JOE E. EARMAN DIES AT AGE 82
Joe S. Earman, 82, an Indian River County pioneer and the man who was
responsible for construction of the present high rise bridge across
the Indian River at Wabasso, died Tuesday, Aug 30, at the Indian River
Memorial Hospital.
A man of many accomplishments, and a civic leader throughout the
state and local area, all of his adult life, Mr. Earman was chairman of
the Florida Inland Navigational District when the old wooden Wabasso
bridge was torn down and a new high rise bridge was constructed.
Mr. Earman told friends the signing of the papers concerning the
construction of the bridge was a high point of his public service.
Another high point, as far as the north Indian River County area is
concerned, came shortly after he was elected to the Navigational District
in 1965. His first official act was to set aside the spoil area known as
Pelican Island in perpetuity to the U.S. government. The action protected
Pelican Island as a wildlife refuge. The island has been used as a
nesting place by large numbers of pelicans throughout this area.
The Vero Beach resident wore many hats throughout his career. He
served as chief of the state's Intangible Tax Division, and was a
founder of the Indian River Citrus Bank, now the First Bankers of
Indian River County.
He founded the Vero Beach Ice and Storage Co. and the Blue Crystal
Bottled Water Co.
He also helped establish the Wildlife and Waterfowl District under
the U.S. Department of the Interior, in Palm Beach County, now one of
the largest wildlife refuges and water conservation areas in the country.
He was a citrus grower and farmer early in his career. He established
the first packing house for citrus, in Indian River County. It is now
operated as Packers of Indian River.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 3, at Trinity Episcopal
Church, Vero.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, of Vero Beach; two sons
Joseph H. Earman, of Vero Beach, and William A. Earman, of Champaign,
Ill.; a daughter, Georgia A. Russell, of Ashland, Ky.; eight grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may contribute to the pastor's discretionary fund of Trinity
Church, 2338 Granada Av., in Vero Beach. Cox-Gifford-Romani Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements.
