Arthur Edward Perdue Sr., 68
SEAFORD - Arthur Edward Perdue Sr. of Seaford died from complications from an aneurysm Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 68.
Mr. Perdue was born in Berlin, Md., son of the late Elwood and Dorothy Donaway Perdue.
He was a salesman for Sysco Foods, Pocomoke City, Md., before retiring. Prior to that he worked for Covey Food in Seaford. At the time of his death he was helping his son at his business, Scott's Car Care in Seaford.
Mr. Perdue was a member of the Nanticoke Post 6 American Legion, Seaford and was past governor of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1728 in Seaford. He was active in the Nanticoke Little League for 25 years, coaching two Little League teams to the World Series. He was also a former member of the Maryland Army National Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Hammond and Clara Joseph, and a brother, James Perdue, earlier this year.
He is survived by his wife, June Kraft Perdue; three sons, Dale P. Perdue, Arthur Perdue Jr., and D. Scott Perdue, all of Seaford; a daughter, Alison P. Tingle of Seaford; three brothers, William Perdue of Greenwood, Preston Perdue of El Monte, Calif., and John Wayne Perdue of Seaford; four sisters, Ruth Rememter of Georgetown, Helen Phillips, Mildred Chalmers, and Doris Mitchell, all of Seaford, and 10 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. David B. Humphrey will officiate.
Burial will be in Odd fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Donald K. Smith, 82
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Donald K. Smith of Chestertown died Friday, Nov. I5, 2002, in Heron Point in Chestertown. He was 82.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Baltimore, son of the late Warren Willard and Hallie Lawrence Smith. He had been a resident of Heron Point in Chestertown, Md. since 1941.
He graduated from Baltimore City College class of 1938 and Washington College class of 1942 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
He worked with DuPont in Alabama where he met and married Evelyn Motes.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy as an ensign during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was honorably discharged on May 14, 1946.
Mr. Smith worked with Penniman and Browne Inc. as a marine chemist in Baltimore. He was instrumental and active in organizing the Marine Chemists Association where he held many offices. He retired from Penniman and Browne Inc. in 1990 and continued on a consulting basis with the Marine Chemists Association until 2000.
He enjoyed fishing and volunteering his time and efforts.
Mr. Smith was a member of First United Methodist Church in Chestertown and Faith Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, where he was very active. He was also past post commander and secretary of the C. Markland Kelly American Legion Post 174.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald H. and his wife, Jean Z. Smith of Phoenix, and Warren E. Smith of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Dean McCord Smith and Jennifer Catherine Smith, both of Baltimore.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wesley Hall Heron Point, Chestertown, and on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Faith Presbyterian Church in Baltimore.
Burial will be private in Dulaney Valley Cemetery.

CLAYTON - Tylor James Stanton of Clayton died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, in Dover. He was an infant.
Tyler is survived by his parents, James E. Harmon and Carrie L. Stanton, both of Clayton; maternal grandparents, Sandra L. Garner and Jerry L. Stanton, both of Clayton; great-grandparents, John and Bessie Stanton and Melvin and Carolyn Freidel, all of Clayton, and Thelma Stanton of Troy, Ala.; fraternal grandparents, Bobby G. Richard Ernest 'Champ' Johnson III, 20
PHILADELPHIA - Richard Ernest 'Champ' Johnson III, of Philadelphia, died Wednesday Nov. 13, 2002, in Dover, Del. He was 20.
Mr. Johnson was born May 8, 1982, in Atlantic City, N.J.
He attended local private and public schools in Atlantic County, N.J. until fourth grade. Thereafter, he enrolled in the Admiral Farragut Naval Academy in Toms River, N.J. Later, he attended Greenfield Middle School and graduated from George Washington Carver High School for Engineering and Science in Philadelphia. While attending this school, he ran track and participated in the Penn Relays. He was also a volunteer for the Special Olympics. In 2000 he matriculated Delaware State University in Dover, Del.
As a youth he was affiliated with the A.C. Dolphins and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City, N.J.
Mr. Johnson was lifelong member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He also served as an Acolyte.
He is survived by his mother, Cassandra F. McCall-Clark and her husband, Austin Clark, Jr. and father, Richard E. Johnson, Jr.; four sisters, Allyson Elwena Clark, Alexis Efia Clark, Keicia R. Clark, and Teresa Snow; two brothers, Austin Edward Clark, III and Eric K. Clark; maternal grandparents, Joyce T. McCall-Still and James R. Edgehill; paternal grandparents, Barbara A. Johnson, Richard E. Johnson, Sr. and Dorothea J. Brown; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sister Josephine Mary Burke, I.H.M., 87
IMMACULATA, Pa. - Sister Josephine Mary Burke, I.H.M., the former Margaret T. Burke, of Immaculata died of natural causes Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, in Camilla Hall Infirmary, Immaculata. She was 87.
Sister Josephine Mary was born in Delaware City, Del., daughter of the late Frederick E. and Mary J. Woods Burke.
She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in 1935, and taught in the Philadelphia Archdiocese and Allentown Diocese for 65 years before retiring to Camilla Hall.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick J. Burke; and three sisters, Mary, Anne and Eleanor.
She is survived by two sisters, Sadie Voshell and Julia Mast, both of Clayton Del.; many nieces and nephews; and the sisters of her community.
The Rev. Paul G. Mast, her nephew, concelebrated a Mass of Christian burial Oct. 15.
Burial was in Immaculata Cemetery, Immaculata.
A memorial Mass for both Sister Josephine Mary and her brother, who died Sept. 29, 2002, in which family and friends are invited to share, will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, South Street and Ransom Lane, Smyrna, Del.

Helen S. Engle, 78
TAMPA, Fla. - Helen S. Engle of Tampa, and formerly of Smyrna, Del., died of natural causes Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in St. Joseph Hospital, Tampa. She was 78
Mrs. Engle had resided in Tampa with her niece. She retired after 30 years as a teacher, and had taught for many years at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Engle.
She is survived by her loving family in Florida and Delaware.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, U.S. 13, in Minquadale, Del., where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Edna Rebecca 'Betty' Hill (nee Pinder), 77
DOVER - Edna Rebecca "Betty" Hill, nee Pinder, died, after a long illness, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in her home. She was 77.
Mrs. Hill was born in Centreville, Md.
She lived on Maryland's Eastern Shore until 1968, when she moved to Delaware. She had lived in the Dover-Smyrna area since.
Mrs. Hill, prior to her retirement in 2001, worked as a foster grandmother at the Welch Elementary School on Dover Air Force Base.
Strong religious belief, the love of her family and a keen sense of humor saw her through her life's trials and tribulations, and sustained her in her final days.
Mrs. Hill attended Full Gospel Church in Clayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Kemp Hill Sr., in 1973; and a son, Lawrence "Bucky" Hill Jr., in 1996.
She is survived by five daughters and five sons-in-law, Shelia and Jerry Lomax of Townsend, Theresa and Clem Fisher of Camden, Becky and Donnie Jewell of Centreville, Kristan and Frank Adkins of Smyrna and Marchelle and Rich Adams of Felton; two sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Angela Hill of Felton and Clinton "Gene" and Joy Hill of Hartly; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Warren and Elaine Hayes of Piedmont, Okla.; a grandson whom she raised, Lee Hill, as well as Mr. Hill's fiancée, Apryl Snow, both of New Castle; six additional grandsons; nine granddaughters; numerous great-grandchildren; a dog, Tinker; and a cat, Pretty Boy.
Services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in Full Gospel Church, Clayton-Delaney Road, Clayton, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Lynette A. Henderson, 66
HARRINGTON - Lynette A. Henderson of Harrington died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 66.
Mrs. Henderson was born June 28, 1936, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Hilton C. and Eleanor L. Lowe, and grew up in Glen Echo Heights, Md.
She was a homemaker.
She was an avid gardener, both inside and outside her home. She loved doing counted cross-stitching, crocheting and needlepoint crafts. She also was a talented cook. She loved collecting cookbooks, as well as Ty Beanie Babies. She will be sadly missed by her family and close friends.
In her earlier years, Mrs. Henderson was a longtime member of, and active in, the Civil Air Patrol of Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Daniel J. Henderson Sr. of Harrington; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel J. Henderson Jr. of Omaha, Neb., and Donald J. and Sue M. Henderson of Harrington; a daughter, Sherri L. Henderson of Harrington; a sister, Nancy L. Lowe of Harrington; two brothers, Joe W. Lowe of Silver Spring, Md., and Hilton "Calvin" Lowe of Jacksboro, Tenn.; two grandsons, David J. Henderson of Bellevue, Neb., and Jackson L. Henderson of Omaha; a granddaughter, Brenda M. Henderson of Bellevue; and a great-grandson, Samuel Clark of Bellevue.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. Du Pont Highway, Harrington.

Wayne L. Hill, 60
MILFORD - Wayne L. Hill of Milford died Monday, May 12, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. He was 60.
Mr. Hill was born Nov. 17, 1942, in Milford, son of the late Lawrence S. and Alice Johnson Hill.
He graduated from Milford High School with the Class of 1961.
Mr. Hill served with the Delaware Army National Guard unit based in Harrington, Battery B of 2nd AW Battalion, 198th Artillery.
He, along with his wife, owned and operated Holly Hill Farms Inc., a grain, vegetable and poultry farm, for the past 41 years.
He served on various agricultural committees, including the Milford Southern States Board and the Delaware Electric Co-Op Advisory Committee, and was honored by the Milford Jaycees as Farmer of the Year in 1973.
Besides his love of farming, Wayne's other passion was serving his community as a volunteer fireman. He joined the Carlisle Fire Co. on Sept. 6, 1962. Over his many years with the company, he held the positions of fire chief, assistant fire chief, chief engineer, vice president and superintendent, and was on the board of directors. He also served on many committees, including fire prevention, bylaws, fireman of the year, archives, antique truck, points and membership, remembrances and resolutions, sunshine and the 200th snniversary celebration, and was past chairman of the finance, building, truck and ambulance committees.
In 1983, he received lifetime membership status with the company. Mr. Hill was elected Carlisle Fire Co.'s Fireman of the Year in 1990, and in 1996 was chosen by the Milford Elks Lodge for the honors of Fireman of the Year.
In 2002, Mr. Hill joined as an honorary member of the Memorial Fire Co. in Slaughter Beach.
He was a member of the Kent County Chiefs' Association, Delaware State Fire Chief Association and was currently serving on the Kent County Call Board Advisory Committee.
Mr. Hill was a charter member of the Milford Elks Lodge 2401, a former member of the Milford Kiwanis Club and a member of the AARP.
Wayne was a past grand marshal of the Milford Halloween parade, which is enjoyed annually by hundreds of families.
Mr. Hill was an avid fan of NASCAR racing.
He was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford.
Besides his parents, Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his brother, Benton Hill.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carolyn E. Hill, a daughter, Dawn L. Hill of Dover; a son, Chris E. Hill of Milford; his aunt, Jeanette Worden of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Jean R. Hill of Milford; a nephew, Marvin E. Hill of Milford; and a niece, Penny Hampton of Milford.
Services with full fireman's honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Carlisle Fire Co. Station, 615 N.E. Front St., Milford, where friends may call after 10 a.m. and an Elks memorial service will take place at 12:45 p.m.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford.

Frances W. McClain, 77
DENTON, Md. - Frances W. McClain of Denton died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 77.
Mrs. McClain was born in Trappe, daughter of the late John Edward Harrison and Stella Greenwood Harrison.
She had worked for McCord's Laundry for many years in Easton and Denton. In 1987, she moved to Denton from Easton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Thistlewood; and a brother, Kenneth Harrison Sr.
She is survived by her husband, George D. McClain Jr. of Denton; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane K. and James Johnson of Denton; a sister, Jean Wessells of Seaford, Del.: two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Ray Wessells Jr. of Webster Springs, W.Va.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Denton Cemetery, Denton.

Charles F. Messina, 83
DOVER - Charles F. Messina of Dover died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 83.
Mr. Messina was born June 3, 1919, in Hazletteville, son of the late Antonio and Teresa (Carnesi) Messina.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
He had been a carpenter and businessman.
Mr. Messina was an avid gardener and a dedicated family man who will be deeply missed and remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria May Messina of Dover; two sons, Anthony Messina of Dover and Charles Messina of Hartly; two daughters, Mary Messina of Bear and Barbara Drake of Lewes; two brothers, Philip Messina and Joseph Messina, both of Dover; two sisters, Frances Vogl and Lena Analore both of Delaware; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Thomas Rodney Mifflin, 70
SLAUGHTER NECK - Thomas Rodney Mifflin of Slaughter Neck, son of the late Roman and Elizabeth (Waples) Mifflin, was born in Georgetown on Dec. 8, 1932. He departed this life in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital and went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 10, 2003.
His early life was spent in Georgetown, where he attended the Richard Allen Elementary School and graduated from the William C. Jason Comprehensive High School, and completed his education, attending one year at Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, Dover.
Tom started playing baseball while he was in junior high school and continued playing for the Jason Pioneers, Jason High School's first baseball team. A pro scout from the Pittsburgh Pirates observed his baseball skills, and he was given an opportunity to try out for the team. He was also a member of the Pioneers' first track team.
As a child, he attended church with his parents, and became a member of the Prospect A.M.E. Church in Georgetown.
He married Elizabeth "Betty" Woodall of Milton, and out of this union, three children were born, Pamela, Janice Marie (now deceased) and Brian. After the passing of his wife, he married Jeanette, and out of this union two children were born, Karen and Janice Anita.
They made their home in Slaughter Neck, where he re-dedicated his church vows under the leadership of the Rev. Lewis R. Jones and became a strong and faithful member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church until his passing, serving as a member of the administrative board, trustee board, finance committee, church school, United Methodist men, usher board, branch lay leader and president of the gospel choir. He was also a recipient of the Stewardship Recognition Award. He was instrumental in developing a recreational center for youth at the old Wesley Chapel Church site.
Serving the community, he was past president of the Slaughter Neck Community Action Organization, where he was instrumental in helping to begin the sports complex and Senior Citizen Center program. Notable moments in his life were being a recipient of the NAACP Peacemakers Award and induction into the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame. He was loved by family, church members, friends and the community for his willingness to serve and support.
He loved his wife and was a great role model for his family, instilling in them to "always pray and trust in God." Tom was supportive, encouraging, kind, full of fun and had a big heart. Most of all, Tom loved the Lord.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of 43 years, Jeanette M. Mifflin; a son, Brian T. Mifflin, and wife, Trudina Hicks Mifflin of Magnolia; three daughters, Pamela D. Waters and husband, Tom, of Milford, Karen E. Nesmith and husband, Anthony, and Janice A. Williams and husband, Anthony, all of Slaughter Neck; 10 grandchildren, André Mifflin, Denetra Mifflin, Tyron Mifflin, LaShana Mifflin, Stephanie Cirwithian, Shanéa Mifflin, Tiffany Cirwithian, Briana Mifflin, Tonenisha Williams and Antonio Williams; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lula Rowly of Georgetown, Patsy Henry and husband, the Rev. Paul Henry of Newark, and Ruthann Fletcher and husband, Alan, of Seaford; two sisters-in-law, The Rev. Martha Mifflin of Georgetown and Clarice Mifflin of Chester, Pa., several nephews and nieces, and one special niece that helped care for him, Patsy Young of Ellendale; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Slaughter Neck.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the church.

Howard A. Mitchell, 79
NEWARK - Howard A. Mitchell of Newark passed away of complications of bone cancer Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in Millcroft in Newark. He was 79.
Mr. Mitchell attended Temple University, class of 1951.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received two Purple Hearts.
He retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1983 after 27 years. He also had worked part-time as a security guard at the DuPont Co. Glasgow Site.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Newark Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 475, and of two American Legion posts, Post 4 of Wilmington and Post 926 of Aston, Pa.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marion V. Mitchell; two sons, David of Fairhill, Md., and Howard Jr. of Newark; three daughters, Barbara Mitchell of Washington, D.C., Patricia A. Cox of Earleville, Md., and Donna Skomorucha of New Castle; two stepsons, Leonard B. Pinder Jr. of Middletown and William E. Pinder of Swarthmore, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Lenora Lagoda of Blairsville, Pa., and Rita J. Hewitt of Elkton, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Alma F. Moeller, 74
HARTY - Alma F. Moeller of Hartly died of respiratory failure Thursday, May 10, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Milford. She was 74.
Mrs. Moeller was born March 26, 1927, in Freeburn, Ky., the daughter of the late Frank and Jossie (Stevens) Daniels.
She came to Delaware during World War II at age 14 to work in a gunpowder factory in Elkton, Md. She worked her whole life until 2000, with her last place of employment being the Hartly Market.
Her family was the main joy in her life and she loved having them all visit her. When she visited she always brought her famous potato salad.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Buddy Daniels.
She is survived by three sons, Kermit, and his wife, Susan Bentley, of Frederica, Clarence David, and his wife, Mary Lou Bentley, of Hartly, and Johnny Lee Moeller of Hartly; three daughters, Ganelle Fedewa and Gloria Gene Bentley of Hartly, and Heaven Leigh Allen, and her friend, Will Lutton, of Leipsic; three brothers, Franklin D. Daniels of Hartly, Frank Daniels Jr. of Woodside and John G. Daniels of Felton; five sisters, Phyllis Daniels of Lewes, Helen Devlin of Viola, Ellen Glandon of Willow Grove, Ersie Reynolds and Ruth McClain, both of Dover; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Remembrance service will be 1 p.m. today at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. The Rev. James Ashley will officiate.
Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.
