Alicia Monique Gladden
Alicia Monique Gladden, 27, of Orange Park, FL passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013.
Alicia, fondly known to many as “Ice”, was born May 28, 1985 in Bethesda, MD to David and Frances Gladden.
Alicia was a 2003 graduate of Orange Park High School. As an honor student graduating with a 3.97 GPA and standout high school basketball player, she received a full athletic scholarship to Florida State University. At Orange Park High School, she collected numerous academic and athletic honors, including Who’s Who among American High School Students, National Honor Roll, invitee to the 2002 Congressional Student Leadership Conference as well as all-state, all-city and was ranked the No. 31 best recruit in the nation by All-Star Girls Report. She spent her summers playing AAU basketball on “Sisters Wit Game” which was one of the best traveling teams in the country. Gladden was named Orange Park’s women’s basketball MVP her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Gladden developed a name for herself on and off the court. She was one of the top scorers and best defensive players in Florida State women’s basketball history. Ice was a four-year starter at guard from 2003 to 2007 and is the only Seminole to capture ACC All-Defensive Team honors three times. Her name dots the FSU record book in nearly every category and sits atop the steals list. Gladden holds the FSU record for steals in a career (275) and in a single season (101 in 2004-05). In addition, she was a three-time All-ACC selection, picking up honorable mention honors during her sophomore season in 2004-05 and Third Team honors her final two years in 2005-06 and 2006-07. She led Florida State in scoring her junior and senior years, culminating by averaging 13.5 points and leading the ‘Noles’ to their first-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance in 2007. A left-handed guard, she ranks 10th in FSU history in scoring (1, 403 points) and also ranks in FSU’s top 20 in rebounds, assists and blocks. Despite standing just 5-11, Gladden was a tenacious rebounder, grabbing 18 boards in one game in 2004 and leading FSU on the glass with a 6.4 average in 2005-06. She was part of the first FSU team to go to three-straight NCAA Tournaments and finished her career with averages of 11.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.0 assists while playing in 126 games with 113 starts. Gladden was a standout in the classroom, too, capturing the ACC Academic Honor Roll award four straight years and making the Academic All-ACC Team in 2006 and 2007.
After graduating from FSU in 2007 with a degree in Sports Management, Gladden went onto enjoy a successful professional basketball career playing for five years in Europe with Energa Torun (Poland), Basket Esch (Luxembourg), ICIM Arad (Romania) and Partizan (Serbia). In 2008, she won the team’s first ever Romanian League Championship. She was named the Polish League’s Forward of the Year in 2010 and played in the Polish All-Star Game in 2011. She won the Serbian League Championship in 2012.
In 2012, she returned home to start her basketball coaching career and have the opportunity to instill her love for the game to young girls. She spent the 2012-2013 season as the assistant coach at Creekside High School in St. Johns, FL. Even in the beginning of her career, she had developed a passion for coaching the game she loved. Her dedication was a way for her to continue to use basketball as a means to help others.
While basketball was the stage that “Ice” reached the world, her calm, quiet and humble nature is how many will remember her. She had a strong belief in God and believed in the power of prayer. Her desire was that those who came in contact with her could share her joy for basketball as well as life. Always quick to flash her infectious smile, Gladden had a kindness and heart that will be forever missed.
