Elizabeth Anne Camp “Betty” Teague
Elizabeth Anne Camp “Betty” Teague died Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the age of 83, due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Dorcas D. and Lewis F. Camp on February 21, 1926, the eldest of four children. She joins her sister, Mary Camp Deem, who has gone on before her, as well as her dear childhood friend and cousin, Sarah Sloan Barnes, and her childhood sweetheart, William Berryhill.
Betty leaves her siblings, Lewis Foreman Camp Jr., his wife Dorothy and their children, Lewis F. Camp III (Crystal), Lorraine Idell Camp (Michael Ferguson), Mary Ruth Camp Hoffman (Jeff), Linda Jean Camp (Shaun McDermott), and grandnieces Julia and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hoffman and Adonica “Addie” and Amelia “Mia” Camp-McDermott; and Patricia Camp McGarr, her husband Gene, and her children, Michael Wesley Hickman, Charles Lewis “Chuck” Hickman (Katherine) and John Mark Hickman (Ginger) and grandniece Jessica Hickman. Betty has one daughter, Elizabeth Calvert Teague, who will miss her terribly, and continues to strive to become even half the woman her mother was.
Betty began her career as a librarian in Charlotte, North Carolina, driving the Bookmobile, and after moving to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, she went to work at the library there. When that library merged with the City of Jacksonville Public Library she did, too, and later became the branch librarian at Westbrook Branch, and reference librarian at Regency Square Library, where she served until her retirement.
Betty was a “Founding Mother” of the Women’s Movement in Northeast Florida. She was instrumental (along with a small network of equally dedicated, selfless women) in establishing the first Rape Crisis hotline in Jacksonville; founding Hubbard House (a home for battered women); and co-chairing the first “Stop Child Abuse” symposium in Jacksonville (perhaps in the whole state). As the only non-clergy member of Jacksonville Clergy Consultation Service, Betty worked to establish the first non-profit women’s health care clinic in Jacksonville, The Max Suter Women’s Center for Reproductive Health.
During Betty’s involvement with Hubbard House (detailed in part in the book “A House on Hubbard Street” by Louise Stanton Warren), she became a friend of and apprentice to paralegal Rosemary Furman, and thus began the next phase of her life, helping battered women, the poor and the indigent to represent themselves in Florida’s courts. She continued in that field until the turn of the century.
Always a music lover, Betty became an ardent fan of Jimmy Buffett in the early 1990s, and became a charter member of Beaches A1A Parrothead Club. Her adventures with the parrotheads took her to Buffett concerts all over the United States, from the Conch Republic of Key West to Waikiki, Hawaii, and many places in between. She met many of the musicians whose music she loved, including the Head Parrothead himself, Jimmy Buffett, and through those friendships she came to know, love and be loved by many of those same musicians. Betty became known to parrotheads all over the world as the “Queen Mum” of the parrothead nation, and their love and support has been a constant source of strength to Betty as she journeys from this world.
There is a host of family and friends who remain behind to work, as Betty did, to make this world a little better place than she found it, and at the same time, to “Party with a Purpose.” She touched so many lives, and so many touched hers, that it would be impossible to list everyone here, but she would want these folks to know how much she loved them (in no particular order): Bernadette Gambino and her family, Bruce and Tammy Havens and their family, Gary and Melissa DiStefano, Cory and Nellie Carlen Jones, Ilga Berzins, Susan and John Richardson, Bob Douillard, Bill “Sauce Boss” and Ruthie Wharton, TC Mitchell, Tina Gullikson, Charlie and Lori Yelton, Mary Kay, Dave and Jake Ranney, Alan and Terri Conklin, Karen Will-Dunne (her “Jager shots” buddy), Billy and Buddy Peoples, Gin and Steve Schaffer, Mark Cole, Alex and Janet Leist, Bill and Ann Page, Tim Glancy and Donna Carpenter, Edwina Davis, Mary Beth Koechlin, Joyce Edwards, Gail Jones, Eve Winchell, Vicki Wengrow, Ellen Spangler, Carolyn Henry, Sybil Eppler, Sybil Stanton, Myrtle Jones, Flo Clark, Virginia Wansley, Clara Dunaway, Michael and Donna Carlson, Carol Neil and everyone at HOPE Adult Day Services, Lisa Harrison, Mandy Emler, Lavonne Emler, Eric, Julie and Lorelei Belanger and Lorelei’s sister Destiny, with whom Betty had an amazingly deep and special bond. Any exclusions from this list are purely accidental; to list everyone Betty loved and who loved her would be a monumental undertaking.
There will be a party to celebrate Betty’s life at a later date; neither a funeral nor a memorial service would adequately represent her desire to enjoy life and for others to do likewise.
Should you choose to, please consider a donation to one of the following deserving charities in Betty’s name: Planet Gumbo, 678 McDonnell Drive, Tallahassee, Fla. 32310, http://planetgumbo.org; Friends of Adult Day Services Corp., 1560 Roberts Drive, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. 32250; or Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Fla. 32257.
Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 1701 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, Fla. 32250, 904-249-2374.
