Elwood C. Altemose, 74
SMYRNA - Elwood C. Altemose of Smyrna died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 74.
Mr. Altemose was born in Palmer, Pa., son of the late Vernon and Anna Miller Altemose.
He served in the U.S. Air force for more than 21 years as an air traffic controller and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1968.
After the Air Force, Mr. Altemose worked for the U.S. Postal Service, delivering mail to south Dover until 1989.
He loved gardening, yard work and working around the house.
Mr. Altemose was a member of the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post 2 in Dover, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8801 and of the Korean War Veterans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, in 1999.
He is survived by his daughters, Claudia Phillipson of Salisbury, Md., and Deborah Holland of Delmar, Md.; a brother, Vernon Altemose Jr. of Easton, Pa.; three sisters, Marian Starner and Francis Stoudt, both of Nazareth, Pa., and Alice Pristash of Tatamy, Pa.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

William Lennon Brodes, 69
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - William Lennon Brodes of Cape St. Claire, near Annapolis, died, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in his home, of natural causes after a long illness. He was 69.
Mr. Brodes was born Dec. 26, 1932, in Easton.
He graduated from Hurlock High School, Class of 1949.
Mr. Brodes served in the U.S. Army from 1952-55, attaining the rank of private first class.
He retired from Preston 151 Line Trucking Co. with more than 40 years of service as a truck driver.
He enjoyed fishing, boating and traveling to the Florida Keys. He was affectionately known as the unofficial "mayor of Beulah."
Mr. Brodes was a member of the Methodist faith, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5246 in Federalsburg and a member of American Legion Post 243 in Hurlock. He also was a member of Teamsters Local 557.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Hugg.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anne Franklin Kirby; three daughters, Cheryle L. Lopez, Billie Anne Ellis and Carole A. Hugg, all of Annapolis; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery of Beulah, near Hurlock.

Alvin K. 'Al' Hackett Sr., 77
ANGOLA - Alvin K. "Al" Hackett Sr. of Pot-Nets, near Angola, formerly of Stanton, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002. He was 77.
Mr. Hackett was born June 30, 1925, son of the late Harold and Margaret (Hackett) Davis.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, 3rd Division, 9th Regiment, 1st Battalion, A Company, on Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Chi Chi Jima.
Mr. Hackett was retired and the former owner of The Buffet Shop, a delicatessen/catering business, in Stanton from 1958 to 1987. The Buffet Shop also was a morning gathering place for a small group of his close friends in the Stanton community.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending the annual Marine Corps reunion. He also enjoyed baking, cooking and gardening. He felt everyone he met was a friend.
Mr. Hackett was a member of Armstrong Masonic Lodge 26 for more than 50 years and was a charter member of Naomi Chapter 20.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Hannah E. Hackett, in 1994.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, A. Kenneth Hackett Jr. and Karen Hackett of Wilmington and William E.G. Hackett Sr. and Carol Hackett of Newark; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan D. and Tom Smith of Dover; 14 grandchildren, Ken III, Joe, C.R., and Missy, Billy Jr., Jon, Charley, George, Jerry, Keith, Marie, and Amber, Michael and Dianne; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jonny Jr.; and a brother, James Hackett of Hockessin.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis St., Newport.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, North Du Pont Highway, New Castle.

Anna C. Pippin, 60
UPPER FAIRMOUNT, Md. - Anna C. Pippin of Upper Fairmont died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury. She was 60.
She was born March 4, 1942, in Delair, N.J., daughter of the late Michael Petitte Sr. and Anna Rose Petitte.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Petitte Jr.; and a sister, Rosemary Villinger.
She is survived by her husband, Robert P. Pippin Sr.; a daughter, Barbara A. Phelan of Smyrna, Del.; three sons, Robert P. Pippin Jr. of Princess Anne, James T. Pippin of Medford, N.J., and Kenneth W. Pippin of Lincoln University, Pa.; two sisters, Patricia McCormick of Delair and Theresa Dreadin of Mount Holly, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

Harry E. Carroll, 80
GREENWOOD - Harry E. Carroll of Greenwood died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 80.
Mr. Carroll was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Denton, Md., son of the late Houston and Nora Carroll.
He was a carpenter for 57 years. He worked many years for Donald Melson Construction, then for his daughter and son-in-law at American Construction.
She loved fishing and spending time with his family and his dog, Angel.
Mr. Carroll was a member of Denton Church of Christ in Christian Union.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Houston Carroll and three sisters, Marie Mack, Dorothy Rogers and Virginia Thomas.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marie Carroll; a son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Margie Carroll of Greenwood; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Robert Cannon of Bridgeville; three granddaughters, Gina and her husband, Neil Anger of Bridgeville and Abigail Carroll and Angela Carroll, both of Greenwood; a great-granddaughter, Jenna Marie Anger of Bridgeville; and a sister, Jeanie Hilton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Denton Church of Christ, Christian Union, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Bloomery Cemetery, Federalsburg, Md.

John Franklin 'Sonny' Fluharty, 66
WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. - John Franklin "Sonny" Fluharty of Williamstown died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in J.F.K. Memorial Hospital, Turnersville. He was 66.
Mr. Fluharty was born in Denton, Md., son of the late Harry Rufus Fluharty, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Sharp Fluharty.
He was a graduate of Caroline High School, Denton, class of 1955.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Fluharty was a service representative for Social Security in Woodlawn, Md. retiring in 1995. He was also a cashier at Billy's in Atlantic City, retiring in April 2002.
He is survived by a brother Harry 'Buddy' Fluharty, Jr. of Denton, Md.; three sisters, Betty J. Tarbutton of Dover, Del., Peggy J. Kautz of Carlisle, Pa. and Nancy Willis of Denton.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 South Second St., Denton, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, near Denton.

Mary Marie Harvath, 90
DOVER - Mary Marie Harvath of Dover died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in her home. She was 90.
Ms. Harvath was born Sept. 1, 1912, in Passaic, N.J., daughter of the late Stephen and Mary (Matthews) Harvath.
She was a practical nurse in the Williamsport, Md., area for many years. She also worked at Richardson & Robbins in Dover.
Ms. Harvath was a member of the Dover Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She is survived by two sons, William H. Wireman and Edward S. Wireman, both of Dover; two sisters, Catherine Flizak of Burlington, N.J., and Ruth Garrow of Dover; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Remembrance services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Memorial Park, Dover.
Myrtle Mary Marker Lowe, 76
GEORGETOWN - Myrtle Mary Marker Lowe of Georgetown died Friday, May 16, 2003, in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. She was 76.
Mrs. Lowe was born in Ellendale, daughter of the late Harry Oscar and Lina Gertrude Pusey Marker.
She was a bus driver for the State of Delaware for 25 years, retiring in 1980.
A lifelong resident of Sussex County, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Playing bingo was one of her favorite hobbies.
Mrs. Lowe was a member of McColley's United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Althea Pepper and Beatrice Webb; and two brothers, Oscar Marker and Raymond Marker.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Lowe; two sons, Gary Morris of Lincoln and Ken Morris of Pensacola, Fla.; three daughters, Debbie Smith of Harbeson, Brenda Grulke of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Pam Pratt of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister; Alberta Rust of Redden; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be noon Monday in Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in McColley's Cemetery, Redden.

James C. Maxwell, 65
WILMINGTON - James C. Maxwell of Wilmington died suddenly Friday, May 16, 2003, in Mendenhall, Pa., surrounded by friends and family. He was 65.
Mr. Maxwell was a 1958 graduate of Salesianum School, and attended the University of Delaware.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Essex.
He worked for Woolworth's for five years. Previously, he was employed by Schmidt's Bakery for 15 years and Bancroft Mills for eight years.
Mr. Maxwell was a member of the Resurrection Parish, where he served as an usher. His other memberships included the Moose Lodge of New Castle and the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael's Council.
He is survived, and will be dearly missed, by his wife of 34 years, Anne Marie (Ryan) Maxwell; three daughters and a son-in-law, Bernardette Maxwell of Rehoboth Beach, Jennifer Maxwell of Atglen, Pa., and Melissa (Maxwell) Parks and Larry Parks of Pennsville, N.J.; a sister, Sandy Ghione of Elsmere; two nieces and their husbands, Linda and Doug Frey and Lisa and Michael Buchanan; and a nephew, Frank Ghione.

Ruby Rosyln Reavis, 57
DOVER - Ruby Rosyln Reavis died after a short illness Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 57.
Ms. Reavis was born July 9, 1943, in New Rochelle, Westchester County, N.Y., daughter of the late Charles Reavis and Ruby Reavis.
She attended and graduated from New Rochelle High School.
She worked as a switchboard operator for many years.
Ms. Reavis loved reading and watching her movies with a nice cold Pepsi.
She is survived by a son, Michael Reavis; a daughter, Nikki Perry; two grandchildren, Tyrel Perry and Nikeyra Richardson of Dover; and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home of her daughter, Nikki Perry, 260 N. Governors Blvd., Capital Park, Dover.

Stephanie England, 43
FREDERICA - Stephanie England of Frederica died after a courageous battle with cancer Thursday, May 17, 2001, she was surrounded by family and friends. She was 43.
Ms. England was born June 21, 1957, in Germany, daughter of James and Mary Ann England of Dover.
She was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School Class of 1975. While in high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, French Club and Who's Who, and attended the University of Delaware for three years.
She worked for AETNA U.S. Healthcare as a benefits analysts. She also had worked for Boscov's of Dover as a manager in the shoe department.
Ms. England enjoyed bowling and bowled with the Sunday Nite Mixed and in 1996 took first place in the Boscov's Mix.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Joshua Brimer, who she called "the greatest gift she ever received;" four sisters and their husbands, Judy Ridgeway-Mills and Mitchell Mills of Virginia Beach, Va., Paula and Joseph "Butch" Cassidy and Tamara and Pierino Vicere, all of Camden and Barbara and Charles Ascarino of Dover; a brother, James M. England of Dover; and 12 nieces and nephews, Allen W. Martin III, Erin J. Ridgeway, Charles J Ascarino, Amber Ascarino, Johnny Ascarino, Jacqueline Daub, Jeremy Cancelo, Toni Vicere, Marissa Vicere, Melinda Mills, Joseph Mills, and Timothy Mills.

Jackie L. Good, 55
DENTON, Md. - Jackie L. Good of Denton died Thursday, May 17, 2001, in his home. He was 55.
Mr. Good was born in Denton, son of the late Wilson Good and Ethel "Effie" Elizabeth Harmon Good.
He was a 1965 graduate of North Caroline High School.
Mr. Good was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and the Maryland National Guard.
For thirty years, Mr. Good had been a cable technician for C&P, Bell Atlantic and Verizon telephone companies.
He enjoyed antiqueing, collecting baseball cards and coins.
Mr. Good was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Denton, a manager for Denton Little League and was a past president of the Denton Jaycees. He was a life member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. and served many years on their Board of Directors and as a line officer.
He is survived by his wife, Jean A. Good of Denton; two sons, Eric K. Good and his fiancé, Eileen Dempse and Justin T. Good, all of Denton; two brothers, Charles "Bud" Good of Seaford, Del., and Paul "Pinky" Good of Denton; three sisters, Frannie Ireland of Denton, Wanda "Unkie" Baugus of Denton, and Katherine "Kitty" E. Patrick of Laurel, Del., numerous nieces and nephews and his dog, Salem.

Mildred D. Ciuba, 96
LEWES - Mildred D. Ciuba of Lewes died Saturday, May 17, 2003, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 96.
Mrs. Ciuba was born March 6, 1907, oldest of 11 children, in Bayone, N.J., daughter of the late Ignace Jan Zendarski and Michalina Rzepinska.
She retired from the Simmons Mattress Company in 1953 after 15 years of work with the company. One of her main accomplishments with the company was being an expert seamstress involving the sewing of the large parachutes used to land large pieces of equipment during World War II and teaching others the procedure.
Mrs. Ciuba was a member of the St. Jude the Apostle Church, Lewes and was formerly a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Apopka, Fla. and St. Hedwigs Catholic Church in Elizabeth, N.J., where she had been very involved with the sodality society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony W. Ciuba, in 1993.
She is survived by two sons, Anthony E. Ciuba of Lewes and Charles H. Ciuba Sr. of Oceanside, Calif.; five sisters, Tessie Agostino of Tucson, Ariz., Steffie Torrealba of Santa Fe, Texas, Jean Dixon of Daytona Beach, Fla., Josephine Szelewski of Tucson, and Veronica Morse of Bloomfield, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Louvenia H. Fassett, 87
BISHOPVILLE, Md. - Louvenia H. Fassett of Bishopville died Friday, May 16, 2003, in the Berlin Nursing Home, Berlin. She was 87.
Mrs. Fassett was born in Berlin, daughter of the late Sidney and Mae Smith Purnell.
She worked in the housekeeping department of the Santa Maria Hotel in Ocean City, retiring in 1981 after 30 years of service.
Mrs. Fassett was a member of the Curtis United Methodist Church, Bishopville, where she sang in the senior choir and was also an usher. She was a member of the Missionary Society and the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Fassett, in 1977.
She is survived by two sons, John C. Fassett of Elizabeth, N.J. and Eugene M. Fassett of Moreno Valley, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Curtis United Methodist Church, Campbelltown Road, Bishopville, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Robert B. Starkey will officiate.
Burial will be in Curtis Cemetery, Bishopville.

Mary Helen 'Mimi' Quillen, 57
SEAFORD - Mary Helen "Mimi" Quillen of Seaford died Sunday, May 18, 2003, after a car accident on Saturday, May 17, 2003. She was 57.
Mrs. Quillen was born July 4, 1945, in Salisbury, Md., daughter of the late Lloyd Franklin and Sara White Beard.
She was a 1964 graduate of Seaford High School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death be her husband, William Dale Quillen, in 1985.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Dale and Melle Quillen of Seaford; seven sisters, Jeanne B. Klemens of Bear, Barbara B. Widdowson of Seaford, Arinda B. Belote and her husband, Gwynn, of Seaford, Leona B. Tull and her husband, Donald, of Seaford, Sara B. Johnson of Boise, Idaho, Ellen B. Messick and her husband, Ronnie, of Bridgeville, Betsy B. Carmine and her husband, Donny, of Seaford; two brothers, Lloyd F. Beard and his wife, Dolores, of Seaford, and David B. Beard and his wife, Becki, of Bridgeville, DE. "Aunt Mimi" was clearly loved by her 25 nieces and nephews and 31 great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday in Wesley United Methodist Church, Atlanta Road, Seaford. The Rev. Ed Kuhling will officiate.
