CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Thomas Leon Brown of Chestertown died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in his home. He was 72.
Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Emmamuel United Methodist Church in Pomona, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Asbury United Church Cemetery, Georgetown. The Rev. G. Matthew will officiate.

Frances M. Callaghan, 54
REHOBOTH BEACH - Frances M. Callaghan of Rehoboth Beach died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. Mrs. Callaghan was formerly from Brooklyn, N.Y. She was 54.
She had been employed as a secretary for the New York Telephone Co. for 15 years.
Mrs. Callaghan was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, where she had been a CCD teacher for 10 years. She also was a member of St. Edmonds Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach, where she had taught CCD classes for a short time. She was a past president of the Columbiaettes and a past president of the parent association for Bishop Ford High School.
Mrs. Callaghan is survived by her husband, Patrick Callaghan of Rehoboth Beach: two children; James and Patricia, both at home; and a sister, Joann of Washington State.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles and Laurel streets, Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will follow at Henlopen Memorial Park, near Milton.
Instead of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Renal Dialysis Center at Beebe Medical Center, Savannah Road, Lewes DE 19958.

Hubert Carliles, 79
CLAYTON - Hubert Carliles of Clayton died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in his home. He was 79.
Mr. Carliles was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Holmes County, Fla., son of the late William Lambert Carliles and Willie Cooper Carliles.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, he worked as a machinist and foreman for Spearamint Brewery Co. in Pensacola, Fla., and then as a forklift operator for Hogan & Son in Vero Beach, Fla., retiring in 1978.
Mr. Carliles volunteered his civic duty at the Pensacola Police Department for many years. He also loved fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Anna Steele Carliles; a son, David J. Carliles of Clayton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally S. and Frank Celatka of Clayton; and three grandchildren, Erica, Danielle and Gabrielle Celatka, all of Clayton.
Services will be noon Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

John C. Green Sr., 76
SEAFORD - John C. Green Sr. of Seaford died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 76.
Mr. Green moved to Seaford in 1998. Prior to that he had lived in Grasonville, Md., and Rockville, Md.
He Retired From Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Annapolis.
Mr. Green was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donnette Green, in 1994; and his daughter, Donnette Birmingham, in 2001.
He is survived by his son, John C. Green Jr. of Millersville, Md.; and a daughter, Peg Green of Seaford.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford.
Burial will be 1:30 p.m. in Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville Pike and Randolph Roads, Rockville.

Michael Darnell Harris, 37
DOVER - Michael Darnell Harris died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 37.
Mr. Harris was born April 5, 1965, in Dover, son of Betty Harris of New York and the late Lester Wright.
He attended school in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1983.
He loved basketball and loved to run track. He also loved to cook and lay concrete. He was a very funny person and loved doing crazy and wild things. He was a loving father and friend.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Burton.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his dearest wife, Bertha Harris of Dover; a son, Michael D. Evans of Dover; two stepsons, Hakeen Adkison and Rasheem Adkison, both of Dover; a stepdaughter, Shayla Jackson of Dover; 11 sisters, Carolyn Harris of Allentown, Pa., Theresa Harris of Philadelphia, Evelyn Scott of Ridgeland, S.C., Elaine Daley of New Burn, N.C., Charmaine Hick of Dover, Tasha Harris, Tina Harris, Kathy Harris, DeeDee Harris, Sheila Harris and Michelle Harris, all of Rochester, N.Y.; six brothers, Calvin Harris and Toney Harris, both of New Burn, Darnell Doverdale and Carlton Wynn, both of Dover, Eric Washington of Ridgeland and Derrick Washington of Australia; a devoted aunt, Mary Jane Jones; five foster sisters, Wanda Pierce, Ida Waters, Cynthia Burris, Ebony Bessix and Pearl Harmon; a foster brother, Bennie Waters; a foster mother, Mrs. Ruth Bessix of Dover; a loving goddaughter, Diamond King of Dover; two foster brothers, Lester Lee and Fred Burris; seven sisters-in-law; nine brothers-in-law; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Susan H. Hiscox, 63
HARTLY - Susan H. Hiscox of Hartly died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 63.
Mrs. Hiscox was born May 31, 1939, in Salem, N.J., daughter of Lucy Garrett of Hartly and the late father Abner B. Hall.
She worked for the state of Delaware at the governor's house during the du Pont and Castle administrations. She later enjoyed life as a devoted wife and homemaker.
She had a great love for her pets, a dog and five cats. She enjoyed the outdoors and especially crabbing with her husband.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Willie F. Garrett, Jan. 7, 2000; a brother, George A. Hall; a sister, Shelly Virginia Hart; and a father-in-law, Ernest W. Hiscox Sr.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 18 years, David Hiscox; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jarrett F. "Jack" and Diane Garrett of Elizabethton, Tenn., William D. "Sonny" and Cindy Garrett of Houston, Louis R. and Emily Garrett of Bear and Charles Glen and Mary Ann Garrett of Dover; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Shirley and Robert Friend of Essex, Md., Rae Teel of Odessa and Mary and Gil Reed of Middletown; mother-in-law, Clara Hiscox of Harrington; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Randall and Katie Hart of Dover, Ernest W. Jr. and Beri Hiscox of Billerica, Mass., and Thomas and Cass Hiscox of Holland, Pa.; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Ruth and Bruce "Turk" Tkachuk of Harrington.
Services will be 8 p.m. Monday in Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Alvin W. Hudson, 88
CLARKSVILLE - Alvin W. Hudson of Clarksville died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in his home. He was 88.
Mr. Hudson was the son of the late Lynn Hudson and Mattie West Hudson.
He was a retired poultry farmer.
Mr. Hudson was a member and elder of Ocean View Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Hal Leroy Hudson, in 1983.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Ellen Hudson; a daughter-in-law, Janet Hudson of Greenwood, Ind.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Monday in Ocean View Church of Christ in Ocean View, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Millville Cemetery.

Robert Stanley Ficon, 48
DOVER - Robert Stanley Ficon of Dover died Monday, April 23, 2001, in his home. He was 48.
Mr. Ficon was born Aug. 2, 1952, in Patterson, N.J., son of Joan Robinette Ficon of Dover and the late Stanley Ficon.
He graduated from Middletown High School in 1970, received his B.A. from Hofstra University in 1974 and a master of arts at New York State University.
He was a teacher for 10 years before his retirement in 1984, due to a long illness.
Mr. Ficon had lived in Dover since November 1989, and was previously from Middletown, N.J.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Barbara Lodes of Boothwyn, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Michael Lodes of Boothwyn; and a nephew, Harry Lodes of Boothwyn.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home Inc., Middletown, N.J.
Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Fair View Cemetery in Middletown, N.J.

Edythe Desper Gum, 93
SEAFORD - Edythe Desper Gum of Seaford died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Life Care at Lofland Park in Seaford. She was 93.
Mrs. Gum was born May 20, 1907, in Augusta County, Va., daughter of the late Joseph Edward "Ed" Desper and Margaret "Maggie" Fix Desper.
She was educated in Virginia, where she obtained a teaching degree in the mid-1920s from Madison College, now James Madison University. She taught in the Augusta County schools for 14 years at Centerville, Deerfield and Clay Hill schools in Virginia, and served 31 more years as a fourth-grade teacher in the Seaford School system prior to her retirement.
In November 1938, she married Clyde E. "Pete" Gum. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Seaford, where Mr. Gum was instrumental in the development and construction of the Seaford DuPont plant.
Mr. and Mrs. Gum were former owners of the prominent Shadow Mountain Farm in West Augusta, Va. They also owned a 257-acre hunting retreat along the Nanticoke River near Seaford, a property that was sold to the state of Delaware upon Mr. Gum's death and is now dedicated as the Pete Gum Memorial Preserve.
She will be remembered by her students as "the best teacher they ever had" as well as by her only remaining "teaching buddy" in Virginia, Clarice Armstrong of Deerfield.
Mrs. Gum was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Seaford, and also the longest serving member of the Seaford chapter of the American Association of University Women.
In addition to her husband, who died June 28, 1988, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Nettie (Desper) Lawrence; two brothers, George A. Desper and Sherwood W. Desper; and three nephews, M. Douglas Lawrence, Rev. Robert H. Lawrence and J. Stuart Desper. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Desper Peters of Craigsville, Va., and Jean Gum Lightner of Churchville, Va.; two nephews, David W. Desper of Stunton, Va., and Wayne E. Desper of Stuarts Draft, Va.; her nurse and companion, Betty Musgrove, who along with her husband, the Rev. Wayne Musgrove cared diligently for 14 years; devoted caregivers, Gerry Thomas, and her son, Robin, all of whom greatly enhanced her quality of life; and a few nephews and nieces on her husband's side.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Green Hill Cemetery, Churchville, where the Rev. Ralph Grow of St. James United Methodist Church will officiate.
The family suggests memorial contribution may be made to Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 315 High St., Seaford, DE 19973.

Sheila Ann Harmon, 41
DOVER - Sheila Ann Harmon of Dover died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. She was 41.
Mrs. Harmon was born Feb. 19, 1960, daughter of Philip and Evelyn Dixon Jr. of Dover.
She graduated from Dover High School.
She was a very loving and devoted mother and wife who took special and personal care of her children and husband. During her illness she never complained. During the entire time of her illness until the end she continued to give God all the praise.
Mrs. Harmon was a member of Emmanuel A.M.E. Church. She served her church from her childhood until her Illness prevented her from participating. She was a faithful member of Emmanuel. Her past activities and affiliations included being a parent-student at First Step Training of Delaware, church school teacher, president of R.A.Y.C, a member of the Y.P.D., a member of the parents' club, volunteer at East Elementary School, a member of the Christian of Education Department, craft teacher of Vacation Bible School and a member of the voices and women's choir of Emmanuel.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jay W. Harmon of Dover; two children, William J. Gibbs and Roteasha R. Gibbs of Dover; her grandparents, Allee and Isabella Watson Sr. of New Castle; two sisters, Cheryl L. Freeman of Dover and Charlotte D. Trower of Smyrna; a brother, Philip S. Dixon of Dover; a mother-in-law, Claudina Harmon of Dover; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; two nieces, Areysha Freeman and Shantel Dixon; three nephews, Brandon and Jeffery Dixon and Trevon Trower; seven aunts; seven uncles; and a host of cousins, family and friends.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church in Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be in Emmanuel A.M.E. Church cemetery.

Harry .E. 'Eddie' Missimer Jr. 27
MIDDLETOWN - Harry .E. "Eddie" Missimer Jr. of Middletown died suddenly Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. He was 27.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Deanna Kay Missimer, in 1970.
He is survived by a daughter, Ariel Missimer of Newark; four sons, Dustin Missimer, Harry E. Missimer III, Harley Missimer and Hunter Missimer, all of Newark; his parents, Harry and Phyllis Missimer of Middletown; a sister, Tracey Missimer; two brothers and their wives, Daniel and Cassandra Missimer and Bryan and Lynn Missimer, all of Middletown; three nieces, Megan Missimer, Brandy Missimer and Kathryn Missimer, all of Middletown; two nephews, Joshua Missimer and Shawn Evans of Middletown, an aunt, Betty Sullivan of Middletown; and many more aunts, uncles and cousins.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Louise Edith Palmer, 75
SEAFORD - Louise Edith Palmer of Seaford died of heart failure Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 75.
Mrs. Palmer was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Seaford.
She was a domestic worker.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of God Covenent Discipleship Church in Laurel and mother of the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Palmer; and three sons, Myron Palmer, Joseph Palmer and Jonathan Palmer.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie E. Palmer and Kathy P. Palmer of Seaford; a godson, Bruce Coverale Sr. of Bridgeville; Wanda Wynn of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Shante' Palmer and La Tonn' Palmer of Seaford; two brothers, Willie Williams Sr. and Robert Williams of Seaford; two sisters, Viola Blockson and Ruth Matthews of Seaford; seven brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call at 7 p.m. Friday at United Deliverance Bible Center, Laurel.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the center. The Bishop Catherine Camper will officiate.

William 'Barry' Smedley, 56
ATLANTA - William "Barry" Smedley of Atlanta died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in his home. He was 56.
Mr. Smedley was born in Chester. Pa., son of Mortimore Smedley Sr. of Bridgeville, Del., and the late Bessie Smedley.
He retired as a U.S. Postal Service worker after 34 years.
In addition to his father, he is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Smedley of Federalsburg, Md., a son, Kevin Smedley of Greenwood; two sisters, Georganna MacFarland of Greenwood and Seann Carey of Seaford; a brother, Mortimore Smedley Jr. of Sebastian, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Dur and Jeffrey Moore Jr. of Federalsburg.

Elizabeth 'Lib' Seymour Stewart, 83
LEWES - Elizabeth "Lib" Seymour Stewart of Lewes died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 83.
Mrs. Stewart was born July 27, 1917, in Lewes, daughter of the late Joseph Clay and Annie Hester Miller Seymour.
She received her early education in the Lewes public school system, and graduated from Delaware State College High School in Dover.
She started her working career at the Children's Beach House, Diamond State Poultry and Sports Craft, and retired from Kraft General Food in 1979.
Mrs. Stewart became a member of St. George AME Church in 1956, and remained devoted until her death, serving as pastor's steward, church secretary, I.B. usher board and Ways & Means Club. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliate, Queen Elizabeth Chapter 13, Milton, since 1949, grand matron of St. Mathew Grand chapter in 1962, and past board member of the Lewes Senior Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Stewart.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine "Kitty" and Bradford Perry of Dover; three grandsons and their wives, Dwaine and Jewell Perry of Crofton, Md., Stevie and Evelyn Perry of Lincoln and Bradford Perry Jr. and Stephanie Perry of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter and her husband, Cindy and John Holmes of Wilmington; a sister, Anna S. Ward of Lewes; and a brother, Joseph E. Seymour of Lewes.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. tonight at St. George AME Church, 317 Park Ave., Lewes, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the church. The Rev. Idola J. Williams will officiate.

Welton Arthur Richardson, 81
WILLARDS, Md. - Welton Arthur Richardson of Willards died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in his home. He was 81.
Mr. Richardson was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Willards, son of the late Harry D. Richardson and Elizabeth Parsons Richardson.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Richardson was a retired farm farmer and broiler grower.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a world of patience.
Mr. Richardson was a member of Eden United Methodist Church in Willards, a life member of Wicomico Lodge 91 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Scottish Rite.
In addition to her parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard D. Richardson in 1976 and Vaughn E. Richardson in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; Allene C. Richardson of Willards; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don E. and Donna Richardson of Salisbury and Sidney T. and Kay Richardson of Willards; two daughters, Betty Lou Kulp, and her companion, Robert Lenhart, of Salisbury, and Iris C. McCabe, and her husband, Michael, of Millsboro, Del., nine grandchildren, Christina Westover, and her husband, John, of Sterling, Va., W. David Kulp III, and his wife, Heather, of Atlanta, Lee Richardson, and his wife, Dana, of Willards, Lisa Morris, and her husband, Tom, of Parsonsburg, Jim Richardson, and his wife, Rhonda, of Willards, Renee Hall, and her husband, Joshua, of Stevensville, Mark Richardson of Salisbury, Jason McCabe and Brandon McCabe, both of Millsboro, Del.; three great-grandchildren, Rebecca Richardson, Cody Morris and Mackenzie Richardson; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mausoleum in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. The Rev. Paul H. Sherwood will officiate.

Maria B. Smith
DOVER - Maria B. Smith of Dover died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in her birthplace, Amelia, Va.
Mrs. Smith received her early education at Big Oak School in Amelia, her secondary education at Ingleside-Fee Memorial Institute in Burkeville, Va., and her post-secondary education at St. Paul Normal and Industrial School at Virginia State College and Delaware State College.
She had been an active businesswoman in the Dover community since 1960, when she moved there. She also founded and operated the Maria Fan-Rebe Beauty Salon.
In addition to her leadership as a cosmetologist, she was an educator and mentor. Early in her life she taught in the Virginia public school system and was later employed as dean of women at Delaware State College. She also was an instructor of cosmetology students.
She was multi-talented, energetic, vibrant and pursued many interests. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, crafts, cooking, canning and preserving. She liked to fish, bowl and cycle when she was younger, and had a gift for raising houseplants and ornamental flowers and shrubs. She traveled extensively with her professional and civic association to visit friends and family, and for the pure sense of adventure. Her passing marks another phase of life lived with dedication, enthusiasm and the quest for the improvement of self and other. The family thanks God for her and for the love she shared with them.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Electra Chapter 6, PHA, Professional Black Women's Association, W.C. Handy Music Club of Whatcoat United Methodist Church and the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW. Although her business was in Dover, she maintained her membership and served on the executive board of the Virginia State Beautician's Association and president of Juliette's A&N State Registered Beautician Chapter.
She is survived by a brother, Maxwell Branch; three sisters, Ethel B. Jones, Shuefeldt B. Dobson and MaryAnn B. Hawkes; a brother-in-law, Maceo Jones; two sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae branch and Nancy W. Branch; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and associates.
Service and burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Hill United Presbyterian Church in Amelia, Va.
