Tommy Thompson
J.W. "Tommy" Thompson, a nine-year volunteer on the
Sebastian Planning and Zoning Commission and frequent
observer of Sebastian City Council meetings, died Nov. 16
at Holmes Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He
was 80.
Many residents and city employees remembered Thompson as
a considerate and kind person who helped out whenever
possible.
"He was the last of a dying breed of gentlemen," said
Deputy City Clerk Sally Maio. "He was always so
thoughtful."
City Clerk Kay O'Halloran said Thompson often helped
clean up after the City Council or Planning and Zoning
Commission meetings and made sure the doors were locked.
"He would never let us walk to our cars alone after a
meeting," she said. "He was the most considerate and kind
human being that I ever knew."
After nine years on the Planning and Zoning Commission,
including four as chairman, Thompson left the commission
in 1996 when his term expired. The city's Land
Development Code prohibited him from seeking
re-appointment.
"I was very saddened by the news," said Commission
Chairman Herbert Munsart, who served with Thompson. "I'll
miss him. He was a good man. He was as honest as the day
is long."
Thompson also served as an alternate member of the city's
Riverfront Committee in 1996, helping to develop an
ordinance for the riverfront district.
Born March 26, 1918, in Passaic, Mo., Thompson worked as
an engineer in an office in Springfield and later in
Omaha, Neb., before moving to Florida in 1956, where he
served as a civilian civil engineer at Patrick Air Force
Base.
