Henry G. Cowgill Jr., 85
MILFORD - Henry G. Cowgill Jr. of Milford died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 85.
Mr. Cowgill was born July 24, 1917, in Wilmington, son of the late Henry G. and Blanche Kerin Cowgill. Mr. Cowgill grew up in Dover.
He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Cowgill worked for Prudential Insurance Co., retiring as a sales manager after 31 years of service.
He was an active member of Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford. He was one of the founders of the community food pantry there and managed its operations for more than 20 years.
He was an avid reader and in his younger days he enjoyed tennis, golf, fishing and hunting.
Mr. Cowgill was a member of the Milford Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sarah Haddaway Cowgill; a daughter, Sally C. Dickey of Slaughter Beach; and two grandchildren, Sarah E. Dickey and Matthew Dickey.
Services and burial will be private.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to any of the following: Avenue United Methodist Church Community Pantry, 20 N. William Anderson Cuffee, 75
GREENWOOD - William Anderson Cuffee of Greenwood died peacefully Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in his home. He was 75.
Mr. Cuffee was born March 25, 1927, son of the late Jullian Cuffee and Isabelle Brett.
William, better known as "Chunk," enjoyed life and had a loving, caring spirit. He touched the lives of many people and enjoyed life to the fullest.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Dixon of Millsboro and Fay Briddell of Laurel; three sons, William A. Cuffee Jr. of Berlin, Jerry Bailey of Gumboro and Sylvester Briddell of Selbyville; a brother, Jullian Cuffee of Dover; three sisters, Isabelle Cuffee of Norfolk, Va., Alice Jones of Dayton, Ohio, and Angel Williams of Bishopville, Md.; a sister-in-law, Esther Cuffee of Dover; 11 grandchildren; seven great-great children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Faith, Hope, Love Church, Milford.
Viewing will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford.
Burial will be in Cuffee Cemetery, Bishop, Md.

Naomi Gage, 72
SMYRNA - Naomi Gage of Smyrna died Monday Jan. 13, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 72.
Mrs. Gage was born April 11, 1930 in Woodbury, N.J., daughter of the late Walter Etherington and Elsie May Ward Etherington.
She had worked for Smyrna Animal Hospital for four years.
She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and many others. Mrs. Gage also enjoyed singing in the glee club at the Modern Maturity Center.
Mrs. Gage was a member of Presbyterian Church of Smyrna, the Modern Maturity Center in Dover and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Thielman and Flora Keene; and a brother, William Etheringston.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, George Gage.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in The Seventh-day Adventist Church, 647 Wyoming Ave., Dover.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Ave., Dover, DE 19904; or to The Seventh-day Adventist Church, 647 Wyoming Ave., Dover, DE 19904.

Betty Jarman Newman Heinold, 69
SMYRNA - Betty Jarman Newman Heinold of Smyrna died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in her home. She was 69.
Mrs. Heinold was born in Smyrna, daughter of the late Thomas Ward Jarman and Clara Belle Jarman.
She was a 1951 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna.
Mrs. Heinold had been employed as an administrative assistant to the medical director at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna for 25 years, retiring in 1994. Following her retirement, she volunteered at the Clayton Elementary School library and returned to the Delaware Hospital, Smyrna, to work part-time in the medical records department. She had been honored by being the recipient of the employee of the year and the employee of the month awards during her time at the hospital.
She enjoyed attending car shows and parades with the Vintage Car Club and tending to her roses in her yard.
Mrs. Heinold was a member of the Smyrna High School Alumni Association, and the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association. She was also an active member and former treasurer and editor for the Historical Vintage Car Club of Delaware, where she had been awarded the club's great person award.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Noble Jarman and Clinton Jarman; and a sister; Dorcas Peet.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald K. Heinold Sr.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Lea Newman of Billings, Mont., Gerald K. Heinold Jr. of Norfolk, Va., and Jeffrey S. and Carla Heinold of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Anita and Rod Bullock and Violet Newman, all of Smyrna, Susie and Mark Coleman of Clayton and Brenda and Tom Callahan of Smyrna; four brothers, Walter Jarman of Kenton, Bill Jarman of Dover, Bernie Jarman of Salisbury, Md., and Kline Jarman of Hartly; two sisters, Edith Rash of Dover and Myrtle McClements of Kenton; and 15 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery, Smyrna.

George L. Legates Sr., 64
FELTON - George L. Legates Sr. of Felton died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Bayhealth/Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 64.
Mr. Legates was born Nov. 24, 1938, son of Lottie R. Green of Felton and the late Kenneth Nelson Legates.
He served in the National Guards.
Mr. Legates worked for Swift and Delaware-Maryland Railroad for several years, retiring in 2002, then worked for Seawatch Int., Milford.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Benjamin Green; and a brother, Norman Legates.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Shirley Maloney of Frederica; seven sons and three daughters-in-law, George and Thelma Legates Jr. of Houston, Tony and Sandy Legates of Milford, David and Rhonda Legates of Harrington, Paul Legates of Greenwood, Donnie Legates of Milton, Brian Legates of Arkansas and Carlos Gonzalez of Laredo, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and John Paul of Mt. Vernon, Ga.; six grandchildren, George Legates III, Roy Legates, Brooke Legates, David Legates Jr., Heather Legates and Justin Legates; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Berry Short Funeral Home, Main Street, Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.

Norma Jean Limberis, 73
DENTON, Md. - Norma Jean Limberis of Denton died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in Caroline Nursing Home in Denton. She was 73.
Mrs. Limberis was born in Cumberland, daughter of the late Bernard Loraditch Sr. and Lucille Broadwater Loraditch.
She moved to Denton seven years ago from California. She had lived in the Washington, D.C., area from 1949 until 1978, when she and her husband moved to California. While living in Washington, she had been a secretary at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, and previously was a secretary at Andrews Air Force Base.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Limberis, July 24, 1994; a brother, Thomas Loraditch; and a sister, Mary Vicino.
She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Draper of Denton and Diana Limberis of San Rafael, Calif.; a son, Gregory W. Limberis of Herndon, Va.; two sisters, Sister Norma (Shirley Loraditch) of Ridgely and Barbara Havekost of Greenbelt: a brother, Bernard Loraditch Jr. of Fallston; and four grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church, First Street in Denton.
Burial will be private.

MILFORD - Littiey Voney "Bonnie" Marshall of Milford died of heart failure Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in her home. She was 43.
Ms. Marshall was born Oct. 12, 1959, in Milford.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Marshall of Felton and Terry Marshall of Dover; two daughters, Romonita Marshall of Milford and Angel Marshall of Dover; seven sisters, Larita Williams, Romonita Legrand, Pauline Berlum, Terresa Callick, Lena Boyd, Adlin Diaz and Delores Reed; four brothers, Juan Marshall, David Marshall, Randolph Reed and Ralph Reed; two aunts, Willie Mae Marshall and Marie Melin; two brothers-in-law, Reginal Williams and Dana Legrand; a granddaughter, Latisha Marshall; a daughter-in-law, Jenny Marshall; a special friend, James White of Milford; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
Services will be noon Friday in Young's Funeral Home, 309 North St., Milford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in Slaughter Neck.

Ruth E. Howell, 76
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Ruth E. Howell of Lawrence died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in her daughter's home in Millsboro, Del. She was 76.
Mrs. Howell was the daughter of the late John Fisher and Maggie Horton.
She was a retired domestic health care worker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Howell Jr., in 1967.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Roberts of Millsboro and Joyce L. Elliott of Lawrence; a sister, Susie Woolever of Joplin, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Family may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford, Del.
Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery, Joplin.

Lucy A. Jordan, 79
MILFORD - Lucy A. Jordan of Milford died Monday, April 23, 2001, in her home.
Mrs. Jordan was born May 31, 1921, in Huntsville, Ala.
She moved to Delaware, where she worked at Dover Air Force Base as a nurse until retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Jordan; and two brothers, Julius Humphrey and Nathaniel Humphrey.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ethel Humphrey of Washington, D.C.; a close cousin, Marian West of Hillcrest Heights, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service will be held at noon Saturday at Hubert African Methodist Episcopal Church, Jackson Street, Frederica, where friends may call one hour prior to the ceremony.
Burial will be in Gibbs Memorial Cemetery, Woodside.

Roseine Mae Edwards, 76
FELTON - Roseine Mae Edwards of Felton died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 76.
Mrs. Edwards was a housewife who raised her family with lots of love and compassion. Among her favorite things to do was shop, cook large meals for her family, and sit on her porch, swinging with her grandchildren. While shopping, she loved to look for dolls, jewelry, rings and other collectibles. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Edwards; a son, Thomas L. Edwards; and her parents, Charles H. and Emma Jane Thorpe.
She is survived by a son, David Edwards and his wife, Cathy, of Harrington; a daughter, Beverly Minner of Felton; her dear friend, William Arrington of Felton; two brothers, Marvin Thorpe of Harrington and Carl Thorpe of Dover; a sister, Doris Puckett of Ingleside, Md.; a grandson, Hank Edwards and his wife, Karen, of Townsend; two granddaughters, Annette Minner of Church Hill, Md., and Ashley Edwards of Harrington; two great-granddaughters, Victoria Edwards of Townsend and Katie Crist of Church Hill; and a great-grandson, Jeff Minner of Felton.
Friends may call from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Prahl of Sandtown Nazarene Church will officiate.

J. Warren Meacham, 78
DOVER - J. Warren Meacham of Dover died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in his home with his family. He was 78.
Mr. Meacham was born May 1, 1922, in Kingston, Pa., son of the late Charles and Adele Grimes Meacham.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was an electrical engineer for computer science in Moorestown, N.J., retiring in 1982.
Mr. Meacham was an active volunteer at St. Peter the Fisherman Church in Albrightsville, Pa. He enjoyed many hobbies, including gardening, miniatures and wood carving. He treasured the time he spent with his family, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth S. Meacham of Dover; two sons and their wives, John W. and Maureen Meacham of Havertown, Pa., and Gregory and Liz Meacham of Media, Pa.; three daughters and their husbands, Jane M. and James H. Green of Dover, Maureen M. and Philip Balderston of Clifton, Va., and Eileen M. and Andrew Hartmann of Wilmington; three brothers, Austin Meacham of Cheshire, Conn., Louis Meacham of Port Richey, Fla., and Gerald Meacham of Omaha, Neb.; and 12 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday at the Trader Funeral Home, Dover.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover. Father Hanley will officiate.

Virginia Neal Passwaters, 78
SEAFORD - Virginia Neal Passwaters died of respiratory failure Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. She was 78.
Mrs. Passwaters was born in Blades, daughter of the late Albert William and Virgie Nevade Robinson Neal.
She was a processing line worker at Con Agra, Hurlock, Md., retiring in 1982.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Jester Passwaters, in 1984.
She is survived by a son, Larry A. Passwaters of Seaford; a daughter, Jo Ann Coughenour of Seaford; a sister, Annabelle Neal of Laurel; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford, where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Robert D. Robinson will officiate.
Burial will be in Blades Cemetery.

John D. Simmons Jr., 51
PRESTON, Md. - John D. Simmons Jr. of Preston died of a heart attack, Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in The Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 51.
Mr. Simmons was born Feb. 12, 1950, in Baltimore, son of the late John D. and Dolores T. Kline Simmons.
After graduating from Glen Burnie High School in 1968, he worked at W.T. Cowans Trucking Co. and for the Howard County Department of Highways for 16 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth A. Simmons, Jan. 24, 1996.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Simmons of Harmony; a sister, Denise and her husband, Phillip Peach, of Choptank; a goddaughter and niece, Dolores Peach of Choptank; and a nephew, Peter Peach of Choptank.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Fellowship Church, Preston, with the Rev. Buddy Dunn officiating.
Burial will be in Junior Order Cemetery, Preston, at the convenience of the family.

Pearl Elburn Vansant, 88
ROCK HALL, Md. - Pearl Elburn Vansant of Rock Hall died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Magnolia Hall Nursing Home, Chestertown. She was 88.
Mrs. Vansant was born in Piney Neck, daughter of the late James and Alice Matilda Brady Elburn.
As a life resident of the Rock Hall area, she was active in the community, including volunteering as a polling worker and providing transportation, and helping to establish the Rock Hall Museum.
She owned and operated a grocery store and marina in Piney Neck.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, driving and bicycling, both at home and on the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
Mrs. Vansant was a member of the Rock Hall Lions Club and Raum Chapel Methodist Church, Rock Hall.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley F. Vansant, in 1990.
She is survived by a son, Goldey Vansant Sr. of Rock Hall; six grandchildren, Goldey Vansant Jr. of Grasonville, James Ricky Vansant of Downingtown, Pa., Kathleen Vansant Blyman and Lorianne Vansant Jacobs, both of Worton, and Walter Stanley Vansant and Mark Kevin Vansant of Rock Hall; a step-grandchild, Benny Hurlock of Rock Hall; and seven great-grandchildren, Ian Francis Vansant of Grasonville, Eric Michael Vansant of Rock Hall, Jennifer Nicole Vansant of Millington, Meredith Lade Vansant of Weirton, W.Va., Kayla Kristine Blyman, Megan Marie Blyman and Franklin Mark Blyman, all of Worton.

Hudson Taylor, 57
MILLSBORO - Hudson Taylor of Millsboro died Friday, April 25, 2003, in his home. He was 57.
Mr. Taylor was born in Dallastown, Pa., son of Virginia Tiehohl of York, Pa., and the late John Taylor.
He had lived in the area for the last 10 years, coming from Howard County, Md.
He was a tow truck driver for A-1 Vic's Towing.
Mr. Taylor really enjoyed playing pool and being with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Christina Taylor.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joan Taylor of Millsboro; a son, John Taylor of Red Line, Pa.; a daughter, Rhondi Taylor of Oceanside, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Osborne of Georgetown and Robin Brown of Millsboro; a sister, Joann Wolfe of Ringwood, N.J.; and two grandchildren, Alexis Brown and Trent Brown, both of Millsboro.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday in Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Catherine A. Astrella, 67
LONG NECK - Catherine A. Astrella of Long Neck, formerly of Lodi, N.J., died of heart failure Friday, April 25, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 67.
Mrs. Astrella was a retired medical laboratory switch board operator.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick Astrella, and three sons, Phillip, Robert and Patrick Astrella Jr.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro. Pastor J. Allen Miller will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery South, Millsboro.

Mamie Regina Dickey, 60
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. - Mamie Regina Dickey of Travelers Rest, formerly of Dover, Del., died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was 60.
Mrs. Dickey was born Sept. 23, 1942, daughter of the late John and Modell Grace Reid.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Dickey enjoyed crafts, and crossword puzzles. She helped start REACT, which helped police and fire companies with emergencies in the area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, David T. Dickey, in 1998 and a special friend, Marian Loper.
She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Janice A. and David Cooper of Travelers Rest, Dana T. Bennett of Greenville, Karla L. and John Prouse of Magnolia, Del., Mickey and Bill Edwards of Harlty, Del.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wallace "Bud" and Genice Reid of Archer, Fla.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gayle and Knobby Stone of Greenville and Hendell Lawson of Taylors; eight grandchildren, April Reh of Camden, Del., Will Edwards and Rebecca Edwards, both of Harlty, Del., Daniel Prouse and Tony Prouse, both of Magnolia, Dale and Jennifer Cooper, both of Travelers Rest and Faith Bennett of Greenville, and four special friends, Richard McAdams, Dot Halverson, Dot Ewell and Lorna Blann.
