Kenneth Corum
Kenneth L. Corum Sr., 80, of Wabasso, died Dec. 5, 1998, in
Largo after a prolonged illness.
He was born May 30, 1918, in New Castle, Ind., and moved
to Wabasso in 1957 from Washington, D.C.
Mr. Corum was an electrician and the owner of Sam's
Electric, Wabasso. He was a member of First Baptist
Church, Wabasso. He was in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and
was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He
was a member of American Legion Post No. 189, Sebastian.
Surviving are three sons, Carl Corum, of Vero Beach,
Leslie Corum, of Evergreen Park, Ill., and Lawrence
Corum, of Sebastian; one daughter, Deborah Hazlett, of
Largo; one brother, Max Corum, of Melbourne; two sisters,
Madeline Fannin, of Sebastian, and Martha Wimmer, of
Roseland; eight grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Dec. 11 at First Baptist Church, Wabasso,
with the Rev. Wesley Weaver officiating.
Intermentfollowed at Winter Beach Cemetery, Winter Beach.

Arnold House
Arnold H. House, 77, of Sebastian, died Nov. 30, 1998, at
Sebastian River Medical Center after a prolonged illness.
He was born March 21, 1921, in New York, N.Y., and moved
to Sebastian eight years ago from Long Island, N.Y.
Mr. House was a retired salesman for Eaton Corp. on Long
Island. He was a member of Congregational Church in Port
Washington, N.Y., and was a World War II U.S. Army
veteran.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Janet; two daughters,
Irene Torino, of Garden City, N.Y., and Karen Dybus, of
Wantagh, N.Y.; one sister, Mildred Dahlbender, of
Atlanta, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will be no repose or
visitation. No services are scheduled.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Indian
River Cremations Inc., Vero Beach.
Wesley Lewis
Wesley S. "Wes" Lewis, 79, of Little Hollywood, died Dec.
1, 1998, at Sebastian River Medical Center, Roseland, after
a prolonged illness.
He was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Lakewood, Ohio, and moved
to Little Hollywood in 1956 from Berea, Ohio.
Mr. Lewis was the owner of Vero Cabinet & Supply, Vero
Beach, prior to retirement. He was a member of First
Baptist Church, Micco, where he served as a deacon,
superintendent and teacher of the Men's Sunday School
class.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Dorothy; two sons,
Ronald A. Lewis, of Melbourne, and Richard W. Lewis, of
Rockledge; four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 12:30-1 p.m. today.
The funeral was held at Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian
chapel, with the Rev. W.J. Stephenson officiating.
Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort
Pierce.

to one's favorite charity in Mr. Lewis' memory.
Ruth Miller
Ruth B. Miller, 83, of Anderson, S.C., died Dec. 1, 1998,
in Oconee Memorial Hospital, Anderson.
Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Dave, Ky. and
lived in Vero Beach 1957 to 1990.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Miller worked at Piper
Aircraft. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where
she was a member of W.M.U. and the Eastern Star.
Surviving are one son, Ronald L. Miller, of Tamassee,
S.C.; four daughters, Shirley Kelley, Brenda Patterson
and Karen LaBranche, all of Anderson, and Mary Stough, of
Wabasso; one brother, Ivan Wright, of Port Lavaka, Texas;
15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was Dec. 5 at Hillcrest Memorial
Gardens, Fort Pierce, with the Rev. James Newsome
officiating.
Local arrangements are being handled by Cox-Gifford
Funeral Home.
Joseph Pardo
Joseph John Pardo, 54, of Barefoot Bay, died Dec. 2, 1998,
at his residence after a prolonged illness.
He was born May 24, 1944, in New York, N.Y., and moved to
Barefoot Bay 11 years ago from Astoria, N.Y.
Mr. Pardo was an electrician at Broadway Maintenance, New
York. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers, a professional singer with the
Devotions, and a member of the WCBS Radio Hall of Fame,
all of New York.
Surviving are one son, Scott M. Pardo, of Elmont, N.Y.,
and his mother, Olive Cubeiro, of Barefoot Bay.

The funeral was Dec. 5 at the Strunk Funeral Home,
Sebastian chapel with the Rev. Tom Gibbony officiating.
Interment followed at Sebastian Cemetery, Sebastian.

George Viera
George Viera, 77, of Barefoot Bay, died Dec. 5, 1998, at
his residence after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Viera was born Jan. 24, 1921, in Portsmouth, R.I.,
and moved to Barefoot Bay six years ago from Hollywood.
He was the owner/operator of Charlie's Shoe Repair in
Hollywood. He was also a driver with the Hollywood Fire
Department, and was a member of the New England Club, the
Smoothies Dance Club and the Barefoot Bay Homeowners
Association, all of Barefoot Bay.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a
member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, Barefoot Bay.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Isabelle; a son, John
Viera, of Micco; two daughters, Suzanne Spencer, of
Tampa, and Donna Madio, of Clearwater; one brother,
Albert Viera, of Barefoot Bay; four sisters, Caroline
Couto, of Grant, Dorothy Paiva, of Swansea, Mass., and
Frances Lawrence and Olive Souza, both of Warren, R.I.;
and one grandchild.
Services and visitation are to be private.

Jefferson Browne
Jefferson L. Browne, 80, of Vero Beach, died Nov. 23,
1998, at Indian River Memorial Hospital after a prolonged
illness.
He was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved
to Vero Beach in 1979 from Coral Gables.
Mr. Browne was owner of Tropical Plan Service, Vero
Beach, and retired as an architectural designer. He was a
member of Antique Toy Collectors of America, Indian River
County Chamber of Commerce and Elks Club, all in Vero
Beach. He was a member of Train Collectors Association
and Automobile Club of America. He was a U.S. Coast Guard
veteran of World War II, and an Episcopalian.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Beverly
Browne Marinaro, of Delray Beach, and Barbara Griscom, of
Fort Walton Beach; one stepson, Scott F. Barbour, of
Sebastian; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
At the family's request there will be no repose or
visitation.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Key
West.

Elizabeth Burke
Elizabeth M. "Betty" Burke, 73, of Barefoot Bay, died
Nov. 24, 1998, at her residence after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Manhattan, N.Y., and moved
to Barefoot Bay in 1980 from Glendale, N.Y.,
Mrs. Burke was a homemaker. She was a member of St.
Luke's Catholic Church, Women's Golf Association and
Honor New York Club, and a former member of the Twirlers,
all of Barefoot Bay.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Patrick; a
daughter, Patricia A. Brande, of Stony Brook, N.Y.; three
sons, Kevin M. Burke, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., William
Burke, of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Daniel Burke, of
Oyster Bay, N.Y.; two sisters, Katherine Burke, of
Barefoot Bay, and Nora Roche, of Belle Harbor, N.Y.; and
12 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was Nov. 28 at St. Luke's Catholic
Church, Barefoot Bay, with the Rev. Patrick O'Carroll
officiating.

Catharine Carbo
Catharine Elizabeth Carbo, 92, of Sebastian, died Nov.
22, 1998, at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne,
after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 27, 1906, in Philadelphia, Pa., and
moved to Sebastian in 1990 from Lansdale, Pa.
Mrs. Carbo was an office clerk for Woolworth's. She was a
member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, Sebastian, and
Sacred Heart of Jesus, Philadelphia.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Carbo of Towson, Md.; and a
daughter, Mary Lupica of Sebastian.
A committal service was Nov. 30 at St. Matthew's Catholic
Church Cemetery, Conshohocken, Pa.

James Paulley
James John "Jim" Paulley Jr., 66, of Sebastian, died
Nov. 22, 1998, at Sebastian River Medical Center,
Roseland, after a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 8, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pa., and
moved to Sebastian four years ago from Orlando.
Mr. Paulley was employed at RCA in Camden, N.J., for 18
years. He later retired from Martin Marietta in Orlando.
He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the
Sebastian Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10210 and was
a member, saxophone player and music director of the
Melotones band.
Surviving are his wife, Joan; four sons, Eric Paulley, of
Oklahoma City, Okla., Jim Paulley, of Melbourne, Mark
Hammer, of Ocala, and Mike Hammer, of Eureka; two
daughters, Karen Camm, of Palm Bay, and Linda Thomas, of
Philadelphia; four grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
A memorial service was Nov. 25 at Strunk Funeral Home
Chapel, Sebastian, with the Rev. Paul Hauenstein
officiating.

Evelyn Holmgren
Evelyn O. Holmgren, 84, of Barefoot Bay, died Nov. 24,
1998, at Royal Palm Convalescent Center in Vero Beach.
She was born March 22, 1914, in Gulfport, Miss., and
moved to Barefoot Bay four years ago from Connersville,
Ind.
Mrs. Holmgren was a homemaker. She was a member of the
Cary Club, Fayette Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and
Connersville Country Club, all in Connersville.
Surviving are her husband of 31 years, Robert; two sons,
Theodore Harris, of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Walter
Harris ; three stepsons, John S. Holmgren and Mark G.
Holmgren, both of Seattle, Wash., and Robert C. Holmgren,
of Boise, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
At the family's request, there will be no repose or

George F. Derby Jr., 55, of Vero Beach, died Nov. 26,

He was born Jan. 11, 1943, in East Orange, N.J., and
moved to Vero Beach three years ago from Big Pine Key.
Mr. Derby was a pipe fitter in the construction industry
in Key West.
Surviving are his mother and father, Lorraine and George
Derby, of Bartonsville, Pa.; five sons, Chris A. Autrey,
of Sebastian, and Landon S. Derby, Darrell F. Derby,
Jason D. Derby and Nathan J. Derby, all of Vero Beach;

Elmer Whitaker
Elmer Whitaker, 86, of Sebastian, died Nov. 25, 1998, at
Integrated Health Services, Palm Bay, after a prolonged
illness.
He was born March 24, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa., and
moved to Indian River County in 1979 from New Jersey.
Mr. Whitaker was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of
Polish American Social Club, Sebastian.
Surviving are his wife, Charlotte; one son, Denis
Whitaker, of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; one stepson, Jan
Hohman, of Seaville, N.J.; one stepdaughter, Joan Lyons,
of Madisonville, Ky.; two sisters, Jennie May, of
Sebastian, and Frances Bambrick, of Douglassville, Pa.;
two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Harvey Hiller
Harvey William Hiller, 60, of Sebastian, died Nov. 29,
1998, at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Detroit, Mich., and moved
to Sebastian four years ago from Port Huron, Mich.
Mr. Hiller was a Jehovah's Witness.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Sharren; two
daughters, Laura Hiller, of Mount Clemens, Mich., and
Tracey Hiller, of Michigan; one son, Todd William Hiller,
of Chesterfield Township, Mich.; one sister, Marilyn
Brown, of East Pointe, Mich.; his mother, Bernice Hiller,
of East Pointe; and three grandchildren.

Carl Martin
Carl H. Martin, 86, 14485 101st St., Fellsmere, died Nov.
29, 1998, at Tandem Nursing Home after a prolonged
illness.
He was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Milner, Ga., and moved to
Fellsmere in 1980 from Miami.
Surviving are two sisters, Carolyn Swint, of Milner, and
Jane Dupree, of Griffin, Ga.; a brother, Ziegler Martin,
of Griffin; and a stepson, Sam Oaks, of Palm Bay.
A private burial was held at Fountainhead Memorial Park
Cemetery, Palm Bay.

Christine Rhode
Elena Christine Rhode, 82, of Sebastian, died Nov. 26,
1998, at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, after
a brief illness.
Mrs. Rhode was born March 4, 1916, in Providence, Ky.,
and moved to Sebastian 16 years ago from Bay City, Mich.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of
Sebastian.
Surviving are her husband of 16 years, Clarence; a son,
William Widman, of Fellsmere; two sisters, Nevelyn
DeRousha, of Pontiac, Mich., and Florence Hamby, of
Dawson Springs, Ky.; three grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
