Edward 'Murph' Murphy (Gemberling), 46
WYOMING - Edward "Murph" Murphy (Gemberling) of Wyoming died Friday, March 14, 2003, in Richmond, Va., while returning from an assignment for The (Wilmington) News Journal. He was 46.
Mr. Murphy was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He had lived in the Dover area since 1973, and graduated from Caesar Rodney High School, Camden, in 1974. He also attended Delaware State College for several years before moving to Illinois for a brief period.
In 1980, he joined The News Journal, where he eventually served as a sportswriter.
Mr. Murphy loved sports, and during his personal time, he was an avid supporter of the New York Mets, the Jets and the Rangers.
He was preceded in death by his father, William J. Gemberling, in 2000.
He is survived by his loving mother, Josephine Gemberling of Dover; a sister, Patricia Murphy Boesenberg of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Kimberly Gemberling of Rocky Mount, N.C.; his faithful black lab, Jazz; three nieces; two nephews; two great-nephews; and several aunts, uncles and numerous cousins.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Church, South State Street, Dover.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.
The family suggests contributions in his memory to the Edward V. Murphy Sports Scholarship Memorial Fund, c/o The News Journal, Wilmington.
John Paul Hannon, 63
LONG NECK - John Paul Hannon of Long Neck, formerly of Philadelphia, died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 63.
Mr. Hannon was born in Scranton, Pa., son of the late Frank and Alice Lawless Hannon.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He had worked for the Atomic Fuel Oil Co. and SPD Technologies, both in Philadelphia, retiring in 1991 after 30 years of service.
Mr. Hannon was a member of Oak Orchard-Riverdale American Legion Post 28, Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad Station 91 and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 2.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Patricia Morgan Hannon; a daughter, Deborah Smith of Orlando, Fla.; two stepsons, Ralph Papandrea of Levittown, Pa., and Richard Papandrea of Abington, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Klein of Ambler, Pa., and Jacquelyn Schools of Horsham, Pa.; a sister, Katherine DeBellis of West Warwick, R.I.; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be private.

Frank L. Wilson, 82
SEAFORD - Frank L. Wilson of Seaford died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 82.
Mr. Wilson was an U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He retired from the DuPont Co., Seaford, in 1982 after 43 years.
Mr. Wilson was a member of American Legion Post 6, Seaford.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Alice Riddleberger Wilson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald A. and Pamela A. Wilson, and Douglas R. and Charlotte A Wilson, all of Seaford; two daughters, Donna W. Ratliff of Glen Mills, Pa., and Gloria J. Burton of Seaford; and three grandchildren, Sara Ashley Hardesty of Seaford, and Jeffrey B. Ratliff and Mark S. Ratliff, both of Glen Mills.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Billy A. Carden, 75
SMYRNA - Billy A. Carden of Smyrna died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 75.
Mr. Carden was born June 4, 1925, in Mursfreeboro, Tenn., the son of the late Lynn Abbott Carden and Gladys Conry Carden.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Carden crossed the 180th Meridian in the Far East Nov. 14, 1944, on board the USS Jicarilla ATF104 in Latitude 13 N.
Mr. Carden worked at Clements Supply Co. in Clayton for 34 years, retiring in 1987 due to disability.
He enjoyed doing woodworking and being with his family and his daughter's little dog Tucker. He was known for his high spirits and good sense of humor.
Mr. Carden was a life member of VFW Post 8801 in Clayton.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Florence Naylor Carden; a son, Donald Carden of Townsend; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and James Davis of Smyrna and Carolyn and George Shaffner of Townsend; a sister and brother-in-law, Inez and Lewie Winton of Tracy City, Tenn.; five grandsons, David Carden of Townsend, Robert and Billy Davis of Smyrna and Matthew and Andrew Shaffner of Townsend; a granddaughter-in-law, Dawn Armstrong of Townsend; and several nieces, nephews and beloved in laws.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial with military honors in Townsend Cemetery.
Mary Hester Holden, 68
SNOW HILL, Md. - Mary Hester Holden of Snow Hill died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, following a long illness. She was 68.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday Mount Wesley U.M. Church, Snow Hill.
Margie S. Johnson, 95
CLEVELAND - Margie S. Johnson of Cleveland died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Cleveland. She was 95.
Ms. Johnson was born Feb. 17, 1907, in Wye Mills, Md., the daughter of the late Alexander Stewart and Jannie Royal.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by nine siblings.
She is survived by four siblings.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Easton, Md.
Burial will be in the family plot in Carmichael Cemetery, Carmichael, Md.
John Wesley Melvin Sr., 67
MARYDEL, Md. - John Wesley Melvin Sr. of Marydel died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, Del. He was 67.

Jean Paul Bizier, 76
SEAFORD - Jean Paul Bizier of Seaford died Saturday, March 15, 2003, in his home. He was 76.
Mr. Bizier was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Bidderford, Maine, son of the late Leonardis and Merilda Maxeux Bizier.
He was a graduate of Florida State University.
Mr. Bizier was a supervisor for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring from the Dover and Georgetown offices after 30 years of service. He also worked in the Wilmington, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia offices.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, during which he survived the trap at the Chosin Reservoir as a member of the 32nd Infantry Regiment. He then went to serve in Germany, for a total of eight years of service.
Mr. Bizier was a member of the Chosin Few Association, past president of the Nanticoke Little League and past president of the Seaford Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty Lankford Bizier; two sons, Larry and Don Crosby, both of Seaford; a daughter, Carole Crosby Hornsby of Seaford; a brother, Gerrard Bizier of Boca Raton, Fla.; a sister, Germaine St. Clair of Millsboro; four grandchildren, David and Keith Hornsby, both of Seaford, Cathy Hodges and her husband, Steve, of Bristol, Pa., and Kevin Hornsby and his fiancee, Christine Overton, of Greenwood.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. David B. Humphrey will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.
