Clara M. Spedden, 90
WILLARDS, Md. - Clara M. Spedden of Willards died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Waterview Healthcare Center, Salisbury. She was 90.
Mrs. Spedden was born in Pittsville, the daughter of the late Sam and Malissa Ann Bowden Baker.
She had been a seamstress for the Rambo Shirt Factory, Powellville, for 32 years retiring in the early 1980s.
Mrs. Spedden attended the New Hope United Methodist Church and the CHEER Center, both in Willards.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ira Smack, in 1952; her second husband, H. Granville Spedden, in 1978; a daughter, Betty Dorothy Smack, in 1953; and a sister, Addie Baker, in September 2000.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Margaret Ann Collinson of Pennsylvania; three nieces, Linda J. Davis and Paula A. White, both of Gumboro, Del., and Janet M. Clendaniel of Magnolia, Del.; and two step-grandsons.
A service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Jay Bunting will officiate.
Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, Whaleyville.
Mary G. Tuneff, 88
HENDERSON, Md. - Mary G. Tuneff of Henderson died Tuesday, Jan. 2. 2001, in Talbot Hospice House, Easton. She was 88.
Mrs. Tuneff was born in Pautucket, R.I., the daughter of the late Wasel Gniecko and Katherine Gniecko.
In 1942, she moved to Caroline County.
She worked for Latex, Dover Del., for 33 years, retiring in 1976.
Mrs. Tuneff was a life member of the Goldsboro Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, a member of St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church, Wilmington, Del., and a member or the Twenty-Five Year Club at Latex.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jordan Tuneff, in October 1942.
She is survived by two sons, James Tuneff of Henderson and Michael J. Tuneff of Bridgetown; a daughter, Barbara T. Bratten of Easton; two brothers, William Gniecko of Denton and Alex Gniecko of Dover; a sister, Helen Ligush of Wilmington; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Denton Cemetery.

Stanley F. 'Lefty' Twardowski, 75
POT-NETS - Stanley F. "Lefty" Twardowski of Pot-Nets, and formerly of Wilmington, died of respiratory failure Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 75.
Mr. Twardowski was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Wilmington, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Twardowski.
He was a retired iron worker and welder.
He is survived by two sons, Richard C. Twardowski and Ronald Twardowski, both of New Castle; two daughters-in-law, Judy and Terry Twardowski, both of New Castle; a sister, Lucy Kwiatkowski of Wilmington; four grandchildren; a great grandson; and his companion of many years, Virginia H. Griffith.
A service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Long Neck, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be private.
Elisabeth Marie Williams, 81
FAIRFAX, Va. - Elisabeth Marie Williams of Fairfax died of heart failure Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in her home. She was 81.
Mrs. Williams was born April 2, 1919, in Cape Charles, the daughter of the late Solomon and Charlotte Daisey.
She formerly was a credit union administrator.
Mrs. Williams was a member of the Church of Good Shepherd, Burke, and a former member of the Christ Church, Dover, Del. She also was a member of AARP 721, Dover, Gold Star Wives, and the Pocahontas Council of Red Men.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Williams.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy W. Powell; a son-in-law, Justin C. Powell; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth P. Hauler and Christopher Reed Powell.
Friends may call 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at B.D. Holland Funeral Home, Nassawadox.
Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Cape Charles Cemetery. The Rev. Crandle of Christ Church will officiate.

Juanita Ruth Williams, 76
HARRINGTON - Juanita Ruth Williams of Harrington, and formerly of Arnold, Md., died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in her home. She was 76.
Mrs. Williams was born May 23, 1924, in Chicago, the daughter of the late Walter Leo and Alta Ruth Shannon Heisler. She moved to the Harrington area in 1989.
She graduated from Annapolis (Md.) High School in 1942.
She worked the switchboard and in the catalogue and auditing departments for Sears, Annapolis, for 20 years, retiring in 1989.
Mrs. Williams was a foster mother for more than 90 children.
She was a member of Union Methodist Church, Burrsville, Md.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Williamette Jones, in 1996.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, whom she married on Aug. 15, 1942, Karwell M. Williams; four sons, Timothy Williams of Marriottsville, Md., Daniel Terry Williams of Westland, Mich., Christopher Robert Williams of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jason Williams of Thomasville, Ga.; two daughters, Diane Scott of Fraser, Mich., and Amanda Bain of Denton, Md.; a sister, Marlene Geiman of Arnold; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Fleegle-Helfenbein Funeral Home, P.A., Greensboro, Md.
A service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Methodist Church.

Janice Louise Scott, 46
DOVER - Janice Louise Scott of Dover died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. She was 46.
Mrs. Scott was born Aug. 4, 1954, in New Brunswick, N.J., the daughter of Johnnie and Elizabeth Drew.
She attended and graduated from Dover High School in 1973. She then attended Delaware State College.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie Drew III, in 1993.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 26 years, Clifford Larry Scott; a daughter, Crystal Nicole Scott; and a host of family and friends in Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in Delaware Veteran's Cemetery, Bear.
Delmar Lloyd Boss Sr., 87
HARMONY - Delmar Lloyd Boss Sr. of Harmony, near Preston died of cancer Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in his home. He was 87.
Mr. Boss was born Nov. 15, 1913 in Hopkins, R.I., the son of the late Howard C. and Della Tabor Boss.
He married the former Helen C. Todd on July 27, 1940.
Mr. Boss lived and worked in the Preston area for over 53 years. He was employed by local farmers, Brookes Nagel Feed Mill for 12 years and Essay, Inc. for 10 years.
He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. He was devoted to his family and was a loving and patient father and grandfather who always gave of his time to family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 28, 1980.
He is survived by two daughters, Betty Lou Scott of Camden, Rose Marie Johnson of Preston, Md.; a son Delmar Lloyd Boss Jr, of Preston; a brother Charles Boss of Polk City, Fla; three sisters Gladys Fitzgerald of Aurora, Conn, Ruth Rathbun of West Kingston, R.I., Jamie Sisson of Wakefield, his wife's family; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday at the Williamson Funeral Home, 311 South Main St., Federalsburg, Md., where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday.

Emma Jane Wilson, 76
ELLENDALE - Emma Jane Wilson of Ellendale died surrounded by her family Monday, April 7, 2003, in her home. She was 76.
Mrs. Wilson was born in Slaughter Neck, daughter of the late Samuel "Goldy" and Mary Ann (Lewes) Coverdale.
She was a graduate of Milford High School and the Milford Hospital School of Nursing. After receiving her nursing degree, she moved to California to serve in the Red Cross Cadette Corp by working in the polio wards. She returned to St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia to continue her studies as a nurse anesthetist. After completion of her studies, Mrs. Wilson moved Downstate and began working as a nurse at Dover Hospital (now known as Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital). She finally settled in Wilmington and went to work at Emily P. Bissell Hospital in Wilmington as the nursing floor manager, retiring in 1959 after many years of nursing. She was a private duty nurse for many years following her retirement, caring for people of all ages, including her mother and mother-in-law.
She enjoyed camping and traveling with her family all over the East Coast from the Smoky Mountains to Maine.
Mrs. Wilson was a lifetime member of Berea Presbyterian Church of Hockessin and also attended Covenant Presbyterian Church in Stanton before moving to lower Delaware. She served as a commissioner for the Chesapeake Bay Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts of the Delmarva Council for many years, acting as the summer camp nurse.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Wilson, in 1985; two sisters, Alice Sylvester and Florence Wilkins; two brothers-in-law, Donald Wilkins and Alvin (Chum) Wilson; and two children, Harold A. Wilson Jr. and Mary Ann Wilson.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Giroso, with whom she lived; a son, Dave Wilson of Parkersburg, W. Va.; a brother, Samuel Lewes Coverdale of Buena Vista, Ca.; a sister, Gov. Ruth Ann Minner of Milford; five grandchildren, Wendy Jane and Allyssa Mae Giroso, both of Ellendale, Jacqueline Anne and Sarah Nichole Wilson, both of Parkersburg, W. Va., Daniel Eric Swanson of Newark; a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren; and her dear friends, John and Anne Stolfuz and family of Georgetown, Pa., Bonnie Hayslett and family of Smyrna and Donald T. Moore and family of Pot Nets.
A celebration of life service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday in Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Effie D. Troyer, 89
HARTLY - Effie D. Troyer of Hartly died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in her home. She was 89.
Mrs. Troyer was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Hutchinson, Kan., daughter of the late Dan and Anna (Yutzy) Mast.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred D. Troyer; and a son, David Troyer.
She is survived by four sons, Roman Troyer, Allen Troyer and Melvin Troyer, all of Dover, and Daniel Troyer of Wyoming; four daughters, Martha Ann Miller of Dover, Erma Webbert of Clayton, Mary Yoder of Hartly and Naomi Mast of Mondovi, Wis.; 64 grandchildren; and 78 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the home of Roman Troyer, 2529 Hazlettville Road, Dover, with John Yoder officiating.
Burial will be in the Amish Cemetery, Dover.
Viola Anna Carpenter, 87
DOVER - Viola Anna Carpenter of Westminster Village Retirement Community, Dover died of natural causes Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Westminster Village Health Center. She was 87.
Mrs. Carpenter was born in Caroline County, Md., daughter of the late Charles and Mary Boyd Glanden.
She worked for I.L.C. for 20 years, retiring in 1976. Her favorite job during that time was working on the Apollo spacesuits the astronauts wore on the moon.
After her retirement, she worked as a volunteer for the Modern Maturity Center, Dover, until her health failed.
Mrs. Carpenter loved spending time with her family, and was proud of her grandchildren and was always there for them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Carpenter Sr., March 16, 1972; two brothers, Louis Glanden and Arthur Glanden; and a sister, Pearl Ryan.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George B. Carpenter Jr. and Lois A. Carpenter of Felton; a grandson, his wife and a step-great-grandson, Jeffrey B. Carpenter, Mary H. Carpenter and Rodney S. Simons, all of Felton; a granddaughter and great-grandson, Trisha L. Queen and Aaron D. Queen, both of Milford; three sisters, Anna Mae Walls of Milford, Cora Lane of Houston and Bessie McKinney of New Castle; two sisters-in-law, Charlotte (Glanden) Burke of Dover and Alice Glanden; and many nephews and nieces.

Emma Elizabeth Guessford Coulbourn, 91
SEAFORD - Emma Elizabeth Guessford Coulbourn of Seaford died of congestive heart failure Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Chancellor Care Center, Delmar. She was 91.
Mrs. Coulbourn was born in Ridgely, Md., daughter of the late Hiram and Mary Ellen Cecil Guessford.
She was a seamstress.
Mrs. Coulbourn was a member of St John's United Methodist Church, Seaford.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Edward Coulbourn, in 1969.
She was survived by two nephews, Arthur H. Cohee of Ridgely and Mervin K. Cohee of Grasonville, Md.; and a niece, Teressa Stoops of Queen Anne's, Md.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.

Wilhelmina F. 'Wilma' Curnoles, 83
REHOBOTH BEACH - Wilhelmina F. "Wilma" Curnoles of Rehoboth Beach died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 83.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Curnoles, in May 2000; a daughter, Susan Manske in March 1997; and her parents, Hendrkus and Zwaantje Roos.
Mrs. Curnoles was a member of the American Legion and former president of its auxiliary.
She is survived by three sons, Wayne Curnoles of Hackettown, N.J., Bruce Curnoles of Moscow, Pa., and Keith Curnoles of Leighigh Acres, Fla.; two sisters, Fredericka Wunderly of Denville, N.J., and Nancy Duetsch of Belleville, N.J.; and two brothers, Dirk Roos of Belleville and John Roos of Bloomfield, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Norma Lee Fearins, 53
PRESTON, Md. - Norma Lee Fearins of Preston died of leukemia Sunday, April 8, 2001, in the University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore. She was 53.
Mrs. Fearins was born Dec. 4, 1947, in Easton, daughter of Alvin Fearins of Williston and the late Catherine Blazejak Fearins.
She attended North Caroline High School, Ridgely, and graduated from the Macqueen Gibbs School of Nursing, Easton, in 1968.
Mrs. Fearins worked in the intensive-care unit at The Memorial Hospital at Easton and at the Easton Shore State Hospital, Cambridge, as a nurse. She most recently worked at Preston Trucking Co. for more than 10 years until her illness.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and cooking, and had an enormous love for animals.
Mrs. Fearins had been a member of the Federalsburg Homemakers Club, as well as the Federalsburg Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Samuel Fearins, who she married Sept. 20, 1968; a daughter, Laura Fearins, and her fiancé, John Wooters, of Preston; two brothers, John Fearins and his wife, Marlene, of Williston, and Jesse Fearins and his wife, Nancy, of Williston; and many nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Main Street, Preston, with the Rev. Mark Farrnell officiating.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Federalsburg.

The Rev. Virginia George, 74
WILMINGTON - The Rev. Virginia George of Wilmington died after a short illness Thursday, April 5, 2001, in her home. She was 74.
The Rev. George was the former pastor of Refuge Temple and United Miracle Temple Church, Wilmington
She was preceded in death by three children, Madeline Baker, Roscoe Dennis and Porsha Jones.
She is survived by a son, John Dennis; two daughters, Evangelist Ella Purnell and Shirley King; four sons-in-laws, Bishop David Purnell, Wendall King, Gilbert Jones and Willie Baker; a loving cousin, Barabara Ann Winder; three foster children, Seghi Shroud, Omar Williams and Allister Booth of Wilmington; three devoted foster children, Maurice and Eileen Lewis, and Kenneth Mitchell; a devoted goddaughter and friend, Edna Davis; 28 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Church of the Living Word, 810-816 S. Heald St., Wilmington, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony.

Mack E. Mitchell Jr. 54
CECILTON, Md. - Mack E. Mitchell of Cecilton, formerly of Townsend, Del., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Union Hospital, Elkton. He was 54.
Mr. Mitchell was a self-employed draftsman.
He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 626. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Smyrna, Del., where he served as a clerk and a treasurer. He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and was a Scout pack master for Troop 635.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mack E. Mitchell Sr., in 1997; and his wife, Melanie, in 1999.
He is survived by his mother, Doris B. Mitchell of Millsboro, Del.; a daughter, Darcy Ellen Mitchell of Cecilton; three sons, Matthew E. Mitchell and Mark E. Mitchell, both of Cecilton, and Joshua Meroadante of Middletown; a brother, Jay D. Mitchell of Millsboro; a sister, Bonnie M. Boyce of Georgetown; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Clark Farm and Massey Church roads, Smyrna.

Katherine Dickerson Phillips, 82
VIOLA - Katherine Dickerson Phillips of Viola died Monday, April 9, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 82.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Laurel, daughter of the late John E. Dickerson and Bessie E. Calloway Dickerson.
She retired from the Stockley Center, Georgetown, as a charge attendant.
Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of her world. Her door and her heart were always open and no one ever left her home empty-handed. The memory of her patience, generosity and warmth will comfort her family for years to come.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Christ the Cornerstone Community Church, Laurel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Milton W. Hastings; and her second husband, Layton L. Phillips, Nov. 24, 2000, to whom she was married for 22 years; a son, Robert Hastings; a brother, Raymond Dickerson; and a sister, Anna Mae Dorman.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rosalee and Norman E. Jackson of Viola; a stepdaughter and her husband, Mary Lou and Burton Moore Jr. of Seaford; three stepsons, John Edington Phillips of Grasonville, Md., Martin James and Laura Phillips of Grasonville, and Frank Edward and Sharon Phillips of Centreville, Md.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Louann and Dave Vari of Felton and Shelly and Eric Mattson of Wilmington; a grandson, Curt and his wife, Susan Jackson, of Wilmington, seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
