Donald Mihalko, 69
DOVER - Donald Mihalko of Dover died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in his home. He was 69.
Mr. Mihalko was born Nov. 6, 1933, in Troy, N.Y., son of the late Michael Mihalko and Anastasia Prokov Mihalko.
He settled in Delaware after retiring from the military as a supply NCOIC from Dover Air Force Base in 1974, from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also worked for Herr's Potato Chip Co.
He enjoyed fishing, sail boating and going to the horse races.
Mr. Mihalko was a member of Elks Lodge 1903 and the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post 2.
He is survived by a son, Michael Mihalko of Dover; a daughter, Lisa Mihalko of Wilmington; two sisters, Lois Schemal and Mary Halse, both of Watervliet, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.

Leonora Musachio, 92
RIDGELY, Md. - Leonora Musachio of Ridgely died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in her home. She was 92.
Mrs. Musachio was born March 4, 1910, in New York, daughter of the late Paul and Antoinette Badamo. She moved to the Ridgely area from Tuckahoe, N.Y., in 1995.
She was a homemaker. She also helped her husband with operation of their grocery store in Crestwood Market in Tuckahoe.
She is survived by her husband, Michael L. Musachio, who she married on April 19, 1930; her son, Mike Musachio of Ridgely; three daughters, Constance Earl of Pendleton, S.C., Celeste Musachio of Anderson, S.C., and Carol Van Gerve of Collinsville, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Fleegle-Helfenbein Funeral Home, P.A., Greensboro.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Benedicts Catholic Church, Ridgely.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Greensboro.

Richard Arthur Neal Jr., 82
LEWES - Richard Arthur Neal Jr. of Lewes, formerly of Delaware City, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in the home of his son and caretaker. He was 82.
Mr. Neal was born Dec. 19, 1920, in Summit Bridge, son of the late Richard A. Sr. and Della May Stevens Neal.
He graduated from Howard High School in Wilmington.
He joined the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
After his service duty Mr. Neal became employed at Wiltex in Wilmington, where he retired in 1985 as a supervisor after 35 years of service.
He and his wife made their home in Delaware City, where they reared their family.
Mr. Neal was a lifetime member of Old Fort UAME Church in Christiana. He served as janitor, choir member, pastor's steward, trustee and trustee for the conference. He also was a member of the Delaware City American Legion post and the first Negro to serve as a councilman in the city government of Delaware City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Georgeanna Anderson Neal, in 1976; and a son, Norman A. Neal, in October 2002.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard P. and Sandra L. Neal of Lewes and Franklin S. Neal of Denver; three sisters, Lavenia N. Cole and Emma M. Williams of Christiana and Mary E. Cole of Wilmington; and three brothers, the Rev. Paul L. Neal Sr. and the Rev. Delmas P. Neal Sr., both of Christiana, and John W. Neal of Newport.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Israel United Methodist Church, Beaver Dam Road, Five Points, Lewes.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Paul UAME Church, 3114 N. Market St., Wilmington, where friends may also call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Wilmington.

George L. Legates Sr., 64
FELTON - George L. Legates Sr. of Felton died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 64.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Berry Short Funeral Home, Main Street, Felton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
Mabel Rowan, 77
GEORGETOWN - Mabel Rowan of Georgetown died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 77.
Services will be noon Monday in Calvary Baptist Church, 318 S. DuPont Highway, Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Cokesbury Cemetery, Georgetown.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Calvary Baptist Church.
Ruth Virginia Tull Beers, 77
SEAFORD - Ruth Virginia Tull Beers of Seaford died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in Genesis Seaford Center. She was 77.
Mrs. Beers was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Floyd Tull's farmhouse in Seaford, daughter of the late Floyd and Eunice Shockley Tull.
She graduated from Seaford High School in 1943.
She started cadet nurse training at St. Barnabas Hospital in Newark, N.J. in 1944. She became a registered nurse in 1948.
She worked at Eye & Ear Hospital in Newark becoming night supervisor on the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. When Eye & Ear became part of Presbyterian Hospital, she worked in the recovery room. When she and her husband moved from the area, she became head nurse at Applegarth Nursing Home, Monroe Township, N.J. She did private duty nursing for senior citizens where she lived. She retired and built a home on Floyd Tull's farm in 1987.
She enjoyed baking and giving cookies away. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, having been to Hawaii four times, Europe twice, Alaska and various places on the mainland. She enjoyed entertaining, often having open houses.
Mrs. Beers was a member of Seaford Presbyterian Church, RSVP, doing volunteer work in the gift shop at the Methodist Manor House, was a member of the Eastern Star in New Jersey and was responsible for the forming of H Company, 346 Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, World War II veterans mini-reunions, starting in 1957.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert L. Beers whom she married in Floyd Tull's farmhouse April 24, 1948; a daughter and son-in-law, Eunice B. and Raymond Pearce of Oak Hill, Va.; a stepmother, Virginia Tull of Seaford; a sister, Thelma Hill of Seaford; three brothers, Floyd Tull Jr. of Rehoboth Beach and Haines Tull and Henry Tull, both of Seaford; a stepsister, Jeanne Conner and a half-brother, Steve Tull, both of Seaford.
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be private.
Carrie Benton Cowart, 90
NAPLES, Fla. - Carrie Benton Cowart of Naples died Dec. 19, 2002, in Naples. She was 90.
Mrs. Cowart was born in Sudlersville, Md., the second of five children of Frank and Mary Legg Benton.
She received her nurse's training in Baltimore, but worked for many years as a child welfare counselor for the Florida Department of Health and Human Services. In addition to her dedicated service to the citizens of Florida, Mrs. Cowart was an avid bowler and bingo player and loved to travel.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elisabeth Massey of Sudlersville, Md.; and two brothers, Franklin Benton of Barclay, Md., and Marion Benton of Clayton, Del.
She is survived by her daughter, Dee Talty of Naples; three grandsons, David M. Talty, III of Somerville, N.J., Michael S. Talty of Orange Park and Shannon T. Talty of Orlando; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Blackiston of Crumpton, Md.; as well as many devoted nieces and nephews in Maryland and Delaware.
Memorial services were Jan. 6, 2003 in Naples.
Burial will be at a later date in Millington, Md.
Donald O. Virdin, 88
ARLINGTON, Va. - Donald O. Virdin of Arlington, formerly of Hartly, Del., died after a brief hospitalization Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Arlington, Va. He was 88.
Mr. Virdin was born Sept. 26, 1912, in Hartly, son of Samuel and Lela Virdin.
He attended the University of Delaware and Washington University.
He lived in the Washington, D.C., area for many years. He worked for the secretary of the U.S. Senate and later the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1974. He was involved in legal matters related to the Watergate case for several years.
After retirement he completed his college education at Upper Iowa University and began extensive work on the genealogy of the Virdins and related Delaware families. He was the author of more than 20 books. Recent books were co-authored with Mrs. LuVerne V. Hall of Arlington, Va.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Virdin and Samuel Virdin.
He is survived by three sisters, Ruth V. Major of Wilmington, Del., Getrude E. Zartner of Omaha, Neb., and Elizabeth A. Faulkner of Middletown, Del.; a brother, Paul C. Virdin of Malaloff, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be noon today in Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2523 King St., Alexandria, Va.
The family suggests contributions may be made to the Blue and Gold Club, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19711.

Mary Regina Ash, 88
SOUTH BETHANY - Mary Regina Ash of South Bethany died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in her home. She was 88.
Mrs. Ash was born in Baltimore, daughter of the late William E. Thirlkel and Mary Regina Finn.
She was a retired school teacher.
Mrs. Ash was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Bethany Beach.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph K. Ash, in 1976.
She is survived by three sons, Paul Doug Ash, John Joseph Ash and Stephen W. Ash; two daughters, Julia Jean Schell and Carol Ash Friedman; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Del. 26 in Bethany Beach, where friends may call a half-hour earlier.
Burial will be in Mariner's Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.

Kenneth Thomas Bowen, 49
RIVERDALE, Ga. - Kenneth Thomas Bowen of Riverdale died of heart failure Monday, April 21, 2003, in Southern Regional Hospital, Riverdale. He was 49.
Mr. Bowen was born June 21, 1953 in Frankford, Del.
He was a truck driver for Showells in Bishopville, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Bowen of Jonesburgh; his father, David Bowen Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrel and Felicia Bowen of Riverdale; two daughters, Kennetha Bowen and Terri Bowen of Jonesburgh; four brothers, William Bowen, Jessie Bowen, John Bowen and David Bowen, and wife Ida Bowen, of Millsboro, Del.; seven grandchildren; mother-in-law, Esther Thomas; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes, where friends may call a half-hour earlier. The Rev. George Edwards will officiate.

Ellen M. Jester, 69
HOUSTON - Ellen M. Jester of Houston died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 69.
Mrs. Jester was born in Lebanon, Pa., daughter of the late Earl and Josephine Achenbach.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Jester was a lifetime member and past president of VFW 6483 Auxiliary in Milford, a member and past auxiliary president of American Legion Post 7 CKRT in Harrington and past president of VFW District 3.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, John B. Jester; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Risser of New Hampshire, Robert Cartwright and Donald Risser, both of Milford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Ricky Taylor of Milford, Diana and Terry Woodward of Harrington and Tina and Chris Lucas of Houston; a sister, Penelope Munnion of Lebanon; a brother, William "Pete" Achenbach of Dunken, Ariz.; three grandsons, Kerry Woodward, Marcus Woodward and Jonny Woodward; four granddaughters, Jill, and her husband, Andrew Hamilton, Jana Ladd, Jessica Annette and Hannah Risser; and four great-grandchildren, Joellen, Ashley and Amber Ladd and Casey Hamilton.

Jacqueline Alcius Joseph, 28
MILFORD - Jacqueline Alcius Joseph of Milford died Monday, April 14, 2003. She was 28.
Mrs. Joseph was born June 6, 1974 in Gonaives, Haiti, daughter of Dieufeme Alcius and Jertha Legros of Gonaives, Haiti. Jacqueline lived in Milford for nine years.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Felix Joseph of Milford; three children, Nadjeda Joseph, Kensley Joseph and Jdido Joseph; eight brothers and sisters, Leonise Alcius, Clairina Alcius, Linda Alcius, Dieudon Alcius, Dieudonne Alcius, Delouis Alcius, Jude Thibeau and Jean Biverly Desinor; uncles and aunts, Noguet Alcius, Odilon Alcius, Edner Alcius, Lisa Alcius, Silliana Jean Baptiste, Eliana Legros, Denise Legros, Jean Claude Jean Baptiste, Jizele Legros, Annerose Legros, Martine Legros, Danie Legros, Frank Legros, Mercidieu Legros, and Jean Marc Legros; nephews and nieces, Vanessa Debrosse, Sergeline Debrosse, Shelly Debrosse and Shooby Delphin; father and mother-in-law, Iloria Alcius; and friends, relatives and admirers of Delmarva.

David Mendez, 83
INDIANAPOLIS - David Mendez of Indianapolis died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. He was 83.
Mr. Mendez was born March 10, 1920, in Amarillo, Texas, son of the late Blaf and Ernesta (Morlet) Mendez.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was a warehouse laborer for Kroger, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Mendez was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Indianapolis.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Mendez; two sons, David Mendez Jr. and Jerome R. Mendez of Dover, Del.; four daughters, Patricia Place, Sandra Switzer, Debbie Wiseman and Cindy Mendez; a brother, Marcel Mendez; two sisters, Louisa Velez and Antonia Spagnolo; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 6 p.m. Sunday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Indianapolis, where friends may call three hours earlier.
Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Dennis H. Minus, 70
WYOMING - Dennis H. Minus of Wyoming died Monday, April 21, 2003. He was 70.
Mr. Minus was born April 5, 1933.
He attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Booker T. Washington schools in his early years. Dennis graduated from Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, in 1951.
He joined the U.S. Air Force, where he completed 20 honorable years. During his tour of duty, Dennis was stationed in South Korea, Puerto Rico, Germany, the Philippines and Vietnam. His stateside duties included Alaska, Sampson Air Force Base in New York, Dover Air Force Base and McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.
While attending high school, he loved to play baseball. He once told of playing with the "National Negro League" when they passed through Delaware. He loved to read, shoot pool and watch TV, but most of all he loved cooking his famous ribs. He was a loving, caring and devoted son to his mother.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold M. Stewart.
He is survived by his mother, Viola Butler who resided with him; one son, Dennis D. Minus; a loving and devoted sister, Catherine Sawyer of Camden; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Harold Murray of Philadelphia, Bobby Murray and Lois of Philadelphia, Christopher Pitts and Natalie of Houston, Courtland Pitts of Wilmington and Charles Pitts of Camden; two aunts, Mary Harris of Dover and Martha Brown of Dover; an aunt-in-law, Elaine Minus of Philadelphia; a loving cousin, Beverly; a grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery, Bear.
Hud Taylor, 57
MILLSBORO - Hud Taylor of Millsboro died Friday, April 25, 2003, in his home. He was 57.
Mr. Taylor was born in Dallastown, Pa., son of Virginia Tiehohl of York, Pa., and the late John Taylor.
He had lived in the area for the last 10 years, coming from Howard County, Md.
He was tow truck driver for A-1 Vic's Towing.
Mr. Taylor really enjoyed playing pool and being with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Christina Taylor.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joan Taylor of Millsboro; a son, John Taylor of Red Line, Pa.; a daughter, Rhondi Taylor of Oceanside, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Osborne of Georgetown and Robin Brown of Millsboro; a sister, Joann Wolfe of Ringwood, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Alexis Brown and Trent Brown, both of Millsboro.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday in Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Russell B. Sweet, 78
SMYRNA - Russell B. Sweet of Smyrna died Friday, April 25, 2003, in his home. He was 78.
Mr. Sweet was born April 19, 1925, in Milton, son of the late Martin Sweet and Bertha Sweet.
He retired in 1985 after 30 years in the Merchant Marine.
He enjoyed boating and fishing in the local area and vacationing in New Orleans and Florida. He loved to be with his grandchildren and his great-granddaughters.
Mr. Sweet was a member of the Modern Maturity Center in Dover and AAA of Dover.
He is survived by a special friend, Violet Murray of Smyrna; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Barbara Sherman of Lincoln; a daughter, Sandy Mason of Pensacola, Fla.; a cousin, Ray Dodd, and his wife, Hazel, of Milford; numerous grandchildren; and two great granddaughters.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
