Walta ChandlerAbbott, 62
LEWES - Walta Chandler Abbott of Lewes, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, peacefully in her home following a six-year standoff with inflammatory breast cancer. She was 62.
Ms. Walta, as all of her dance students knew her, loved to teach ballet and tap to 3- through 7-year-olds in various schools in the Washington and northern Virginia area. She worked for Marilyn Baird's Joy of Dance, although she never thought of it as work. To Ms. Walta it truly was the joy of dance.
She also loved to sew everything from clothes to quilts, having been a costumer for the Barter Theatre, Abingdon, Va., and The Arena Stage in Washington, once her family began to grow. Ms. Abbott was an avid vegetable gardener as well, turning her small Lewes yard into a plot full of herbs, veggies, fruits, nuts and flowers.
Early in her career, Ms. Abbott acted at the Barter Theatre and at Shakespeare in Central Park, Louisville, Ky., playing everything from the lead in The Red Shoes to Kate in The Taming of the Shrew. However, her true, complete love and devotion was for her five children and 10 grandchildren.
During her brief three-year stay in Lewes, she made numerous friends and touched many lives, particularly in the Health Care Community. Unlike the majority of her treatment for cancer in Washington, she found genuine care, compassion and love at the Tunnel Cancer Center, Lewes, Office of Integrative Health - Beebe Hospital, Lewes, the various floors of the Beebe Hospital itself, Aroma Therapy, Rehoboth Beach, Acupuncture Treatment, Lewes, Naturopathic Medicine, Rehoboth Beach, and finally Delaware Hospice, Georgetown. She once said, while attending the Lewes-Rehoboth Health Fair, that she knew everyone there. She took pride in being an educated "health care consumer."
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Walter H. Abbott of Lewes; five children, Douglas Beatty of Lewes, Lennis Klenk of Ashburn, Va., Charles Beatty of Los Angeles, Wally Beatty of Las Vegas, Nev., and Christa Davis, Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Jacqueline Cahoon of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Marian Davis of Hinton, W. Va.; two brothers, Robert Chandler of Mount Prospect, Ill., and Thomas Chandler of Las Vegas; and 10 grandchildren sprea out all over the country.
