Leon Stalin Broadnax, 68, passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Mr. Broadnax was a native of Jacksonville and had retired in 2004 after 30 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Henry Broadnax, III and sister, June R. Delph. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mercedes S. Broadnax; 3 daughters: Conchita Griffin (Ernest), Rhonda Broadnax (Larry) and Selena Holland (Bobby); sister-in-law, Rosa Broadnax; brother-in-law, Michael Delph; 4 grandchildren: Ryan, Jasmine, Jamar and Taylor; 1 great grandson, Jamie; nieces and nephews, Jenean (Chris), Jackie, and Michael; and other loving family and a host of dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, September 19, at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, 215 Bethel Baptist Street, with Rev. Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday, September 18 at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave.
Jimmie "James" Mattern Butts
Jimmie “James” Mattern Butts, 80 of Jacksonville went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 11, 2012. He is predeceased by his wife Alice M. Butts. He is survived by his three daughters and one son. Wendy L. Harris (Randy) of Jax Beach, Sheri L. Keene (Steve) of Jax, Kimberly R. Young (Charlene) of Jax, and Charles M. Butts (Monique) of Jax. A sister Elaine Key of Corinth, MS. Three brothers; Wayne Butts of Chattanooga, TN, Donnie Butts of Jax, and John Lockhart of Valrico, FL., He is also survived by five grandchildren; Josh and Jesse Harris, Christina Keene, Jessica and Racheal Butts, eleven Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. James was a graduate of the Robert E. Lee High School and from Stetson University in Deland, FL. He was retired from the Duval County School Board as a teacher and from Johnson and Johnson, Vistakon. He was ordained by the Southern Baptist Convention. James was a long time member of the Southside Assembly of God Church. He was also active with the civil air patrol. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10AM in the chapel of George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard South, with Pastor Wayne Lanier officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn cemetery.

Rachel Laura Gill, 62, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Mrs. Gill was a native and lifelong resident of Jacksonville. She had retired as a registered nurse and was an active member of Vision Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Roy B. Gill; two daughters, Rebecca Brittain (Joseph) and Renee Gill; two sons, Ronald Gill and Richard Gill (Dana); two sisters, Frieda Gill and Lora Lee Wertz; five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other loving family and dear friends. Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, September 15, at Vision Baptist Church, 16485 North Main Street, with Rev. F. Ray Turner officiating. James I. “Buddy” Williams in 1950. Colene has been one of Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1952. She is preceded in death by her husband and is survived by 4 children: Donna Sweat (Tommy), Jimmy Williams (Pat), Vicki Schmechel, and David Williams (Rhonda). She has 7 grandchildren: Christy (Mike), Tonya (Jason), Stephanie (deceased), Madison, McKynzi, Lynn and Dalton; sister, Johnita Hoffmann and several nieces, nephews and many loving friends. U.S. Veteran - MORRIS, Jackie James “Jack” Morris, 77 of Jacksonville, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2011. Mr. Morris was a native of Baxley, Georgia and had lived in Jacksonville for many years. He owned and operated “J & J Propane” until his retirement. It was there where many people will remember him for the “Peanuts” he sold. Mr. Morris was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Ellie Holland Morris; his only baby girl, Charlene; his first wife and the mother of his children, Edna Morris Christian; his second wife, Imogene Morris; and his brother, Curtis. Survivors include his 3 sisters: Ann Crouch, Polly DeSmidt and Sue Paul (Roger); his brother, Cecil; 3 sons: James R., Jerry W. and Joseph A. (Becky); 3 grandchildren: Derek (Christie), Stephanie, and Jerry Jr.; along with great grandson, Michael and several nieces & nephews. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, September 15 at Riverside Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Kincade officiating. Preston Wilbur Wise, Sr.
Preston Wilber Wise, Sr., age 71, passed away on Sunday January 8, 2012 in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday January 12, 2012 from 5:30 until 7:30 pm in George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Blvd., S. A funeral service will be held on Friday January 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm in Southpoint Baptist Church, 3335 Tiger Hole Rd., with Dr. Terry N. Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn cemetery.
Preston was born in Arcola, Georgia January 16, 1940 to Levi Wise and Myrtle NeSmith Wise. The family moved to Savannah, GA, where Preston grew up, until moving to Jacksonville a little over 40 years ago. He was a graduate of Savannah High School where he was a member of the R.O.T.C. Preston was a Master Carpenter and worked for many years doing subcontractor work. He loved to use his woodworking skills and also enjoyed traveling and playing guitar and piano and he was a member of Southpoint Baptist Church for many years.
Preston Wise was preceded in death by his parents & a sister, Elva Metz. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lu Wise; children, Preston Wise, Jr., Sharon Dean, Jeneice Janson & Carol Howard; 9 grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Jesse, Joseph, Rachel, Nick, Brittany, Abigail & Aaron; 3 great grandchildren, Hunter, Brantley & Lucas; a brother, Jesse Wise; 2 sisters, Bonnie Gay & Ethel Bolton and many extended family members & friends.
John Morgan Ogilvie
John Morgan Ogilvie, 80, passed away on September 11, 2011. He was born in Gainesville, Florida to Claude St. Clair and Ethel Henry Ogilvie. He attended schools in Jacksonville, graduated The Bolles School in 1948, The Mercersburg Academy in 1949 and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1953. After graduation he received a Commission in the US Coast and Geodetic Survey.
In 1955, Morgan joined the DuPont Company with positions in Wilmington, Chicago, New York City and Shreveport, Louisiana. Returning to Jacksonville in 1965, he began a career of 28 years with Diebold. During his Jacksonville tenure, Morgan was a Paul Harris member of the Rotary Club of South Jacksonville, The University Club, The Florida Yacht Club, The Deerwood Club, The Ponte Vedra Club and served as Commodore of the San Jose Yacht Club.
He was predeceased by both parents and his brother, Charles (Jeanne) of Boone, North Carolina. Morgan is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Sara Lee, his sister, Claudette Ogilvie French (Bob) of St. Simons Island, Georgia, as well as a nephew, nieces and a host of dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, 2137 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida.

Jeannette Douma
Jeannette Douma, 96, passed away on January 22, 2012 at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek. She was born on February 28, 1915 in Midland Park, New Jersey to William Minnaard & Matilda Van Ostenbridge Minnaard.
Mrs. Douma was a resident of Jacksonville since 2004, and was a member of Christ Church PCA, 9791 Old St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry Douma in 1982 and her twin boys, William & Henry Douma in 1942; she is survived by her 3 daughters, Claire Van Til (husband, Kenneth) of St. Johns, Joyce De Jong (husband, Jack) of Indiana & Diane Langenburg of Fleming Island; 8 grandchildren;18 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held in Christ Church on Monday January 30, 2012 at 11 am.
Mr. William Bernard Gandy
February 22, 1923 - January 29, 2013
Jacksonville, Florida - William Bernard Gandy, 89, of Jacksonville, FL passed away January 29, 2013. He was born in Waycross, GA and lived most of his life in Jacksonville. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps during WWII as a Warrant Officer in the Pacific. He retired from the JEA after 43 years in 1990 and was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and an active member of the Men's Garden Club of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lillian E. Gandy. Survivors include: daughters Terri Hathcock (John)and Becky Nunnally (Michael); son William Bernard Gandy, Jr. (Gail); grandchildren, Adam Hathcock (Rebecca), Tyler Hathcock, Ryan Hathcock, Trevor Nunnally, Elizabeth Wilson (Jason), Rachel Gandy; sister, Marion Delrose, and other family members and many friends.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 10AM at Parkwood Baptist Church, 7900 Lone Star Road, Jacksonville, FL 32211. Visitation will be held from 9 AM until time of service.

Gail D. Berry

Gail B. Berry, 74, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011. Mrs. Berry was a native and lifelong resident of Jacksonville. Survivors include her husband, Richard L. "Dick" Berry; one Daughter, Valarie Berry Odum (Charles); two sons, Michael V. Berry and Patrick L. Berry (Susanne); one brother, Noble A. Dyal, Jr.; and four grandchildren, Steffanie, Stacie, Zachary and Michaela. Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 pm Friday, September 16, in the chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Avenue, with Dean Bunk officiating. Norma Hanun Azar

AZAR - Norma Hanun Azar, age 75, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2011, with her loving family by her side. She was born February 12, 1936 in Mante City, Mexico to Elias Hanun Yazgi and Raduy Quezene Khalil. Norma was married
to her viejo, Victor Azar, for 46 years. She was passionate about her faith and an active member of Christ The King Catholic Parish, The Molaka Club, The Syrian Ladies Club, and The Lebanon American Club.
Norma is survived by her two children Victor B. Azar Jr. (Dawn) and Margaret M. Azar; her grandchildren Victoria N. Isenhower, Darian, Joseph, Victor and Stephen Azar; her eight sisters Linda, Yulet, Maria, Rosa, Layla, Lupana, Teresa and Perla; as well as over 236 additional loving family members.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents Elias Hanun Yazgi and Raduy Quezene Khalil, her husband Victor B. Azar, her two brothers Fuad and Elias, and her sister Lourdes.
Norma’s laughter will be forever missed; her smile will always live in our hearts.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Christ The King Church, 742 Arlington Road on Wednesday, September 21, at 11am.

Frances Meide Bell
(June 9, 1945 - September 27, 2011)
Frances Meide Bell, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), peacefully and with her family at her side. Frances was a lifelong Beaches resident, graduating from Fletcher High School and then Florida State University. She started her career as an elementary school teacher and retired from Fletcher High School as the head media specialist.
Frances was predeceased by her parents, Nell and Hewett Daniel, and by her husband Charles Meide. She is survived by her husband Dick Bell, her children Chuck Meide and Cindy Meide VonDolteren, her step-children Richie Bell (Leslie) and Patrick Bell, her grandson Charlie VonDolteren, her sister Nancy Hartney, her brother Bill Daniel (Susan) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Frances was an avid FSU fan and was a competitive swimmer and tennis player. She also enjoyed traveling and scuba diving, having completed over 200 dives and trips to many countries in Europe and the Caribbean and also China, Australia, and New Zealand. She was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church. She had always been a pillar of strength for her family during hard times, and her grace and faith when faced with the devastation of ALS was, and continues to be, an inspiration for all of us.
A memorial service will held at Christ United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 4, at 2:00 pm, with Pastor Bill Beebe officiating. A reception will follow in Wilson Hall.

Joann F. Yanchik 61, of Jacksonville was called home to her Savior on Monday, October 17, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Dante Cristofaro and is survived by her mother Mildred Cristofaro of Palm Bay, her four children Donna Gonella, Daniel Murphy, Jennifer Crump and Christopher Yanchik and her nine beloved grandchildren, her sister Donna Dupuis and brothers Dante, Gary and Tim Cristofaro. Joann was from Somers, NY and lived in Palm Bay for over 20 years. Calling hours will be at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville 32211 from 5-7 pm on Friday, October 21, . A funeral will be held on Saturday October 22, at 11 am at East Pointe Church 270 North Kernan Blvd., Jacksonville.

Joseph Anthony Torreano, 94 of Jacksonville, FL passed away on September 29, 2011. A visitation will be held at George H. Hewell and Son Funeral Home, 4140 University Boulevard, South Jacksonville, FL on October 1, 2011 between 6-8pm. A longtime Shriner, Mr. Torreano is survived by his niece Angela (Ray) Russell of Jacksonville, FL.; a nephew Jimmy E. (Betsy) Willis of Aberdeen, MS; Judy Willis, wife of the late Samuel E. Willis, Jr., a nephew of Wren, MS. He will also be missed by his special care givers; Shirley Straker, Shirley Graham, Robyn Worrell and Dorothy Wilson. Interment will take place in Elmwood cemetery in Birmingham Alabama a later date.
Sylvia Mary Fowler
(October 21, 1921 - October 20, 2011)
Sylvia (Salwa) Mary Fowler, née Debs, passed away October 20, 2011, one day before her 90th birthday. Born in Jacksonville, FL on October 21, 1921, she was the oldest of five children of Nicolas and Rosa Debs, who immigrated from Ghazir, Lebanon in 1920.
Sylvia and her siblings, Mae, Nellie, Nick, and Gene were raised above Debs Store, a family grocery founded by her father in 1921 in the Springfield area, and graduated from Immaculate Conception School. She worked for many of the finer local dress shops in her early years, and retired from Christ the King Catholic School cafeteria after 25 years of service.
Sylvia met the love of her life, John Ivey Fowler, in 1945, when the dashing Army Air Corp bombardier was on a 30 day leave during World War II. They wed on July 29, 1948, and were married
for 43 years, until “Big Johnny’s” passing in 1992. They settled in the Glynlea area where they raised their family of four children. The Fowlers were one of the founding families of Christ the King Catholic Church and Sylvia was a member of the Christ the King Women’s Guild.
Nothing was more important to Sylvia than her children and family. It was a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She will be remembered most for her love and exceptional kindness and generosity to others. She touched the hearts of all who knew her.
She also deeply valued education, as her father was a professor in Lebanon prior to immigrating to the United States. She and her husband were determined that their children receive college educations.
Sylvia is predeceased by her parents, husband, and her brothers.
Sylvia is survived by her children John (Mary), Lynn Mullaney (Rick), Richard (Melody), and Robert (Susan); her 8 grandchildren John Shea (Jennifer), Michael (fiancée Tiffani), Stephen, Taylor, Richie, Katie, Lauren, and Matthew; her 3 great-grandchildren Juliet, Kyleigh and Caden; sisters Mae and Nellie; and sister-in-law Julia.
A visitation will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 742 Arlington Rd.N. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, October 24, 2011 at 10 am, also at Christ the King, Monsignor Mortimer Danaher and Father Thanh Nguyen, co-celebrants. Internment will follow the funeral mass at Greenlawn cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church or NE Florida Community Hospice.
