Margaret M. Sharpe

A funeral service for Margaret M. Sharpe, 91, of Milford, was held on Monday, July 23 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, New Castle. Mrs. Sharpe, formerly of New Castle, died on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 in her home.

Mrs. Sharpe was a homemaker.

During the 1960s, she worked at the former Ludlow's in Wilmington. During the 1970s, she worked at the former Clemente's in New Castle.

Mrs. Sharpe was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence G. Sharpe, in 1965; and a daughter, Gertrude Dunn, in 1990.

She is survived by her children, Louise Carothers of Milford, Margaret Nelson of New Castle, Robert Nussbaumer of New Castle, and Ann Bielicki of Newport; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington.

Clifford L. Summers

A funeral service for Clifford L. Summers, 67, of Camden, was held on Saturday, July 21 at First Pilgrim Baptist Church, Camden. Mr. Summers died on Thursday, July 12, 2001 of cancer at home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Summers was born in 1933 in Wyoming, the son of the late Walter and Clara Summers.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Summers was educated in the William Henry School District.

He was a self-employed ceramic tile setter before being employed by the Chrysler Corp., from which he retired after 23 years.

Mr. Summers was a member of the St. Paul AME Church in Camden, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Prudence Lodge 6.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Summers; two brothers; and three sisters.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Elsie Jackson of Dover; three sisters, Reba Fullman, Lillie George and Blanche Baynard, all of Dover; two sisters-in-law, Marthena Summers of Dover and Madaline Jackson of Clayton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial was in Willow Grove Cemetery, Willow Grove.

Marvin E. Hughes

A memorial service for Marvin E. Hughes, 52, of Houston, was held on Friday, July 20 at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Harrington. Mr. Hughes died on Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Milford Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Hughes was born in 1948 in Frederica, the son of Willard William Isaac Hughes Sr. and the late Elizabeth Rosella Hughes.

He served our country in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran.

He was a self-employed licensed contractor/builder.

Mr. Hughes loved hunting and the games of baseball, softball, horseshoes and billiards.

In addition to his mother, who died in 2000, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Willard William Isaac Hughes Jr., in 1991.

Mr. Hughes is survived by three daughters, Tarra Gourdine of Felton, Dawn Duffy of Harrington, and Brianna Lofland of Milford; five sisters, Brenda and Marilyn Hughes, both of Houston, Shirley Davis of Greenwood, Charlene Poulson of Harrington and Karen Woodlin of Milford; five brothers, Martin, Ronald, Larry and Wayne Hughes, all of Houston, and James Hughes of Harrington; his stepmother, Genelle Hughes of Houston; a special friend, Emma Smith of Harrington; four grandchildren, Shayna, Davante and Jada Gourdine, and Destiny Duffy; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

Arrangements were by Bennie Smith, Dover.

Burial was in Williamsville Cemetery.

Blanche S. Duvall

A funeral service for Blanche S. Duvall, 73, of Wyoming, was held on Thursday, July 19 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, Dover. Ms. Duval died on Sunday, July 15, 2001 in Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Ms. Duvall was born in 1928 in Goldsboro, Md., the daughter of the late Harry Seward and Elsie Wheeler Seward.

She was raised in the Marydel, Md., area.

Ms. Duvall worked at Playtex for 40 years as an advertising correspondent supervisor, retiring in 1990.

She enjoyed quilting for her children, flower gardening, and traveling the United States and overseas.

Ms. Duvall was a member of the Modern Maturity Center in Dover and the Harrington Senior Center, where she volunteered for crafts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son in 1956; and a brother, William "Billy" Seward, in 1989.

She is survived by five daughters, Rebecca Puglia of Cary, N.C., Rita Perone of Camden, Rosalie Austin of Townsend, Carla O'Neal of Clayton and Kimberly Gunter of Marydel; two brothers, Henry Seward of Bridgetown, N.J., and Charles Seward of Mansfield, Ohio; five sisters, Louise Bowdle of Marydel, Md., Emma Lamb of Viola, Ida Freeman of Felton, Jeanette Melvin of Marydel, Md., and Elsie Toulson of Sudlersville, Md.; seven grandchildren, Anthony Puglia, Paula "Dee" Perone, Anthony Perone, Paul Perone II, Matthew Puglia, David Armor and Nicole Armor: and 10 great-grandchildren, Shane Austin, Taylor Carroll, Anthony Perone II, Shanyn Austin, Kevin Perone, Sie Puglia, Alyssa Austin, Kayla Perone, Dorian Perone and Gage Bickel.

Burial was in Templeville Cemetery in Maryland.

A celebration of her life was held following the burial in the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge, Wyoming.

Beulah S. Elliott

A private funeral service was held for Beulah S. Elliott, age not disclosed, of Dover. Mrs. Elliott died on Tuesday, July 17, 2001.

Mrs. Elliott was born in Dover, the daughter of the late William and Bertha Swiggett.

She worked for Richardson & Robbins Co. as a food packer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel, in 1965; a brother, William Swiggett; and a sister, Birtie Thomson.

She is survived by a sister, Ethel Harvey of Dover; a brother, Francis Swiggett of Magnolia; a very special niece, Bonnie Brashears; and a very special friend, Fred.

Arrangements were by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Richard `Rick' Brown

A remembrance service for Richard "Rick" Brown, 52, of Dover, was held on Friday, July 20 at Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Brown died on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mr. Brown was born in 1949 in El Paso, Texas, the son of Walter and Marianne Sprowl Cech.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Mr. Brown worked at many warehouse jobs in the Dover area.

He was a member of Walter L. Fox Post #2 in Dover.

Mr. Brown was an avid bowler and fisherman. He was a Nascar fan and, to him, Mark Martin was the best.

He is survived by a brother, William Brown of Dover.

Burial will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Henry E. DuShuttle

A memorial service for Henry E. DuShuttle, 75, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., and Dover, will be held at the convenience of the family. Mr. DuShuttle died on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at Kent General Hospital.

Mr. DuShuttle was born in Felchburg, Mass., the son of the late Louis and Elsie DuShuttle.

He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WW II as an air navigator.

He was later employed with Bethlehem Steel and eventually retired from Ryerson Steel of Jersey City, where he served as a purchasing agent until 1979.

Upon retiring form the steel industry, he owned a motel in the Long Beach Island area.

Mr. DuShuttle was a longtime member of the American Legion, Bagoda Post 117.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joanne L. Hoist DuShuttle of Dover and Little Egg Harbor; a son, Dr. Richard P. DuShuttle of Dover; a daughter, Janet Sims of Dover; a sister, Louetta Kirschbaum of Maine, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements are by the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, Dover.

The family suggests contributions to: the Bay Health Foundation, 640 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Minnie Bice Finsen

A memorial service for Minnie Bice Finsen, 75, of Levittown, Pa., was held on Saturday, July 21 at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc. in Levittown, Pa. Mrs. Finsen, formerly of Dover, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at her home in Bristol Township.

Born and raised in Dover, Mrs. Finsen was a resident of Bristol Township since 1954.

She was employed as a secretary with Lower Makefield Township for several years in the 1950s. She was also a volunteer at Lower Bucks Hospital.

Mrs. Finsen is survived by her husband, Eric Finsen; two sons, Niels B. and Micki Finsen of Bristol, Pa., and Mark E. and Janet Lynn Finsen of Levittown, Pa.; a sister, Eleanor B. Flewellen of Irvington, Va.; four grandchildren, James, Erica Lynn, Adam and Erin; a great-granddaughter, Taylor; three nieces, Mary Carol Yoshino and Elena and Eliza Zazzera; and one nephew, Adam Zazzera.

Chester Rudy Freed

A private funeral service was held in Lebanon, Pa., for Chester Rudy Freed, 81, of Dover. Mr. Freed, formerly of Lebanon, Pa., died on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 in Capital Nursing Home, Dover.

Mr. Freed was born in 1920 in Pottstown, Pa., son of the late Chester Rosenberger Freed and Naomi Agnes Rudy Freed.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was stationed in Charleston, S.C., on a Y0134 oil tanker, and was a seaman second class.

He was an industrial engineer for TRW, Harrisburg, Pa., retiring in 1980.

Mr. Freed was a past commander of the American Legion Post 158, Lebanon; a charter member of the American Veterans Association; a member of the West Shore Elks; and the Navy Club Ship 91, Lebanon.

He was the past state chef de gare for the Pennsylvania Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huite Chevaux. He also served as the commissaire intendant for that organization and was an active member of the Lebanon County Voiture 55. In 1999, he was recognized as the Outstanding Lebanon County Legionnaire.

Mr. Freed is survived by his wife, Margaret Mary Freed of Dover; a son, Chester William Freed of Dover; and a grandson, Jason Eric Freed of Seneca, S.C.

Arrangements were by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Karl L. Hausler

A funeral service for Karl L. Hausler, 83, of Felton, was held on Sunday, July 22 at Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, with the Rev. Dr. Philip Lawton officiating. Mr. Hausler died on Thursday, July 19, 2001 in his home.

Mr. Hausler was born in Garfield, N.J., son of the late Julius Edwin and Emma Schroder Hausler.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II in the 242 Bomb Squad and was a B17 crew chief stationed in Grand Island, Neb.

Mr. Hausler retired in 1980 from the Continental Can Co. in Passaic, N.J. He also worked at the National Cup Co., Dover.

After his retirement, he spent his winters in Florida, where he participated in a 40-member choral group entertaining at local nursing homes and RV parks.

Mr. Hausler was a member of the American Legion Post 2, Dover; the AARP; the Harrington Senior Center; the Milford Senior Center; the Modern Maturity Center, Dover; and Felton United Methodist Church.

His past memberships included Family Campers and RVs; 55 Bowling League, Milford; and the Dover Dance Club.

Some of his greatest childhood memories were meeting aviator Charles A. Lindbergh, and going to Yankee Stadium where he met Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hausler was preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years, Shirley Herman Hausler; a daughter, Suzanne H. Kovatch; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Cox Rawding.

He is survived by his second wife of 22 years, Musetta Cox Hausler; a daughter and son-in-law, Karlene H. and Roger Noble of Pensacola, Fla.; a son-in-law, Ernest Kovatch of Newark; a sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and William Trent of Rutherford, N.J.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, James and Priscilla Moore and John E. and Carol Moore, both of Felton; three stepdaughters, Janet Mitchell of Milford, Shirley Brewington of Amarillo, Texas, and Barbara Boone of Viola; a stepson, Charles Cox of Milford; a stepson-in-law, George Rawding Jr. of Felton; two grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 14 step-grandchildren.

Burial was in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
