Bertha E. Roach, 68
GEORGETOWN - Bertha E. Roach of Georgetown died after a long illness Friday, March 7, 2003, in her home. She was 68.
Mrs. Roach attended the Richard Allen and W.C. Jason Schools.
She retired from the United States Department of Agriculture in June 2000.
Mrs. Roach was a member of the Flames of Fire Church in Georgetown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira D. Roach Sr.; and her parents, James and Catherine Short.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Ira D. Jr. and Carolyn Roach of Georgetown and Frank E. Sr. and Tanya Roach of Bridgeville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda A. and Lionel Shockley of Lincoln, and Valerie J. Roach of Georgetown; a stepson and his wife, Harry and Norma Crock-ett of Salisbury, Md.; a step-daughter, Janet Cannon of Wilmington; two sisters, Edith Williams and Vir-ginia Ayers both of Greenwood; four sisters-in-law, Mary Jones of Bridgeville, Evelyn Matthews of Phila-delphia, Catherine Brewington of Greenwood and Lottie Roach of Seaford; three brothers-in-law, Kermit Beckwith of Georgetown, Carl Matthews of Philadelphia, and Nelson Brewington of Greenwood; a god-daughter, Nancy Felix of Georgetown; 10 grandchildren, two adopted grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.,
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Flames of Fire Church, Georgetown.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in St. John's Baptist Church, Mount Joy, near Millsboro.
Burial will be in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Georgetown.

Marie C. Short, 84
DOVER - Marie C. Short of Dover died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in her home surrounded by her family and friends. She was 84.
Mrs. Short was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Concordville, Pa., daughter of the late Rupert and Marian (Nichols) Cornog.
She was a loving and caring mother.
Mrs. Short was a past member of the Little Creek United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean E. Short of Dover; her companion and caregiver, Marie Virdin of Dover; and many nieces and nephews.
Remembrance services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.
Leroy 'Sonny' Sudler Sr.
DOVER - Leroy "Sonny" Sudler Sr. died after a short illness Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Capitol Nursing Home in Dover.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosie Mae Elliott Sudler; a son, Leroy Sudler Jr.; a daughter, Elaine Louise Sudler; his father, Norman Benjamin Sudler Sr.; and two sisters, Katherine Crowner and Margret Summers.
He is survived by five children, Yvonne Johnson, Tyrone Sudler, Brenda Sudler and Donnie Sudler, all of Dover, and Penny of Middletown; his mother, Beatrice F. Sudler of Kenton; five sisters, Rosie Ashley of Hartly, Mabel Cousins of Dover and Deretha LeCompte, Lorraine Stevens and Shirley Baynard, all of Kenton; three brothers, Arnold Sudler of North Carolina, Norman Sudler Jr. of St. Georges and .Ronald Sudler Sr. of Kenton, a son-in-law, Terry Johnson; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six broth-ers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews, including a close and devoted nephew, Wil-liam Watson; and a close friend, Bobby Evans.
Services will be noon Saturday in Greater Life Christian Church, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Margaret Elizabeth 'Betty' Bilton, 78
WYOMING - Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" Bilton of Wyoming died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Christiana Hospital, Newark, surrounded by her family. She was 78.
Mrs. Bilton was born in Bryan, Ohio, the daughter of Pierce Samuel Elsasser and Elma Becker Elsasser. She grew up near New York City.
She was a homemaker, mother and civic leader. She married Byron W. Bilton of Waco, Texas, in 1944 and shared his career in the U.S. Air Force, living in Fort Worth, Texas; Brussels, Belgium; Laon, France; Minot, N.D.; and Dover. They celebrated 50 years of marriage prior to his death in 1994.
Mrs. Bilton worked as a bookkeeper for Peoples Savings and Loan until her retirement.
She was an accomplished seamstress and dedicated needlework artisan, delighting family and friends with her creations. An avid shopper for stylish fashions, she loved to travel and enjoyed dancing.
Mrs. Bilton contributed her time, talent and energy to many community organizations, including The Round Table Club of Wyoming-Camden, Delaware State Federation of Womens' Clubs, The Singing Ladies, Daughters of the American Revolution, Officers' Wives Club, Wyoming United Methodist Church, Al-Anon and Modern Maturity Center.
She is survived by a son, Jerry A. Bilton of Wilmington; a daughter and son-in-law, Lora B. and William F. Englehart of Chadds Ford, Pa.; her grandchildren, Erika and Brad Englehart of Chadds Ford, and Jessamyn B. Abel, and her husband, Kenneth Abel, of Pikesville, Md.; her great-grandchildren, Jordan and Eva Abel of Pikesville; a devoted daughter-in-law, Regina Bilton of Odessa; and her loving companion, William Shields of Dover.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Wyoming United Methodist Church, Broad Street in Wyoming.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Margaret Rogers Darlin, 73
MILFORD - Margaret Rogers Darlin of Milford died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Al "Sandy" and Pat Darlin, whom she resided with, by her side. She was 73.
Mrs. Darlin was born in Cincinnati, and was raised on the family farm in Oxford, Ohio, by her adoptive parents, John and Rachel Rogers.
She was an accomplished pianist in her early years.
Mrs. Darlin co-owned Milford Rental Center along with her husband from 1988 to 1993. Prior to that, she worked for J.C. Penney for eight years until the store closed, and at L.D. Caulk for seven years.
She loved going to the beach and enjoyed sailing in her younger years. She was an artist and especially loved drawing. She was a devoted mother to her four sons and loved animals.
Mrs. Darlin was a former member of the Delaware Ballet in Dover.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Lewis R. Darlin Jr., in 1998.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, she is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Marcia Darlin of Hong Kong, Jeff and Barbara Darlin of Swarthmore, Pa., and Greg and Suzane Darlin of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Eunice Murphy of Hamilton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave. in Milford, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Daniel Goodwin, 98
MILFORD - Daniel Goodwin of Milford died of pneumonia Saturday, March 10, 2001, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 98.
Mr. Goodwin was born Oct. 14, 1902, in Sterling, Colo., the son of the late Charles Leander and Martha Tidwell Goodwin, pioneers in the settlement of this community.
He and his family moved to Bell, Calif., in 1949. He retired in December1965 after 45 years as a letter carrier, parcel postman and supervisor in the U.S. Postal Service, serving in both Sterling and Bell.
Upon retirement he and his wife lived in Norwalk, Conn., before moving to Milford in 1970. Retirement gave them the shared enjoyment of gardening and travel.
Mr. Goodwin was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Milford, past master of Sterling Lodge No. 54, A.F. & A.M., member of Sterling Chapter No. 47 and Sterling Commandery No. 35 of York Rite of Free Masonry, Past Worthy Patron, Sterling Chapter 68, and Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Letter Carriers Association, a 24-year member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Department, a Boy Scout leader and a volunteer first aid instructor with the American Red Cross during World War II. He also was a member of the Milford Senior Center and the Friends of the Milford Museum.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Esther S. Goodwin; his brother, Leander Ray Goodwin; his sister, Irma P. Walraven; two brothers-in-law, Ray S. Sharman and Lester R. Sharman; and two sisters-in-law, L. Irene McCarthy and Dixie K. Sharman.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane M. and Charles H. Burkhart of Milford; a grandson and his wife, Charles W. and Leigh Burkhart of Titusville, Fla.; two granddaughters and their families, Mary Lynn and James F. Salem, Matthew, Jennifer and Beth, all of Sunrise, Fla., and Ruth Ann and David R. Harrell Sr., David Jr., Amanda and Alexis, all of Margate, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille G. Sharman of Holyoke, Colo., and Billie P. Smith of San Diego; a nephew; two great-nieces; a great-nephew; two great-great nieces; and three great-great nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave. in Milford, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

John Willard Lankford, 36
SALISBURY, Md. - John Willard Lankford of Salisbury, and formerly of Milton, Del., died of cancer Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Nanticoke Hospital, Seaford, Del. He was 36.
Mr. Lankford was born May 12, 1964, in Milford, Del., the son of Evelyn West Lankford of Milton and the late Henry F. Lankford.
He graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in 1982.
He was a logger and construction worker.
Mr. Lankford loved fishing, watching racing and working outside in the yard. He was a man who was always helping other people.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of three years, Sandra Adam Lankford; three stepsons, Robert Riggin of Homestead, Fla., and William Taylor and John Taylor, both of Salisbury; two stepdaughters, Jeannie Tatman of Berlin and Jackie Meritt of Pocomoke City; a step-granddaughter, Britany Riggin of Homestead; five brothers, William Lankford and Thomas Lankford, both of Milton, Henry F. Lankford Jr. of Milford, Roy L. Lankford of Lincoln, Del., and Joseph D. Lankford of Milford; two sisters, Patricia Hennessy of Lewes, Del., and Tish Jones of Milton; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Fleischauer Funeral Home in Greenwood, Del., where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.
