BEARD - Mildred L. (Mel) Beard 79 died on Memorial Day, May 28th in her home after a lingering illness. She was retired from the Jacksonville Port Authority in 1987. She was employed by the Diana Stores and May Cohens in a supervisory capacity. She served in the United States Army as S/Sgt and in the United States Air Force as T/Sgt. She was given the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Clasp, American Theater Ribbon, and the WAAC Medal. She taught music following the study of music at the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of the American Legion Post # 137. She is survived by 2 children, George and Janet, six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A memorial service is to be held at Norms 2953 Roosevelt Blvd. on Sunday, June 10, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
DAHLIN - David D. Dahlin, 27, of Jacksonville died June 8th from injuries received in an automobile accident. A native of Oakland, CA he had resided here for the past 8 years coming from Orlando. He was a carpenter by trade, and is survived by his mother; Lois Dahlin of St. Augustine, his father, Daniel Dahlin of Memphis, TN and his paternal grandparents, Dean and Tracy Dahlin of Dallas, TX. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Sunday at HARDAGE GIDDENS Mandarin Chapel 11801 San Jose Blvd. where funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday.
DURAN - Albert Richard Duran died June 4, 2001. He was born August 7, 1909 in Clifton, Arizona to Narcisco and Refugio Duran. He grew up in Los Angeles, Ca. until he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served throughout WWII in the U.S. and in post WWII Japan. He and his late wife, Ruby, were married
in 1945 at First United Methodist Church, Jacksonville where they served more than 50 years. He was a chef at three historic hotels here. He later taught Party Foods and Cake Decorating at Florida Community College. He and his wife did much entertaining at home. They traveled the world extensively. He is survived by three brothers: Philip, Benjamin, and Ricardo and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother Manuel and a sister. The funeral will be conducted at First United Methodist Church by Dr. Gene Zimmerman with a eulogy by retired Bishop Robert M. Blackburn on Monday, June 11, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park. Friends may call the funeral home Sunday from 67 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 225 E. GULACAR - Nuran Gulacar, 58, of Jacksonville, FL died of Cancer Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at her home. She was born October 17, 1942 in Karsiyaka, Izmir, Turkey. She spent her early years as a homemaker, and later as a restaurant and clothing store owner. Survivors include children Diane Provasi Lewis (Donald), John Provasi, and Jeylan Bulut; mother Hanife Koyumcu; brother Mehmet Gulacar (Perihan) and their children Oktay and Ozlem; grandson Joshua Lewis; all of Jacksonville, and former husband Donald Provasi of Orange Park, FL. Graveside services were held at 2 PM May 9 by the Islamic Center at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. Contributions may be made to Community Hospice of N.E. Florida.
HINGSON - Donald M. Hingson, 62, died on June 7, 2001. Born in Live Oak, FL and resided in Middleburg for most of his life. Mr. Hingson retired from Clay Electric and was a member of First Assembly Church of God in Middleburg. He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Hingson; mother, Louise Sapp; 2 sons: Donnie, Jr. and Michael Hingson; daughter, Renee Henley; 2 sisters: Elaine Billman and Joan Hurley; six grandchildren. Family will receive friends Sunday, 46 PM at Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Rd, Middleburg, FL. Funeral services will be held, Monday 2 PM at Black Pond Baptist Church, Middleburg with interment in Holly Hill Memorial Park.
LAING - John Stewart Laing Big John, 81 passed away in his loving wife's arms Tuesday at the VA Hospital in Gainesville, FL. He was a loving husband and Father strongly devoted to family and country. He served in The Army during World War II from 9 May 41 to 19 May 45. He fought in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for 3 yrs. 20 mos. & 22 days. He was awarded 4 Battle Stars with 1 Bronze Battle Star. After the War his main occupation were well Driller and Police Chief. He served as Deputy and Police Chief in Flagler Beach, FL from 6569. He served as Police Chief in Frostproff, FL 7273 where his Department and Ben Hill Griffing III sponsored The Boat Races at The Big Citrus Regata. He served as Police Chief at Ponce Inlet, Fl. 7378 where he allowed the Bikers to first start their races on the Beach. He was a Member of the Elks Club for 42 years. John is survived by his wife Margaret, Sons: John, Gary, Eric and Jimmy, Daughters: JoAnn, Carol Lee and Melanie. 7 Grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many others that thank God for John being a part of their life. Funeral Services were held at Green Pine Funeral Home, at 10:00 AM Friday, June 8, 2001, Yulee, FL.
LEIK - Donna Lou Leik, 76, of Atlantic Beach, died June 7, 2001. She was born May 2, 1925 in Uehling, NE. Mrs. Leik is survived by her husband of 54 years Francis; daughter, Leslie; son, Patrick and 6 grandchildren. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Community Hospice.
MARTIN - Chad S. Martin 21, of Switzerland, Florida died June 7th from injuries sustained in a boating accident. A native and lifelong resident of Jacksonville, he was a graduate of Nease High School, was a member of Jacksonville First Baptist Church, and was a sign painter for Fastsigns. Survivors include his father and stepmother: Randy and Melanie Martin of Jacksonville, his mother: Joanie Porter of Atlanta, 1 brother: Brandon Vause of Jacksonville, 1 sister: Danna Marie Crapo of Jacksonville Beach. Maternal grandparents: Betty and Frank Porter of Jacksonville, paternal grandmother: Zelma Martin of Jacksonville, step grandparents: Wade and Edna Bell of Palatka, along with many uncles, aunts, and cousins. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Saturday (today) at HARDAGE GIDDENS Mandarin Chapel 11801 San Jose Blvd. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Ruth Lindsay Auditorium of First Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Barton officiating, committal services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the mausoleum chapel at Greenlawn cemetery with Rev. Bill Williams officiating. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Flack, Josh Thomas, Zachary Anderson, Chad Nightingale, Dave Lewis, and Sean Layton. MCCOY - Funeral service for Mayrene (Bet) Maddox McCoy will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 10:00 AM in the Rosa Glover Holmes Memorial Chapel at 10:00 AM. She was employed by Dallas, Texas School Board and retired after 25 years of dedicated service. MCMILLAN - James Mock McMillan, Jr. 61, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 in Ft. Myers, Florida. A native of Atlanta, GA Mr. McMillan has lived in Jacksonville, FL since 1972 moving here from Atlanta, GA. Mr. McMillan was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, attended Georgia Tech, graduated from University of GA and received his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1965. Mr. McMillan was retired from Northwest Airlines after 31 years of service and was the Captain on the 747. Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, Sandy of Jacksonville, FL, one son, James M. McMillan, III of Birmingham, AL, two brothers, Bob (Annette) McMillan and Tom (Aubie) McMillan, one sister, Janice Parrish, all of Atlanta, GA numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, June 10, 2001 at ARLINGTON PARK FUNERAL HOME, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, FL 32211, (904) 7246384.
