Burdette O. Johnson, 77
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Burdette O. Johnson of Newport News, Va. died of an embolism of the aorta, Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in the Riverside Hospital, Newport News. He was 77.
Mr. Johnson was born in Greenwood, Del., son of the late Otis and Blanch Passwaters Johnson.
He retired as a building maintenance worker at Patrick Henry Hospital.
In his leisure time, he was a woodcrafter who made many beautiful items for his friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Givens Johnson; his second wife of 17 years, Edith Perkins and a stepmother, Hulda Johnson.
He is survived by two sisters, Jeanette and her husband, Robert Lankford of Greenwood and Anita Fischer of Boca Raton, Fla.; three sons, Burdette O. and his wife Linda Johnson of Blades, Del., Dennis R. and his daughter, Elizabeth Johnson of Georgetown, Del., and Kevin and his wife, Donna Miller of Chillacothe, Ohio; six daughters, Marjorie and her husband, Robert Wyatt of Wilmington, Del., Ethel and her husband, Jerry Dill of Felton, Del., Karen and and her husband, Franklin E. Hickman of Camden, Del., Connie Davis of Salisbury, Md., Michelle and her husband, Kipp Downes of Delmar, Del., and Diane Davenport of Newport News; his companions, Kelly Davenport and Brown Dog; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Grace Baptist Church, Seaford, Del.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family requests a donation to his favorite charity. the SPCA of Kent County.

Brock Michael Montague, 17
LAUREL - Brock Michael Montague of Laurel died due to injuries sustained in a auto accident Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002. He was 17.
Brock was born in Seaford, son of Linda Sue Montague of Laurel and Michael Francis Montague of Millville.
Brock was a senior at Laurel High School.
He was a member of the Laurel High School varsity football and baseball teams. He was a member of the Leo Club. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
He loved sports, music and computers.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Joshua Munoz of Laurel and Conner E. and Caleb T. Montague of Millville; maternal grandparents, Angelo and Dot Dulis of Laurel; paternal grandparents, Edward and Carol Montague of Laurel; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Laurel Senior High School Gymnasium, Laurel, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

John Benjamin 'Ben' Spry Jr., 87
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - John Benjamin "Ben" Spry Jr. of Chestertown died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 87.
Mr. Spry was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Chestertown, between Church Hill, and Crumpton, son of the late John Benjamin Sr. and Kathryn Bell Pippin Spry.
He worked on the family farm at a young age and continued to work as a farmer until the late 1930s when he drove trucks for various employers.
On June 14, 1940, he married Shirley June Maslin of Chestertown.
Mr. Spry drove an oil truck for Southern States for 17 years, retiring in 1975.
He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and gardening.
Mr. Spry and his wife resided in Chestertown, where he was a member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Shirley June Spry; two sons, John B. Spry III of Chestertown and Robert Maslin Spry of Fredericksburg, Va.; two daughters, Linda Faye Miller of Dover, Del., and Mary June Beals of Chestertown; a sister, Kathryn Thompson of Centreville, nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Benita Hyland in 2001.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be held in Crumpton Cemetery, Crumpton.

Dorothy L. Lund Bleyer, 73
SMYRNA - Dorothy L. Lund Bleyer of Smyrna died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 73.
Mrs. Bleyer was born June 3, 1929, in Charleston, W.Va., daughter of the late Harold and Nell Pabst.
She graduated from high school in 1947 in Bound Brook, N.J., and attended Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, W.Va., and graduated from Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital in New York City with a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
She worked in hospitals, home-health services and doctor's offices and was a school nurse in the Newark Special School District during the late 1960s and early 1970s. She retired from nursing in 1985. Following retirement, she was active in volunteer work at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio, and the Delaware Home and Hospital in Smyrna.
Mrs. Bleyer enjoyed sewing and crafts.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph F. Lund; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Lund Mauro; and stepchildren, Francis X. Bleyer Jr. and Mary Ellen Bleyer McNair.
She is survived by her husband, Francis X. Bleyer; four daughters, Karen Lund Butela of Dover, Susan Lund Jones of Bel Air, Md., Sarah Lund Etienne of Burke, Va., and Deborra Lund Bury of Evans, Ga.; three step-children, J. Anthony Bleyer of Claymont, Theresa Bleyer Hughes of Bear and Veronica Bleyer Thomson of Dallas; a brother, Harold Pabst of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Leona Jensen Tritch, also of St. Augustine; and 14 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.
Burial will be private.

Alice May Broomall Committee, 85
PHILADELPHIA - Alice May Broomall Committee of Philadelphia died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She was 85.
Mrs. Committee was born in Philadelphia. She was a resident of Darby for many years and Somers Point, N.J. for 20 years. She and her husband spent the last four years in Dover, Del., with their son and daughter-in-law.
She spent her life loving and caring for her family.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Tony "Rookie" Committee; four children, Anthony Committee Jr. and Patricia Davis, both of Sharon Hill, Dennis Committee of Dover and Maria Hoyt of Springfield; two sisters, Dorothy Seeley of Morton and Florence Ernst of Drexel Hill; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Marvil Funeral Home, 1110 Main St., Darby.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Spirit Church, Sharon Hill.
Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.

Virginia Woodall Hebb, 87
EASTON, Md. - Virginia Woodall Hebb of Easton died of natural causes Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, in Heart Fields in Easton. She was 87.
Mrs. Hebb was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Crumpton, daughter of the late George Warfield and Grace Biddle Woodall.
Her parents raised her and her siblings in Kenton, Del.
Mrs. Hebb married Charles Parish Hebb, then of Baltimore, Oct. 15, 1939. They resided in the Guilford area of Baltimore and raised five children. Mrs. Hebb worked for many years at the American Heart Association in Baltimore, while Mr. Hebb owned and operated both Ideal Transfer and Hebb Produce Co.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dec. 24, 1991; her oldest son, C. Parish Hebb Jr., who had lived in Midlothian, Va., April 4, 1987; and two brothers, Julian Woodall and George Woodall.
She is survived by a son, Ronald W. Hebb of Pasadena; three daughters, Carol H. Landrum of Santa Fe, N.M., Sharon H. Braden of Centreville and Virginia P. Hebb of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Jesse T. Woodall of Harrington, Del., and Franklin R. Woodall of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; 12 grandchildren, C. Parish Hebb III, John A. Hebb, Lori Patricia White and Carrie L. Hebb, all of Richmond, Va., Patrick Hartley, Shea H. Sainz and Edward J. Hartley III, all of California, and Ronald W. Hebb Jr., Elizabeth Jean Danz, Brien C. Hebb, Meredith H. Braden and Parish M. Braden, all of Maryland; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Cathedral Church of the Incarnation, St. Paul Street and University Parkway in Baltimore.

Myrtle 'Mody' Hires, 73
LEWES - Myrtle "Mody" Hires of Lewes died of heart failure Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Harrison House Nursing Home, Georgetown. She was 73.
Mrs. Hires was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Richard P. Hires; two sons, Donald and Leland; two daughters, Sharon and Jamie; three sisters, Dianne, Shirley and Thelma Mae.
Services will be noon Saturday in Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. Dr. Harry Hughes will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.

John G. 'JR' Richards Jr., 55
SMYRNA - John G. "JR" Richards Jr. of Smyrna died Saturday May 17, 2003, in Christiana Hospital. He was 55.
Mr. Richards was born Aug. 27, 1947, in Swedesboro, N.J., son of John G. and Dorothy Murphy Richards of Smyrna.
He graduated from Stanton Military Academy in Stanton, Va., and attended Delaware State University for two years.
He was a service manager for First State Equipment Company in Smyrna.
Mr. Richards was very active in sporting clay, skeet and trap shooting and was named to the Delaware Sporting Clay Team. In addition to shooting, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding and was very involved in building his own racing and modified sprint cars.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna.

Vincent Torres Jr., 74
WYOMING - Vincent Torres Jr. of Wyoming died Friday, May 16, 2003, in Silver Lake Nursing Center, Dover. He was 74.
Mr. Torres was born June 21, 1928, in Philadelphia, son of the late Vincent Torres Sr. and Frances Cozzor Torres.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for 24 years.
Mr. Torres was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Heavy Industrial Equipment and Carpenter's Union, Local 542. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Harrington since 1964.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Frank Torres, and a brother, Frank Torres Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Torres; a son, Rick Torres of Felton; two daughters and son-in-law, Theresa and Jack Warrington of Marydel and Frances and Albert Aviles of Camden-Wyoming; six grandchildren, Rick Torres Jr. of Dover, Jeffery Torres of Felton, Michelle Torres of Dover, Denise Moen of Harrington, Vincent Warrington of Magnolia and Albert Aviles Jr. of Wyoming; five great-grandchildren, Jenna Warrington of Harrington, Kellyann Torres of Felton, Alexa Rayne Torres of Dover and twins Skylar and Jordon Moen, both of Harrington; a brother-in-law, Richard Lacer of Vineland, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Rose Cataldi and her husband, Joe, of Camden; a special nephew, Frank Torres Jr. of Colorado; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Jessica L. Brooks, 81
LENA, La. - Jessica L Brooks, 81, of Lena died Monday, May 14, 2001, in her home. She was 81.
Mrs. Brooks was the only daughter of the late Pete Burns and Carolyn Estella Jones.
She is survived by a daughter, Vetra L. White of New Castle, Del.; three sons, Peter Brooks of Wilmington, Del., Ray Brooks of New Jersey and David Burns of Newark, Del.; a son-in-law, Walter B. White; two daughters-in-law, Pat Brooks and Clarica Burns; two brothers, Alfred Burns and Clarence Burns; four sisters-in-law; 11 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church, 839 N. Pine St., Wilmington.

Margaret Ann Connolley, 63
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Margaret Ann Connolley of Chestertown died of natural causes Thursday, May 17, 2001, in her home. She was 63.
Mrs. Connolley was born Sept. 24, 1937, in Chestertown, daughter of the late Clarence Edward and Maggie Josephine Patrick Hurd.
She was a 1955 graduate of Chestertown High School.
Mrs. Connolley worked for Fox's Department Store.
On Sept. 24, 1955, she married Francis "Newkie" Connolley Jr., former vice president of printing for Chesapeake Publishing. They lived in Chestertown. Mrs. Connolley worked as a switchboard operator for a few years before retiring in 1959 to raise her family. She was a homemaker until 1977, after her children were raised, when she went to work as a bindery worker with Kent Printing until retiring in the 1990s.
She enjoyed camping and playing cards. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Connelley also was a member of Worton United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 39 years on Feb. 11, 1995.
She is survived by a son, Francis Micheal Connolley III of Chestertown; a daughter, Sandra Kay Connolley Payne of Cordova; two grandchildren, Megan Katharine Payne and Micheal Aaron Connolley; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Connolley Dugas of Annapolis and Jo Ann Connolley of Chestertown.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.

Hollis M. Keck, 74
MILLSBORO - Hollis M. Keck of Millsboro died of cancer Friday, May 18, 2001, in his home. He was 74.
Mr. Keck was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
After high school graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II.
He brought joy to everyone he met, and blessed many people with his witty sense of humor and his ability to fix anything his hands touched.
Mr. Keck was an active member of Gumboro Fellowship Church.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Velma G. Keck; two daughters, Nancy Marcus and her husband, both of Baltimore, and Carol Keck of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two sons, David Keck, and his wife and family of Augusta, Ga., and Bruce Keck of Charleston, S.C.; two stepsons, Gary Kinstler, and his wife, both of Pasadena, Md., and John Kinstler of Gettysburg, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Joan Puckett, and her husband and family of Westminster, Md.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Fulmer of Spring City, Pa.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gumboro Fellowship Church.

Norman Wesley Lord, 89
MILLINGTON, Md. - Norman Wesley Lord of Millington died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 89.
Mr. Lord was born Jan. 20, 1912, in Caroline County, son of the late Clarence and Nettie Williamson Lord.
At a young age, he drove a truck carrying milk for packaging and distribution. He worked for Leeds Travelware, Clayton, Del., for several years before working at Metalcraft, Smyrna, Del., from which he retired in the 1970s.
He was married in 1950 to Edna Wilson; they lived in Chestertown.
After retirement, Mr. Lord worked part time cutting lawns. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife in 1967.
He is survived by a son, John Lord of Millington; three daughters, Rachel Lord of Baltimore, Bonnie Stafford of Millington and JoeAnn Beverly of California; eight stepchildren; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be at a later date.

Sister M. Marcella Marioneck, 98
RIDGELY, Md. - Sister M. Marcella Marioneck of Ridgely died of natural causes Saturday, May 19, 2001, in St. Gertrude's Infirmary, Ridgely. She was 98.
Sister Marcella was born Aug. 12, 1902, in Rheinpfalz, Germany, daughter of the late Philip and Maria Schwarzweller Marioneck.
She entered the Benedictine Sisters Dec. 15, 1923; took her final vows July 11, 1928, in the St. Gertrude's Convent, Ridgely; and celebrated her Diamond Jubilee Nov. 11, 2000. She lived her life in faithful service, providing support services at the Mother House and missions in the Wilmington Diocese.
On Aug. 22, 1983, Sister Marcella received a citation from the Maryland Department of Agriculture, reading as follows: "Be it Known: That on behalf of Maryland Agriculture: For her concern for the environment and for her outstanding beautification program, she has provided beauty for generations to come." The citation was signed by Wayne A. Cawley Jr., secretary of the department.
She is survived by her Benedictine sisters, many friends and many nieces and nephews in Germany.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 5 p.m. Monday at St. Gertrude's Monastery, Ridgely, where friends may call from 3 until 4 p.m., followed by a vigil service at 4:15 p.m.
Burial will be in St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Ridgely.

Mary Elva Mosley, 74
UPPER PITTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Mary Elva Mosley of Upper Pittsgrove Township died of natural causes Thursday, May 17, 2001, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden, where she had been a patient for the past 15 days. She was 74.
Mrs. Mosley was born in the Palatine section of Pittsgrove Township and was the daughter of the late Edward and Mamie Durham Morgan.
She was raised by her uncle, Leamond Morgan, and had resided in Upper Pittsgrove for most of her life.
Mrs. Mosley was a seamstress and, before retiring nine years ago, she had been employed at Elmer Manufacturing Co. for 28 years.
She was an avid gardener and food canner, and loved raising flowers.
Mrs. Mosley was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Elders.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Araminta Jackson; and a brother, Norris Durham.
She is survived by her husband, Earnest G. Mosley Sr.; a daughter, the Rev. Carol M. Davies of Sewell, N.J.; a son, Earnest G. Mosley Jr. of Upper Pittsgrove Township; a sister, Selina M. Pierce of Pittsgrove Township; and three grandchildren, Michael Davies, Kevin Davies and Brian Davies, all of Sewell.
Friends may call from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, Cheswold, Del., where friends also may call one hour prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Ronald Wuest will officiate.
Burial will be in the church's cemetery.
