Beatrice Benoit Hickey, 81, of Hernando died Thursday, May 25, 2000, while visiting her daughter in Beauford, S.C. She was born in Brockton, Mass., and moved to Hernando in 1972 from St. Petersburg. She was a member of Leroy Rooks VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary; several civic associations; Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Hickey Jr., who died June 15, 1993.
Surviving are her four sons, Walter J. Hickey Jr., II, of Harrisburg, Miss., Richard Hickey of Inverness, Robert Hickey of Somerville, Mass., and Frank W. Hickey of Bushnell; two daughters, Merillee Shoemaker of Burton, S.C., and Jean Murphy of St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers, Raymond Benoit of Mayfield, Ohio, Ernie Benoit and Robert Benoit, both of Brockton, Mass.; one sister, Doris Boucher of Brockton, Mass.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

August "Guss" Emil Kolzow, 91, of Inverness died Monday, May 29, 2000. He was born in Amrum, Germany, and came to Inverness 22 years ago from Queens, N.Y. Mr. Kolzow owned and operated a grocery store in Richmond Hill, N.Y. He was a member of the DAV Chapter 70. He was Lutheran.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Inge Tonjes Kolzow of Inverness; son, Eric A. Kolzow of Orlando; daughter, Ingrid McNees of Deltona; and a granddaughter, Hollie McNees of Deltona.

Floyd J. Leonard Sr., 80, of Homosassa died Friday, May 26, 2000, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. He was born in Keyport, N.J., on Jan. 5, 1920, to Julia and William Leonard. He moved here 12 years ago from Bricktown, N.J. He was a retired fuel oil dealer. Mr. Leonard was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of the Union Beach Fire Company in Union Beach, N.J., and the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

Calvin B. Meahl, 72, of Inverness died Sunday, May 28, 2000. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and came to Inverness 32 years ago from Alexandria, Va. Mr. Meahl retired in 1992 from Lovell Brothers NAPA after 24 years. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Inverness where he was a deacon, former Sunday school director and teacher, usher, a member of the Baptism committee, Baptist Men, Sunrise Sunday School class and the nominating committee.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Colleen Hall Meahl of Inverness; two sons, Jeffrey B. (Kay) Meahl and Gregory W. (Linda Murphy) Meahl, both of Inverness; two brothers, Eugene (Betty) Meahl Jr. of Inverness and Charles (Tina) P. Stephen J. Stacklin Jr., 78, of Inglis died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his residence. Born in Annapolis, Md., he came here in 1985 from Jacksonville. Mr. Stacklin was retired vice president of Federal Reserve Bank in Jacksonville. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1954 and served eight years in the U.S. Navy. He was Catholic.

Charles W. Carman Jr., 76, of Crystal River died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Seven Rivers Community Hospital. He was born in Philippi, W.Va., on Nov. 16, 1923, to Opal and Charles W. Carman Sr. He moved here from Teays Valley, W.Va., three years ago. Mr. Carman retired from Union Carbide as the safety director. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was 32nd Degree Mason with 50-year pin. He was a graduate of the University of West Virginia with a Master's of Education.

Charles R. "Rabbit Man" Mercer Sr., of Inglis, died on Tuesday afternoon, May 2, 2000, at the Crystal River Health and Rehab Center in Crystal River. Born to James and Margaret (Hicks) Mercer in Miami, Mr. Mercer was a Florida native moving to this area 20 years ago. He was a retired Merchant Seaman and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was Protestant.

Bernice E. Bothwell, 91, of Inverness, formerly of Urbana, Ill., died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. She was born in Livermore Falls, Maine, on Jan. 23, 1909, to Frederick and Mary (Kimball) Sawtelle. She graduated from Bangor High School, Bangor, Maine, and worked as a stenographic secretary for the University of Illinois for 28 years. She married Vernon A. Bean Oct. 1, 1927, at East St. Louis, Ill. He died July 12, 1944. She later married Hugh R. Bothwell on April 12, 1952. Mrs. Bothwell's memberships included the Women of the Moose, Champaign, Ill., VFW Auxiliary No. 630, Urbana, Ill., the Urbana American Legion No. 71, the Inverness Hobby Klub, the Inverness Melody Organ Club, and the Inverness Golf and Country Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Vernon, three brothers and one sister.
Surviving are her husband, Hugh R. Bothwell; two sons, Vernon A. Bean Jr. of Michigan and Robert F. Mr. Edwards was retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) and owner of Edwards Septic Tank. He was a former member of Inglis Town Commission and Planning Board; Lions Club of Inglis. He was a Navy veteran of World War II; and Marine veteran of Korean conflict. He was Protestant and a member of Community Church of Yankeetown.

She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Pittsville, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Horn; and two sisters, Leona Vanderwalker and Doris Karloski.

He moved here from Sand Lake, Mich., 15 years ago. He retired from the automotive industry as a machinist foreman. He was Lutheran.

Otto T. Schmidtke, 83, of Inverness died Friday, May 5, 2000. He was born in Detroit, Mich., and moved to Inverness 22 years ago from Redford Township, Mich. He was a crib attendant who retired from General Motors Diesel after 32 years of service. He was a member of Grace Bible Fellowship in Hernando. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local no. 163 in Redford Township, Mich. He was an avid baseball fan who played Federation Baseball for many years. Locally, he volunteered his time helping many young people who wanted to learn to play baseball.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Virginia (Crooks) Schmidtke of Inverness; a son, Thomas Schmidtke of Canton, Mich.; two daughters, Lorraine Hawley of East Jordan, Mich., and Jean McCann of Farmington, Mich.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
