Florence B. Ewell
FRANKFORD - Florence B. Ewell, 87, of Frankford died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Millsboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Millsboro.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Collie Rickards Lekites.

She had been a bookkeeper for Hickman and Willey Inc. in Selbyville and a member of Roxana United Methodist Church in Rosana. Her husband, Robert W. Ewell, died in 1986.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet B. Lyons of Fenwick Island; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hastings Funeral Home in Selbyville, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate. Interment will be held at Roxana Cemetery in Roxana.

Memorial contributions may be sent to American Diabetes Association, 105 Lavinia St., Milton, Del. 19968.

Effie E. Dennis
Effie E. Dennis of Millsboro died April 15, 2000 at her home. She was 88.

Dennis, who was born in Snow Hill, Md., was the daughter of the late Albert and Ella Bonnaville Phillips.

She last worked in the Food Service Department at the Millsboro Nursing Home, retiring in 1977.

She attended the Millsboro Wesleyan Church.

Dennis was preceded in death by two brother, Gus Phillips and Maurice Phillips; three sisters, Eva Pusey, Minnie Beach and Mary Shockley; and a son-in-law, Russell W. Murray in 1999.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Hitchens Murray, with whom she lived; a sister, Mildred Tuckett of Seaford; four grandchildren, Rhonda Timmons, Kandy Malone, Russell Murray Jr. and Dennis Murray; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Timmons, Jordan Malone and Caitlin Murray.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington Street, Millsboro, where friends may call one hour before the service. The Rev. Douglas Albert will officiate. Burial will in Millsboro Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 DuPont Highway, Suite 107, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Florence E. Burton
Florence E. Burton of Millsboro died April 14, 2000 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 94.

Burton, who was born in Millsboro, was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ida Hitchens Burton.

She worked as a cook years ago for Millsboro School No. 204. After that, she was a foster grandparent at the Hospital for the Mentally Retarded, now the Stockley Center, near Millsboro.

Burton was a member of Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Millsboro, where she served on the usher board, missionary board and steward board and was a former church secretary. She also sang in the gospel and chancel choirs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Burton Sr., in 1974.

She is survived by six daughters, Anna M. Showell of Georgetown, Dorothy E. Byrd, Martha V. Wise and Fay E. Burton, all of Millsboro, Mary I. Taylor of Milford and Princess C. Purnell of Newark; seven sons, Herbert L. Burton Jr. of Seaford, William E. Burton of Philadelphia, Pa., Charles T. Burton and Oliver V. Burton, both of Millsboro, John E. Burton of Dagsboro, H. Nelson Burton of Dover and Joseph L. Burton of Wilmington; five grandchildren she raised as her own, Patsy Taylor, William Hatton, Ronald Burton, Pamela Campbell and Louis Burton; 52 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 at Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church, DuPont Highway, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours before the service. The Rev. Daylan K. Greer Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery, Millsboro.

Donna Bridges
Donna Bridges of Long Neck died April 17, 2000 at her home. She was 57.

Bridges, who was born in Chester, Pa., was the daughter of the late Francis D. and Irene Armstrong Mackert.

She had been a nurse at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, retiring in 1995 because of disability.

Bridges was a founding member of the Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad and was a member of the Oak Orchard Community Church in Oak Orchard.

She is survived by two sons, Robert M. Bridges and Travis S. Bridges of Millsboro; a daughter, Kimberly L. Sekcienski of Georgetown; a brother, Ronald Mackert of Millsboro; a sister, Delores Foster of Berwick, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 at the Oak Orchard Community Church. The Rev. J. Allen Miller will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to defray funeral expenses, payable to the Watson Funeral Home to the account of Donna Bridges, c/o Robert and Gail Bridges, R.D. 6 Box 118, Millsboro, DE 19966.

Benjamin F. Walker
Benjamin F. Walker of Georgetown, died April 10, 2000 at the home of his son. He was 76.

Born in Lockhaven, Pa., he was the sone of the late James and Mary Driver Walker.

Walker was a veteran of World War II, serving time with the U.S. Army. He was the manager of the Fairfax Sunoco Station in Talleyville for 10 years before retiring in 1986.

Walker was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Vernon Walker, in 1995 and a step-daughter, Donna Houser.

He is survived by his son, Benjamin F. Walker Jr. of Georgetown; four daughters, Frances Varner of Chester, Pa., Sandra Mewha and Emily Starkey, both of Chester and Ada Walker of Aston, Pa.; four sisters, Jeanette Gehman of Gap, Pa., Ruth Ulsh of Florida; Willa Mae Evan of Aston, Pa.; and Linda Walsh of Chester, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services were held April 13 at the Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro followed by internment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be sent to The Account of Benjamin F. Walker, c/o Watson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 125, Millsboro, DE. 19966, to help defray funeral expenses.

Frank J. Vicari
Frank J. Vicari of Long Neck and formerly of New York, died April 10 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 73.

Vicari was born in Staten Island, N.Y., to the late Joseph Vicari and Flora Lacamera.

He was retired from the automobile business and was a member of the Lewes R.C. Club.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Anita Vicari; a daughter, Patricia Werner of Cherry Hill, N.J.; three sons, Frank Jr. of Setauket, N.Y., David of Binghamton, N.Y. and Andrew of Holbrook, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 13 at Melson Funeral Services in Long Neck.

William R. Crowley
William R. Crowley of Bethany Beach died April 14, 2000. He was 66.

A native of Chevy Chase, Md., Crowley graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School in 1951 and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was a general contractor and president of W.R. Crowley Builders, Inc. building homes and commercial buildings in the Bethany Beach area for the past 18 years.

Prior to relocating to the Eastern Shore, Crowley was vice president of Donohoe Construction Company in Washington, D.C.

Crowley was past president of the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce and was a member of several other religious and civic organizations.

His first wife, Doris Adkins Crowley, and a daughter, Mary Ellen Crowley, preceded him in death.

Crowley is survived by his wife of 29 years, Patricia Devereux Crowley; three sons, William R. Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn., Anthony D. of Sterling, Va. and Daniel W., a seminarian with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington; a daughter, Midge Van Trump of Plant City, Fla.; three brothers, Thomas R. of Rehoboth, Richard M. of Easton, Md. and Edward J. of Bethesda, Md.; a sister, Jane C. Koones of Bethesda, Md.; and two grandsons, Lowen Van Trump and Kenneth Crowley.

A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, April 17 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests mass cards or contributions to your own favorite charity.

Hazel E. McCray
Hazel E. McCray of Frankford died April 13, 2000 at Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, Md. She was 60.

McCray, who was born in Frankford, was the daughter of the late Virgil D. McCray Sr. and Elizabeth Sturgis McCray. She was the granddaughter of the late Joseph H. and Frances Collick McCray.

She was a homemaker.

McCray was a member of the Antioch A.M.E. Church in Frankford.

She was preceded in death by her son, Larry L. McCray on Feb. 15.

She is survived by a son, Michael McCray of Millsboro; a daughter, Patricia McCray of Frankford; four brothers, Virgil D. McCray Jr., Charles McCray, Alfred McCray and Allen McCray, all of Frankford; two sisters, Barbara McCray of Frankford and Jenny Hall of Millsboro; and six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services were held April 18 at the Antioch A.M.E. Church, Frankford. The Rev. Calvin O. Price officiated. Burial was in Antioch Church Cemetery.
