Clara Yuvon Spivey ‘Peanut’ Clark

Funeral services for Clara Yuvon Spivey “Peanut’ Clark, 71, of Hartly were held Friday, Oct. 1 in Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Ms. Clark died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Ms. Clark was born on June 25, 1933, in Tabor City, N.C., daughter of the late Grover and Clara Spivey.

She worked in the restaurant and bar business for more than 43 years, retiring in 1996.

Ms. Clark loved gardening, reading, cooking and sports, and had been a loyal Dallas Cowboy fan since the 1960s. She played basketball, volleyball and softball in her youth in Wilmington, N.C., as well as football, with the boys. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and an awesome GEE-GEE.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Adue Clark; and a sister, Theresa Jane Hartnett.

Ms. Clark is survived by two sons, Robert Lee Phillips Jr. and Timothy William Gioielli of New York; three daughters, Brookie Carmen Chance of Delaware, Robin Carleen Clark of South Carolina, and Mary Ellen Sander of Texas; two sisters, Violet Tysinger of North Carolina and Tammy Sue Annis of Indiana; two brothers, William D. Spivey of Delaware and Frankie Spivey of Florida; four grandchildren, Anna Ungerer, Jeremiah A. Chance, James A. Chance Jr. and Sherri Saunder; and five and a half great-grandchildren.

Burial was in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park Dover.

Sharon Kaye ‘Katie’ Clokey

Graveside services for Sharon Kay “Katie” Clokey, 53, of Dover will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, with Pastor Harry Harris Jr. officiating. Ms. Clokey died after a short but courageous battle with melanoma Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2004.

Mrs. Clokey was born Dec. 15, 1950, in Aurora, Mo., daughter of the late Delbert and Vada Fugitt.

She moved to Delaware in 1968 after the death of her parents. She met and married her former husband, William Earl Clokey, in 1972.

Mrs. Clokey attended Worship Christian Center until her recent illness, where she received the increased faith and unconditional love of her pastor and church family that gave her the strength to carry on at a most difficult time in her life. She had a special way that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her.

She is survived by three sons, Michael William Clokey and Christopher Scott Clokey, both of Sacramento, Calif., and Oran Clokey of Magnolia; a sister and best friend, Thelma Lou Cruise, with whom she lived; and a brother, Larry Dean Fugitt and his fiancé Wanda Long of Davenport, Iowa.

Mrs. Clokey also is survived by six grandchildren, Avery Josef Clokey of Dover, Angila Marie Kay Clokey, Bryana Isabel Estell Clokey, and Callie Jordyn Clokey, all of Magnolia, Jazmine Rose Clokey of New York, N.Y., and Grace Ann Clokey of Sacramento; and many special neighbors and friends.

Arrangements were by Torbert Funeral Chapels, Dover.

Robert R. Devlin

Remembrance services for Robert R. Devlin, 73, of Viola will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6. Mr. Devlin died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at home with family members present.

Mr. Devlin was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Mineral Point, Pa., son of the late Bert Weldon and Margaret Frye Devlin.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, later working at Kraft General Foods from 1968 until retiring in 1993.

Mr. Devlin enjoyed going on cruises with his wife, and some of their favorite places were Alaska and Hawaii. He was a devoted NASCAR fan and enjoyed collecting memorabilia. He also enjoyed gardening and working in the yard and on his home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Gregory Devlin and Barry Devlin; and a brother, Dennis Devlin.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen Devlin of Viola; a daughter, Deborah Devlin of Felton; two brothers, Daniel Devlin of Makelume Hill, Calif., and David Devlin of Mineral Point, Pa.; and two sisters, Diane Ley of Johnstown, Pa., and Donna Sanderson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Compassionate Care Hospice, 5610 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Master Sgt. Peter Halfen Jr., USAF (Ret.)

Committal services with full military honors for Peter Halfen Jr., 82, of Camden-Wyoming, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. Mr. Halfen died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia.

Mr. Halfen was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Wilmington, son of the late Peter and Florence Kelly Halfen.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Halfen retired with the rank of master sergeant. He was a member of the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge and the Camden Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a friend to the Amish community and would often provide transportation.

Mr. Halfen is survived by his wife, Berniece Hodges-Halfen; two sons, Peter Halfen of Memphis, Tenn., and Michael Halfen of Bolder, Colo.; and two daughters, Mary Ruth Robertson of Wisconsin and Martha Halfen of Alabama.

He also is survived by four brothers, Bill Halfen of Sykesville, Md., John Halfen of Dover, Ralph Halfen of Cinamuson, N.J. and Harry Halfen of Houston; a sister, Catherine Morgan of Lincoln; three stepchildren, Brenda Hiott of Wyoming, Randy Hodges of Felton and Dale Hodges of Winder, Ga.; a godson, Paul Kates of Bear; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.

Gary Windell Hodnett III

Graveside services for Gary Windell Hodnett III, 14 days, were held Monday, Oct. 4, in the Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. Gary died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark.

Gary was born Sept. 16, 2004, in Christiana Hospital.

He is survived by his father, Gary W. Hodnett II of Washington; his mother, Shakeya V. King of Dover; his two sisters, Yasmine B. Rowley and Jaiviauna N. Rowley of Dover; his paternal grandparents, Gary and Deborah Hodnett of Washington; paternal great-grandparents, Charles and Mabel Hodnett of Danville, Va.; two paternal uncles, Jordan M. Hodnett and Brandon C. Hodnett, both of Washington; his maternal grandparents, Vincent and Delores Hazzard of Viola; maternal aunts and uncles, Bruce and Shenica Pitts of Harrington, Lavar King of Dover and Shenay Evans of Viola; and a host of cousins.

Arrangements were by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

Victor Ray Lawson

Victor Ray Lawson, 84, of Felton, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in his home.

Mr. Lawson was born March 19, 1920, in Lee County, Va., son of the late John T. and Fedora Fleener Lawson.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army infantry as a technical sergeant and was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal.

He was employed as a construction and finish carpenter for the Carpenters Union, working and living in Ocean City and Maryland most of his life.

Mr. Lawson was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Maryland.

He is survived by two daughters, Victoria Lawson of Felton, and Kathy R. Lawson of Oak Orchard; a son, John Thomas Lawson of Parkton, Md.; and a stepdaughter, Donna Carroll.

He also is survived by two brothers, Odell Lawson and Worley Lawson; two sisters, Jane Hensley and Vidie Rodgers; six grandchildren, Eric, Rodney, Ryan, Amber, Rachael, and Ronnie; and six great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters.

Memorial services will be held later.

Richard Wilson Lewis

Richard Wilson Lewis, 81, of Dover, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mr. Lewis was born March 29, 1923 in Hazelton, Pa., son of the late David Richard and Geneva Oswald Lewis.

He served during World War II as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps; he retired in 1972 after 31 years as a civil service employee.

Mr. Lewis was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Bradenton, Fla.; a life member and, in 1957, state commander of the Disabled American Veterans in Baltimore; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; a member of the American Legion Post 166 in Ocean City, Md.; the Palestine Lodge 189 in Catonsville, Md.; the Sahib Temple in Sarasota, Fla.; and the Scottish Rite in Baltimore.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Lewis.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Koch Lewis of Dover; two sons, David R. and Ronald K. Lewis, both of Baltimore; four grandsons, Jason, Keith, Matthew and Eric Lewis, all of Baltimore; a granddaughter, Sarah Long of Baltimore; and a sister, Eleanor Johnson of Laguna Beach, Calif.

Memorial services were private.

Anne Markowitz

Graveside services for Anne Markowitz, 91, of Felton were held Sunday, Oct. 3, in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. Mrs. Markowitz died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, in Union Hospital, Elkton, Md.

Mrs. Markowitz was born in London, England and came to the United States as a young child.

She grew up and attended school in Philadelphia and New York.

As a young woman, Mrs. Markowitz was employed as a milliner. She moved to a farm in Felton after marrying her husband, Solomon. She canned fruits and vegetables that she grew in her garden, and cultivated the flowers and plants that adorned her home.

Mrs. Markowitz’ greatest joy was her three daughters. She was a loving and nurturing mother who participated in everything her children did.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon Markowitz; a sister, Lilly; and a brother, Sydney.

She is survived by three daughters, Marian Lieberman, Faye Markowitz, and Phyllis Brenner; and five grandchildren, Aaron, David, Jacob, Daniel, and Jennifer.

Arrangements were by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.
