George Franklin Shaffer, 89
GREENSBORO, Md. - George Franklin Shaffer of Greensboro died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in the Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Denton. He was 89.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Indiana, Pa., son of the late John H. Shaffer and Carrie Elizabeth Hostetler Shaffer. He had lived in Greensboro since 1921, coming from Indiana, Pa.
He was a truck driver. He was a self-employed Harley Davidson motorcycle dealer and motorcycle mechanic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey D. Shaffer on Jan. 16, 2001.
Mr. Shaffer was an active and faithful member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Denton.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ennis C. Shaffer, whom he married on June 16, 1945; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold C. and Linda Shaffer of Dover, Del. and John C. and Kathy Shaffer of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Patti Cherry Shaffer; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilynn "Marley" and Rev. Chan Hubbard of Greensboro; four sisters, Mildred O'Day of Greenwood, Del, Irma Garey of Felton, Del, Kathleen Cole and Gladys Collison, both of Denton; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Calvary Baptist Church, 1120 Market St. in Denton.
Burial will be in Denton Cemetery, Denton.
Joseph John Birkenstock, 67
LEWES - Joseph John Birkenstock of Lewes died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in his home. He was 67.
Mr. Birkenstock was born in Philadelphia.
He graduated from North Catholic High School and the University of Notre Dame, after attending Mount St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md., for several years.
He served in the U.S. Army as a chemist during the 1950s.
After leaving the service, he worked in several fields of industry and government, including several years as manager of an advanced manufacturing plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He had been a computer specialist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., until his retirement in 1998.
Mr. Birkenstock was an accomplished audiophile who built and rebuilt countless vacuum tube amplifiers and collected hundreds of LPs of classical music.
A dedicated cyclist, he completed many long-distance tours and several 100-mile "country" rides. As a Boy Scout leader, he became an avid camper and hiker, and taught outdoor and leadership skills to the children in his troop. During his time in lower Delaware, he volunteered with the Lewes Public Library and Meals on Wheels.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marguerite; three sons, Gregory of New York City, David of Arlington, Va., and Joseph M. and his wife, Paula; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Birkenstock of Feasterville, Pa., Margaret McCormick of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., and Frances Rumpf of Allentown, Pa.; a granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth of Alexandria; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in St. Edmond's Catholic Church, King Charles Street and Laurel Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro at a later date.

Clara R. Dixon, 74
SMYRNA - Clara R. Dixon of Smyrna died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 74.
Mrs. Dixon was born in Essex County, Va., daughter of the late Crawford and Evelyn Lumpkin Washington.
She was a graduate of the R.I. Academy in Essex.
She was a homemaker for most of her adult life.
Ms. Dixon had moved from Tappahannock, Va. to Philadelphia prior to moving to Smyrna in 1998.
A dedicated mother and grandmother, she was also an active member in the New Fellowship Baptist Church of Philadelphia and was a longtime member of the Union Hope Baptist Church in King and Queen, Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W Watson, and a brother, Crawford Washington.
She is survived by two sons, Everett T. Dixon of Philadelphia and Ronald J. Dixon of Dunnsville, Va.; three daughters, Carolyn O. Williams of Philadelphia, Gloria P. Shackleford of Bear, and Attice G. Taylor of Smyrna; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday in the Union Hope Baptist Church, King & Queen County, Va.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joseph R. Dopirak Sr., 71
FELTON - Joseph R. Dopirak Sr. of Felton died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial, Milford. He was 71.
Mr. Dopirak was born in Chester, Pa., son of the late Joseph A. and Catherine (Kosek) Dopirak.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard aircraft carriers.
Mr. Dopirak owned his own business until 1955, when he went to work for General Foods as a package maintenance specialist. Upon his retirement in 1986, he continued to work for General Foods as a consultant traveling all over the country.
He loved to work with wood making a lot of craft cutouts. He and his wife were avid travelers and liked to go camping and sailing. Together, they spent a lot of time in Florida every year where Mr. Dopirak enjoyed going fishing. He was a very strong-willed, loving, dedicated husband and father. His caring nature and consideration of others made others love him dearly. He never said a cross word about anybody. He will be missed not only by his family but by all those who knew him.
Mr. Dopirak was a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge 534 for more than 30 years. He was a dedicated Moose member who had served in every office, except governor. He earned his Fellowship Degree.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Florence D. Dopirak; a son, Joseph R. Dopirak Jr. of Felton; a daughter, Stephanie Jo Gregory of Richmond, Va., and a sister, Nancy McKeown of Wilmington.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway., Harrington.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The Reverend Tim Isley of Calvary Wesleyan Church, Harrington will officiate.
Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.
Allen E. Hall, 78
DOVER - Allen E. Hall of Dover died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in Christina Hospital, Wilmington. He was 78.
Mr. Hall was born April 17, 1924, in New Richmond, Ohio, son of the late Glen and Viola (Meeker) Hall.
He was a lifetime member of the America Legion, AOPA Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, American Radio Relay League Inc., and Mid-Atlantic Amateur Radio Club Inc.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara J. Hall.
He is survived by his companion and friend, Ursula M. Thomas of Dover; a brother, Jim Hall of Sardinia, Ohio; and three sisters, Bessie Davis of Dayton, Ohio and Dorothy Nelson and Helen Fisher, both of Cincinnati.
Remembrance services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friend may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover. followed by a gathering in First Southern Baptist Church, South Little Creek Road, Dover.

Helen Jaeger, 96
DOVER - Helen Jaeger of Dover died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. She was 96.
Mrs. Jaeger was born in Homestead, Pa., daughter of the late Michael Anna Tkach Ritoch.
She had lived in Garfield, N.J., prior to moving to Dover in 1973 and had been a homemaker for all of her adult life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Jaeger in 1967; three brothers; and two sisters.
She is survived by a son and daughter in-law, James H. and Donna Jaeger of Glendale, Mo.; a granddaughter, Marcy Jaeger of Glendale, and a niece, Anne Kuipers of Dover, Del.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Cross Church, South State Street, Dover.

James C. Knotts Sr., 77
SMYRNA - James C. Knotts Sr. of Smyrna died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 77.
Mr. Knotts was born April 6, 1925, near Middletown, son of the late Walter B. and Clara Roy Knotts.
He farmed in the Smyrna area most of his life and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.
He enjoyed card games, visiting friends and reminiscing.
Mr. Knotts was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Middletown and the American Legion David C. Harrison Post 14 in Smyrna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George W. Knotts; a sister, Mildred Brittingham and a grandson, James Cody Knotts.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adeline Bigelow Knotts; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Crawford Knotts Jr. and Cheryl A. Knotts of Smyrna; four brothers, William R. Knotts of Dover, Ernest A. Knotts and Ralph V. Knotts, both of Magnolia and Frank T. Knotts of Smyrna; a sister, Anna Strimel of Dover; and three grandchildren, Jodie C. Knotts, John C. Knotts and Jace C. Knotts, all of Smyrna.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Smyrna Wesleyan Church, 433 West Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Liselotte Tatsch Gonzalez, 79
MILLINGTON, Md. - Liselotte Tatsch Gonzalez of Millington died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital. She was 79.
Mrs. Gonzalez was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Kirn/Nahe, Germany.
She worked for several years at Hollins Department Store, Millington, and later worked at Millington Hardware.
She loved to cook and bake. She enjoyed her flower garden and embroidery. Most importantly, she loved being a mother and raising her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Gonzalez Jr., in 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Frank M. Gonzalez III and Raymond "Corky" Gonzalez, both of Millington; two daughters, Geri Garvine of Sudlersville and Kristine Gon-Reid of Susanville, Calif.; a sister, Irene of Germany; a brother, Karl Heinz Tatsch of Kirn/Nahe; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home PA, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington.

Walter Barrett Harris, 84
STILL POND NECK, Md. - Walter Barrett Harris of Still Pond Neck died Tuesday, May, 13, 2003. He was 84.
Mr. Harris was born in Baltimore, son of the late Walter B. and Mary Harper Harris.
He attended grade school in Betterton. He graduated from Chestertown High School in 1936 and attended Washington College (class of 1940).
He devoted his life to his Bloomingneck Farm and the Chesapeake Bay.
More than 30 years ago, he promoted and pioneered no-till farming in Kent County. Mr. Harris was instrumental in developing Camp Howell, a Boy Scout retreat. Bloomingneck Farm was recognized as a Maryland Century Farm, and Echo Hill Camp was started in 1951 on the property. Echo Hill Outdoor School was started in 1973 on Bloomingneck Farm.
He was awarded the title "Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay 2000" by the state of Maryland and was a board member for many Chesapeake Bay organizations instrumental in saving and developing the Chesapeake Bay.
Mr. Harris was active in Kent County community affairs. He was past president of the Kent County Historical Society and was a Kent Conservation District supervisor, a founder and past president of the Kent County Heritage Trust and founder of Kent County Museum Inc. He also was a member of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay Coastal Resources Advisory Committee, the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, the Kent County Forestry Board and the Kent County Ethics Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret M. "Dolly" Harris; four children, Heather H. Adams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Holly H. McCoy of Still Pond Neck, Hunter Harper Harris of Easton and Hayes Hamilton Harris of Vero Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Private, graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Still Pond Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Hughes will officiate.

Klein K. Haddaway Jr., 75
BETHANY BEACH - Klein K. Haddaway Jr. of Bethany Beach died of complications of cancer Thursday, May 15, 2003, in his home. He was 75.
Mr. Haddaway was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a ticket sales agent for United Airlines at Washington National Airport.
He is survived by his twin brother, Bryan; a niece; three nephews; and three grandnephews.
Burial will be private.

Thelma G. Kennard, 93
SMYRNA - Thelma G. Kennard of Smyrna died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 93.
Ms. Kennard was born March 23, 1910, in Philadelphia.
She was a homemaker and, for the last several years, had been a patient at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill, Smyrna.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at noon Monday in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

Eleanor D. Menough, 86
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Eleanor D. Menough of Chestertown and formerly of Eagar, Ariz., died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Menough was born Feb. 19, 1917, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Rev. Gustav and Emilie Herbstreit Kinderman.
She was educated in Germany and spoke fluent German. She returned to the United States at age 17 and furthered her education at Monte Vista Christian Academy, Santa Cruz, Calif.
Mrs. Menough married Frederick W. Menough, then of Oxford, Pa., and was the comptroller for ProGas, a propane gas business which they owned and operated in Springerville, Ariz., until Mr. Menough's death in 1990. She continued to reside in Arizona until 1997; then, she moved to the East Coast to live near her family. She loved the open spaces of the West.
She is survived by seven nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home PA, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. J.H. VanSant will officiate.

Maranatha 'Nick' Rogers, 88
MILLVILLE - Maranatha "Nick" Rogers of Millville and formerly of Selbyville died Thursday, May 15, 2003, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. He was 88.
Mr. Rogers was a self-employed public accountant and professional organist.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sadie Marie Campbell Rogers; and a son, Noel Rogers.
He is survived by his wife, Marion E. Rogers; two sons, George T. and Gary W. Rogers; a daughter, Mary Lou Straughan; two sisters, Delaphine Vogel and Leanor Smith; six grandchildren, Kristie Studdard, Scott Rogers, Glen Rogers, Sarah Haines, and Erin and Paige Straughan; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Mariners Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.

Ernest Whitfield, 83
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Ernest Whitfield of Chestertown died of pneumonia Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 83.
Mr. Whitfield was born and raised in Wilmington, N.C., son of the late Ruth M.W. Whitfield.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. While in the service, he received the Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, he European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, a Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal. After serving a two-year term of enlistment, he received an honorable discharge in 1946.
Mr. Whitfield worked for Vita Foods Co., the Laborers International Union of North America Local, the Kent County public-school system and the Imperial Hotel.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Brown Whitfield; and two brothers, James Whitfield and Clarence Whitfield.
He is survived by three stepchildren, Margaret Cannon and James Saunders, both of Bigwoods, and Leslie "Joe" Brown of Dover, Del.; four sisters-in-law, Irene Hamilton of Fairlee, Geraldine Tiller of Bigwoods, Dorothy Brown of Bronx, N.Y., and Elsie Brown of Baltimore; a brother-in-law, William "Sonny" Brown of Pondtown; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at New Christian Chapel of Love, Bigwoods, near Worton, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Anthony Brown will officiate.

Albert M. Konschak, 82
HARTLY - Albert M. Konschak of Hartly died Wednesday May 16, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 82.
Mr. Konschak was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Marydel, son of the late John and Pauline Zarbok Konschak.
He lived and farmed in Hartly most of his life.
Mr. Konschak served in the 198th Coast Artillery of the Delaware National Guard.
He was instrumental in getting soil conservation and ditching practices established in Kent County.
Mr. Konschak was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Dover; a charter member of the Hartly Lions Club; a former member of the Hartly Fire Co.; and served many years as a member of the Hartly school board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John Konschak, Otto Konschak, Richard Konschak and Gus Konschak; and two sisters, Julia Hintz and Emma Hintz.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susanne Lissy Konschak; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jack Conrad and Nancy and Roger Hazzard, all of Dover, and Marlene and Linden Boyer of Smyrna; a brother, William Konschak of Dover; three sisters, Paula Bergmann, Wanda Belinsky and Martha Karutz, all of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Jennifer Rambo, Marcy Boyer, Lin Boyer and Jackie Conrad; and a great-grandchild, Sarah Rambo.
Friends may call from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday at Faries Funeral Home, 1250 S. Governors Ave., Dover.

Ruby Rosyln Reavis, 57
DOVER - Ruby Rosyln Reavis died after a short illness Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 57.
Ms. Reavis was born July 9, 1943, in New Rochelle, Westchester County, N.Y., daughter of Charles Reavis and Ruby Reavis.
She attended and graduated from New Rochelle High School.
She worked as a switchboard operator for many years.
Ms. Reavis loved reading and watching her movies with a nice cold Pepsi.
She is survived by a son, Michael Reavis; a daughter, Nikki Perry; two grandchildren, Tyrel Perry and Kikeyra Richardson of Dover; and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home of her daughter, Nikki Perry, 260 N. Governors Blvd., Capital Park, Dover.
