Oakland C. Remus, 82
DOVER - Oakland C. Remus, of Dover, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 82.
Mr. Remus was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Felton, son of the late Earl and Evelyn Sharp Remus.
Mr. Remus served in the U.S. Army from 1935, when he joined the Delaware National Guard. He was later activated into Army service during World War II until 1945, with duties that included mess sergeant, first sergeant and personnel sergeant major. He served in Bora Bora, New Hebrides, Guadalcanal (where he landed with the 1st Marine Division), Mono Island, New Guinea, and Shortland Islands. He was awarded a Commendation for Exceptionally Meritorious Conduct.
Mr. Remus was a retired heavy equipment operator.
Mr. Remus was a pillar of the Woodside United Methodist Church for 40 years, a member of the Order of St. Barnabas, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Operating Engineers Local 542 and a past member of the Caesar Rodney Ruritan Club.
He loved gardening, raising his donkeys and collecting. He was a beloved husband, father and friend.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Remus, Fred Remus and Edmond Remus; and three sisters, Ora Darling, Bertha Clark and Verna Russ.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Gloria Remus; five stepchildren, Maryann Bryant and her husband, Ralph, of Woodside, Gary Madden and his wife, Lorraine, of Woodside, Bruce Madden and his wife, Mary, of Texas, Nora Childers and her husband, Steve, of Woodside, and Gregory Madden and his wife, Joan, of Hartly; a sister, Jesse Englehart, of Springfield, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Sue Remus, of Dover; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. The Revs. John Hinkle and Ed Kuhling will be officiating.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Woodside United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 42, Woodside, DE 19980, or Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
James D. Schirling, 61
DOVER - James D. Schirling, of Dover, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 61.
Mr. Schirling was born April 17, 1941, in Elkton, Md., son of the late Leonard E. and Helen Tarbutton Cole.
He worked as an "A operator" for Standard Chlorine, formerly of Delaware City, before retirement.
Mr. Schirling's favorite hobby was fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Truitt Schirling in 1982 and a sister, Anna Bonneville.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Michael Hunter, of Oahu, Hawaii; three daughters, Allyson Hunter of Texas, Dottie Hunter of Boston and Michelle Hopper of Smyrna; three sisters, Helen Thompson and Jean Guessford, both of Smyrna, and Darlene Burris, of Townsend; and three grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna.

Lillian Theresa Greenwood Stewart, 55
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Lillian Theresa Greenwood Stewart, of San Jose, Calif., died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in her father's home. She was 55. She was a native of Chestertown, Md.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Viola Miller Burrow, on Feb. 2.
She is survived by her father, Robert W. Burrow, of Lewisbrug, Tenn.; her companion of 13 years, William L. Ervin, of San Jose; a daughter, Michelle Stewart, of Jamestown, N.D.; a sister, Brenda Sharon Rose, of Chestertown; and three grandchildren, Cassy, Candice and Michael Stewart.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech,118 W. Cross St.., Galena.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.
John R. 'Jack' Alfree Sr., 63
GALENA, Md. - John R. "Jack" Alfree Sr. of Galena died suddenly Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 63.
Mr. Alfree was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Wilmington, Del., son of the late Jehu and Alice Boyles Alfree.
At age 18, he moved to Galena and began his continuous 45-year employment with Kent Oil, now Alger Oil, in the delivery and dispatch of home heating oil.
He loved country line dancing, crabbing and hunting.
Mr. Alfree was a 45-year member of the Galena Volunteer Fire Co., holding numerous positions, including 17 years as ambulance captain and two years as fire chief. He also was a member of the Retired Chiefs Association.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joanne Moffett Alfree; a son, John "J.R." Alfree Jr. of South Pasadena, Calif.; two daughters, Terri Coleman of Wilmington and Betsy Kelly of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; two grandchildren, Lauren and Kristen Hessey of Hilton Head; and five siblings, Audrey Price of Galena, Annie Bush and Harry Alfree, both of Bear, Del., a twin brother, Jim Alfree of Galena, and Bill Alfree of Clayton.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Galena Funeral home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Galena Cemetery.
In honor of past chief Alfree, the family suggests memorials may be offered to the Galena Ambulance Fund, c/o the funeral home.
Emma Mary Atkins, 86
DAGSBORO - Emma Mary Atkins a native of Dagsboro, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Green Valley Terrace Nursing Home, Millsboro. She was 86.
Mrs. Atkins was born in Millsboro, daughter of the late John P. Hitchens and Minnie Hudson Hitchens.
She operated a fruit stand and sold Christmas wreaths on U.S. 113 outside Dagsboro near her home. She also was formerly employed at the National Cash Register plant in Millsboro, where she was a production line worker.
Mrs. Atkins was a member of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the church's United Methodist Women's WSCS.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Atkins, in 1981.
She is survived by two daughters, Joyce A. Long of Frankford and Debra S. Brandner of Millsboro; three sons, Thomas M. Atkins and Harvey M. Atkins, both of Millsboro, and Jacob M. Atkins of Frankford; a brother, William Hitchens of Millsboro; three sisters, Dollie Lathbury of Clarksville, Aleine Watson of Berlin, Md., and Bertie Dyson of Smyrna; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. Phyllis Walton will officiate.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery in Millsboro.
Mildred Lamb Black, 91
FELTON - Mildred Lamb Black of Felton died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Silver Lake Nursing Home, Dover. She was 91.
Mrs. Black was born May 27, 1991, in Sussex County, daughter of the late John and Laura Lamb.
She attended school in Viola.
She was a domestic worker. She owned and operated a school bus for the Caesar Rodney School District.
Mrs. Black attended Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church, Dover. She sang in the choir. She also was the community leader and a deaconess.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Black; three brothers, Chester, Harold and Calvin Lamb; and a sister, Claudia Gibbs.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Chester and Agnes Lamb and Samuel and Frances Lamb of Dover; three sisters, Estella Smith of Felton, Ethel Moore and Edna Walcot, both of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Annabelle Lamb; two granddaughters and their spouses, Doris and John Ruff and Florence and James Kilby; six great-grandchildren; and five great-step-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Wednesday in 1st Seven Day Adventist Church, Wyoming and New Burton roads, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Gibbs Memorial Gardens, Camden.

James W. Buffkin, 57
HARRINGTON - James W. Buffkin of Harrington died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, in Bayhealth/Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 57.
Mr. Buffkin was born in Milford.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He worked for Playtex Apparel in Dover for 33 years.
Mr. Buffkin was a member of Frederica Volunteer Fire Co. and Murderkill Lions Club.
He is survived by his mother, Harriett Maloney Buffkin of Harrington; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Paul Schreppler of Magnolia; and a niece, Lisa, and her husband, Neal Donaldson, of Newark.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.
