James Edward Baxter, 85
MILLINGTON, Md. - James Edward Baxter of Millington died of heart failure Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 85.
Mr. Baxter was born in Kent County, the son of the late Edward and Mary Effie Kemp Baxter.
Early in life, he was raised on the family farm, and he continued to farm on his own for several years. He left the farm to work for Julian Leager in Millington, and then went to work for the Chrysler Corp. in Newark, Del., building tanks for the armed forces. He then went to their automobile plant, where he remained until his retirement in 1981 after 30 years of service.
Mr. Baxter loved the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens and was an avid NASCAR fan. For many years, he enjoyed gardening and enjoyed traveling the roads of Kent and Queen Anne's counties, keeping an eye on all the local farms.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Baxter, in 1979; two daughters, Betty Carty and Ann Wallace; a granddaughter, Pam O'Neal Lee; and a brother, Bobby Baxter.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Robert O'Neal of Clayton, Del.; a son and daughter-in-law, James Edward Baxter Jr. and Sharon Baxter of Millington; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, where friends and family may call one prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Sudlersville Cemetery, Sudlersville.

Edna C. Daniels, 78
MILLSBORO - Edna C. Daniels of Millsboro, and formerly of Georgetown, died Friday, March 16, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 78.
Mrs. Daniels was born in Lewes.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Daniels, in 1982; and by her second husband, Calvin Shockley, in 2000.
She is survived by two nephews and their wives, Horace and Linda Wilson of Georgetown and Carl and Deanna Wilson of Milton; two nieces, Lora Heck of Georgetown and Patricia Huey of Milford; and a close friend and companion, Oscar Dotterer of Georgetown.
Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert A. Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.
Evelyn C. McManus, 75
LEWES - Evelyn C. McManus of Lewes died of a stroke Friday, March 16, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 75.
Mrs. McManus had worked for 17 years in the cafeteria for the Cape Henlopen School District.
She was a member of St. Edmond's Catholic Church, were she had been very active in the choir; as a teacher for the religious-education classes; as a cantor; and in the cafeteria of the original St. Edmond's School.
She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher McManus.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, David F. McManus Sr.; three sons, David F. McManus Jr. of Seaford, Timothy Shawn McManus of Roxana and Kevin Brian McManus of Dagsboro; a daughter, Margaret Ann McVey of Lewes; two brothers, William P. Hall of Frederick, Md., and H. Douglas Hall of Rockville, Md,; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7-9 tonight at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach.
Burial will be private in St. Peter's Cemetery, Pilottown.

Hulda T. Panuska, 93
MILTON - Hulda T. Panuska of Milton died of natural causes Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Chancellor Care Center, Delmar, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was 93.
Mrs. Panuska was born in Milford, daughter of the late William and Annie Brittingham Reed.
She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed sewing.
Mrs. Panuska was a member of Grace Church, Milton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Panuska, in 1976.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dallas and Jane Roach, of Salisbury, Md.; a daughter, Shirley Carter of Milton; three grandchildren, Leslie Herrington-Leisure of Milton, Terry Culver of Salisbury and Gerry Higgins of Alexandria, Va.; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Short Funeral Services, Federal Street, Milton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.
Ruth J. Adkins, 58
MILTON - Ruth J. Adkins of Milton died following six weeks of illness Monday, March 17, 2003, in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, surrounded by her family. She was 58.
Mrs. Adkins was born in Upper Darby, Pa., daughter of the late Charles and Mary McCabe Cauler.
She was the general manager for Shawnee Country Club, Milford, for 10 years, retiring several years ago.
She loved horses and also enjoyed bowling and golfing.
Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Zoar United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Adkins, and a brother, Richard Cauler.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Edgar Adkins; a son, Dwayne Adkins of Wilmington; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and George Layton of Milton; a granddaughter, Mary Jane Adkins; a brother, George Boys of Shelton, Wash.; a sister, Elaine Roberts of St. Petersburg, Fla.; special friends June "Cookie" Buck of Bridgeville and Cindy Honaker of Milton; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Bastian, and Mrs. Bastian's husband, Jim, both of Lewes; and a brother-in-law, James W. Adkins, and his wife, Karin, both of Harbeson.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Zoar United Methodist Church, 24463 Gravel Hill Road, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Eleanor Altfather, 76
DENTON, Md. - Eleanor Altfather of Denton died of natural causes Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Ruxton Health of Denton. She was 76.
Mrs. Altfather was born in Salisbury, daughter of the late Laverty Thomas and Emma Pettyjohn Steele.
She was a beautician in her home in Denton and a homemaker.
Mrs. Altfather loved to play golf and bridge and was a charter member of the Caroline Country Club. She also was a member of the Caroline American Legion Post 29 Auxiliary and a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, both in Denton.
She is survived by her husband, Harold J. Altfather of Denton; and two sons and two daughters-in-law, Douglas L. and Susan Murray of Bristol, Va., and Jack Altfather and Lou Ann Holland of Severn.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in the Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be private.

Agnes T. Boyles, 83
SMYRNA - Agnes T. Boyles of Smyrna died of natural causes Monday, March 17, 2003, in her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Boyles was born in Baltimore, daughter of the late Stephen and Ida Urban. She moved to Delaware in her youth.
She was a very devoted mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Boyles was a member of St. Polycarp Parish, Smyrna; and a life member and past president of the ladies auxiliary of Citizens' Hose Co., Smyrna.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Boyles, in 1976; and a grandson, Greg Melville, in 1988.
She is survived by a son, William Boyles of Ocean View; two daughters, Nancy Melville of Woodstown, N.J., and Carol Timmons of Smyrna; a brother, Francis Urbaniak of Elkton, Md.; two sisters, Rose Cole of Clayton and Mary Green of Dover; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be noon Friday in St. Polycarp Catholic Church, Ransom Lane and South Street, Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
