Donald Lee 'DD' Dixon Sr., 52
CLAYTON - Donald Lee "DD" Dixon Sr. of Clayton died of natural causes Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover. He was 52.
Mr. Dixon was born March 6, 1950, son of the late Toussaint and Beulah Dixon, who had lived in Kenton.
He attended Kenton School, and later attended William Henry High School in Dover.
Mr. Dixon was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1969 to 1971, including a tour of duty in Vietnam during the war. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant (pay grade E-5).
He was employed by the state of Delaware correctional facility near Smyrna for 26 years.
Mr. Dixon was an avid hunter and a good fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma Benson and Dorothy Hicks.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Dixon Jr. and Melba Dixon; a daughter and son-in-law, Donita and Abdula Drummond; a stepson, Gregory Demby Sr.; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Cornelius and Arnita Robinson and James and Tonia Dixon; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Thelma and Clarence Hicks, Beulah Powell and Catherine and Arnold Mosley; two grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Aishaya Dixon and Ainya Drummond; two step-grandchildren, Ahjalah Demby and Gregory Demby Jr.; two very close friends, Richard "Ricky" Wilson, whom he called "P" for "his partner," and Robert "Fuzzy" Watson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover.
Services will be noon Wednesday in Calvary Baptist Church on Fulton Street in Dover, where friends also may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
Marguerite Caroline (Messick) Layton, 84
WILMINGTON - Marguerite Caroline (Messick) Layton of Wilmington died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wilmington. She was 84.
Mrs. Layton was the first daughter of the late Ura and Bertha (Workman) Messick. She lived most of her childhood in Harrington.
She married Lawson L. Layton Dec. 24, 1939, in Harrington, and later became a resident of the Wilmington area for most of her adult life.
She loved needlework, knitting and crocheting as a relaxing hobby. She was a good cook and devoted herself to homemaking and caring for her husband and son. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly.
Mrs. Layton attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and was a member of Mid-County Senior Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an older brother, Chauncey E. Messick.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry L. and Carol S. Layton of Forest Hill, Md.; a sister, Ruth Crussell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Lance L. Layton of Wilmington and Wendy Jett of Bel Air, Md.; and three great-grandchildren, Caitlin Layton and Kyle Layton, both of Wilmington, and Colin Jett of Bel Air.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads, Wilmington.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.
Thomas Vincent O'Bryan, 58
HARRINGTON - Thomas Vincent O'Bryan of Harrington died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 58.
Mr. O'Bryan was born Nov. 18, 1944, in Corning, N.Y., son of the late Vincent Thomas O'Bryan and Shirley Loraine Fulkerson.
He graduated in 1964 from East High School, where he played football and was a member of the Roadsters Club.
Mr. O'Bryan served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, and moved to Delaware in 1980 after 23 years of service.
He also served as fire chief of Pemberton, N.J., and Emerado, N.D., volunteer fire companies. After retirement, he worked at the Delaware Agricultural Museum as a maintenance technician for seven years.
Mr. O'Bryan was a member of the Delmarva Driving Club and the Harrington Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a pony enthusiast and loved the Delaware State Fair.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Nan O'Bryan, in 2000.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Vincent "Toby" and Nina O'Bryan of Dover and Robert T. and Valerie O'Bryan of Harrington; a sister, Ann Hicks of Glen Allen, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Taylor of Milford; a brother-in-law and his wife, Theodore Nelson II and Lisa Parmly of Bridgeville; three nephews and their wives, Chris and Amy Carmon of Glen Allen, Chuck and Natalie Taylor of Boston and Jordon Parmly of Bridgeville; two nieces, Miranda of New Jersey and Caitlyn of Delaware; his father-in-law, Theodore Nelson Parmly of Milford; two great-nephews, Antwon and Jonathon Carman; and his adopted grandchildren, Jeffery Sullivan,Jessica Sullivan, Jay R. Moore, Savannah Coker and Cheyene Coker.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Richard Scott Outten Jr., Infant
CLARKSVILLE - Richard Scott Outten Jr. of Clarksville died of a lung infection Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was an infant.
Richard was born Dec. 30, 2002, in Christiana Hospital, son of Nicole Daniell Brinker of Clarksville and Richard Scott Outten of Seaford.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Bonnie and Robert J. Brinker Sr., both of Clarksville; maternal grandmother, Hazel Brinker of Illinois; paternal grandparents, Barbara Ann and Richard Harold Outten of Seaford; paternal great-grandparents, Loretta and Ronnie Wooters of Seaford; two half-brothers, Roger Wilson of Laurel and Joshua Brinker of Clarksville; three uncles, Robert J. Brinker Jr. of Frankford and Herman C. Brinker and Dean A. Brinker, both of Clarksville; and two aunts, Stephanie Outten of Seaford and Stacey Outten of Millsboro.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Don Syvertsen will officiate.
Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Ocean View.
Glen E. Serman, 46
DOVER - Glen E. Serman of Dover died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003. He was 46.
Mr. Serman was born March 24, 1956, in Salisbury, Md., son of Roland Serman of Dover and Elma B. (Jones) Serman Allen of Virginia.
He attended Dover High School.
He served in the Army National Guard and worked at C.F. Schwartz Motor Co. in Dover. He also worked for Lee F. Slaughter.
Mr. Serman enjoyed fishing. He was a man of integrity who was a great husband, father and friend to many.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 25 years and his high school sweetheart, Kay Anne Serman of Dover; three sons, Roland Serman of Indiana and Harry D. Cain and Charles L. Cain, both of Dover; a daughter, Glenda Kay Serman of Dover; his stepmother, Marian Serman of Dover; two stepbrothers, Michael Cote and Richard Cote, both of Dover; two sisters, Cindy Tacka and Jackie Taylor, both of Maryland; three stepsisters, Judy Haughton of Dover, Mary Lou Crupper of Hartly and Annette Smith of Dover; and his grandchildren, Patrick, Garrett, Morgan, Caitlyn, Charles Jr., Dillon, Danny P. and Julie Anne.

Gregory A. Short, 49
LEWES - Gregory A. Short of Lewes, formerly of Millsboro died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in his home. He was 49.
Mr. Short was born in Lewes, son of Mildred J. Moore Short and the late John M. Short.
Mr. Short previously worked at the Acme store in Millsboro, Hocker's Grocery in Clarksville and Food Lions in Millsboro, and in Long Neck in the produce departments.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Dallas J. Short of Ephrata, Pa.; a brother, Kenneth L. Short of Mount Carmel, Pa.; a half-brother, Richard L. Short of Seaford; and by his companion, Judy Theuer of Lewes.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Robert A. Hudson will officiate.
Burial will be in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro.
William J. 'Bill' Soukup Sr., 76
HOCKESSIN - William J. "Bill" Soukup Sr. of Hockessin died, after an extended illness, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in the Franciscan Healthcare Center, Hockessin. He was 76.
Mr. Soukup grew up in New York City, and was a fine, accomplished trumpet player, leading the Bill Soukup Band.
He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17, serving for the duration of World War II in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he followed his passion for music as proprietor of the successful South Bay Music store. He worked with Wilmington Piano Co., and later retired as regional sales manager with Chicago Musical Instruments.
Mr. Soukup will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was well-known for his sense of humor.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Reitzes of Dover; four sons, William J. Soukup, John T. Soukup, Thomas G. Soukup and James F. Soukup, all of Newark; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. John Catholic Church, East Main Street, Newark.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Carolyn Wilson Stoner, 77
SEAFORD - Carolyn Wilson Stoner of Seaford died Monday, April 21, 2003, in her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was 77.
Mrs. Stoner was born June 4, 1925, in Salisbury, Md., daughter of the late Royce B. and Belva Wheatley Wilson,
She was an alumna of Hurlock High School and Western Maryland College.
She worked as a translator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and as a substitute teacher, but above all was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.
Mrs. Stoner was an active volunteer leader at National Institutes of Health, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and at St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Daniel Doub Stoner; her son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. J. Brooke and Victoria Willson of Ashland, Va.; her stepdaughter, Susanne Stoner of Hagerstown, Md.; her grandchildren, Brantley and Sarah Willson Craig and Andrew B. Willson all of Charlottesville, Va., and Benjamin T. Willson of Ashland, Va.; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth W. and Richard M. Laws of Salisbury; her nieces and nephews, Cathy W. and Roger Hyneman of Salisbury and Richard and Wendy Laws of Berlin, Md.; and a host of cousins and friends.

Theresa Giordano St.Sauveur, 48
FREDERICA - Theresa Giordano St.Sauveur of Frederica died unexpectedly Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 48.
Mrs. St.Sauveur was born Oct. 22, 1954, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Beatrice Roten and Roy Giordano. She was raised in St. Petersburg, Fla., and made Delaware her home the last 23 years.
She was employed at Betsy Ross and enjoyed working. She was a gifted cook who was very much adored by all who knew her.
She enjoyed crocheting and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed by all who knew and loved her
Mrs. St.Sauveur was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Harrington. She had a deep belief and much faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ, our Savior.
She is survived by her husband of nine years, Norman St.Sauveur; two daughters, Rachel Miller of Frederica and Allyson St.Sauveur of Dover; two brothers, Raymond Striano of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Jerry Politi of Wilder, Ga.; four grandchildren, Sean Skutt, Jeffrey Skutt, Franklin Skutt and Jeasea Skutt; three cousins, Barbara Green, Kimberly Green and Joey Green; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

John Walter Williams Jr., 59
GRASONVILLE, Md. - John Walter Williams Jr. of Grasonville died of natural causes Monday, April 21, 2003, in the Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton. He was 59.
Mr. Williams was born April 13, 1944, in Hayden, son of the late John Williams Sr. and Evelyn Virginia (Hynson) Williams.
He graduated from Kennard High School in Centreville, Class of 1963.
He owned and operated a school bus for Queen Anne's County.
Mr. Williams was a member of St. John A.M.E. Zion Church of Laurel, Del.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan (Groce) Williams; a son, Jonathan D. Williams of Smyrna. Del.; a godson, Timothy Williams of Price; two sisters, Elva Williams of Wilmington, Del., and Charolottie Williams of Price; and a granddaughter, Destini Hope Williams.

Clifford L. Burton, 83
MILLSBORO - Clifford L. Burton, of Millsboro, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro. He was 83.
Mr. Burton was born in Millsboro, son of the late Edward and Mary Holland Burton.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
He was a masonry worker for Shelton F. Taylor Sr. of Millsboro, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Burton was a member of the Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church in Millsboro.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Taylor Burton, in 1965.
He is survived by two sons, Larry J. Taylor Sr. of New Bedford, Mass., and Darryl E. Burton Sr., of Macungie, Pa.; six grandchildren; and a great grandson.

George K. 'Champ' Coverdale, 17
SEAFORD - George K. "Champ" Coverdale, of Seaford, died of heart failure Thursday, April 17, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 17.
George was born June 1, 1985, in Seaford, son of Katrina Smith, of Salisbury, Md., and George Trammell III, of Laurel.
He was a domestic worker.
George was a member of the Mount Calvary A.M.E. in Concord.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, George K. Jr. and Dorothy Trammell, of Seaford, and Rosalie Coverdale, of Seaford; two great-grandparents, Maggie Fletcher, of Georgetown, and Marvell Fletcher, of Dover; his stepfather, Tyrone Smith Sr., of Salisbury, Md.; three brothers, Nicholas K., Joshua K. and Isaiha Trammell, of Seaford; two sisters, Latrina Coverdale, of Salisbury, and Briana Trammell; a stepsister, Teria Smith, of Salisbury; four aunts, an uncle and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Virginia E. Freshwater, 79
SEAFORD - Virginia E. Freshwater, of Seaford, died heart failure Thursday, April 17, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 79.
Mrs. Freshwater was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Seaford.
She was a domestic worker.
Mrs. Freshwater was a member of the Greater Faith Temple Church of God in Christ and a member of the Mother Board, a member of the Pastor Aid and the member of the Kitchen Committee.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Freshwater; three sons, John Freshwater Jr. and Jackson Freshwater, of Seaford, and Melford Freshwater, of Milton; two daughters, Joyce Ann Jackson, of Seaford, and Lucille E. Harmon, of Millsboro; a sister, Junita Watson, of Seaford; a brother, Woolford Fountain, of Philadelphia; a son-in-law, James Harmon, of Millsboro; two daughters, Starr Freshwater, of Milton, and Valerie Freshwater, of Seaford; a nephew, Garland Fountain, of Newark; a niece, Marcia Cannon, of Seaford; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Greater Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Florence Elizabeth Harris, 71
CAMDEN - Florence Elizabeth Harris, of Camden, died Friday, April 18, 2003, in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was 71.
Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Mayberry, W.Va., the only daughter of the late Clarence Cobbs and Bessie Philpot.
In April 1955, Florence married William H. Harris and they began their lives together in Delaware.
She worked in the production department of Swift Inc. for 17 years, and Perdue Farms for 10 years. She retired in 1987.
She enjoyed singing in the choir, cooking and working in the yard.
Mrs. Harris was a faithful member of Zion AME Church, where she was a missionary.
She is survived by her husband of almost 49 years, William H. Harris; her nieces children whom she helped raise, Ronald Harris and Sonya Robinson; two grandsons, Marquais Robinson and DeShawn Harris; three sisters-in-law, Mary Cash, of Smyrna, Virginia Barfield, of Ellendale, Ira Harmon of Lewes; a brother-in-law, Leo Lattimer, of Cleveland; Ohio; a half-brother, William Morrison, of Dover; three cousins, Caroline Witcher, of Columbus, Ohio, Betty Patterson and Rebecca Owes, both of Philadelphia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery, Dover.
Jerome H. Miles, 54
DOVER - Jerome H. Miles, of Dover, died of natural causes Monday, April 21, 2003, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Elsmere. He was 54.
Mr. Miles was born Sept. 24, 1947, in Dover, son of Mary Miles and the late James Albert Barrett.
He attended Booker T. Washington School.
Mr. Miles served in the Army and was discharged in October 1967.
In addition to his mother he is survived by four aunts, Dorthy Miles of Bonnawood, Tenn., Virginia Wright of Dover, Katherine Petty John of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Beatrice Ireland, of Dover; a special friend who kept his spirits up, Trudy Wilson, of Dover; an uncle, James Miles, of Dover; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Second Baptist Church, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.

Caroline Emma Rantz Myers Schmidt, 84
SEAFORD - Caroline Emma Rantz Myers Schmidt, of Seaford, died Monday, April 21, 2003, in her home. She was 84.
Mrs. Schmidt was the youngest of six children born to the late John W. Sr. and Mary Kamp Rantz.
She owned and trained many winning harness horses from Harrington Raceway.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the People Helping People CB Club and a wonderful grandmother to every child she met.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Jess, John Jr. and Wright; a sister, Jeanette Lolli; her first husband, William E. Myers; her second husband, William J. Schmidt Sr.; and a great- granddaughter, Jessica F. Schmidt.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles E. and Debbie Myers, Federalsburg, Md., and William J. "Bud" Schmidt Jr., of Bridgeville; 12 grandchildren, Angie Myers-Miller and Jason Myers, of Seaford, Jennifer Myers, of Federalsburg, Wanda Muse, of Bel Air, Md., Lynn Hignutt, of New Castle, Bruce Schmidt, of Charlotte, N.C., Kim Riddle, of Millsboro, Cathy Rogers, of Laurel, Mike Haman and Tommy Christley, of Bridgeville, Billy Schmidt III ,of Greenwood, and Winter Christley of Seaford; 14 great-grandchildren, Troy Jr. and Haley Miller, Paul Riddle Jr. Sommer Curtis, Nichole and Spensor Ross, Andrew, Alexis, and Dakota Schmidt, Benjamin Messick, Connor and Tyler Muse, Caleb Sellers-Schmidt and Isiaah Jenkins; five adopted grandchildren, Eric, Mark, Kurt, Valerie and Diane Roth; two very special nephews, Franklin and Larry Rantz; and a host of many nieces and nephews.
