Billie Jo Lauer
Mrs. Billie Jo Lauer of Old Town passed away Monday, September 13, 2004 in Moultrie, Georgia where she was presently residing with her son. She was 84. She was a member of the Eastern Star since 1947 belonging to the Queen Ester #4 in Clearwater, FL, the Mannington, West Virginia chapter in a Honorary position and the Chiefland Chapter, #251. She was a member of the Old Town VFD since 1985, a member of WWII Club in Old Town, the Garden Club Magnolia in Moultrie, GA, the Moultrie, GA Museum Colquitt History and the Moultrie Lion’s Club.
She is survived by her husband William Lauer of Old Town, FL, son, Joe (Babs) Thomas of Sylvester, GA; brother, Gene (Betty) Lauer of Palm Coast, FL; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Opal Ferguson and brother Harry Moore.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, September 18, 2004 at 11:00am at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jake Cravey officiating. Burial followed at Old McCrabb Cemetery. A visitation was held on Friday, September 17, 2004 between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm at the funeral home.

Edward Roosevelt Osteen
Mr. Edward Roosevelt Osteen passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, FL. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Osteen was appointed as Constable for the Town of Cross City in 1960, until 1963, at which time he was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in Dixie County and served for 28 years until 1991 when he retired. Mr. Osteen owned and operated Ed Osteen Construction Land Clearing and Septic Tank. At various times he owned sawmills and cattle ranches. He also served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a Baptist.
Mr. Osteen is survived by his wife, Martha Jane Osteen of Cross City, FL; sons, Buddy Osteen and Guy Osteen, both of Cross City, FL; daughters, Vickie Langford of Immokalee, FL, and Cynthia “Doodle” Moore of Lakeland, FL; brothers, Tommy Osteen and Bobby Osteen, both of Cross City, FL; sisters, Pat Medlin and Ina McLeon, both of Cross City, FL; he has 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, September 17, 2004 at 11:00am at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Robson, Rev. Jake Cravey and Rev. Wayne Allen officiating. Burial followed at the Cross City Cemetery. A visitation was held on Thursday, September 16, 2004, between the hours of 6:00-8:00pm at the funeral home.

Mildred Johnson O’Steen
Mildred J. O’Steen of Old Town died Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at Shands at AGH in Gainesville, FL. She was 76.
Mrs. O’Steen was born in DeRosset, Tennessee and moved to Old Town from Suwannee eight years ago. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Cross City and enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Her husband Percy D. O’Steen preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors include nieces Glenda Poole of Bell, Shirley Moore of Fanning Springs, Teresa Ussery of Palatka, Sandra Driggers of Green Cove Springs, Anita Estever of Gainesville and Vicki O’Steen of Jacksonville; nephews, W.D. O’Steen and Riley Junior O’Steen both of Chiefland, and Franklin O’Steen, Sr. of Otter Creek; and brother-in-law, Carl O’Steen of High Springs.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00am, Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Cross City with Brother Jim Hurst conducting the service. Burial was in the Mt. Horeb Cemetery under the direction of Evans-Carter Funeral Home. Visitation was held on Friday, September17, 2004 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home.

Sage Gabriel
Mr. Sage Gabriel passed away on Monday, September 20, 2004, at his residence in Old Town, FL. He was 67 years of age. Mr. Gabriel moved to Old Town from Pensacola, FL, in 1990. He was a commercial fisherman retiring in 1974. Mr. Gabriel attended college at UCLA for two years. Mr. Gabriel was a member of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard, during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was also a life member of the ABATE Motorcycle Association and the NRA.
Mr. Gabriel is survived by his wife, Shirley F. Gabriel of Old Town, FL; sons, Allen Gabriel of Colorado Springs, CO, Irving Gabriel of Ft. Pierce, FL, and Verner Gabriel of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters, Irene Randell of Palm Bay, FL, and Sheryl Cains of Waco, TX; he has 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Joseph Henry VanHook
Mr. Joseph Henry VanHook of Cross City, Florida died Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was 68.
Mr. VanHook was a retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant. He had served over twenty years in the Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam, and was a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen Allen (Rick) of Trenton; stepson, Larry Sykes of Panama City; a brother Bill VanHook of Summerset, KY; sister Wanda Holt of Summerest, KY; grandchildren, Shelby and Megan Marshell, Dane Allen, Michael and Carol Sykes; and great-granddaughter, Kyndall Herring.

Edith Virgie Bunch
Edith Virgie Bunch, 77, of Waynesboro, Mississippi died September 17, 2004 at Forrest General Hospital.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, M.J. Bunch of Waynesboro; one son Bobby Bunch of Waynesboro, VA; two brothers, Homer Stevens of Satsuma, AL and Clinton Faye Stevens of Bracy, VA; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held September 20th at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Dykes and Rev. Jack Jones officiating.
Interment followed at the Corinth Cemetery.
The Bunches lived in Cross City twelve years while employed with Continental Turpentine and Rosin Corp.
Rendy C. Laidler
Ms. Rendy C. Laidler passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at the Cross City Rehabilitation Center. She was 84 years of age. Ms. Laidler was a lifetime resident of Cross City and she attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Cross City, FL.
Ms. Laidler is survived by her daughters, Catherine Jones and Christine Chewning, both of Cross City, FL; son Billy Crawley of Lake Panasoffkee, FL; sisters, Aldie Goodson and Lula Mae Bennett, both of Cross City, FL; brother C.L. Goodson, Jr. of Cross City, FL. She has 10 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 2:00 pm at the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. L.E. Ward, Rev. Paul Tyson, and Rev. Scott Gantt officiating. Burial followed at the Cross City Cemetery. A visitation was held on Wednesday, September 22, 2004, between the hours of 6:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home.
