James Cooney
James D. Cooney, 78, of Sebastian, died April 25, 1998, at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 25, 1919, in
Wayne, Mich., and moved to Sebastian 12 years ago from Detroit.
Mr. Cooney was a retired school
administrator. He was a member of
St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian, the Polish American Club of
Vero Beach and the Sebastian River
Band. He was a veteran of World
War II, member of the Ranger Battallions Association of World War II,
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
10210 of Sebastian, life member of
the Disabled American Veterans,
member of the American Legion
Post 189, Sebastian, military order
of the Purple Heart, Indian River
County Chapter 494, and American
Ex-Prisoners of War, Fort Pierce.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine;
three sons, William Cooney of Fellsmere, Robert Cooney of Vallejo,
Calif., and Christopher Cooney of
Sebastian; three daughters, Martha
Cooney of Detroit, Laura Cooney of
Sebastian, and Ruth Cooney of Vero
Beach; three sisters, Paula Madigan
and Therse Stuve of Livonia, Mich.,
and Mary MacLeod of Dearborn,
Mich.; a brother, Thomas Cooney of
Birmingham, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was held April 29
at the St. Sebastian Catholic Church.
Burial followed in Sebastian Cemetery.

Louise Ammons
Louise I. Ammons, 92, of Sebastian, died April 24, 1998, at Integrated Health Services of Vero
Beach after a prolonged illness.
She was born in Philadelphia and
moved to Sebastian in June from
Deerfield Beach.
Ms. Ammons was a member of
First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield Beach. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are three stepdaughters, Virginia Stocker, of Sebastian,
Nancy Mortimer, of St. Augustine,
and Charlotte Blizzard, of Barington, N.J.; and seven step-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Ivy Hill
Cemetery, Philadelphia.

LeRoy Magee
LeRoy Magee, 77, 921 Sequoia
St., Barefoot Bay, died April 22,
1998, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center, Melbourne, after a
prolonged illness.
He was born March 6, 1921, in
Hempstead, N.Y., and moved to
Barefoot Bay in 1980 from Hauppauge, N.Y.
Mr. Magee worked as a safety
engineer for Estee Lauder, Melville,
N.Y.
He was a disabled U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II. He was a
member of the Azan Temple, Melbourne; an honorary member of the
Volunteer Fire Department, Hauppauge; a member of the Volunteer
Fire Department Benevolent Association, Hauppauge; Sebastian Municipal Golf Course, Sebastian; Barefoot
Bay Country Club, Barefoot Bay;
and Free and Accepted Masons,
Lodge No. 822, Lynbrook, N.Y. He
was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Barefoot Bay.
Surviving are his wife of 53
years, Florence; two sons, Raymond
Magee, of Ravena, N.Y., and Craig
Magee, of Glendale, Ariz.; five
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held
April 26 at Concordia Lutheran
Church, Barefoot Bay, with the Rev.
Grant A. Kilps officiating. Interment
followed at Fountainhead Memorial
Park, Palm Bay.

Vera Shearer
Vera L. Shearer, 78, of Fellsmere, died unexpectedly April 20,
1998, at Holmes Regional Medical
Center, Melbourne.
She was born Dec. 17, 1919, in
Wrightsville, Ga., and moved to
Fellsmere in 1971 from Vero Beach.
Mrs. Shearer was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Baptist
Church of Fellsmere, Fellsmere, and
a former member of First Nazarene
Church, Eau Gallie.
Surviving are her husband, Neal;
one daughter, Cheryl Kendall, of
Melbourne; four grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held April 25 at
First Baptist Church, Fellsmere, with
the Rev. Buddy Johns officiating. Interment followed at Melbourne
Cemetery, Melbourne.

Clara Nixon
Clara Louise Nixon, 88, of Sebastian and Caledonia, N.Y., died
April 25, 1998, at Sebastian River
Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 27, 1910, in
Genesee, N.Y., and was a winter resident of Sebastian for 10 years.
Mrs. Nixon was a homemaker.
She was a Catholic and a member of
the Booster Club, Batavia, N.Y.
Surviving are two sons, Fred
Nixon and Courtney Nixon, both of
Caledonia; two daughters, Judy
Kiiig, of Caledonia, and Louise
Nixon, of Geneseo; one sister, Helen
Roseborough, of Dansville, N.Y.;
five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Nixon will be transferred to
the Alhart Funeral Home, Caledonia, for services and burial at Mount
Pleasant Cemetery, York, N.Y.

Horace Cullins
Horace Greely Cullins, 76, of Sebastian,
died April 30, 1998, at his home after a brief
illness.
He was born Jan. 18, 1922, in South
Norfolk, Va., and moved to Sebastian in
1990 from Chesapeake, Va.
Mr. Cullins was a machinist at Norfolk
Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., for 18
years. He served in the U.S. Navy as a chief
machinist's mate for 22 years and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and
the Vietnam War. He was a member of
American Legion of Sebastian, Post No.
189; American Legion Post No. 280, Chesapeake; Fleet Reserve Branch No. 40, Chesapeake; Fleet Reserve, Melbourne; and Masonic Lodge, Norfolk, Va.; and was a
chairman and counselor of Boys State of
Florida.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mary;
three sons, Mark Steven Cullins, of Hampton, Va., Patrick Neal Cullins, of South
Mills, NC., and Michael William Cullins, of
Fort Pierce; one brother, Gilbert E. Cullins,
of Chesapeake, Va.; and five grandchildren.
A funeral was held May 4 at the Strunk
Funeral Home, Sebastian, with the Rev.
Mark Greene of Westside Baptist Church,
Fort Pierce, officiating. Military honors followed, conducted by Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post No. 10210 and American Legion
Post No. 189.

Alton Williams
Alton Swanson Williams, 89, 2122 E.
Lakeview Drive, Sebastian, died April 30,
1998, at Sebastian River Medical Center
after a brief illness.
He was born April 2, 1909, in Petersburg, Va., and moved to Sebastian in 1978
from Farmville, Va.
Mr. Williams was a member and elected
officer of the Moose in Farmville. He also
was a member of the Oddfellows in Farmville.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; two sons,
Alton Swanson Williams Jr., of McGaheysville, Va., and Fletcher Williams of Lilburn,
Ga.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be no public repose, visitation
or service.
Arrangements were under the direction
of Fountainhead Memorial Funeral Home in
Palm Bay.
Paul Lysko
Paul Benjamin Lysko Sr., 67, of Barefoot Bay, died unexpectedly April 29, 1998,
at Sebastian River Medical Center, Roseland.
He was born June 29, 1930, in Newburgh, N.Y., and moved to Barefoot Bay
four years ago from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Mr. Lysko was an assemblyman at International Business Machines for 36 years. He
was a member of St. Luke's Catholic
Church, Barefoot Bay. He was a former
member of the Knights of Columbus, Barefoot Bay. He was a member of the International Business Machine's Quarter Century
Club and a former treasurer of the Canada
Club, Barefoot Bay. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Patricia; three sons, Paul Lysko Jr., Allan Lysko
and Mark Lysko, all of Poughkeepsie; two
daughters, Patricia Long, of Poughkeepsie,
and Susan Calia, of Saugerties, N.Y.; two
sisters, Delores Rose, of Barefoot Bay, and
Rosemary Werner, of Raleigh, N.C.; three
brothers, John Lysko, of Pleasant Valley,
N.Y., and Robert Lysko and Michael
Grande, both of Poughkeepsie; and 13
grandchildren.
Mr. Lysko is being transferred to the
Parmele Funeral Home, Poughkeepsie, with
interment at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

Robert Willey
Robert Maurice Willey, 71, 156 Wood
ville Road, Falmouth, Maine, died unexpectedly April 25, 1998, at his residence.
He was born April 7,1927, in Portland,
Maine, and was a winter resident of Sebastian since 1981.
Mr. Willey was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. He was a supervisor
with Hillcrest Foods prior to retirement. He
also worked for Harbor Fish, Portland, and
L.L. Bean Inc., Freeport, Maine. He was a
member of Falmouth Congregational
Church where he served as trustee and deacon.
Surviving are one son, David R. Willey,
of King George, Va.; one daughter, Cynthia
Willey Brandt, of Sebastian; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Falmouth Congregational Church, with the
Rev. Dawn Berry officiating. Private interment will be at a later date at Blanchard
Cemetery, Falmouth.

Irene Case
Irene S. Case, 89, of Barefoot
Bay, died May 6, 1998, at her residence after a prolonged illness.
She was born Feb. 5, 1909, in
St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada, and moved to Barefoot Bay 24
years ago from Albany, N.Y.
Mrs. Case was a registered nurse.
She was a graduate of Albany Hospital School of Nursing, Albany. She
was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and
Barefoot Bay Homeowners Association, Barefoot Bay.
Surviving are her husband of 64
years, Marshall; one sister, Ethel
Kendall, of Toronto, Canada; and
one brother, Beeke Sansford, of Toronto.
At the family's request, there will
be no services.

John Keyes
John Milton Keyes, 82, of Roseland, died May 5, 1998, at Sebastian
River Medical Center, Roseland,
after a brief illness.
He was born April 21, 1916, in
Detroit, Mich., and moved to Roseland 15 years ago from St. Simons
Island, Ga.
Mr. Keyes was co-owner and
co-founder of High Performance
Tube Inc., with offices in Warren,
N.J., and plants in Brunswick, Ga.
He was a charter member of First
Presbyterian Church of Sebastian
and a member of the Rotary Club,
both of Sebastian. He was a 1938
graduate of Michigan State University. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps
veteran of World War II and was a
recipient of the Bronze Star. He was
a lifelong member of the American
Society for Metals. He was a member the Exchange Club, Sebastian;
American Society for Testing Materials; American Society of Mechanical
Engineers.
Surviving are his wife of 54
years, Phyllis; two daughters, Pamela
Kaye Keyes, of Roseland, and Karen
Lynn Zerndt, of Nokomis; one
brother, Bill Keyes, of Holiday; one
sister, Mary May, of Zephyrhills; six
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held
May 9 at First Presbyterian Church,
Sebastian, with the Rev. Dr. Chris
E. Zorn officiating.

George Parker
George Parker, 83, of Sebastian,
died May 5, 1998, at Sebastian River
Medical Center, Roseland, after a
brief illness.
He was born June 19, 1914, in
Langholm, Scotland, and moved to
Sebastian in 1981 from Hollywood.
Mr. Parker was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a
member of Indian River Cremation
Society.
Surviving are three sons, Kevin
Parker, of Fort Pierce, Scott Parker,
of Sebastian, and Clint Parker, of
Grant; and two grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will
be no repose or visitation.
A private burial at sea will be
held at a later date.

George Schmalhofer
George F. Schmalhofer, 79, of
Barefoot Bay, died May 4, 1998, in
Micco after a prolonged illness.
He was born Nov. 10, 1918, in
Queens Village, N.Y., and moved to
Barefoot Bay in 1978 from Rehoboth Beach, Del.
Mr. Schmalhofer retired in 1967
as a lieutenant colonel with the Delaware State Police, Dover, Del. He
was a past president of the Delaware
Association of Chiefs of Police, director of Harvard Associates in Police Science, director of Police Chiefs
of South Eastern Pennsylvania, director of Delaware Valley Professional Police Officials and life member of International Association
Chiefs of Police.
He was a member of Shield and
Square Club of Delaware; Jefferson
Lodge No. 15 A.F.&A.M., Lewes,
Del.; commodore of Lewes Yacht
Club, Lewes; board member and
treasurer of Camp Barnes, Millville,
Del.; Maryland-Delaware Chapter
National Academy Association, Dover; Security Officers Association,
Philadelphia, Pa.; Barefoot Bay Golf
Club, Barefoot Bay; Retired Police
Association, Barefoot Bay; and
chairman of the Police Committee of
City of Rehoboth Beach.
He also served in the U.S. Coast
Guard-Military Police Criminal Investigation and Detective Commander Retired Reserve; and was a
special investigator for the Federal
Department of Transportation for
eight years. In 1964 he published
"Delaware-Maryland State Police
Use Fugitive Search Plan," an FBI
Law Enforcement Bulletin. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Elizabeth Lee West, of Harpers
Ferry, W.Va.; a son, George F.
Schmalhofer, of San Diego, Calif.;
four grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
A full state police honors ceremony was held May 11 at Parsell-Atkins Lodge Chapel, Lewes, Del.,
with burial at Lewes Presbyterian
Cemetery.
