Vincent Grant Simmons Jr., 59
GEORGETOWN - Vincent Grant Simmons Jr. of Georgetown died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, of a heart attack suffered Dec. 1, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 59.
Mr. Simmons was born in Matoaka, W.Va., son of L. Gay Lafferty Simmons, now of Wilmington, and the late Vincent Grant Simmons Sr.
He was raised in West Virginia by his maternal grandmother, the late Eliza Lafferty.
Mr. Simmons had served in the National Guard and in the Reserve.
He was the co-owner and operator of White Line Refuse and Recycling Co. for 13 years, until the business was sold in 1992. He also owned and operated Market Street Meats and Market Street Antiques in Georgetown, and had worked for Oakwood Homes as a service technician.
Mr. Simmons was a member of the Georgetown Lions Club, Lewes Moose Lodge and Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Simmons Ritter and Brad Ritter of Georgetown; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tracey Simmons of Elkton, Md.; a sister, Virginia Simmons, and a brother, Jim Simmons, both of Wilmington; his former wife and friend, Peccolia Simmons; five grandchildren, triplets Amanda Ritter, Adam Ritter and Aaron Ritter, as well as Lauren Dietterick and Nick Grovola; a cousin, Kenneth Weldon Lafferty of New Jersey; an uncle, Ernest Lafferty of West Virgina; Linda Corcoran of Seaford, with whom he resided for the past several years; and numerous members of his extended family in West Virginia.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford St., Georgetown.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral chapel. The Rev. Dave Keiser will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date in the Ritter Farm Cemetery.

Samuel M. Tillman, 79
REHOBOTH BEACH - Samuel M. Tillman of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Long Neck and Aston, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002. He was 79.
Mr. Tillman was a World War II veteran, serving as a military policeman with the U.S. Army.
Mr. Tillman was a retired automobile salesman.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanette Bohlman Tillman; four sons, Montrose, John, David and Richard; two daughters, Charyce Pompetti and Denise Cole; a brother, Harry Tillman; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck.

Alfred Henry Trivits, 83
LAUREL - Alfred Henry Trivits of Laurel died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Life Care at Lofland Park. He was 83.
Mr. Trivits was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He retired from Booth Glass Co. in Seaford in 1983 after more than 30 years.
Mr. Trivits was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sarah Marie Callaway Trivits; a son, John Trivits of Laurel; a daughter, Anne Fellows of North Troy, Vt.; two grandchildren, Lindsay and Matthew Trivits; three brothers, Leon Trivits of Seaford, Francis "PT" Trivits of Cannon and Ray Trivits of Greenwood; and a sister, Marie Roxburg of Elizabeth City, N.C.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, in Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford.

George Alfred Waters Jr., 78
LAUREL - George Alfred Waters Jr. of Laurel died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 78.
Mr. Waters was born June 27, 1924, in Laurel, son of the late George Alfred Waters Sr. and Nancy Dixon Waters.
He graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School.
Mr. Waters served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army.
He was an interior decorator for Job Culver of Laurel.
Mr. Waters was a member of Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Laurel.
He is survived by his wife, Hester Hunt Waters, who was his companion for more than 51 years, 10 children, Louis E. Stanley Jr. of Langen, Germany, Linda McKenzie of Seaford, Valberline Hunt of Whaleysville, Md., Joyce Hunt Griffin of Laurel, Jeanette Lockwood of Seaford, Geraldine Stanley and Valerie Rodriguez, both of Laurel, George Hunt of Greenwood, and Tammy Hunt and Tuanda C. Hunt, both of Laurel; 16 grandchildren; and a brother, James Waters of Chicago.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church, Laurel, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Sylvester Washington, 66
GREENWOOD - Sylvester Washington of Greenwood died of natural causes Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 66.
Mr. Washington was born Dec. 10, 1935, in Shellman, Ga., son of the late Daniel and Daisy Washington.
He attended the public schools system in Shellman.
He later relocated to Delaware. He worked for the Milford school system as a bus driver for eight years, and later owned and operated his own lawn service.
Mr. Washington will be deeply missed by his loved ones. He had a heart of gold and loved making others around him happy. He enjoyed grocery shopping and listening to the Mighty Clouds of Joy. He adored his grandchildren, who kept him motivated. He has a place in his relatives' hearts and will never be forgotten. They are forever thankful to their Lord and Savior for his love and mercy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lucious Washington and Roosevelt Washington, both of whom had lived in Shellman; and three sisters, Flossie Mae Johnson, Dora Lee Washington and Daisy Byrd, all of whom had lived in Shellman.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; six daughters and a son-in-law, Zonia and Luis Saldana of Felton, Tawanda Banks of Harrington, Shannon Banks, Sabrina Banks and Latoria Banks, all of Greenwood, and Tiana Banks of Milford; four granddaughters, Jasmine Banks, Aysia Banks and Avery Banks, all of Greenwood, and Kiana Saldana of Felton; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, George and Kate Washington of Florida and Tom and Joyce Washington of Milford; four sisters, Minnie Jordan, Sarah Johnson, Aileen White and Annie Davis, all of Shellman; and a host of aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and well-wishers.
Memorial services were Nov. 25 in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford.
Burial will be in Shellman.

Julian L. Booker, 78
BOWERS BEACH - Julian L. Booker of Bowers Beach died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Hospital, Milford. He was 78.
Mr. Booker was born Oct. 10, 1924, in Gadsden, Ala., son of the late Lewis and Nora (Smith) Booker.
He was a boatswain mate in the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Hollis, he also served with the Merchant Marines with Sun Oil Co.
He was a charter boat captain for many years and was the owner of the Charter Boat Captain Potter II.
He greatly enjoyed fishing and rabbit hunting.
Mr. Booker was a member of VFW Post 06483, the Delaware Captain's Association and a lifetime member of the Bowers Beach Fire Co.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Megee L. Booker; and a sister, Ruth Martati.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen Fitzwater Booker; a stepson and his wife, Pete and Sue Potter of Bowers Beach; a grandson, Clifton M. Potter of Bowers Beach; a granddaughter, Kristin M. Potter of Bowers Beach; a niece, Janie Chike and her family of Dover.
Services will be noon Tuesday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier. Pastor Bernard Chuhayda will officiate.
Burial will be in Barratt's Chapel.

Dennis Elmer Dernberger, 55
MILFORD - Dennis Elmer Dernberger of Milford died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 55.
Mr. Dernberger was born in Milford, son of the late Melvin E. Dernberger Sr. and Grace Clendaniel Dernberger.
He graduated from Milford High School in 1966.
Mr. Dernberger was in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country, at first in Germany, and then a tour of duty in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of sergeant and defended his beloved country in war.
He was the head of security for Scott Paper in Dover until he became disabled in 1988.
He enjoyed listening to his country music. His favorite artists included Johnny Cash, Statler Brothers and Roy Rogers. He especially enjoyed the song, "Man in Black" by Johnny Cash, and considered himself the man in black right after Johnny Cash himself. He also considered himself a Roy Rogers "Saddle Pal."
He considered himself the number one fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, and enjoyed watching their games. His favorite hobby included putting puzzles together. He could easily sit down and put together a 1000 piece puzzle in less than three hours.
He will be remembered as a loving, caring, and wonderful husband and father who was especially fond of his daughter, Heather, whom he thought the sun rose and set on her, and spoiled her tremendously.
Mr. Dernberger was a member of the Milford VFW. He attended the Milford Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a beloved grandfather, Harry Elmer Clendaniel, and a brother, Clinton Dernberger.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Connie Dernberger of Milford; his mother and father-in-law whom he thought of as his own parent, Harris and Gay Smack of Milford; two brothers, Melvin Dernberger Jr. of Harrington and Gary Dernberger of Camden; and two sisters, Beverly Abrams of Dover and Lorraine Robertson of Dover.
Services will be noon Wednesday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Highway, Harrington, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Kenneth Huffman and Joseph Aurillo will officiate.
Burial with military honors will be in Milford Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Dolores A. Carmean, 59
DELMAR - Dolores A. Carmean of Delmar died after a long illness Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 59.
Mrs. Carmean spent more than 15 years working in the medical field. The last four were with Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury, as a medical-billing clerk.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Carmean always was involved with the March of Dimes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Carmean, in 1984; and a daughter, Denice Cook.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debra A. and Steve Hubbard of Delmar; four grandchildren, Brad Thomas Vanderwende, Cortney A. Cook, Cody Cook and Chase Cook; two brothers, Eddie Herring of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Jimmy Herring of Rock Hill, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen's Cemetery Park, Delmar. The Rev. Dr. Ray Chamberlain will officiate.

William F. Gross, 86
DOVER - William F. Gross of Dover, where he was a resident since 1993, died of natural causes Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Westminster Retirement Village Health Center, Dover. He was 86.
Mr. Gross was born June 28, 1916, in Philadelphia, son of the late Louis and Vida Jackson Gross.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.
Mr. Gross worked for 31 years as a statistical clerk for Cigna, retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Sylvia Haitsch Gross; two daughters, Edith Siedlecki of Philadelphia and Evelyn Virgin of Galena, Md.; a son, Edward Gross of Woodridge, Ill.; four grandchildren, Timothy Siedlecki of Philadelphia, Bradford Virgin of Burke, Va. Liane Virgin of Thornton, Pa., and Daniel Klingel of Woodridge; and a great-grandson, Jackson Virgin.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Rhawnhurst Presbyterian Church, 7701 Loretto Ave., Philadelphia, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn, Pa.

Mary Agnes May, 98
FRISCO, Texas - Mary Agnes May of Frisco died of natural causes Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Victoria Garden, Frisco. She was 98.
Mrs. May was born Nov. 2, 1904, in Frederica, Del., daughter of the late James and Nora Hansley.
She attended public school in the Frederica area.
Mrs. May was a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, Frederica.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence May.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet and James Parks of Frederica and Delores and Robert Winston of Frisco; five grandchildren and the spouses of two, Oscar and Linda Mosley, Thomas Mosley, Debbie Perry, Robert Winston and Keith and Shawna Winston; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three very special nephews and their wives, Geary and Chris Mosley, James and Mary Ann Mosley and Dennis and Pamela Street. Geary had lived with Mrs. May from age 11 to adulthood following the death of his mother.

Lillie Scott, 72
DOVER - Lillie Scott of Dover died of respiratory failure Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 72.
Miss Scott was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Harrington.
She was a homemaker.
Miss Scott was a member of Union Baptist Church, Dover.
She is survived by two devoted nieces, Helen Brown Washington of Dover and Geraldine Gillis of Millsboro; other nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
Services will be at noon Monday at Union Baptist Church, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in People's Memorial Park, Midway, near Lewes.

Joseph Harvey Taylor, 64
DELMAR, Md. - Joseph Harvey Taylor of Delmar died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in his home. He was 64.
Mr. Taylor was born in Salisbury, son of the late Joseph Howard Taylor and Elizabeth Ellen Elliott.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was an electrician for more than 40 years.
Mr. Taylor attended Faith Baptist Church, Delmar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, who raised him, Walter Burton Elliott; and a brother, Louis Elliott.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Kay Taylor of Delmar; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven Joseph and Maria Fiore Taylor of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; a brother, Theodore Taylor of Salisbury; a sister-in-law, whom he raised, Linda Den Herder of Laurel, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove St., Delmar, Del., where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Springhill Memory Gardens, Hebron.

John G. 'Jack' Willis, 88
DOVER - John G. "Jack" Willis of Dover died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Christiana Hospital of Christiana Care, Newark. He was 88.
Mr. Willis was born March 29, 1915, near Dover, son of the late Levin A. and Clara Gooden Willis.
He was an auto mechanic and co-owner of Hayes and Willis Service Station on U.S. 13, Dover.
After selling the business, he worked for Charles Paradee Oil Co.
Mr. Willis was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church since 1945.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward G. Willis and Howard M. Willis; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Willis.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Carey Willis of Dover, a son, John G. Willis Jr. of Cockeysville, Md.; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Frances W. and Ralph Deats and Janet M. and Gene Hart, all of Dover, Mary Ann and Robert Dashiell of Camden and Suzanne K. and Tom Dukes of Kenton; a sister, Kathryn "Kitty" Simmons of Sarasota, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Samuel Aaron McParlin, 14
CAMDEN - Samuel Aaron McParlin of Camden died Friday, May 2, 2003, in his home. He was 14.
Samuel was born May 26, 1988, in Dover.
He was a ninth-grade student at Caesar Rodney High School, Class of 2006, where he was an active member of the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program and a member of the History Club.
He enjoyed outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing.
Samuel was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Marydel, Md., where he was an altar server, and a member of Boy Scout Troop 119, Marydel, where he was a senior patrol leader.
He is survived by his parents, John Allen and Julie Lee McParlin; a brother, Chad Alexander McParlin of the family home; paternal grandparents, John and Henrietta McParlin of Dover; maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Joan and Ernie Muschner of Camden; maternal grandfather, Patrick McCoy of Hartly; an uncle and an aunt by marriage, Patrick and Inseong McCoy of Dover; two aunts and an uncle by marriage, Sandra and Jeff Brooksand of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Sue Kleindensdt of Magnolia; and numerous cousins.
Memorial services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Ann Wood Moffett, 80
DOVER - Ann Wood Moffett of Dover died Saturday, May 3, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 80.
Mrs. Moffett was born April 2, 1923, in Massie's Mill, W.Va., daughter of the late Rev. W. Graham Wood and Ruth Blanton Wood.
She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chattanooga, and her master's degree in library science from Emory University, Atlanta.
She worked as a civil service librarian at Dover Air Force Base, and had previously worked in the same capacity in Germany. After retirement, she was a part-time librarian at Wesley College in Dover.
Mrs. Moffett was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Moffett, in 1987.
She is survived by two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ruth W. and Don Coffey of Davidson, N.C., and Virginia and Adolph Prochazka of Franklin, Ill.; a brother and sister-in-law, W. Graham Wood Jr. and Carol Wood of Concord, N.C.; nine nieces and nephews; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St., Dover.
Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
