Arthur Palin, 77, of Hernando
Arthur J. "Jim" Palin, 77, of Hernando died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. He was born in Pawtucket, R.I., and moved to Hernando three years ago from West Palm Beach. He retired from the Palm Beach County School Board after 40 years of service, where he was a teacher, principal and administrator. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, who received a Purple Heart. He was Catholic.
He is survived by his wife, Allene Cato Palin, of Hernando; daughter, Patricia and her husband Douglas McCoy, of Hernando; brother, Raymond and his wife Yvette Palin, of Cumberland, R.I.; sister, Dolores DeCosta, of Cumberland, R.I. and many other loving family members and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness and generosity by all those who were blessed to know him.

Gerald D. Price Sr., 60, of Inglis died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Seven Rivers Community Hospital. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, on Oct. 5, 1939, the son of Gerald and Waynetta (Brandt) Price. He came here 15 years ago from Miami. He was a retired financial analyst for Eastern Airlines. He was a concert pianist, who graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He also received his B.A. degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
He is survived by his son, Gerald D. Price Jr., of Ypsilanti, Mich.; daughter Lisa Marie Price, of Morriston; brother Deni Jon Price and wife Sunny, of Crystal River; and sister Dolores Yvonne Price, of Russells Point, Ohio.

She was the daughter of Walter H. and Muriel Sanders Deeks, and came to Lecanto 30 years ago from Santa Barbara, Calif. She was a graduate from Wayne State University. She was a retired teacher from Michigan State University.

Ethel Dawn Jones Spivey, 78, formerly of Dunnellon died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Maitland. She was born in Dunnellon and lived there until the 1940s before moving to Altamonte Springs. She was a retired U.S. Navy nurse during World War II and a retired mental health counselor. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Inverness.
Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Wheeler of Brandon; one son, Bill Spivey of Altamonte Springs; two sisters, Ruth Riley and Frances Porter, both of Dunnellon; and three grandsons, Thomas Wheeler and Jonathan Wheeler, both of Brandon, and William Spivey of Altamonte Springs.

Dorothy Mary Doran, 75, of Inverness died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Citrus Memorial Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 26, 1924, she came here in 1977 from Brentwood, Long Island, N.Y. Mrs. Doran retired from the Brentwood School District as a cafeteria manager. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.
Surviving are her loving husband of 56 years, Francis J. Dixie Egan, 50, of Dunnellon
Dixie Lee Egan, 50, of Dunnellon-Hills of Ocala, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala. She was born in South Bend, Ind., and came here from Niles, Mich., in 1982. Mrs. Egan was manager at Rainbow River Campground until 1991, and also lived there. She was a homemaker most of her life. She was Christian. She graduated in early 2000 from the Citizens Academy of Marion County Sheriff's Office, Class XVII, along with other family members. She was an outdoors person, known for her love for horses, teaching youngsters to swim. She was "Mom" to many who knew her, a devoted friend to all she met, and had a great extended family.
Surviving are her husband of nine years, Matthew L. Egan of Dunnellon; two sons, James Richard Black and Matthew Egan III, both of Ocala; four daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and David Hopkins of Dunnellon, Jody Renee and Danny Heath-Cross of Ocala, Jeni and Dr. Bill Cluff, M.D., of LaVeta, Colo., Tammy and David Bowles of Fernandina Beach; two brothers, Claude "Dick" Heacox of Williston and Carl Heacox of Niles, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Alyson, Patrick, Sarah, Jilli, Lindsy, Samantha, Andy and Sean; Uncle Pete and Aunt Vernie Schrader of Niles, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

Albert Harnish, 66, of Homosassa
Albert G. Harnish, 66, of Homosassa died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at his home. Born in Boston, Mass., he lived in many places throughout his life, including El Paso, Texas, Fort Sill, Okla., Kitzingen, Germany, Washington, D.C., Springfield, Va., Madrid, Spain, Virginia Beach, Va., and Lafayette, Ind. He came to Florida four years ago with his wife Joan. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Intelligence Branch of the U.S. Army for 21 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war and was stationed at the Pentagon under the Secretary of the Army and served as Army Attache in Madrid Spain from 1970-1975. After retirement from the Army, he worked as vice president at a financial futures investment company and then as a teacher of finance at a community college in Indiana. Upon his graduation from Boston Latin High School, he went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Boston University (1955) and his master's degree from Golden Gate University (1975). In Homosassa, he was an active volunteer with the AARP Tax Aid Program and with the Sugarmill Woods Security Patrol. His most loved hobby was the ongoing renovation of his grandfather's farmhouse in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was preceded in death by two beloved brothers-in-law, Richard (Dick) and Gerald (Jerry) Sudbey.
Survivors include his wife, Joan (Sudbey) Harnish; three sons, Steven of Boston, Mass., Eric of Dublin, Calif., and Christopher of Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters, Carol Underhill of Westport, Conn., Shirley Crist of Clarksburg, Md.; three beloved daughters-in-law, Joanne, Beth and Kristine. He was known as "Poppy" to his three grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Kaity), Samuel (Sam) and Madelyn (Maddy). Other survivors include 27 nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his many friends.

Marion H. Hodges, 92, of Lecanto died Sunday, June 25, 2000. She was born in Clinton, Maine, and came to Lecanto eight years ago from Gulfport. Mrs. Hodges was a retired registered nurse. She was a life member of the St. Petersburg Opera Guild. She was member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, St. Petersburg. She was wife of the late Mr. Ivan C. Hodges, who died in 1965.
Surviving are two nieces, Eleanor Lester of Lecanto and Elaine Payson of Sun City West, Ariz.; and grand nephew, David Lester of Lecanto.

Jerry Hussey, 77, of Dunnellon
The Rev. Jerry R. Hussey, 77, of Dunnellon died Saturday evening, June 24, 2000, at the Crystal River Health and Rehab Center in Crystal River. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, to E. Roscoe and Edna (Hahn) Hussey in Tampa and came here 11 years ago from Manatee County. The Rev. Hussey was a retired attorney at law, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Citronelle, member of the Crystal River Civitan Club, past commander of American Legion Post 24 in Bradenton, 40 & 8 of Bradenton, past judge advocate Fla. District, and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hussey; son, Tom Hussey; and mother, Edna Hussey.
Survivors include four daughters, Susan Faith Freemon of Tampa, Connie Thompson of Bradenton, Charity Boudouris of Charlottesville, Va., and Beth Hope Chambers of Fairfield, Conn.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Herman Johnson, 57, of Hernando died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness. He was born in Wilkesboro, N.C., on Dec. 25, 1942. Mr. Johnson was a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his father, Millard Johnson.
Surviving are his mother, Ola Johnson of Inverness; five sons, Chuck Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif., Eddie Johnson of Bronson, Michael and Joe Johnson, both of Hernando, and Tommy Johnson of Byron, Ga.; one daughter, Barbara Eby of Joelton, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Coco of Byron, Ga.; two sisters, Gerta Maie Johnson and Faye Odom, both of Inverness; and 10 grandchildren.

Mrs. Knuff was a homemaker. She was a member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, Citrus Springs, and the Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church Group (WELCG) of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Temperance, Mich.

George Charles Shinn, 67, of Crystal River died Monday morning, June 26, 2000, at Seven Rivers Community Hospital. He was born in Trenton, N.J., on Dec. 27, 1932, the son of Charles and Marion (Tilton) Shinn. He came here 11 years ago from Ewingville, N.J. Mr. Shinn was a retired chef. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He wa a member of the American Legion. He belonged to the Crystal River United Methodist Church and was a member of the choir. He enjoyed volunteering with his chorus group, singing at area hospitals and care facilities.
He is survived by his mother, Marion Shinn of Crystal River; a brother, Marvin Shinn of Maine; one niece and two nephews.

Addie Bertine, 78, of Crystal River
Addie Bertine, 78, of Crystal River died Wednesday afternoon, June 28, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident. She was born in Red Level on Feb. 21, 1922, the daughter of Andrew and Fleta (Cannon) Strickland, and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was retired from the Citrus County School System after 26 years of service as the cafeteria manager at Crystal River High School. She was a member of the Gulf to Lake Baptist Church of Crystal River and her church, family and friends were her life. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Crystal River for 40 years. From 1983 to 1985 she volunteered with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, traveling to Israel as a missionary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Vernon "Runt" Bertine in 1971.
Her surviving family members are two sons, Vernon "Skip" Bertine of Miami and the Rev. Lloyd Bertine and wife Nancy of Crystal River; three daughters, Connie and husband Wesley Green of Red Level, JoAnne and husband Carl Haigler of Istachatta, and Linda and husband Glen Stewart of Ocala; three sisters, Lillian Bertine of Crystal River, Jessica Luther of Orlando, and Dorothy Milner of Clermont; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and a community of loving friends.

Robert Canon, 63, of Crystal River died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at home, under the loving care of his wife and Hospice. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he moved here seven years ago from Middletown, N.Y. Mr. Canon was a teacher of printing and photography at Ridge Hill Rehabilitation Center, Yonkers, N.Y. He was a former owner of family business called Speedy Printing, in Middletown, N.Y. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Newport News. He was a former trustee of Fraternal Order of Eagles 544, Middletown, N.Y. He was a member of Hoffman Lodge No. 412, F&AM, Middletown, N.Y. and Walker Valley Golf Club in Wallkill, N.Y. He was a gifted artist in the art of woodburning and had exhibited his work at Central Ridge Library, Beverly Hills.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Barbara Sanborn Canon; two sons, Michael Canon of San Jacinto, Calif., and Raymond Canon of Crystal River; two daughters, Roberta Cram of Southington, N.C., and Lisa Belsha of Raleigh, N.C.; five brothers, Frederick Quackenbush of Carmel, N.Y., Richard Quackenbush of Floral City, Raymond Moran of Statesville, N.C., Harvey Quackenbush of Groton, Conn., and William Quackenbush of Beacon, N.Y.; two sisters, Carol Florio of Port Richey and Patricia Deshon of Yonkers, N.Y.; five grandsons and one granddaughter; and many nephews and nieces.

Roger Stephen Harker, 66, of Inverness died Wednesday, June 28, 2000. He was born in Redding, Conn., and came to Inverness in January from there. Mr. Harker was a highway superintendent for city of Redding, Conn., after 181/2 years of service. He had previously worked for Nazzaro Brothers in Georgetown, Conn., for 25 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a life member of the Redding Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and member of the Congregational Church in Redding, Conn.

He was a retired tool expediter for Ford Motor Company working for 30 years, Cleveland, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was Baptist.

Rowena K. Hill Pendergast, 76, of Crystal River died Wednesday afternoon, June 28, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident. She was born in Woolmarket, Miss., on May 27, 1924 to Ludy and Annie (Khron) King. She was a longtime Crystal River resident, moving here 32 years ago from St. Petersburg, where she had also lived for many years. She was a retired bookkeeper for Crystal River Middle School. She was a member of the Florida Power Pioneers Club. She was a faithful member of the Gulf to Lake Baptist Church. She was active in the Shepherd Ministry at the church, caring for the homebound. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Hill, and second husband, Frank Pendergast.
She is survived by her son, Timothy R. Hill of Largo; her daughter, Cheryl and husband Lynn Camron of Inverness; brother, Ludy King Sr., and sister, Thelma Utzelman, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends.

She was a retired records clerk for Tawas-St. Joseph Hospital of Tawas, Mich.
