100 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 1973 Bay Road, Milford, DE 19963.

Isadore J. 'Izzy' Matarese, 79
SMYRNA - Isadore J. "Izzy" Matarese of Smyrna died Friday, June 4, 2004. He was 79.
Mr. Matarese was born May 7, 1925, in Burlington, N.J.
He and his brothers owned and operated United Aero Products, a manufacturing plant in New Jersey. Later, he and his wife owned and operated M&M Hunting Lodge in Smyrna, until their retirement in 1992.
Some of his pleasures in life were gardening, cooking and spending time with his family.
As a conservationist, Mr. Matarese elected to sell his farm to the state of Delaware, where it became part of the Woodland Beach Wildlife Refuge.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Philomena D. Matarese; a son and his wife, Anthony I. and Donna Matarese of Pennsville, N.J.; two daughters, Lorraine Matarese of Smyrna and Linda Graham of Middletown; three brothers, Frank, Joseph and James Matarese; three sisters, Angeline Frappoli, Mary DeFlece, and Josephine Spoltore; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Mass of Christian burial will be offered noon Tuesday in St. Polycarp Catholic Church, Ransom Lane and South streets, Smyrna.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Minerva L. Redden, 88
RIDGELY, Md. - Minerva L. Redden of Ridgely died Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 88.
Mrs. Redden was born Aug. 11, 1915, in Wye Mills, daughter of the late John Wesley Stubbs and Emma Louise Mullikin Stubbs.
She had been a line worker at Saulsbury Brothers in Ridgely, retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Redden was a member of the Church of God in Easton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, J. Milton "Honey" Redden, March 21, 1993; and a sister, Hilda Smith.
She is survived by three sisters, Mildred Chaplain of Preston, Pearl Sullivan of Salisbury and Eva Kornrumpf of Dover, Del.; a brother, William H. Dyott of Harmony; four grandchildren, Joshua B. Schultz and Jason B. Schultz, both of Ridgely, and Raven N. Bishop and Steele B. Bishop, both of Florida; a nephew, David L. Smith Jr. of Church Hill; and a niece, Wanda Bishop of Ridgely.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Cathy M. Tucker, 39
WARWICK, Md. - Cathy M. Tucker of Warwick died suddenly Thursday, June 3, 2004, in her home. She was 39.
Mrs. Tucker graduated from St. Elizabeth's in 1982.
She was employed by Heritage Propane as an office manager. She enjoyed boating and fishing with her family. Her absence from their lives will be greatly felt.
She is survived by her loving husband, Randy; her devoted children, Joshua and Cory; her mother, Mary Williams of Middletown; her father, Kenneth Dykes of Tennessee; a sister, Debra Hanna of Smyrna, Del.; a brother, Kenneth Dykes of Delaware City, Del.; three nephews; a niece; and several cousins.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Wards Hill Baptist Church, Warwick.
Burial will follow in Townsend Cemetery, Townsend, Del.

John W. 'Dick' Walls Sr., 77
MILFORD - John W. "Dick" Walls Sr. of Milford died Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 77.
Mr. Walls was born in Chester, Pa., son of the late William Riley and Anna (Dulin) Walls.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II who served as a paratrooper in the Pacific Theatre, and was with the first troops to occupy Japan after the signing of the peace treaty.
He owned and operated Dick's Atlantic on Washington Street in Milford and later Walls Service Center on Northeast Front Street in Milford for 30 years before retiring in 1986.
Mr. Walls enjoyed spending winters in North Fort Myers, Fla., socializing with his friends and playing pool.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 41 years, Bessie (Jones) Walls, in 1990.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Dorothy L. (Howard) Walls; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. Jr. and Donna F. Walls of Slaughter Beach; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Carl Schulze of Greenwood; two stepsons, Robert Taylor of Little River, S.C., and Daniel Taylor of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Louis Walls of Milford; a sister, Patricia Pleasonton of Milford; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford.
