Dorothy Madge Minor, 77
DOVER - Dorothy Madge Minor of Dover, and formerly of Blackwater, Va., died Friday, March 9, 2001, in Capitol Nursing Home, Dover. She was 77.
Ms. Minor was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Blackwater, daughter of the late Ezra and Maggie (Neal) Burke.
She was a certified nurse's aide and a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Paul Wayne Minor in 1954 and Carl Edward Minor in 1960.
She is survived by three sons, Ray Minor of Indianapolis and Larry Minor and Fred Minor, both of Dover; seven daughters, Marie Vance of Unicoi, Tenn., Phyllis Stewart and Elizabeth Rocha, both of Golt, Calif., Sue Tinnel and Melissa McNary, both of Dover, Barbara Alexander of Seattle and Carol Sheilds of Greenwood, Neb.; three brothers, Marshall Burke of Kingsport, Tenn., Amos Burke of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Paul Burke of Dover; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Trader Funeral Home, Dover.
Remembrance service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ken Brown officiating.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
Lavessa H. Mitchell, 66
SALISBURY, Md. - Lavessa H. Mitchell of Salisbury, formerly of Frankford, Del., died of a heart attack Saturday, March 10, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, She was 66.
Mrs. Mitchell was a 1952 graduate of John M. Clayton High School and a 1955 graduate of the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a registered nurse, working 15 years at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where she was head nurse in the emergency room for 10 of those years, and later, as a school nurse for Wicomico County schools until retiring last year. She continued as a substitute nurse until her death.
Mrs. Mitchell was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Church's Naomi Circle in Salisbury.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lester R. Hudson, in 1999.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, S. Burton Mitchell; her mother, Gertrude L. Hudson of Frankford; four children, Kimberly M. Blake of Dagsboro, Del., Kevin B. Mitchell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Keith R. Mitchell and Kelly M. O'Malley, both of Crownsville; a brother, Bruce L. Hudson of Wilmington, Del.; a sister, Sandra H. Bell of Knoxville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Holly Weaver, Kayla Blake, Paige Mitchell, Connor O'Malley and Kennedy O'Malley.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Burial will be in Carey's Cemetery, Frankford.

Agnes M. Meyer Nielsen, 67
ELLENDALE - Agnes M. Meyer Nielsen of Ellendale died Saturday, March 10, 2001, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 67.
Mrs. Nielsen was a prep cook in food service for many years, most recently for Bonanza.
She enjoyed reading and doing crafts.
Mrs. Nielsen attended St. John's Catholic Church in Milford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Nielsen, in 1998.
She is survived by five daughters, Elaine Cox of Anchorage, Alaska, Donna Kaser of Lewes, Karen Kimak and Connie DelGiudice, both of Pequannock, N.J., and Cheryl Davis of Salisbury, Md.; several stepchildren; two sisters, Marie Roberts of Pequannock and Geraldine Parcaro of Lincoln Park, N.J.; a brother, Gerard Meyer of Butler, N.J.; eight grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today and two hours prior to the service at Short Funeral Services Inc., 416 Federal Street, Milton.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Paul F. Sharpley, 59
CLAYTON - Paul F. Sharpley, of Clayton, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 59.
Mr. Sharpley was born Jan. 3, 1942, in Wilmington, son of the late Paul and Mary Bader Sharpley.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Sharpley worked for the Bureau of Fire for the City of Wilmington, and later became an emergency medical technician for Professional Ambulance Service, formerly of Dover. He later owned and operated Metal Recyclers out of his home in Clayton.
He was an avid camper and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Sharpley was a member of the David C. Harrison Post 14 of the American Legion in Smyrna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James E. Sharpley.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Zieber Sharpley; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen A. and Glen Divel of Houston and Kim P. and Wayne Case of Clayton; a brother, Joseph "Jody" Sharpley of Wilmington; a sister, Mary Lou Houghton of Wilmington; and two grandchildren, Paul Divel and Christopher Divel, both of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Gloria T. Short, 75
MILTON - Gloria T. Short of Milton died Saturday, March 10, 2001, in Milford Center, Milford. She was 75.
Mrs. Short was born in Dover, daughter of the late Millard and Marie Faucett Tigner.
She and her husband owned and operated Short Funeral Home in Milton for 35 years, retiring in 1988.
Mrs. Short was a member of the Milton Century Club, Georgetown Chapter 9 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 20 and Rebekah Lodge 24 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Mano.
She is survived by her husband, William M. Short Sr.; two sons, William M. Short Jr. of Delmar and George M. Short of Milton; two daughters, Bonnie Short Ritter and Patricia Short Caras, both of Milton; a sister, Millicent Horvath of Dover; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

R. Walton 'Buzzy' Smith, 68
CHESWOLD - R. Walton "Buzzy" Smith of Cheswold died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in his home. He was 68.
Mr. Smith was born June 15, 1932, son of the late Rhesa W. Smith Sr. and Ada E. Downes Smith.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.
He was a supervisor for Reichhold Chemical Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1992. Since his retirement, he had worked as an independent contractor for Independent Couriers until 2000.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Smyrna Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, where he served as an elder.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol L. Smith; five children, Rhesa Lea Townley of Dover, Randall Walton Smith and Donald William Smith, both of Fort Worth, Texas, Kristal Lynn Taylor of Marydel, Md., and Michele Denise Sherman of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Josephine L. Hill of Smyrna, Patricia A. Thorpe of Hartly and Mary Emma Short of Harrington; 11 stepbrothers and stepsisters; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Smyrna Kingdom Hall, Elm Street, Smyrna.

Ashley Joseph Stairs III
MILLINGTON, Md. - Ashley Joseph Stairs III of Milllington died Saturday, March 10, 2001, from injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle accident, at the scene of the accident on Woodard Road. He was 18.
Mr. Stairs was born Dec. 21, 1982, in Baltimore, the son of Betty Ann Austin of Millington and the late Ashley Joseph Stairs Jr.
He attended Queen Anne's County High School, where he was involved in football and lacrosse.
Mr. Stairs also enjoyed golfing, fishing and concerts. He had a special love of music, which he shared with his mother. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his stepbrother, Craig.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Craig W. Austin of Millington; a sister, Lesley Gayle Stairs of Millington; a stepsister, Sondra K. Austin, and a stepbrother, Craig T. Austin, both of Media, Pa.; maternal grandmother, Katherine G. Watkins of Centreville; paternal grandfather, Ashley Joseph Stairs Sr. of Baltimore; paternal grandmother, Jeanette Emerson of Winte Haven, Fla.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and his girlfriend, Stacy Cox.
Relatives and friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 West Cypress St., Millington.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Church Hill Cemetery.
