Funeral services for Lucius McNairy Dickson, 78, of Columbia, Md., were held Saturday, Feb. 16, in Highland, Md. Mr. Dickson died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008.
Mr. Dickson was born July 19, 1929, in Mineral Wells, Miss., son of Lucius McNairy Dickson Sr. and LaDelle Ingram.
He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1943, and graduated from Central High School in 1947.
Mr. Dickson served on active duty from 1951 to 1953 in the 1st Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas, and the 7th Division in Korea. He was in the active reserves from 1953 to 1956 and was discharged from the Army as a sergeant 1st class.
He attended Montgomery Junior College and graduated from American University with a degree in business administration. He worked as a commercial lending officer at American Security Bank in Washington, D.C., before retiring in 1988.
He married Joanne Holt in Dover April 30, 1955. They lived in Beltsville for 36 years before moving to Columbia. While in Beltsville, Mr. Dickson served as president of the Calverton Citizens Association in 1979 and was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
He had recently served as treasurer of Central Alumni Association.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dickson is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Deanne and Matthew Yetman of Brookeville and their four children, Zhenia, Alex, Victoria Grace and Christian, and Suzanne and Skip Mead of Bowie and their three children, Shari, Mariah and CJ; his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Mary Dickson of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Mildred Friends of Norfolk, Va.; and a step-sister and her husband, Winnie and Charles Yarger of Chapel Hill, N.C.
Funeral services for Velma Almeta Evans-Wayman, 57, of Dover, will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover, where friends may call two hours before. Mrs. Evans-Wayman died following a long illness Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Evans-Wayman was born June 11, 1950, in Dover, daughter of the late James Edgar and Helen Evans.
She is survived by her four children, Benita Evans of Wilmington, Robert Wayman Jr. of Bridgeville and Katina Wayman and Randal Wayman, both of Dover; two sisters, Mary Mosley of Cheswold and Audrey Evans of Camden; and a brother, Edgar Evans Jr.
Mrs. Evans-Wayman also is survived by seven grandchildren, Donald Amir De'Shawn Wayman, Shanice La'Kie Wayman, Lauren Nicole Wayman, all of Dover and Tyre Wayman of Magnolia, Jaki Wayman, Jakira Wayman and Randaja Wayman of Dover; six sisters-in-law and a long time companion, William Jones-Bey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services for Elva Bowers Forshey, 96, of Marydel, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior. Mrs. Forshey died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, in Westminster Village Nursing Home, Dover.
Mrs. Forshey was born Nov. 28, 1911, in Altoona, Pa., daughter of the late Robert Bowers and Tresa Price Bowers.
Mrs. Forshey was primarily a homemaker, and had worked at Green Giant in Woodside.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two daughters and a son-in-law, Janette and Michael Cheslock, and Naomi Forshey; and two sons, Charles Forshey and Michael Forshey.
Mrs. Forshey is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Dee Forshey of Fayetteville, N.C.; and two daughters-in-law, Janet Forshey of Magnolia, and Bertha Forshey of Magnolia.
She also is survived by four grandsons, Michael J. Cheslock III and wife Barbara of Marydel, Dennis Cheslock of Magnolia, Steve Forshey and wife Ann of Wyoming, and Gene Forshey Jr. and his wife of Fayetteville; five granddaughters, Janice Pendleton and husband John of Marydel, Charlotte Clark of Magnolia, Chrissy Tayner and husband of Fayetteville, Kimbely Rodan and husband Larry of Fayetteville and Carla Goodman of Delaware; four step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
Michael Joseph Iplenski
Michael Joseph Iplenski, 40, of Dover, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008.
Mr. Iplenski was born July 10, 1967, in Hartly, son of Stanley J. Iplenski Sr. and Jane Eleanor Iplenski.
A carpenter by trade, Mr. Iplenski enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, gardening and time spent with his loving children and family.
He is survived by his wife, Krista Iplenski of Dover; three sons, Joseph Iplenski and John Iplenski, both of Hartly and Christopher Iplenski of Dover; a daughter, Emily Iplenski of Dover; a stepson, Tyler Morris of Dover; and his first wife, Genny Iplenski, the mother of Joseph and John.
Mr. Iplenski also is survived by his father, Stanley J. Iplenski Sr., of Hartly; his mother, Jane Eleanor Iplenski Kazimir and his stepfather, Larry Kazimir, of Bowers Beach; two brothers, Mark Iplenski of Dover and David Iplenski of Hartly; and three sisters, Gina Zimmerman of Oklahoma, Karen Iplenski of Maryland and Holly Iplenski of Philadelphia.
Funeral services for Mary Ellen Jenkins, 77, of Dover, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Mrs. Jenkins died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Jenkins was born Oct. 8, 1930, in Smyrna, daughter of the late Alfred M. Shane Sr. and Emma Bailey Shane.
She worked for the Capital School District in food services until she retired in 2002. She enjoyed taking care of her home, working in the yard and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Shane; and a brother-in-law, Toby Johnson.
Mrs. Jenkins is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Robert P. Jenkins; a daughter, Karen Jenkins and her fiancé John A. Diaz, with whom she lived; four brothers and two sisters, Alfred M. Shane Jr. and his wife Doris, Betty J. Blanchfield and her husband Austin, Jean Johnson, Donald Shane and his wife Mary, all of Smyrna, Douglas Shane and his wife Sandy of Clayton, and Larry Shane and his wife Harriet of Smyrna; and their beloved cat, “Rocky.”

Lougonda Sue Johns
Memorial services for Lougonda Sue Johns, 57, of Dover, were held Friday, Feb. 15, in the Calvary Church of Nazarene, Dover. Mrs. Johns died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Johns was born July 11, 1950, in Chestertown, Md., daughter of Margie Wenk and the late Joseph Hamilton.
She moved to Dover, working for Delaware Electric Signal for more than 20 years until her retirement due to illness.
In her spare time, she enjoyed playing her music, cards, and helping others with problems and opinions.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Johns is survived by her husband of 30 years, Charles W. Johns; a daughter, Dottie Hamilton; a son, Brian Chamberlain; and two grandchildren, Leticia Hamilton and Joseph Smith.
She also is survived by four sisters, Margie Hover, Brenda Battagalia, Gloria Miller of Maryland, and Algene Hamilton of New Mexico; three brothers, Lee Price, Duane Smith of Maryland, and Joseph Smith of Dover; a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and a very devoted friend and boss, Tony Abbott.

Mary Downes Cook Knoll
Funeral services for Mary Downes Cook Knoll, 92, of Dover, formerly of Silver Spring, Md., were held Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Moore Funeral Home, Denton, Md. Mrs. Knoll died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, in Silver Lake Center, Dover.
Mrs. Knoll was born April 14, 1915, in Queen Anne’s County, Md., daughter of the late Marshall Bailey Downes and Mary Sparks Downes.
She attended public school in Queen Anne’s County and graduated from Maryland General School of Nursing in Baltimore as a registered nurse in 1936. She served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps from 1936 to 1941. Among her patients in Walter Reed Army Hospital was Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing.
On Dec. 7, 1941, she married U.S. Army Air Forces Lt. Bailey C. Cook in Puerto Rico and was a devoted spouse until his death in 1957.
Mrs. Knoll was a special duty nurse at Union Memorial Hospital and Greater Baltimore Medical Center from 1957 until 1978.
She married retired Air Force Col. Helmut J. Knoll in 1978, living in Virginia and Maryland.
Mrs. Knoll loved flowers, gardening and was an avid golfer. She especially enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States and Europe and had a great love of family.
She was a member of the Inter-Faith Chapel at Leisure World in Silver Spring.
Mrs. Knoll is listed in the Registry for Women in the Military Service for America in Arlington, Va.
Mrs. Knoll is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, James Albert and Phyllis Downes of Timonium, Md.; a sister, Helen Downes Painton of Towson, Md.; five nephews, James Downes of Centreville, Md., Bennett Downes of Dover, Ray Murray of San Francisco, Peter Downes of Timonium, and Michael Downes of Bethany Beach; four nieces, Mary Frances Brandin of Mercer Island, Wash., Barbara Haroz of Shirley, Mass., Ann Murray of Baltimore, Carolyn Mullen of Seaford; and three stepchildren, Susan Knipp of Churchville, Va., Barbara Wilson of Hardy, Va., and Stephen Knoll of Pacific Grove, Calif.; 13 great-nieces and -nephews and seven great-great-nieces and -nephews.
