CARSWELL - E.W. Judge Carswell, civic leader, folklorist, historian, and retired columnist for the Pensacola News Journal, died, Wed. 41101 in Chipley, FL. He was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Holmes County, FL. Mr. Carswell served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Arcadia, LA and attended Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA, where he was editor of the campus newspaper (before and after his WWII service), and president of his fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon. While in the U. S. 2nd Army Corps (with 597 days of combat) he founded a newspaper, the Barracks Bag Express, circulated to troops in Europe during WWII. After returning from the war, he completed his B.A. in journalism at Louisiana Tech in 1946, staying on as assistant professor for 3 years. Mr. Carswell returned to Milton, FL in 1949, to become editor of the Milton Press Gazette. Recognized as an author, educator, historian and community leader, he chaired several northwest Florida historical societies and served on more than 25 boards, committees and advisory groups throughout the state, among these the Rural Development Council, the Florida Farmers Home Administration Advisory Committee, and the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials. He served in 1960 as president of Chipley Kiwanis Club and was also a founding board member of the First Bank of Holmes County. In 1963, he was named recipient of the Florida Press Association Editorial Oscar in the weekly newspaper division. He was named Floridas Man of the Year for Agriculture in 1966, and in 1976 was awarded a Bicentennial Patriot Medal for efforts to improve the quality of life for fellow citizens. Mr. Carswell also served on the Florida Folklife Council and in 1989 received the Florida Folk Heritage Award. From 1963 to 1967 he was mayor of Chipley. He is the author of Tempestuous Triangle, Holmesteading: The History if Holmes County, Florida, Washington: Florida's 12 County, among many other books and booklets about the history and folklore of his beloved Florida Panhandle. Louisiana Tech University honored him in 1992 with the Tower Medallion Award, which honors alumni who have distinguished themselves by exceptional achievement, community service, and humanitarian activities, and brought permanent recognition by including him in the universitys Hall of Distinguished Alumni. In 1996, he was profiled by Kevin M. McCarthy in the book 20th Century Florida Authors. Mr. Carswell is survived by his wife of 43 years, Catherine Powell Carswell; two daughters and sonsinlaw, Carol Carswell Bhide and Vasant, of Jacksonville, FL and Melody Carswell Berry and David Lexington, KY; a son and daughter-in-law, David Clements Carswell and Mary, of Chipley, FL; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. Carswell and Louise, of Panama City, FL; four sisters, Myrtle Campbell and husband J. Lee, of Milton, FL, Onie B. Howell of Bonifay, FL, Vera Hartzog and Amie Hendrix, of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, David Carswell, Jr., Caleb Wesley Carswell, Kari Frances Carswell, Maya Bhide Ellis, and Monika Carswell Bhide: and a great granddaughter Jennalyn Elizabeth Carswell. Graveside services will be 10:00 Saturday, April 14, 2001 in Bonifay cemetery, Bonifay, Florida. There will not be a Visitation. CICERO - Salvatore Cicero, Jr., 42, of 944 Floyd Avenue, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Rome Nursing Home after a long courageous battle with various illnesses. He was born in Rome on October 10, 1958, a son of Salvatore and Ada Falconio Cicero. Sal attended Catholic and Public schools, graduating from Rome Free Academy. He was a former employee of Rome Cable where he had worked as a security guard. Sal was member of St. John the Baptist Church, and was called to be with the Lord during Holy Week. He was an avid model car enthusiast, loved music and playing the drums. Sal loved being with family and friends and also loved animals very much. He never complained about any medical treatment necessary throughout his illness. Surviving, besides his loving mother, Ada Cicero, Rome, are three beloved sisters and brothers in law, Linda Jennie and her husband Frank, Rome, Jeanette Davis, Rome, Mary Walsh, Jacksonville FL; nieces and nephews, Michele Jennie Hutchins, Audra Jennie Sticca, Heather Jennie, Steve Kenworthy, Angela Davis, Christopher Davis, Kimberleigh Burden, and Gina Mussells; great nieces and nephews, Garrett Hutchins, Aline Sticca, Emily Kenworthy, Matthew Kenworthy, and Donal Burden, Jr.; special aunts and uncles, Anthony and Mary Cicero, Frank and Olga Quatrone, Paul and Phyllis Rizzo, and Rita DePasquale; as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Salvatore Cicero, who passed away April 23, 1970. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 AM at St. John the Baptist Church where relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment in St. Johns cemetery. DAVIS - Mr. Arthur Lee Davis, Sr., of 65 Edgar Street, Atlantic Beach, FL. passed away, April 7, 2001. A native of Edison, Georgia, he has been a resident of Atl. Bch area a number of years. EVANS - Douglas Norman Evans, Jr., 45, passed away April 11, 2001 following a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Doug was raised in Orange Park and has lived in the Area for over 40 years. He was a Letter Carrier at the Baymeadows Post Office for 25 years. Doug loved life and for those who knew him, knows he missed his calling as a standup comic. He loved to make people laugh, the outdoors, and surfing. He was known by his many friends and family as a giver and his sweet spirit will be missed. Survivors include his mother, Casilda Evans; brother, Daniel Evans; sister, Teresa Geshay; half brother, Norman Ross; half sister, Carole Calvert; nephews, Eric Evans and John Robert Geshay; and 1 niece, Rachel Geshay. A memorial service will be held 6:15PM Saturday in Community Presbyterian Church in Atlantic Beach with Rev. Gabe Goodman, officiating. Memorialization will be cremation. GARDNER - Funeral services for Ms. Elizabeth Gardner will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 12:00 PM in the the Rosa Glover Holmes Memorial Chapel. She was preceded in death by her father Rufus Gardner. HAMMOCK - Maud Hammock, 78, of Callahan, Florida passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at her residence. Born September 14, 1922 in Brodhead, Kentucky she has been a resident of the Jacksonville area since 1966. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Hammock is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Warren Hammock and a son, Tony Hammock. She is survived by eight daughters, Sheryl Brown, Carol Jones, Pam Crews, Teresa Durham, Gail Littler, Rhonda Honeycutt, Denise Simons and Lanise Lawson; eight sons, Paul Hammock, Donald Hammock, Eddie Hammock, Terry Hammock, Darrell Hammock, Rickey Hammock, Jimmy Hammock and Charles Hammock; sixty grandchildren; and fifteen greatgrand children. HENDRIX - Mittie Belcher Hendrix, died April 10, 2001. She was a native of Belton, SC and had been a resident of St. Simons Island over 50 years. She was Director of Coastal Center for the Arts and was very active in art, community, and cultural affairs and bringing outside art into the area. She was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Survivors include children, Deborah Hendrix of Gainesville, FL, Emily Slaughter of Brunswick, GA and Carey Hendrix of Los Angeles, CA; brothers, William Wallace Belcher, Jr. of Orlando, FL and Michael P. Belcher of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Eleanor A. Richmond of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. HORNE - D. Howard Horne, age 84, passed away April 11, 2001. He was a native and life long resident of Jacksonville who retired after 46 years with Seaboard Coastline. Mr. Horne served in the U.S. Army seeing action in the Normandy invasion during WWII. His mother, Vesta T. Horne, was the founder of the Woodstock Park Baptist Church where he was a long time member. Currently, he was a member of the Park Lane Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree mason with Lodge #313. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, and golf. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Tanner Horne; sons, David Howard Horne, Jr. (Dale) of Jacksonville, Bill Horne (Charlotte) of Tampa, and Jim Horne (Lori) of Orange Park; grandchildren, Jacquelyn Horne of Jacksonville, Justin and Jordan Horne of Tampa, Ashley, Laura, John David, and Katherine Horne of Orange Park; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday April 13th at Park Lane Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Edgewood cemetery. HOUGH - Mr. Jonathan Andrew Hough age 25 of Jacksonville, FL passed away at his home on April 10, 2001. Mr. Hough attended Pensacola High School and graduated from Clay High School in Clay County FL. Member of Riverside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL and worked for St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. He is survived by his parents Marvin and Mary Nell Hough of Orange Beach, AL; one sister Kelly Hough of Columbia, Missouri; grandparents, Roland and Margaret Walker of Orange Beach, FL and a late Fred and Lucille Hough.
