Dr. Howard Bowden Maxwell
LEWES - Dr. Howard Bowden Maxwell died peacefully Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in his home after a long illness.
Dr. Maxwell was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., the son of the late Paul and Sadie Heron Maxwell.
A committed educator, he believed, with Henry Brooks Adams, that "a teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." His whole life reflected this philosophy.
Following graduation from Gettysburg College in 1952, he was commissioned as a naval officer, serving during the Korean War.
He then received his MAT from Harvard University, and taught in the Newton, Mass., public schools for three years. He then became director of alumni relations at his alma mater. He left Gettysburg in 1962 to complete his doctorate at the University of Michigan. After serving on the staff of the State University of New York at Albany, as the coordinator of academic advisement, Dr. Maxwell became dean of students at Hartwick College, Oneonta, N.Y., rising to the position of vice president for educational planning.
In 1973, he accepted an appointment as vice president of the Commission On Independent Colleges/Universities for the state of New York. After six years in Albany, he was asked to become the president of the equivalent organization in New Jersey. He was "back again on campus" in 1984, when he accepted the position of president of the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, Media, Pa.
In 1989, he was asked to return to Girard College as its president. He had been a student from age 7 until graduation from high school in that area. This was the high point of his administrative career.
In retirement, his involvement with the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware became the culmination of his commitment to education. He developed and taught courses on the American presidency, World War II, the American Revolution and the history of U.S. immigration. He also chaired the Academy's Council from 1997 to 2000.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Funk Maxwell.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Moxey Maxwell of Lewes; a daughter, Alison Maxwell Kochie of Hockessin, and her husband, John; a stepdaughter, Marcia Moxey Hodges of Fairfax, Va.; and a stepson, Thomas Taylor Hodges of Wrightsville, Pa., and his wife, Dana.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 24 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Howard B. Maxwell Endowment Fund, Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning, University of Delaware, Lewes, DE 19958; or to the Delaware Hospice Southern Division, 600 S. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

John R. 'Jack' Butler Jr., 81
SUMMIT - John R. "Jack" Butler Jr. of Summit died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Christiana Hospital. He was 81.
Mr. Butler was an Army veteran of World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart.
In 1985, he retired from Deemer Steel, New Castle, after 43 years.
He was a lifelong member of Summit United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, lay leader and chairman of the trustees. He helped maintain the church building and grounds. He also was a member of the William Lloyd Nelson Post 3792, Middletown.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith Golt Butler; a brother, Ernie E. Butler of Townsend; two sisters, Emma Kemether of Elkton, Md., and Anna Massey of Middletown; 13 nephews; 22 nieces; and many great nephews and nieces.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Summit United Methodist Church, 554 Old Summit Bridge Road, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, near Chesapeake City, Md.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Summit United Methodist Church building fund.

Donald J. Coon, 59
PITTSBURGH - Donald J. Coon of Pittsburgh and Dagsboro, Del., formerly of Dover, Del., died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in St. Clair Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 59.
Mr. Coon was born in Albany, N.Y., the son of the late James P. and Jane Shultis Coon.
He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
He worked in the systems department for PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, retiring March 1, 2001, after 311/2 years of service, including 12 years of working for PPG Industries, Cheswold, Del.
Mr. Coon was a member of the Mount Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, and the Oak Orchard-Riverdale American Legion Post 28, near Millsboro, Del.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Penny Smith Coon; a son, Skip Coon of Philadelphia; a daughter, Allison Fleming and her husband, Ray, of Pittsburgh; a sister, Marcia Hollingsworth of Harlingen, Texas; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Fleming and Alexus Fleming.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriot's Way, Millsboro. The Rev. Dr. James C. Van Der Wall will officiate.
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803; or to Delaware Hospice, 600 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Geraldine Cortese, 72
LEWES - Geraldine Cortese of Lewes died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 72.
Mrs. Cortese was a native of New Jersey and lived in Lewes for the last 10 years.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; five children, Kathy Solis of Edgewater, Md., Sue Adams and Robert Cortese Jr., both of Jackson, N.J., John Cortese of Nags Head, N.C., and Nancy Kraus of Lewes; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Long Neck.
Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of choice.

Rose M. Dembeck, 66
GEORGETOWN - Rose M. Dembeck of Georgetown died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 66.
Ms. Dembeck was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Thomas and Rose Dembeck.
She moved to the Georgetown area 13 years ago.
Ms. Dembeck was a retired clerk for the city of Philadelphia.
She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Ms. Dembeck was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Georgetown.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Bill Adams of Georgetown; two nephews, Mike Adams and Bill Adams, both of Georgetown; and three nieces, Debra Sheetz and Linda Paulmeno, both of Abescon, N.J., and Cindy Freeman of Wilton, N.H.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Edward Street, Georgetown, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

Arthur Laurence 'Larry' Field Jr., 52
MIDDLETOWN - Arthur Laurence "Larry" Field Jr. of Middletown died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Christiana Hospital, following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was 52.
Mr. Field was a survivor of polio and a lifelong advocate for people with disabilities.
He was president of A. Laurence Field & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in the Americans with Disabilities Act. He participated in drafting the ADA and other national accessibility building codes. His clients included the Delaware Lottery, Exxon Mobile Oil, the DuPont Co., the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. He provided expert witness testimony for the Texas Civil Rights Project to ensure adequate handicapped seating in stadium movie theaters. From 1980 to 1990, he served as the chief administrator of Delaware's Architectural Accessibility Board.
Mr. Field co-founded and edited the HANDi Network News, a monthly disability issues newsletter, and Wilmington Access, responsible for making public buildings in Wilmington accessible. He received the Governor's Distinguished Service Award, the DE-MD Paralyzed Veterans Association's Outstanding Volunteer Award, and former Vice President Al Gore's Hammer Award for re-inventing government. He served as co-founder and first chairperson of the Mayor's Advisory Council on Disability in Wilmington. He served on the boards of directors of The Mancus Foundation, the Union Baptist Housing Development Corp., and the St. Patrick's Senior Center.
An active member of Newark Christian Fellowship, he was the organizational founder of the Healing Rooms of Wilmington. He was also a friend of New Covenant Church, Middletown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Laurence Field Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Nancy Carol Willis; three children from his first marriage, Jennifer M. Field of Newark and Kristin E. Field and James A. Field, both of Wilmington; three sisters, Barbara Fullerton of Denver, Colo., Cathie Field Lloyd of Wilmington and Marilyn Tully of Coatsville, Pa.; a brother, Robert S. Field of Wilmington; two stepsisters, Patricia Holmbeck of West Chester, Pa., and Rita Skelly of Wilmington; a grandson, Jude Gulotti of Newark; and his mother and stepfather, Mari and J. Paul Skelly of West Chester and Juno Beach, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 W. Main St.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Healing Rooms of Wilmington, c/o Newark Christian Fellowship; or to the New Covenant Church parking lot fund, P.O. Box 52, Middletown, DE 19709.

Willie Gant, 84
SNOW HILL, Md. - Willie Gant of Snow Hill died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Snow Hill Nursing Home. He was 84.
Mr. Gant was born Sept. 12, 1916, in Americus, Ga.
He worked for the Eastern Shore Gas Co. until he retired.
Mr. Gant was a member of the Church of God in Christ until sickness came upon him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gant, Feb. 9, 2001.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Audrey Holland of Snow Hill; lots of nieces, nephews and in-laws; and a host of friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Pocomoke City.
A service will be held at noon Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. James Urie will officiate.
Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery, Pocomoke City.
