PURVIS - Ann Purvis, 63, of Callahan, passed away Friday June 1, 2001 at Shands of Jacksonville following a long illness. She was born in Pooler, Georgia, but had lived in Callahan a number of years. Survivors include her husband, William Guy Purvis, Callahan, FL; Two daughters, Sherral (Robert) Pike and Tammy (Mark) VanZant, both of Hilliard, FL; Five sons, S. Guy (Alison) Purvis, Jefferson Lynn Purvis, John David Purvis, Mark (Terri) Purvis, all of Callahan, FL and Clark (Lisa) Purvis of Hilliard, FL; Mother Mildred Clark, Folkston, GA; Sister Harlow (Bob) Philips, Folkston, GA; Three brothers Billy (Mary) Clark, Eastman, GA, Buddy (Jesse) Clark, Hiran, GA, and Bobby Clark, St. Marys, GA; 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Sunday June 3, from 6:00 PM 9:00 PM at Shepard Funeral Home in Folkston, GA. Funeral services will be held Monday June 4 at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Callahan with Rev. Reggie Herrin, Dr. Lynn Hyatt, and Rev. Gene Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in Jones cemetery in Callahan. Pallbearers will be Robert Phillips, Mike Phillips, Craig Phillips, Danny Phillips, Lewis Schider, and Bobby Thagard. Honorary Pallbearers will be her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of Shepherd Funeral Home, Folkston, GA.
ROWDEN - Bessie Blair Rowden, 92, died Friday, June 1, 2001. She was wife of the late Myles Rowden. Survived by daughter, Colleen and Sons, Ken W. and Douglas M. Rowden, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10am in George H. Hewell and Son Northside Funeral Home with Rev. Nick Phoenix officiating. SMITHIE - Cheryl Glenda Smithie, 37, passed away May 30, 2001 in an Orlando hospital as the result of injuries received in a fire at her residence on May 19 here in Jacksonville. She was a native of Jacksonville and was employed with Convergys. Survivors include: her daughter, Glenna Georgette Smithie; her mother, Glenda Davis; her father, George Smithie; her sister, Shelly Smithie; and her brother, Christian Davis. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 7:00PM at the chapel of COREY KERLIN FUNERAL HOME, 1426 Rowe Ave., with Rev. George Schade officiating.
STEPP - Frankie McCaffrey Roberts Stepp, born in Escambia Co., FL on February 5th, 1926 passed away early Friday after a valiant four-year battle with cancer. Her warmth and kindness will be greatly missed by her many family members and treasured friends. She was active in South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Many years ago, Frankie was employed by the Visiting Nurses Association of Jacksonville, and always valued the lifelong friendships that were made through that affiliation. Mrs. Stepp is survived by her devoted daughter, Lori A. Roberts. She also leaves behind her mother, Pearlie Stinson, 93, of Greenville, AL and four special aunts; Irene Folsom, Glennie Palmer, Mary Blackmon, Margaret Boswell all of Pensacola and Alabama. She is survived by five sisters; Betty Watts (John) of Charlotte Neomia Collins and Jerrie Davis (Gene) both of Greenville, AL, Maxine Green (Russell) of Pensacola, and Emma Fell (Gene) of Lillian, AL and all of her nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much. She will be greatly missed by her devoted niece, Pam Henry (Jack) and nephew, John C. Elliott, and his children, all of Jacksonville. Frankie was most appreciative of the love and support of her family and all her many friends and caretakers, especially during her courageous fight. STOMFAY-STITZ Emery (Imre K.) passed away on Friday, June 1st after a lengthy illness. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 7 p.m. in St. Paul's Church, Park St., Riverside Avondale, with Fr. James Corry officiating. Cremation took place, following his wishes. The family will visit with friends at the church for one hour before services. He leaves his wife, Dr. Aline Stomfay Stitz and three sons, Peter, John and Robert (Tammy), all of Jacksonville and a brother, John Stomfay Stitz (Alexa) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He was born in Hungary and studied for a doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Innsbruck. He worked for Radio Free Europe in Munich, before immigrating to the U.S. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with postgraduate work in real estate and construction at Ohio State University. He held several positions, including Vice President for Real Estate and Construction at Central National Back, Rockford, IL and later was the owner of Dodge Steel Fabrication and Rockford Preventive Maintenance. After moving to Florida, he was Manager, Plant Operations at Florida Southern College, Lakeland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Paul's School, 2600 Forbes St., Jacksonville, FL 32205 or the University of North Florida Child Development Research Center, 4567 St. Johns Bluff Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32224. TILLER - Clark Eberhart Tiller, 72, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2001. He was a Jacksonville native and had retired from The City of Jacksonville and St. Vincent's Hospital. He also worked for many years with Brinks. He and Mrs. Tiller have been members of Southside Assembly of God Church for 30 years. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Ann W. Tiller; daughter, Cindy Hewiett (Keith); son, Raymond C. Tiller (Suzanne); grandchildren, Joshua and Melissa Hewiett and Rachel and Gregory Tiller; and sister, Mary Hagen. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 4, 11 am, at Southside Assembly of God Church with entombment following at Greenlawn cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Sunday from 46 pm at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave.
TOPP - Evadel B. Topp, 83, a longtime resident of Jacksonville Beach passed away Friday June 1, 2001. She was retired from the City of Jacksonville and was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and Jacksonville Beach Garden Club. Survivors include her daughter Darline T. Everett of Jacksonville, son and daughter in law Stephen G. and Linda Topp of Atlanta, Ga, two grandsons Spencer and Matthew Topp both of Atlanta, Ga. Graveside services will be held Monday June 4, 2001 at 10:00 AM in H. Warren Smith cemetery. VALENTINE - Kenneth D. Valentine a resident of Springfield died May 29, 2001. He was a retiree of the United States Navy and a fulltime Music Education major at the University of North Florida. WADE - Aaron Lee Wade passed away unexpect edly by drowning on May 26, 2001. Born to Linda Wade and Edward Aaron Nimnicht II on December 8, 1976 in Jacksonville. Aaron is survived by his parents as well as two older brother, Lonni Fox and Kevan Wade; sisters-in-law, Melanie McCormick and Nicole Byron; nephew, Stormy Fox; stepbrother, Daryl Brown; step sister, Debbie Woods of Jacksonville; Grandparents, Thomas Rushing and Ruth Gibson of Pensacola, FL; uncle, Richard Rushing; aunts Kathy Eccleston, Lynda Rushing of St. Petersburg, FL; Aaron was a true blessing and an instant friend to anyone that came in contact with him. WHATLEY - Coach James W. Whatley, 88, a longtime resident of Athens, GA, died May 31, 2001. A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Coach Whatley was the son of the late Versho Wayne and Pearl Elizabeth Colvard Whatley. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant. Coach Whatley was a graduate of the University of Alabama. He played professional football for 3 years on the Brooklyn Dodgers team as a tackle. Coach Whatley was the retired head baseball coach and also served as an assistant basketball and football coach at The University of Georgia. He was a member of the Athens First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eliza Mae Masterson Whatley; a sister Mamie Coley Whatley; and a brother, Versho Wayne Whatley Jr. Graveside Funeral services will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Sunday, June 3, 2001 at 3:30 P.M. with the Rev. Dr. Bill Britt and the Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be the Athletic Department and all former personnel that coached with him at The University of Georgia.
