She was born in New Jersey, raised in Rockland County, New York, and graduated in 1980 from Spring Valley Senior School. She obtained B.A. and M.A. degrees from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky.
She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Janet Broder of Hernando; and a sister, Jennifer Broder-Jones of Birmingham, Ala.

Mary Louise Brzeski, 93, of Inverness died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000. She was born in Uniontown, Pa., and moved here in 1983 from Bedford, Ohio. She was a meat cutter. She was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church. She was the widow of Eugene Brzeski. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Constance Louise Dolezal.
She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Cytlak of Fort Myers; two sisters, Helen Waligura and Jennie McKinney both of Ohio; seven granddaughters; 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Alice Katie Fenikis, 88, of Inverness died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Citrus Memorial Hospital. Born in Tamaqua, Pa., on Jan. 15, 1912, she came here 14 years ago from Miami. She was a retired licensed practical nurse. She was Greek Orthodox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Fenikis, in 1967 and a daughter, Beatrice Papas, in 1991.
Surviving are a daughter, Althea Sandlin of Inverness; two sisters, Ethel Homer of Phoenix, Ariz., and Edith Prakach of Chicago, Ill.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Paul Kaat, 75, of Hernando
Paul Kaat, 75, of Hernando died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Gainesville. Born in Sheboygan, Wis., he came here three years ago from Lake Wales. He owned and operated Paul Kaat Trucking of Winter Haven, retiring in 1991. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Beverly Hills. He loved boating and fishing, was a friend to all who met him and volunteered many hours in work at his church.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Marion Kaat of Hernando; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dan Cashman of Brandon, Paulette and Paul Moses of Haines City, Laurie and Bob Walter of Winter Haven, and Mary and Kenny Hamby of Lakeland; four brothers, Gillis Kaat of Rockledge, Anthony Kaat of Bingham, Wis., Edward Kaat of Plymouth, Wis., and Donald Kaat of Rib Lake, Wis.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Wesley Kaat.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Aug. 29, 1945, to Joseph C. and Margaret (Dunnigan) Gould, he came to Homosassa 101/2 years ago from there. He was a clerk for the Circle K Convenience Store for nine years at the U.S. 19 and Ozello Road location. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran. He was Catholic.
Surviving are his companion, Julip Boswell of Homosassa; three daughters, Jewel Gould of Homosassa, Melissa and Shelly Staniec both of Kirkville, Ill.; two sisters, JoAnn Harrington of Wilmington, N.C., and Margaret Garlock of Lafayette, N.Y.; one grandson, Alexander, of Kirkville, Ill.; one niece; one nephew; and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

Benjamin Thomas Kwasney, 81, of Inverness died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. He was born in Massena, N.Y., on Feb. 1, 1919, to Joseph and Sophie Kwasney. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum in Massena, N.Y., after 39 years of service. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Engineers. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Inverness and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus No. 6391, Inverness. He was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Massena Golf and Country Club. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Loraine, on Sept. 19, 1968.

He was a retired Master Sergeant after serving 27 years in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and a retired pastor serving 30 years in the ministry. He was a member of the Suncoast Baptist Church of Homosassa. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annie R. Leggett.

Barbara G. Utsey, 64, of Crystal River died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000. She was born in Waterbury, Conn., on Nov. 14, 1936, to John and Victoria (Adams) Gilroy. She came to Crystal River 21 years ago from Southbury, Conn. She had retired from United Airlines as a flight attendant. She remained active in the community and co-owned The Huffman’s Health Food Store in Crystal River. She was a very active member of the Crystal River United Methodist Church and volunteered in the church office. She was a member of the Crystal River Pilot Club and served on the board of directors for the Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association. She was the secretary for the Non-Profit Florida Low Income Housing Board and a tireless community volunteer.
She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Thomas A. Utsey of Crystal River; son, James Utsey of Inglis; two daughters, Lisa Utsey of DeBary and Jeanine Utsey of Naples; mother, Victoria Gilroy of Waterbury, Conn.; two brothers, James Gilroy of Crystal River and John Gilroy of Southbury, Conn.; two sisters, Mary Kelley and Elizabeth Kaisse, both of Waterbury, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Tripplett, Ky., he had been a seasonal resident in Florida for the past 10 years. He was a town marshal for the city of Knightsville, Ind. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was a retired firefighter with the Battle Creek Fire Department with 27 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church of Inverness.
