Virginia 'Ruth' Horton

Celebration of life services for Virginia “Ruth” Horton, 87, of Dover, formerly of Lincoln, were held Friday, Feb. 23, in Calvary Church of the Nazarene, Dover. Mrs. Horton died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, in Silver Lake Nursing Center, Dover.

Mrs. Horton was born June 28, 1919, in Erie, Pa., daughter of the late Thomas Boyd Sr. and Agnes Oless Boyd.

Mrs. Horton graduated from Academy High School, Erie, and attended Eastern Nazarene College, Quincy, Mass. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1945, then served as the graduate lab assistant for the biology department under her major professor, Dr. Babcock.

She and her husband Ellis served pastorates in McMechan, W.Va.; Washington, Pa.; Coraopolis, Pa.; Dover; Salisbury, Md.; McConnellstown, Pa.; and Broad Top, Pa.

Mrs. Horton worked as a teacher in various capacities in schools in Pennsylvania and Delaware and enjoyed her time working with learning disabled students.

She taught at Christian Tabernacle Academy and served as admissions clerk at Peninsula Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Horton led a very active life up until her stroke and enjoyed volunteering several days a week at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital in the Pre-admission Testing Department, driving her own vehicle and living on her own.

She was the definitive hostess and enjoyed making pies and baked goods to share with her friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed crafts and needlework that she gave as gifts.

Mrs. Horton was a member and faithful parishioner of the Dover Calvary Church of the Nazarene on North Little Creek Road in Dover. She kept many prayer journals and read the Bible through many times throughout her lifetime.

She had a stroke and a heart attack in February 2006, which led to her residence at Silver Lake Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Ellis K. Horton in October 2002.

Mrs. Horton is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Bruce Cale, of Magnolia; a grandson and his wife, Christopher and Laurie Cale, of Dover; a grandson, Ryan Cale, of Magnolia; nieces, nephews, cousins; and her dear friends, Lila May and Norma Jean DeWitt.

Interment was in International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Broad Top City, Pa.Memorial contributions in Mrs. Horton’s name may be made to Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 1818 N. Little Creek Road, Dover, DE 19901.

Frances Mae Postles Johnson

Funeral services for Frances Mae Postles Johnson, 56, of Felton, were held Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Bibleway Temple Church of God in Christ, Dover. Mrs. Johnson died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Johnson was born on April 1, 1950, daughter of the late Arvil and Lucy Carter Postles.

She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School, William Henry High School and graduated from Felton High School.

She was a member of St. James Union African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Johnson began her work years at Swift and Co. until the company was destroyed by fire. She then worked for Perdue, later named ConAgra, until her health began to fail her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Donald Carter; two sisters, Catherine Postles and Irene Pernsley; and a grandson, Ronald Johnson III.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Johnson Sr., whom she married Aug. 9, 1973; two sons, Duane Postles and Ronald Johnson Jr., both of Felton; two granddaughters, Brieanna Meyer and Ronee Johnson, both of Felton; a sister, Clara Pittman, of Frederica; and a brother, Arvil Postles Jr., of Salisbury, Md.

She also is survived by seven sisters-in-law, Delema Carter, of Felton, Mary B. Watson, of Wyoming, Stella Watson and her husband Melvin, of Felton, Sarah Johnson, of Dover, Sylvia Fuller, of Frederica and Francine Johnson, of Wilmington; an aunt, Sadie Green, of Felton; an uncle, Milford Carter, of Frederica; a brother-in-law, Robert Johnson Sr. and his wife Shirley, of Wilmington; a godmother, Frances Mosley, of Felton; a goddaughter, Jocelynn Stewart, of Elkton; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.

Interment was in Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

Dorothy Alberta Summers Lake

Funeral services for Dorothy Alberta Summers Lake, 85, of Felton, were held Saturday, Feb. 24, in Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, Camden. Mrs. Lake died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, in the Milford Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Lake was born May 7, 1921, daughter of the late Lyndon and Annie Summers.

She was affiliated with Emmanuel Pentecostal Church of God, Camden for the past nine years.

Mrs. Lake was born in Kenton, where she attended school through the eighth grade. She started working at a very early age, housecleaning and working in local factories.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late James Roland Lake in 1941. From this union, nine children were born: four sons and five daughters.

Mrs. Lake enjoyed life and was a very hard worker who never liked to miss a day of work. She was a devoted mother and lovingly took care of her nine children. Dorothy was very outspoken and let you know what was on her mind.

She was a devoted member of the Milford Senior Center and did not like to miss one day. If she missed the bus to the center, she would promptly call one of her daughters to come pick her up and take her there.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Roland Lake; a son, Alvin Edward Lake; a sister, Pauline Jackson; and a son-in-law, Sylvester Davis.

Mrs. Lake is survived by eight children, Joyce Lake of Milford, James Lake of Hartford, Conn., Latricia Davis of Milford, Diane Harris and husband Austin of Felton, Janice Warren and husband Willis of Felton, Debbie Bagwell and husband William of Millsboro, Bryant Lake and wife Valerie of Rochester, N.Y., and Ronald Wayne Lake of York, Pa.; 28 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and five close friends, Louella Baines, Lillie Whaley, Myra Jones, Yvonne Graham and Marion Bagwell.

Interment was in the Milford Community Cemetery.

Arrangements were being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford.

Frances E. McIntire

Remembrance services for Frances E. McIntire, 83, of Dover, were held Monday, Feb. 26, in Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mrs. McIntire died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mrs. McIntire was born March 12, 1923, in Smyrna, daughter of the late Harvey and Sadie May Foraker Tucker.

She was a homemaker after her retirement from Playtex.

Mrs. McIntire enjoyed playing bingo and working Word-Find books and just had just recently join the Modern Maturity Center of Dover. She enjoyed being with her lady friends, country rides seeing family members and spending time reminiscing about old times.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. McIntire; a brother, Harvey Jr.; and three sisters, Idella Everett, Mary Louise Tucker and Minnie Casper.

Mrs. McIntire is survived by four sons, David F. Tucker, of Wilmington, William E. Clough Jr., of Felton, Cecil Ray Tucker, of Harbson, Md. and George C. Grace, of Dover; five daughters, Elise L. Dear, of Dover, Doris M. Slater, of Felton, Elizabeth A. Burk, of Dover and Barbara J. Clough and Peggy L. Netson, both of Felton.

She also is survived by two brothers, Paul Tucker and Ben Tucker, both of Dover; a sister, Betty Powell, of Dover; 19 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Glenn Wood Cemetery, Smyrna.

Adam E. Miller

Funeral services for Adam E. Miller, 84, of Hartly, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the residence of John M. Miller, Yoder Drive, Dover. Mr. Miller died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, in his home.

Mr. Miller was born Nov. 30, 1922, in Middlefield, Ohio, son of the late Eli and Anna Byler Miller.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth D. Miller.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Alta Mast Miller; and 12 children, Allen Miller, William Ray Miller, David Miller, Adam A. Miller Jr., Polly Mae King, Saloma Byler, Elizabeth Ann Byler and Kathryn Byler, all of Dover, Lena Bontrager and Lydia Byler, both of Kentucky, Mary Ann Beachy, of Tennessee and Samuel Miller, of South Carolina.

He also is survived by 94 grandchildren; 227 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Samuel E. Miller, of Ohio, and William E. and Mahlon E. Miller, of Delaware; two sisters, Anna Detweiler, of Kentucky and Lydia Byler, of Illinois; and six stepchildren, Melvin E. Miller, of Wyoming, Edward E. Miller, of Townsend, Raymond E. Miller, John E. Miller and Jacob A. Miller, all of Dover and Cora Mae Miller, of Wyoming.

Interment will be in the Amish Cemetery, Dover.

Arrangements are by the Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.

Joyce M. Paluck

Memorial services for Joyce M. Paluck, 88, of Dover, formerly of Elizabeth, N.J., will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier. Mrs. Paluck died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, in her home.

Mrs. Paluck was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Linden, N.J., daughter of the late Auggie and Caroline MacDonald.

She enjoyed watching game shows, doing crossword puzzles, reading romance novels, and playing Kismet and bingo. She also greatly enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Paluck, on Jan. 27, 1997; three sons, Elmer Henriksen, George Henriksen and James Henriksen; two daughters-in-law, Pat Henriksen and Debbie Henriksen; two grandsons, Douglas Henriksen and Skippy Aukamp; and her kitty, Baby.

Mrs. Paluck is survived by six daughters, Patricia Messinger and her fiancé Keith Budler, of Dover, Joyce Chaudruc, of New Jersey, Carol Craney and Mary Hodes, both of South Carolina, Marris Lang, of Florida, and the Rev. Margaret Long, of New Hampshire; and three sons, William Henriksen and Bruce Henriksen, both of New Jersey and Kenneth Henriksen, of Pennsylvania.

She also is survived by a son-in-law, George Messinger, of Ohio; a brother, Allen MacDonald, of New Jersey; and her grandchildren, George and Filomena Messinger, of Dover, James and Nancy Messinger, of Bear, Trish and Heath Nixon, of Dover, Gary and Sirena Messinger, of Milford, Willie Mills, Eddie Mills and Juliana Henriksen, all of New Jersey, Vinnie Gervasi, of Pennsylvania, Kenneth Henriksen, of New Jersey, Louis Henriksen, of South Carolina, and Peggy Lynn Henriksen and Sandra Henriksen, both of Florida.

In addition, Mrs. Paluck is survived by her great-grandchildren, Maritza Messinger, George Messinger, Allen Messinger, Amethyst Messinger, Amber Messinger, Alexandria Osborne, Seth Thomas, Kristina Messinger, Timmy Messinger, Dale Messinger, Skyler Stoner, and Grace Mills; her childhood friend from third grade, Vivian Roberts, of Florida; a very dear and special family friend, Steven Pappetti, of New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, additional family and friends.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Paluck’s name may be made to any veteran’s organization.

Maureen Lefort Pearthree

Funeral services for Maureen Lefort Pearthree, 75, of Seminole, Fla., formerly of Dover, were held Feb. 24, in the E. James Reese Funeral Home, Seminole. Mrs. Pearthree died suddenly Feb. 19, 2007, in Largo Medical Center, Fla.

Mrs. Pearthree was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Plymouth, U.K., daughter of the late Leonard and Ivy Collier.

She moved to the United States following her marriage to Harold G. Lefort, her beloved husband and the father of her four sons.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and friend. She was an avid bridge player and loved to knit and crochet. She loved traveling to England to visit relatives and friends whenever she could.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pearthree was preceded in death by her first husband, and her brother, Harold Collier, of Plymouth.

She is survived by her second husband, Frank Pearthree; four sons and their wives, Wayne and Dana Lefort, of Dover, Robert and Jennifer Lefort, of Largo, Donald and Nancy Lefort, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Rick and Rebecca Lefort, of Tampa.

Mrs. Pearthree also is survived by 11 grandchildren, Eric Lefort, of Harrington, Aaron Lefort and Jennifer Sommer Lefort, of Riverview, Fla., Mathew and Sean Lefort, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Olivia Gavin, of Largo, Nichole, Alexander and Nicholas Lefort, of Melbourne Beach, and Kade Lefort and Dakota Wilson of Tampa; three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Andrew and Jake Lefort, of Harrington, two nieces, Sarah Avery, of Plymouth and Julie Spencer, of Bath, U.K.; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Collier, of Plymouth.

A private interment is planned for a later date.
