Marian Louise Laurain, 68, of Floral City died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness. She was born in Groveland, Mich., on May 29, 1932, to Clayton and Mary Marsh. She moved to Floral City in 1983 from St. Petersburg. She was a homemaker. She was Catholic. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. Laurain, on Nov. 28, 1998.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Totten of Inverness; four sons, Garry Laurain of Seminole, Earl Laurain Jr. of St. Petersburg, Leonard Laurain and Allen Laurain, both of Floral City; two sisters, Nola Eaton of Inverness and Jeannette Eddine of St. Petersburg; two brothers, Clayton E. Robert Henry Larsen Sr., 85, of Inverness died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000. He was born May 24, 1915, in Hancock, Mich., to the late Henry and Hilda (Eckstrom) Larsen and came here in 1974 from Livonia, Mich. He retired from General Motors Corporation as a financial analyst after 34 years of service. An avid golfer, he was a member and past president of the Inverness Golf & Country Club. He was Protestant.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne H. (Bach) Larsen; two sons, Dr. Robert H. Larsen Jr., of Sky Valley, Ga., and Thomas J. Larsen of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Karen L. Hill of Jackson, Miss.; and three grandchildren, Eric, Joni and Kimberly.

James Austin, 59, of Inverness, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the Mariner Health Care Center In Inverness. He was born Sept. 8, 1941, in Dooly County, Ga., to Robert Austin and Lelia B. (Royal) Austin. He came to this area 40 years ago from Cordele, Ga. He was a cement finisher with the Zorro Construction Co. in Inverness and attended the St. James Methodist Church in Inverness. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, John Austin, on Sept. 11, 1990. He was also preceded in death by his mother.

Lewis Crutcher, 79,Portland architect
PORTLAND, Ore. — Lewis P. Crutcher, a prominent architect who helped beautify Portland, died Sept. 19 of pneumonia. He was 79.
Raised in Seattle, Crutcher was well known for slide shows and lectures that highlighted the unsightly features of his adopted city.
Responding to his criticism, a downtown business group named him staff architect for a project to beautify the city. He helped restore several historic downtown buildings and directed the painting of Willamette River bridges.
Joseph F. Haas, 89, black vote pioneer
ATLANTA — Joseph F. Haas, who created the Voter Education Project to register Southern black voters in the 1970s and 1980s, died Tuesday of pneumonia at 89.
The Voter Education Project sent staff members through 11 Southern states to conduct nonpartisan registration workshops, classes and get-out-the vote campaigns. The project was credited with helping to increase black voter registration from 3 million in 1971 to 5.5 million in 1989.

He was born on Oct. 9, 1927, in Princeton to Wilson and Edna (Holland) Cash and came here in 1988 from Alhamdra, Calif. He was a retired procurement data clerk with the Department of Defense and served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the First Assembly of God of Inverness.

He was a truck driver, retiring from CABY Co. and Terminal Transport Co. after 25 years of service and was very active in the Teamster's Local No. 24 Retirees in Akron, Ohio. He formerly belonged to the Moose and Eagle lodges in Akron, Ohio, was a life member of the Men's Garden Club, and for 10 years was a licensed auctioneer in Ohio. She moved to Inverness in 1980 from Long Island, N.Y. She was an avid bingo player. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Inverness.
She is survived by her husband, Vincent Scheer of Inverness; sons, Peter Burrell and his wife Sue of Inverness, and Barry Burrell of Patchogue, N.Y.; daughters, Debby Burrell of Long Beach, Long Island, N.Y., and Donna Burrell of Massapequa, Long Island, N.Y.; brother, Frederick Fischer of Hialeah; and two grandchildren, Cara Burrell-Hill of Orlando and Eric Burrell of Queens, N.Y.

William Soutar, 70, of Dunnellon
William C. Soutar, 70, of Dunnellon died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in Ocala. Born in Detroit, Mich., he came here in 1991 from Palmetto, Fla. He was a retired vice president of a book distribution company, a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and a member of the Rainbow Springs Tennis Club.
Surviving are his wife, Ramona Soutar of Dunnellon; four sons, William (Colleen) Soutar of Brighton, Mich., Steven (Barbara) Soutar of Pinckney, Mich., Craig Soutar of Wolverine Lake, Mich., and Douglas (Shea) Soutar of Woodstock, Ga.; one daughter, Suzanne Soutar of Dewitt, Mich.; one sister, Sally Tapager of Pine Island; and one grandchild.
