Lewis Hayes Dickerson, 80
MILFORD - Lewis Hayes Dickerson of Milford died Friday, March 14, 2003, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 80.
Mr. Dickerson was born in Milford, son of the late Augustus and Laura (Murphy) Dickerson.
He was a graduate of Milford High School. class of 1940 and the University of Delaware, class of 1946, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity.
He served in three wars, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, during his 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Dickerson was working at the Milford Chronicle as advertising manager when his reserve unit, the 512th Troop Carrier Wing, was activated in 1951. He served with the Strategic Air Command from 1951 to 1961 and flew intelligence collection missions worldwide during the Cold War.
His select crew in SAC won numerous awards flying the RB-47 six engine jet in airborne competitions, including a first place world Navigation trophy.
He was assigned to the special activities section at USAF headquarters in Washington, D.C. from 1961 to 1965, where he served as liaison officer to the Central Intelligence Agency and served as project officer for several flight operations in intelligence activities.
He transferred to the U.S. Air Forces of Europe in 1965 and continued serving in the special activities section until recalled to Washington, D.C. in 1967. He was serving in Vietnam in 1968 when he became ill and returned to the United States. He retired from the Air Force in 1969 as a lieutenant colonel and returned to Milford to become the publisher of the Milford Chronicle .
He worked with his wife, Elaine Townsend Dickerson, a well-known newspaper columnist, and helped continue a newspaper tradition established by her paternal grandfather, Col. Theodore Townsend, who founded the Milford Chronicle in 1878, and continued by her parents, Virginia and G. Marshall Townsend. Mr. Dickerson was also a partner in the Downing Oil Company that was later sold to Peninsula Oil. In the 1970s he founded the Chronicle-owned County Post in Millsboro and later was a founding partner in the Kent-Sussex Shopper (now the Delmarva Shopper).
In 1982 the Milford Chronicle was sold to Chesapeake Publishing Corporation, which also purchased the Shopper in 1983. Mr. Dickerson returned as publisher of the Chronicle in 1983 and retired as editor emeritus in 1991. He then became director of market research for Chesapeake Publishing, where his new division, Mid-Atlantic Research and Marketing, conducted research surveys, developed computerized demographic data, and produced computerized sales presentations for the CPC chain's 42 publications.
Mr. Dickerson was a board member of many organizations including the Delaware Foundation and the Delaware Community Foundation for more than 15 years and the Supreme Court Disciplinary Council Committee for six years. He was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford, where he was a past chairperson of the administrative board. He served on the University of Delaware Alumni Awards Committee and was a past president of the Milford Chamber of Commerce.
He held a private pilot's license and had flown several round trips from Milford to Kansas. He was an amateur radio operator, call sign K3FSP, and communicated with other ham radio operators worldwide.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lynne D. and Ace Sarich of Annapolis, Md., Dawn D. and David Kenton of Milford, and Leslie Dickerson of Springfield, Va.: six grandchildren, Casey Hayes Kenton of Rehoboth; D. Fletcher Kenton of Milford; Suzanne Medairy and her husband Brad, of Potomac Falls, Va.; Holly Dehart, Diana and Laura Sarich, all of Annapolis; and a great-granddaughter, Ella Medairy of Potomac Falls.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St., Milford, where friends may two hours earlier.
Burial with military honors will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, North Walnut Street, Milford.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the second floor elevator fund of Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St, Milford, DE 19963.

John Wesley Melvin Sr., 67
MARYDEL, Md. - John Wesley Melvin Sr. of Marydel died of natural causes Friday, March 14, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 67.
Mr. Melvin was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Goldsboro, son of the late Wilbur and Nellie Kemp Melvin.
He served with the 88th Airborne Divison of the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957.
He was a chemical operator for Reichold Chemicals, Cheswold, Del., retiring after 28 years.
Mr. Melvin enjoyed hunting, bluegrass music, the Baltimore Orioles, and being with friends and family, especially his wife, children, grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews, and his newest love, his great-granddaughter.
He is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 45 years, Jeannette L. Melvin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Bill Cubbage of Frederica, Del., Linda and Harry Legates Jr. of Marydel and Debbie and Gary Glanden of Willow Grove, Del.; a son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Esther Melvin of Hartly, Del.; three brothers, Wilbert Melvin Sr. of Dover, Del. George Melvin of Wyoming, Del., and Obie Melvin of Goldsboro; two sisters, Catherine Minner of Goldsboro and Ella Meredith of Ingleside; eight grandchildren, Brian Melvin of Dover, Del., Billy Cubbage and his wife, Stephanie of Hartly, Del., Kevin Cubbage of Frederica, Del., Gary and Kelly Glanden of Willow Grove, Del. and Heath, Matthew and Kylie Melvin of Hartly, Del.; and a great-granddaughter, Dylynn Nicole Cubbage of Hartly, Del.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday in the Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Templeville Cemetery, Templeville.
John Willard Blann, 66
HARTLY - John Willard Blann of Hartly died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Peninsula General Hospital, Salisbury, Md. He was 66.
Mr. Blann was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Oxford, the son of the late Roland Arthur Blann and Anna Mildred Sawyer Blann.
He had worked for Oxford Boatyard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald Blann, Roland "Skippy" Blann Jr., and Robert Blann.
He is survived by two brothers, Andy Blann of Hartly and Ronald Blann of Cambridge, Md.; three sisters, Barbara Wooters of Easton, Md., Rosalie Dean of Hurlock, Md., and Rebecca Bishop of Georgetown; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, PA, in Federalsburg, where friends may call one hour prior to service. The Rev. Steven Booth will officiate.
Instead of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, PA, to defray funeral costs, 216 N. Main St. Federalsburg, MD 21632.
Addison E. 'A.C.' Carey Jr., 26
MILLSBORO - Addison E. "A.C." Carey Jr. of Millsboro died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in his home. He was 26.
Mr. Carey was an electricians apprentice.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald C. Lynch, in January 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine E. Carey; three daughters, Kristina, Allison and Pamela, all at home; his parents, Addison E. and Nancy Carey of Millsboro; and a sister, Crystal O'Neal of Oak Orchard.
Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, in Frankford, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in Roxana Cemetery.

Sidney L. Downs Jr., 71
LEWES - Sidney L. Downs Jr. of Lewes died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 71.
Mr. Downs was born in Lewes, the son of the late Sidney L. Sr. and Mary Melee Downs.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was a maintenance engineer for 23 years for Beebe Medical Center and had also worked for Downs Maintenance Heating for 10 years retiring in 1991.
Mr. Downs was a former member of the Lewes Fire Department and an avid NASCAR fan.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Short Funeral Services, E. Market St., Georgetown.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Lewes.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lois Rulers Downs; three children, Karin L. Downs and friend, Betsy Marvel of Lewes, Dawnn D. and William Sykes of Georgetown, and Trudy I. Downs of Wilmington; two sisters: Helen Morris and Hazel Brittingham, both of Lewes; four grandchildren, Jamie L. Downs, Scott M. Sykes, Jeryd W. Sykes, and Bradly A. Downs; three great-grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions may be made to the Lewes Fire Department, Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
John J. 'Jack' Fritz Jr., 65
DOVER - John J. "Jack" Fritz Jr. of Dover died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 65.
Mr. Fritz was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Philadelphia, the son of the late John Joseph Fritz Sr. and Anna Mae Haas Fritz.
He had lived most of his married life with his wife, Joan Lansendel Fritz in southern New Jersey and had moved to Dover 11 years ago.
Mr. Fritz served during the Vietnam War and was working on helicopters at the time of his capture. He was an Ex-POW of Vietnam. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, the USN-Seabees, and the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
He had worked as a field service engineer for the Columbus office of Interbake Foods with his territory being on the East Coast.
He was a very special person who will be greatly missed by his loving wife, son, grandchildren, and friends.
Mr. Fritz was a member of the American Ex-POW and the Delaware Chapter I American Ex-POW Inc., a member of the Ionic Lodge 94 AF&AM of New Jersey, the Ancient Accepted Rites Valley of Southern N.J., and the Cresent Temple AAONMS of Trenton, N.J. He was also the Fleet Reserve Association, the Navy League of the U.S., and the American Legion.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Joan Lansendel Fritz of Dover; his loving children, James Jackson and his wife, Leanna, of Sewell, N.J., Scott Jackson and his wife, Lisa, of Harleysville, Pa., and Joan Rongione of Deptford, N.J.; and his devoted grandchildren, Sarah Lynn, James Ryan, and Cara Mac.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the East Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.
Patricia Ann Breasure Helms, 61
AIKEN, S.C. - Patricia Ann Breasure Helms of Aiken died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in The Aiken Regional Medical Center, Aiken. She was 61.
Mrs. Helms was born in Laurel.
She a member of Millbrook Baptist Church in Aiken.
She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen, and a sister, Janet Davidson.
She is survived by her husband, Tony Helms; a son, Jeff Helms of Lake Charles, La.; a daughter, Denise Musick of Lexington, N.C.; two granddaughters, Megan Musick and Grace Helms; her father and step-mother, Clinton and Emma Breasure of Frankford, Del.; four brothers, Jay, Wayne, Gerald and Jeffrey, all of Delaware; two step-brothers, Harold and Frank Esham, both of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, in Frankford, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial Cemetery, Dagsboro.
