WELLMAN - Edmund B. Wellman, 83, passed away December 5, 1998. He was retired from the Navy and a member of the Edgewood Avenue Christian Church. Survivors include his wife Louise Wellman; 2 daughters, Joan Earrey and Jean Kulaszewski of Jacksonville; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday December 7, at the chapel of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 729 S. Edgewood Avenue, with interment to follow at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday (Today) from 2-4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Edgewood Avenue Christian Church.
WHITMORE - Clair William, 65, passed away suddenly at his residence on November 30, 1998 and joined our Lord Jesus. He was born on November 30, 1933 in Michigan. After graduating, he made a career in plastering and retired in Middleburg, Florida in 1992. Clair attended the Park of the Palms Chapel in Keystone Heights and he loved the Lord. He was predeceased by his son Don Whitmore. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Ursula Whitmore, son, Steve Whitmore, daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Carl Ackerman, daughter-in-law, Dawn Whitmore, brother and sister-in-law, Clark and Ada Whitmore, 4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. HAGINS, SR. - Harold G. Hagins, Sr., 74, of Yulee, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville. A native of Statesboro, Georgia, Mr. Hagins had resided in Yulee since 1954. He formerly owned and operated Hagins Gulf in Yulee. He served on the Florida Public Service commission, retiring in 1983. Mr. Hagins was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, the V.F.W., American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of Police, and a charter member of the Yulee Moose Lodge. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Statesboro, GA, the Royal Arch Masons, Fernandina Shrine Club and the Morocco Temple. He was a founding member of the Yulee Ball Park, a member of the Florida Recreation Commission, and was a founding member of the Yulee Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Hagins also served in the United States Marine Corp. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Hagins - Yulee; two sons, Hank Hagins - Fernandina Beach, and David Hagins - Yulee; two daughters: Alice Hagins Fountain - Jonesboro, GA and Karla Hagins Scott - Yulee; sister: Sue Herrington - Lafayette, GA; and 8 grandchildren. HARVIN - Mrs. Elsie Sellers Stewart Fitchett Harvin, 71, died Saturday, February 27, 1999 in a local hospital. Mrs. Harvin was a native of Jacksonville and resided in Macclenny since 1997. She was predeceased by her children's fathers: John W. Stewart, Jr., December 31, 1957, John W. Fitchett, December 12, 1989, and Henry E. Harvin, Jr., November 1, 1986. Mrs. Harvin is survived by her children: Margaret (Steve) Canfield of Mombasa, Kenya, E. Africa; Lorraine (James) Runyans of Charlotte, N.C.; Kathryn Stewart of Phoenix, AZ; Elsie Jane (William) Garton of Bonneau, S.C.; Betty Jean (Bob) Lambourne of Altofs, Yorkshire England; Sandra (Wayne) Jackson of Eastman, GA; Karen Fitchett of Gainesville, FL; Laura (Wayne) Helton of Macclenny, FL; John (Karen) Stewart III of Jacksonville; Charles (Patty) Fitchett of Paso Robles, CA; Andrew (Jennifer) Fitchett of Lakeland, FL; Elliot Fitchett of Macclenny, FL; Mark Fitchett of Chesapeake, VA. Two sisters: Johanna Sage and Margaret Potter; one brother, Harold Albertson. 39 Grandchildren; and 35 Great Grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. McGUIRE - Virginia P. McGuire, 70, passed away Feb. 27, 1999. She was born in Tazwell Co., VA, had resided in Jacksonville, FL for many years, and lived in Interlachen, FL for the past 2 years. She was a 33 year member of Gospel Lighthouse Church. Mrs. McGuire was preceded in death by 2 sons, Kenny and Gebo McGuire and is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, James K. McGuire, Sr.; 2 sons, 'JR' McGuire, and Timmy McGuire; 3 daughters, Barbara Tallant, Patricia Magruder, and Lori Hedeen; sister, Verdi Blankenship; 17 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tue., Mar. 2, 1999 in the Chapel of TOWN & COUNTRY FUNERAL HOME, 7242 Normandy Blvd., with Rev. Michael Magruder and Rev. Dean Treadwell officiating. SPRAGUE - Carolyn E. Sprague, 67, of Melbourne, Florida died Tuesday, February 23, 1999. She was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She was a Delta Airline Reservation Agent for 36 years in Atlanta, Jacksonville and Miami, Florida. She moved from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida four years ago. Friends are requesting no flowers, donations to the Humane Society.
SURRENCY-QUILLEN - Elsie Surrency-Quillen, 85, of Green Cove Springs, died Saturday, February 27, 1999 at Orange Park Medical Center. Elsie was born in Jacksonville, Florida and was a lifetime resident of the local area. She was a member of Congregational Holiness Church and cared for her family as a homemaker. Elsie enjoyed the art of creating ceramics, but most of all loved cooking and gathering with family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Woodrow, who passed away in 1976 and her son, Johnny Surrency, who passed away in 1983. She is survived by her beloved family members, son, Rev. Ronnie Surrency, Green Cove Springs; daughters, Betty Surrency, Ocala; Judy Patterson, Yulee; sisters, Erma Pollard, Ocala; Helen Perkins, Starke; 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and her many friends. Elsie left this world with all her love, grave and strength. She was truly a beautiful person and we are all lucky to have known and to have loved her. A special mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, March 1st., 6-9 P.M. WERLING - D. Grace Kennedy Werling - On June 28, 1920, Frank and Elisa Kennedy gave birth to Grace in Raccoon Twsp., PA, just outside Pittsburgh. She resided there with her 3 brothers and 3 sisters, and attended school. She married
and moved to Alliquippa, PA and gave birth to her daughter Rosilee L. (Janie) Laws. She later moved to Starke and then to Jacksonville where she gave birth to her son William G. Estep, a Lieutenant with Jacksonville Fire/Rescue. Through all the hardships of her life, Grave found a way to express her own special humor and facial expressions. Her parents gave her the gift of music-she always had a song in her mind. She loved dancing and was doing so physically and in her heart even while she was hospitalized. As a single mother, Grace taught her children to love our creator and his many gifts, and to respect all people. She is survived by her son and her daughter's children Joanna Laws, Judy Abernathy, and Joe Laws, Jr. and her only remaining sister, Naomi Goppert who resides in Alliquippa, PA. A graveside memorial service will be held at Riverside Memorial Park cemetery on Normandy Blvd. and arrangements are being handled by HARDAGE-GIDDENS TOWN & COUNTRY FUNERAL HOME.
WILSON - Eula Mae Wilson, 66, died Friday, February 26, 1999. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Charles M. Wilson, Sr. and is survived by her children: Dollie Baum, Annette Sehulster and Chuck (Joan) Wilson, Jr.; 2 sisters: Kathleen Nelson and Gloria Castle; a brother: Arnold Harper; 3 grandchildren: Warren Davis, Jr., Kimberly Tingle and Alexandria Sehulster. WRIGHT - Camilee Stokes Wright, 88, died Saturday night at a local hospital after an extended illness. She was born and reared in Hawkinsville, Georgia, and pursued a business career through Western Union, followed by many years at Merlin's in Atlanta ending with her retirement as Accounting Manager. She moved to Jacksonville Beach in 1982. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy A. Wright in 1956. Survivors include her daughter, Anne and son-in-law William A. Boggs of Jacksonville Beach; sister Wanda Buffington of Atlanta; grandsons David H. Willis of Jacksonville Beach, James R. Willis with wife Deborah of Switzerland, Florida; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. CHANCEY - Betty Gulledge Chancey went home to be with the Lord August 12, 2000. She was born August 20, 1924, to Preston B. and Grace Boomershine Gulledge in Charlotte, NC. She moved to Jacksonville with her family when she was nine years old. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, who devoted her life to the role of a loving, diligent homemaker. As the wife of a career Army officer, she and the family moved frequently within the U.S. and to other countries. No matter what the local customs and circumstances may have been outside the home, the environment inside her home always reflected the steadfastness and good order of a God Fearing, caring mother and wife. Betty gave many hours of her time helping others. She was active in helping incoming families get settled at new duty locations through the Army Community Services program. She was also a volunteer in the Red Cross ' Gray Ladies' in Army hospitals and dispensaries. Since returning to Jacksonville she had been a member of First Baptist Church where she was an active worker and leader in the ' Love' ladies Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her son, Clarence Wade (Trip) Chancey III. Survivors include her husband of fifty-three years, C. Wade Chancey, Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and David Lundy, Susan and Charles Talbert, of Jacksonville, and Barbara and Jeffrey Mortberg of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Adam Lundy, Jared Lundy, Rachel Lundy, Zachary Talbert, Hope Mortberg and Bethany Mortberg; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and James Kesterson of Winter Haven. A resident of St. Petersburg, Will was a graduate of University of North FL with a degree in information technology. He is survived by his parents, Earl and Kirtley Higginbotham; brother, Jesse; grandfather, Dr. William White; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. HILL - Mrs. Dorothy Hill a resident of 2173 West 13th Street died 8/8/00. She was a member of Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Pernall Raggins, Pastor. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Julia M. Hill. Survivors include: brother, Cornelius Wright of Birmingham, AL; two sons, Lummie Wright of Montgomery, AL and Turner Hill Jr of Jax., FL; four daughters, Inez Wright of Cincinnati, OH, Cathyorn Telfair of Jax, FL, Cheryl Taylor of Jax., FL, and Shawntana Sherman of Jax., FL, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
