Jennie N. Gosser, 75
TOWNSEND - Jennie N. Gosser of Townsend died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. She was 75.
Mrs. Gosser was a homemaker and had also worked for a brief time as a nurse's aide at the Delaware Home and Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna.
She enjoyed doing crafts, attending church and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William A. Gosser, in 2000; her parents, Gilbert and Lillian Naylor; and a brother, Robert Naylor.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harry "Peanut" Gosser and William "Billy" and Shelly Gosser, all of Townsend; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Edna Marie and Wesley Cahall of Clayton and Sharon and Steve Murray and Patricia and Edward Savin, all of Townsend; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mildred and Calvin Davis of Clayton and Florence Carden of Smyrna; five grandsons, Mark Murray, H. Robert Gosser Jr., Christopher Cahall, Jason Murray and William Gosser III; six granddaughters, Kimberly Norris, Amie Blanchfield, Jean Gosser, Teresa Gosser, Melissa Savin and Jennifer Savin; a great-grandson, Mark Murray Jr.; three great-granddaughters, Alexandria Norris, Michelle Allen and Bethany Allen; and several nieces, nephews and beloved in-laws.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Townsend Cemetery.

Retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Robert F. Horan, 55
DOVER - Retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Robert F. Horan of Dover, and formerly of Staatsburg, N.Y., died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in his home. He was 55.
Mr. Horan was born July 26, 1947, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., son of Gloria P. Baker Horan, now of Felton, and the late Francis "Skip" Horan.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force July 31, 1992, with 26 years of service, having been an environmental-control technician.
Mr. Horan was the manager of Dover Air Force Base Aero Club.
He was a CFII/MEI-rated pilot and loved hunting, fishing and golf.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Horan of Dover; his loving pets, Sandal and Midnite; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tammee Horan of Freeville, N.Y.; a daughter, Colleen Lauer of Connecticut; three grandchildren, Holden Horan of Freeville and Courtney Lauer and Nicholas Lauer, both of Connecticut; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, Alan and Barbara Horan, Keith and Sharon Horan and Geoffrey and Donna Horan, all of New York; aunts; uncles; nieces; and nephews.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. Friends also may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Darrow Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie.

Sue Hublitz
LEWES - Sue Hublitz of Lewes died peacefully, after a brief illness, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, in her home.
Ms. Hublitz was born in the Bronx, N.Y., daughter of the late Lincoln and Katherine Hublitz.
She earned a B.A. in speech therapy from Hofstra College and an M.A. in occupational therapy from Columbia University.
She spent most of her career in occupational therapy in the New York area, working with several hospitals, including St. Agnes Hospital, North Shore University and Beth Abraham Health Services. She moved to Lewes in 1998 and began working for Nanticoke Health Services in Seaford.
As an occupational therapist, she spent her life helping others to reach their highest possible level of functioning. She often saw potential in her patients that no one else could see; she gave them hope and encouraged them to reach the stars - and many of them did. She enthusiastically shared her knowledge and experience with anyone who wished to learn. She contributed to the growth and knowledge of countless therapists, and through them, she will live on.
Ms. Hublitz loved the beach, dolphins, good books, good wine and her beloved dogs.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, George and Louise Hublitz of Huntington, N.Y.; a nephew, Ian Hublitz of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and a niece, Kaitlin Hublitz of Huntington.
Memorial services will be noon Sunday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road, Millsboro.

Betty A. Johnson, 71
MILTON - Betty A. Johnson of Milton died of natural causes Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in her home. She was 71.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Milton, daughter of the late Howard F. and Melba (Copes) Bailey.
She worked as a store manager for many years at 3 Starr Deli in Harbeson.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Johnson, in 1997; and a son, Robert D. Johnson, in 1995.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Beverly and John Starr of Milton and Belinda and John Spicer of Lebanon, Pa.; two sons, Bill Johnson of Milton and Brett Johnson of Georgetown; two sisters, Nancy White of Milton and Vera Foraker of Lancaster, Pa.; three brothers, Clarence "Jigger" Bailey and Donald Bailey, both of Rehoboth Beach, and Richard Bailey of Milton; six grandchildren and the wife of one, William Lee and Traci Johnson, Robert B. Johnson, Nicole Starr, Tiffany Spicer, Lauren Johnson and John Spicer; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley Johnson, Kobe Johnson and Dylan Johnson
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton.

Dorothy May Schwatka, 97
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Dorothy May Schwatka of Chestertown died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in her home. She was 97.
Mrs. Schwatka was born May 25, 1905, in Centreville, daughter of the late Harry William and Clara May Green Holmes.
After graduating high school in Baltimore, she attended Goucher College, where she graduated in 1926, receiving her master of education degree.
Mrs. Schwatka taught at Eastern High School, Patterson Park High School and Southern High School more than 40 years. She also served as vice principal of Patterson Park High School and Southern High School. She retired in the late 1960s and moved with her husband to Gratitude in Rock Hall, then, later, to Tolchester near Chestertown.
She enjoyed gardening and was known for her orchids and outside gardens.
Mrs. Schwatka was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chestertown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Schwatka Sr., in 1970; and a daughter, Alice H. Schwatka.
She is survived by two sons, John H. Schwatka Jr. of Butler and Owen L. Schwatka of Denton; two daughters, Mildred R. Head of Laurel, Del., and Emily Nanette Klepinger of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., a sister, Anna Holmes of Ruxton; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chestertown.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Dylan Wayne Shade, stillborn
SEAFORD - Dylan Wayne Shade, stillborn son of Kevin Christian Shade and April Lynn Harris of Seaford, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alyssa Mitchell, in 1999; and his maternal grandfather, Charles Harris, in 1978.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Destiny Mitchell of Seaford; paternal grandfather, Charles Shade of Williamsport, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Susan Shade of Jersey Shore, Pa.; paternal great-grandfather, Bruce Shade of Lock Haven, Pa.; maternal grandmother, Carolyn Harris of Frederica; maternal great-grandfather, Wayne Nock of Dover; an aunt, Nicole Harris of Milford; an uncle, Michael Harris of Frederica; and a host of cousins.
Services will be private at the family's convenience.
Burial will be in the Roxana Cemetery.

Helen Margaret Stone, 87
DOVER - Helen Margaret Stone of Dover died of Alzheimer's disease Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, in Dover, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marian and John Stant of Dover, with whom she lived. She was 87.
Mrs. Stone was born and raised in Chicago, daughter of the late Matthew and Anna Pokorny Skaro.
She had lived in Chicago until moving to Dover in 1964. She was a dedicated wife and mother of eight children.
Possessing a strong faith, she dedicated her life to God and her family. She lived by her convictions, and her kindness to everyone was abundant.
Mrs. Stone was actively involved in Catholic activities in conjunction with Holy Cross Church, giving both personal and financial support. She attended daily Mass, was a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality, the Third Order of St. Francis, Church Women United and The Perpetual Altar Society, and was a lay minister. She was a champion of the helpless, the oppressed and poor, and eagerly donated her time and financial support to the pro-life movement. She peaceably protested at abortion clinics in all weather, even in her later years.
In 1963, she had marched in Washington, D.C., with Martin Luther King Jr., and there witnessed his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. Active in local volunteer activities, she was a part of a literacy program that tutored children and adults in reading and writing. She was instrumental in the establishment, and served on the board, of the Capitol Green Day Care Center. She had worked to improve the lives and living conditions of the migrant workers and was a volunteer for Catholic Social Services and the Kent County Hygiene Clinic day program. She was a past member of the League of Women Voters and had been involved with the planning stages of St. Thomas More Academy, where she provided significant financial support.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Deacon Raymond A. Stone, in 1993; and a brother, Joseph Skaro.
In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by seven other children, Ray Stone and Robert Stone, both of Dover, John Stone of Lake Bluff, Ill., Mary Placzek of Chicago, Margaret Johnson of Tucson, Maureen Hannah of Albany, N.Y., and Marita Marshall of Charleston, S.C.; 27 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Cross Church, South State Street, Dover.

John W. Dickinson, 74
SMYRNA - John W. Dickinson of Smyrna died of a heart attack Saturday, May 5, 2001, in his home. He was 74.
Mr. Dickinson was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Townsend, son of the late James Leonard Dickinson and M. Estella Dickinson.
He had been a resident of Smyrna for 25 years.
Mr. Dickinson was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1944, and the University of Delaware in 1951, majoring in library science.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations.
Mr. Dickinson spent most of his career as the Smyrna High School librarian, retiring from the Smyrna School District in 1988 after 37 years of service.
After retirement he worked as an antique and collectibles dealer. He was co-owner of Delaware Country in North East, Md., and formerly was owner of John's Fleas and Delawareana at the Market Place in Odessa.
He was known for his knowledge of local Delaware history and was an authority on Delaware books and local authors. He lived a full life, enjoying his career and his involvement in community service and his love for music.
While librarian, Mr. Dickinson was involved in various educational organizations. He served as president of school librarians of Delaware, was on the advisory council of the National Education Association, was active in the state and local education associations, president of the Classroom Teachers of Delaware and founder of the Library Aides of Delaware. He was Student Council adviser and worked with the American Host Program. Mr. Dickinson was founder and librarian for the short-lived Townsend Library.
He devoted much of his time in recent years to helping with the restoration of the Smyrna Opera House, serving as president of the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association and having a large role in the Delawareana Auction held semiannually at Clayton Fire Hall. He served on the board of trustees and was the secretary for Old Union Historical Society and a member of the Duck Creek Historical Society, He served on the board and was the treasurer for the Townsend Cemetery and a member of the Friends of Smyrna Library, was active with the Silver Eagles boys' civic group in the '60s and was founder of the Silver Eagles Glee Club.
Mr. Dickinson was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church and was the choir director for Immanuel United Methodist Church in Townsend. He also served on the Building and Finance Committee and taught Sunday school at Immanuel. He was instrumental in putting together the annual reunion and Christmas Candlelight Services at Old Union Church near Townsend, and was a former chairman of the Singing Players of Dover. He was a member of the 3Ms of the Townsend Immanuel United Methodist Church, where he worked church suppers and musicals, and helped shut-ins.
He is survived by two brothers, James L. Dickinson III of Smyrna and Benjamin S. Dickinson of Gov. Bacon Health Center in Delaware City; a sister, Marjorie A. Quillen of Townsend; three nieces and a nephew he helped raise, Peggy Ford, June Harper, Joann Jones and Michael Quillen; and an additional three nieces and three nephews.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Main Street, Townsend.
Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Burial will be in the Townsend Cemetery.

Catherine T. Eddington, 91
DOVER - Catherine T. Eddington of Dover died Monday, May 7, 2001, in the Capitol Health Care Center. She was 91.
Mrs. Eddington was born May 5, 1910, in Newark, Md.
She had owned and operated Catherine's Beauty Shop in Dover.
Mrs. Eddington was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover, the United Methodist Women Circle and the Order of St. Luke.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Norris Eddington, in 1993; and her granddaughter, Jenna Leigh Kleles, in 1985.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Joan and Charles Kleles of Dover.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover.

Cynthia P. Hudson, 63
DOVER - Cynthia P. Hudson of Dover died of pneumonia Saturday, May 5, 2001, in Silver Lake Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Dover. She was 63.
Mrs. Hudson was born in New York, the daughter of the late Harold and Alberta Cridge Phillips.
Upon her graduation from Dickinson College of Carlisle, Pa., she moved to Dover in 1960 and taught at the Caesar Rodney High School until the birth of her first child. After her children were grown, she served as a property manager for Colonial Investment Management Co. in Dover until illness forced her retirement in 1991.
She will be remembered for being a loving mother and one who found enjoyment in being a bridge player.
Mrs. Hudson was active in community and civic affairs, and had been a member of First Baptist Church of Dover, the Kent General Hospital junior board, the American Association of University Women and the Dover Century Club.
She is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law, William S. and Kimberly J. Hudson of Selbyville and Robert P. Hudson of Dover; and two grandchildren, Joshua Hudson and Kristin Hudson, both of Selbyville.
Service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Dover, 301 Walker Road, Dover, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, East Quoge, N.Y.

Theresa M. Richardson, 51
MIDDLETOWN - Theresa M. Richardson of Middletown died of cancer Monday, May 7, 2001, in Christiana Hospital of Christiana Care, Newark. She was 51.
Mrs. Richardson was a graduate of Salisbury State College, now Salisbury State University, in Salisbury, Md.
She was a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher at St. Anthony's in Wilmington. She sponsored the S.T.A.R. Reading Program.
Mrs. Richardson was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Middletown.
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Robert A. Richardson Jr.; a daughter, Mary Catherine Richardson of White Marsh, Md.; a son, Stephen Phillip Richardson, a senior at the University of Delaware in Newark; her mother, Emily Robbins of Cambridge, Md.; and two brothers, Phillip L. Robbins III of Salisbury and Mark A. Robbins of Cambridge.
Mass of Christian burial will be 8 p.m. Thursday in Price Hall, St. Joseph's Complex, Cleaver Farm Road off Del. 299 in Middletown, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be private.

Lois Arlene Hoback 'Momma Mouse' Stagg, 71
SMYRNA - Lois Arlene Hoback "Momma Mouse" Stagg of Smyrna died Sunday, May 6, 2001, in her home. She was 71.
Mrs. Stagg was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Maybeury, W.Va., the fourth of six Hobacks of the late Garnie and Emma Mae Hoback.
She moved to Delaware in the late 1940s, seeking and finding employment at the old Bud Co. in Newark. In 1950 she married Kenneth Stagg of Hackensack, N.J., and followed his lengthy career in the U.S. Air Force, traveling all over the country and world. Upon returning to Delaware in 1969, she worked at Metalcraft of Smyrna/Dover. She stopped working in 1988 to care for her ailing husband.
She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She cared for all living things and was always more considerate of others than herself. When not relaxing with family, reading was her greatest enjoyment while alone. Besides occasional trips to Atlantic City and Dover Downs, playing bingo was her favorite social event, as she supported all the Kent County fire halls. She also enjoyed gardening and spent a lot of time outdoors nurturing plant growth.
Ms Stagg was a member of AMP and Air Force Sergeants Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in December 1988; and a sister, Ruth Feathers, in 1999.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Lisa Stagg of Harrington; a daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Karl Kenney of Middletown; two brothers, Therman and Charles (Harrison) Hoback of Skygusty, W.Va.; a sister, Nellie Freise of Princeton, W.Va.; two grandsons, U.S. Army Spc. Michael Stagg, and his wife, Heather, of Ft. Richardson, Alaska, and Daniel Stagg of Harrington; and a great granddaughter, Alexis Stagg of Alaska.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main St. in Smyrna.

Margaret Karch Zaimes, 85
LACKAWAXEN, Pa.- Margaret Karch Zaimes of Lackawaxen, Pa., died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in her home, after a long illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Zaimes was a native of Nazareth, and the daughter of the late George A. Karch and Mabel Ernst Karch.
She started her newspaper career as a reporter for the Nazareth Item, then joined the Easton (Pa.) Express and later the Allentown (Pa.) Call-Chronicle Newspapers in the Bethlehem bureau. In 1940 she was named society editor of the former Newburgh (N.Y.) News. It was there that she met another young reporter, Charley Zaimes. They were married three months later, just after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
The couple moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the Harris and Ewing Photo News agency, which serviced major metropolitan newspapers, including the New York Herald Tribune, the New York Times the Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, the New York PM and the Los Angeles Times Mirror.
The American National Red Cross then hired them as war correspondents to report on the activities of Red Cross personnel serving with the armed forces. One of just a few women war correspondents, she covered the war in England, France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany while her husband was in Italy, Sicily and the Middle East.
Mrs. Zaimes and her family traveled extensively after the war and lived in Allentown and Harrisburg before moving to Lackawaxen nine years ago.
Wherever she went, she collected local recipes and used many of them when she published her cookbook, "The Best of Fin Fare," in 1978. She also wrote cooking features for "Angler's News" for eight years and wrote "Meals from the Creel" for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission's magazine, "Pennsylvania Angler."
Mrs. Zaimes was a longtime member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and served on that organization's board of directors.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William F. Karch.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Dimitri G. Zaimes of Lackawaxen and Jon P. Zaimes of Felton, Del.; a daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeanette M.S. Zaimes of Felton; a grandson, Adam Jason Zaimes of Felton; a brother, Edward L. Karch of Nazareth; a sister, Mary Chumas of Nazareth; and several nieces and nephews.
Service was held privately, with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date.
Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60611-1676, or to a favorite charity.

Harley Adams, 71
DOVER - Harley Adams of Dover departed this life Friday, May 2, 2003. He was 71.
Mr. Adams was born May 5, 1931, in Viola, son of the late Augustus Lewis Sr. and Sarah Adams Lewis.
He was educated at The Paul Lawrence Dunbar School in Wyoming.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Korean War for two years.
Mr. Adams worked at the Dover Air Force Base for 19 years and for the Capital School District for 20 years. After his retirement, he continued to do part-time work.
He was quite familiar to anyone living in the city of Dover. He took daily walks downtown to the news-stand, greeting everyone on his way. He would call family members and friends daily to see how they were doing.
Mr. Adams joined the church family of Love Temple Church of God in Christ in Dover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Lester Adams and Augustus Lewis Jr.
He is survived by four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Thelma and John Dixon of Camden, twin sis-ter,Hazel Quail, Mary and Webster Looper, Ethel Thomas and G. Louis Rawls, all of Dover; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special friend and caregiver, James Scott of Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Love Temple COGIC, 1057 S. Governors Ave., Dover, where friends may two hours earlier.
