Burma Jean Stafford
A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Burma Jean Stafford, 88, will be held at 11 am on Monday November 14, 2011 in Greenlawn cemetery, with Chaplain Sue Barron officiating. Mrs. Stafford passed away on November 9, 2011 at her home in Jacksonville.
A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, she was born on September 17, 1923 to Rev. Charlie Wright and Mattie Cruse Wright. Burma worked for the Corps of Engineers in accounting for 32 years. She attended various Baptist Churches throughout Jacksonville during her life. She loved playing cards (especially Bridge), bowling, doing crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.
Burma was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon Stafford and by a sister, Iris. She is survived by her loving daughters Faye Joyner, Patsy Ricketson, Lynn Bridges (husband, Eddie) & Michelle Stafford; sister, Sue Barron; brother, John Wright; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and longtime friend, Eunice Lambert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.

Ovid V. 'Blackie' Blackburn
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 85
Born in Meta, Ky., on Aug. 14, 1918, he served in the Navy during World War II. then began a career at the Navy Ships Store in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he served for 32 years, retiring as director of planning. When he retired in 1976, the Department of the Navy gave him its Superior Civilian Service Award, the department’s highest service award for a civilian.
He retired to West Virginia, and moved to Atlantic Beach from Marco Island, Fla., where he lived for 14 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Merrick, Long Island, N.Y., and was a trustee, financial secretary, treasurer and usher. He was an officer in the Power Squadron in Marco Island, regularly teaching classes in boating safety. He was also a Mason and Shriner. He was a member of Neptune Baptist Church, where he was active until his health began to fail. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Dalpe, brother, Billy Blackburn, and sisters Toney Adkins and Lois Szekely.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alene; daughter Jean McMillan of Massapequa Park, NY.; brother Russell of Huntington, W.Va.; grandchildren Jeffrey Berry of Charleston, W.Va., Deborah Rowe of Lavelette, W.Va., Alene Herringer of Amityville, N.Y., and Jamison McMillan of Massapequa Park, and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Nov. 29, 2003 at Neptune Baptist Church, with the Rev. Thomas L. Bary Jr. officiating. Final arrangements and burial will be in Huntington, W.Va. Memorial contributions may be made to God’s Challenge Our Choice c/o Neptune Baptist Church, 407 Third St., Neptune Beach, 32266. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Philip Irving Stackpole
Born in Dover, NH on Jul. 3, 1920
Departed on Jul. 3, 2007 and resided in Orange Park, FL.
STACKPOLE - Philip Irving Stackpole, 87, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2007 in Jacksonville, FL. Philip was born in Dover, New Hampshire, graduated from University of New Hampshire and from Columbia University. He served as a Glider Tester in the US Army Air Corps. He was a champion ping pong player while working as a Director for the YMCA. He later went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield in 1953, retiring in 1978. He was recently accepted by the American Legions. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bernice (Bunny) Stackpole; four children, Nancy Handley, Arthur Bryon Stackpole, Mrs. Anne Keene, and Donna Rampey; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 5th at JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL. Family and friends will gather prior from 10:00 AM in the chapel. Interment will follow in the Fountain of Life Garden at Jacksonville Memory Gardens.

Dorothy Wynn Blanchard
Dorothy Wynn Blanchard, 90 passed away peacefully on December 3, 2011. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 11AM in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South with Reverend Chris Wynn officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenlawn cemetery. Dorothy is survived by three daughters; Mary Jane Blanchard of Branford, FL., Edith B. Baas (David) of Tallahassee, FL and Mildred F. (Curtis)Estes of New Zealand. She is also survived by two sisters; Lois Prevatt and Bessie Burrell both of Jax, she will be missed by her nine grandchildren and her ten great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her three brothers; Thomas, Raleigh and William Wynn. Friends are invited to a visitation which will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2011 between the hours of 2-4PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Laura H. Brandel
September 8, 1939 - July 19, 2012
Jacksonville, Florida - Laura Haid Brandel, 72, went to be in the everlasting arms of the Lord on July 19, 2012. She was born on September 8, 1939 in Lakewood, Ohio to her late parents, Keith and Grace Haid. She and her family moved and resided in Jacksonville, Florida since 1956. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, James B. Brandel; her daughter, Kathy Brandel Dunlap (Jackson, Sr.); her son, James T. Brandel (April); grandchildren, Jackson Wade Dunlap, Michelle Dunlap and Courteney Holliday.
Laura was a graduate of DuPont High School, class of 1957. She was an avid gardener, lover of animals; she bred Siamese cats, raised birds, fish and dogs. She also enjoyed needlepoint and knitting. She loved going out on their boat fishing or just to enjoy the outdoors. She excelled in everything that she accomplished in her life. She worked at the family business, Brandel Management until she retired. She has touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all.
Her family will be receiving friends at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, FL, on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 from 6-8:00pm. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Arlington Park cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Arlington Congregational Church, 431 University Boulevard North, Jacksonville, FL, on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:00am in the sanctuary.

Andrew Steele Horton Sr.
Died: Sunday, November 23, 2003
Age: 85
Born April 11, 1918, in Philadelphia, he moved to Atlantic Beach in 1998 from Alexandria, Va. He was a retired attorney.
He is survived by his daughter, Susanne (Jeffrey) Barker of Atlantic Beach; son Andrew Steele (Odette) Horton Jr. of Norman, Okla.; sister Louisa Hill of New York, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville, 7405 Arlington Expressway, with the Rev. Dr. John L. Young officiating. Quinn-Shalz, A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Barbara H. Bierman
Died: Sunday, November 23, 2003
Age: 65
Born in Jacksonville, she lived in Atlanta for many years, moved to Atlantic Beach in 1996 and moved to Jacksonville a few years later. She was a longtime member of Congregation Ahavath Chesed.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Bill Bierman; sons Jack (Lisa) Bierman and Michael J. (Deanna) Bierman, both of Atlanta; sister Paula (Buzzy) Klausner of Ponte Vedra Beach; brother Charles (Evelyn) Moskovitz; grandsons Benjamin Bierman and Nathan Bierman, and other relatives.
A graveside service was held Nov. 25 in the King David cemetery in Greenlawn cemetery, with Rabbi Michael Matuson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville.

Anthony “Tony” Kester
Anthony “Tony” James Kester, 30, passed away on October 23, 2010 in Jacksonville, FL. Tony was born in Santa Clara, CA on July 15, 1980. He moved to Fleming Island, FL in 1994 and graduated from Clay High School in 1998. Tony married Leslie J. Basinger-Kester and together they had one son Ian Anthony Basinger, age 5. He was employed by Vystar Credit Union.
Tony’s passions in life included the ocean, music, tattoos, family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife and son; his parents Liann Beck (John) and Ron Kester (Tony Aitken); his grandparents Lidia and Bud Reiter and Carolyn and John Beck, Sr.; brother Kevin Beck and many other family and friends.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Ave, Orange Park, FL 32073 (904) 264-1233. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home with Officiating Minister Vernel Oberes and the Rev. Marty Basinger presiding. The burial will follow at Oaklawn cemetery, Jacksonville, FL.

Charlie Mae Walton
Charlie Mae Walton, 91, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Born in Macon, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Alline and Ernest C. Walton. She was predeceased by brother, Ernest Walton of Jacksonville, FL, brother, James Walton of Orange City, FL and niece, Margaret Martin of Fayetteville, NC.
Mae is survived by brother, Frank E. Walton (Betty) of Simsbury, CT, niece, Kent Walton Rogers (Tom) of Simsbury, CT, nephews, Ernest Walton, Jr (Irene) of Jacksonville, FL, Robert L. Walton (Sol) of Orlando, FL, Christopher Walton (Nikki) of Tampa, FL, and Frank E. Walton, Jr (Alison) of Jacksonville, FL along with 9 great nieces and nephews.
A resident of Jacksonville for over 80 years, Mae was active in many professional and civic organizations and in her church. Hers was truly a life devoted to serving others. Working much of her career as an independent insurance agent, she was in her 41st year of employment with Donavan Insurance Agency at the time of her death. During her years in the insurance industry, Mae was proudly recognized as the first female Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) in the state of Florida, was a charter member of the Insurance Women of Jacksonville, FL and taught insurance classes for over 30 years. She truly enjoyed her work and took great pride in the fact that she had third generation clients. Mae also served on various other boards and committees within the community.
A member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church since 1937, Mae loved her church and her church family. She served in a variety of ways throughout the years. She was Assistant Church Treasurer for over 40 years, a life-long choir member, a Scout Leader, head of the Pioneer Department, a member of the Lydia Circle, and a participant in the Senior Adult Ministry. In addition, Mae was a Deacon of the church, served as an Elder and in 2002, was elected “Living Saint” in recognition of her contributions and many hours of faithful service.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 26, 2012 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. A service celebrating Mae’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. A private interment will follow later in the day at Oaklawn cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 2137 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207 or to the Thornwell Home for Children, P. O. Box 60, 302 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.

John David Ormerod
Died: Saturday, November 22, 2003
Age: 33
Born June 19, 1970, in Ft. Riley, Kan., he was a graduate of Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., and was a computer engineer for Alcoa Aluminum.
He is survived by his parents, David and Susan Ormerod of Ponte Vedra Beach, and his paternal grandmother, Eleanor Ormerod of Warren, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held on Jan. 3 in Sewickley, Pa. Services in Jacksonville will be announced. Quinn-Shalz A Family Funeral Home, Jacksonville Beach.

Lillie Mae Stephens
altMrs. Lillie Mae Moseley, Campbell, Califf, Andrews, Stephens passed away January 6, 2012, in Orange Park, FL. Born March 16, 1916 in Appalachia, VA, she was the daughter of Robert Moseley & Arizona Lawson. She and her young teenage mother traveled many places before settling in Greenville, SC, where Lillie graduated high school, married and began her career as a top notch salesperson. She retired from Ivey’s Department Store which is now Dillard’s. Lillie was predeceased by her parents, brother, sister and four husbands. When Lillie and second husband, Frank arrived in Jacksonville in 1949 they became members of Frist Baptist Church. She seemed to be loved by all who knew her even at first contact. Her prayer each day was for God to put someone in her path that she could help. We will all miss her. In lieu of flowers donations can be made by helping someone of your choice. Funeral services will be graveside at Greenlawn cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207, Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 3:30PM. Arrangements by George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home.

Thurston Taylor
Thurston H. Taylor, 89, went to be with his Lord on January 27, 2009. T-Bone as he was affectionately by his family and friends was a proud member of the “Greatest Generation” and shall be greatly missed by all who knew him. Thurston was born on September 22, 1919 and was raised in Douglas, Georgia before moving his family to Jacksonville, Florida in 1955 and lived in the Holly Oaks Community from 1957 until he was recently hospitalized as he struggled with an invasive cancer. T-Bone was a graduate of Douglas High School and attended South Georgia Junior College and Auburn University on a football scholarship. He was passionate about football and his beloved Auburn Tigers and War Eagles. During WWII, Thurston was an Airman with The Army Air Corp., until he was honorably discharged in 1946. While in Jacksonville, T-Bone eventually became a seaman and joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and sailed the world aboard oil tankers until his retirement. Thurston is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Margaret T. Taylor and two children Haldane Taylor (Dee) of Jacksonville, Florida and Peggy T. Wirth (Randy) of East Lansing, Michigan . He also leaves two grandchildren, Holly Cauley of Tallahassee, Florida and Kelly Rousseau of Jacksonville, Florida and seven great grandchildren, who adored their “Great Grandpa”. Thurston and Margaret were faithful members of Parkwood Baptist Church for over 30 years. They were devoted workers for their church and enjoyed their senior choir. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm till 3:00 pm on January 30, 2009 at Arlington Park Funeral Home, 6920 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, Florida . Funeral services will proceed at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow at Arlington Park cemetery .

Allison Collie Hartman
Died: Wednesday, March 10, 2004
Age: 18
Born Nov. 29, 1985 in Greenwich, Conn., she moved with her family from Miami to Ponte Vedra in 1989. She attended Ponte Vedra public schools throughout her school years.
An honor student who had been offered a merit scholarship at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Allison was looking forward to starting her college career in the fall.
At Nease, she was in the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Model United Nations and Senior Women. She won academic letters in 2003 and 2004. She always expressed herself through art and won awards for her artwork as early as age 7. She had been in a performing dance troupe for several years, sang with the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus at Carnegie Hall and was proficient in writing, having been a contributing writer at The Beaches Leader and Ponte Vedra Leader.
Allison was employed as a server at Vicar’s Landing and a cashier at Players Café, both in Ponte Vedra, She had a magnetic personality and was known for her creativity, loyalty to friends and beautiful auburn hair.
She is survived by her mother, Kathy Hartman of Ponte Vedra; father Robert L. Hartman of Ponte Vedra; sister Mandi Hartman; twin brother Stephen Hartman and older brother Michael C. Hartman and his wife Kathy; grandparents Lou and Genny Yane; aunts and uncles Ruth and Ray Schneider, James and Kathy Yane and Laura and Dale Frechette, all of Ohio, Jack and Carole Yane of South Carolina, Margo and Dave Meharg of St. Augustine and John and Margaret Hartman of Jacksonville, and numerous cousins.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 12 at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13 at Christ the Redeemer Church, 190 South Roscoe Road, Ponte Vedra Beach with Reverend Bruce Galloway officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Vicar’s Landing Scholarship Fund, 1000 Vicars Landing Way, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.

Died: Wednesday, March 10, 2004
Age: 76
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three children, Dottie (David) Breland, Dana Duran and Chuck (Eva) Duran and three grandchildren.
visitation will be held Friday March 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the chapel of Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, in the chapel of Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home with Rev. Steve McCollum officiating. Interment will be in Beaches Memorial Park.
